What's nice about these the bands producing these songs is how they strive so desperately to individualize themselves. On a commercial level, they do quite well in delivering catchy pop hooks. When it comes to having actual talent, a select few actually do possess attention-worthy integrity. But there are others who don't, and they disappear from the American consciousness after a brief flirtation with success. Such theories, however, are left up to the individual music fan, so let's put that aside for a moment to experience the decadent pop world of the Killers. The Las Vegas foursome introduce a perfectly tailored new wave-induced art rock sound on their debut, Hot Fuss. They wooed MTV audiences and modern rock followers with the success of "Somebody Told Me" during summer 2004. This chunky-riffed single loaded with androgynous mystery and a dalliance with new romantic energy captures the infectious delivery of the Killers as a band. Vocalist/keyboardist Brandon Flowers does his best Simon LeBon imitation; the sex appeal and the boyish charm are perfectly in place as the rest of the band accents his rich, red-hotness just so. "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" and "Mr. Brightside" are equally as foxy as the album's first single, affirming that a formula is indeed in motion. It's hard to deny the sparkle of Depeche Mode beats and the sensual allure of Duran Duran. After 25 years, those sounds still hold up; by 2004, however, it's an incredible task to pull this kind of thing off without selling yourself to the tastes of the masses. Interpol and the Walkmen have pulled it off; Franz Ferdinand and Hot Hot Heat have potential. The difference with the Killers is that the dynamic doesn't firmly hold together. The gospel/rock jaunt of "All These Things That I've Done" doesn't quit fit around the Cure-inspired synth reveries of "Everything Will Be Alright" and "Believe Me Natalie." "Midnight Show," as much as it plucks from Duran Duran's "Planet Earth" and "Is There Something I Should Know?," does show promise for the Killers. Hot Fuss came at the right time because the pop kids needed something to savor the summer with, and "Somebody Told Me" served that purpose. Now pull out your Duran Duran records and dance like no one is watching. Her background is not irrelevant here, as the album reflects her own, very personal -- and intentional or not, her generation's -- crisis of belonging as she recounts stories of navigating young adulthood in the City. A visceral work that shares the immediacy of classic punk and confessional singer/songwriter fare at once, Puberty 2 takes listeners behind closed doors with the kind of no-holds-barred lyrics that are likely to leave a lasting impression. The opener "Happy" is full of bite and irony as she describes a hook-up and his stealthy exit in a context of grooving rhythms, a catchy melody, and poppy saxophone solos. Through it all in the background -- though it's brought to the fore in the intro and outro -- is the relentless pounding of a drum. Understated guitar and synths mark the infectious "Fireworks," which has Mitski predict, almost deadpan, "One morning this sadness will fossilize/And I will forget how to cry." As the song builds momentum, many listeners will catch themselves bobbing heads in time despite its despondent lyrics. The fuzzier "Your Best American Girl" plays more like a power ballad as the singer, whose mother's side of the family is Japanese, laments the end of a relationship with an "All-American boy." The break-up is at least partly due to the predicted disapproval of his mother. A two-minute punk anthem for the nation's youth and beyond, "My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars" frets "I wanna see the whole world/I don't know how I'm gonna pay rent." Here her voice lets loose, shouting and gasping, in sharp contrast to the deliberate self-control of some of the other tracks. Fearless and affecting from beginning to end, Puberty 2, while certainly individualistic, has the potential for far-reaching relatability. ~ Marcy Donelson

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 06/17/2016

Personnel: Kurt Ballou (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Nate Newton, Jacob Bannon (vocals); Ben Koller (drums, percussion).
Audio Remasterer: Alan Douches.
Audio Remixer: Kurt Ballou.
Recording information: Godcity, Magpie,; Witch Doctor.
You Fail Me marks the first taste of large-scale commercial success for a band long lauded by many in the know as one of the most important underground acts on the metal-minded hardcore scene. Luckily, Converge changed little after signing to Epitaph, retaining its trademark mix of half-screamed/half-grunted vocals, brutal guitars, and stop-start rhythms. The production is exquisitely raw and immediate, providing the listener with an impression of sitting in the group's warehouse rehearsal space, ears near the speakers.
Despite its brief running time of around 35 minutes, the album manages to hit all the right emotional highs and lows. Its 11 songs are sequenced in alphabetical order -- a stunt befitting a Pixies concert or perhaps a Frank Black box set, not a proper album -- and many of these tunes are of an older vintage: the group began work on the opening "Burn the Witch" at the turn of the century, while the closing "True Love Waits" first appeared in concerts way back in 1995. These are the elements of a clearinghouse, but with Radiohead appearances are always deceiving. A Moon Shaped Pool doesn't play like an ill-considered collection of leftovers; it unfurls with understated ease, each silvery song shimmering into the next. The pulse rarely quickens and the arrangements seldom agitate, yet the album never quite feels monochromatic. Sly, dissonant strings grace some cuts, acoustic guitars provide a pastoral counterpoint to an electronic pulse, Thom Yorke's voice floats through the music, often functioning as nothing more than an element of a mix; what he's saying matters not as much as how he murmurs. Such subtle, shifting textures emphasize Radiohead's musicianship, a point underscored when this version of "True Love Waits" is compared to its 2001 incarnation. There, Yorke accompanied himself with a simple acoustic guitar and he seemed earnest and yearning, but here, supported by piano and strings, he sounds weary and weathered, a man who has lost his innocence. What he and Radiohead have gained, however, is some measure of maturity, and with this, their music has deepened. Certainly, sections of A Moon Shaped Pool contain an eerie, disconcerting glimmer, usually attained through power kept in reserve -- nothing stabs as hard as the sawing fanfare of "Burn the Witch," while the winding, intersecting guitars that conclude "Identikit" provide the noisiest element -- yet the album as a whole doesn't feel unsettling. Instead, there's a melancholic comfort to its ebb and flow, a gentle rocking motion that feels comforting; it's a tonic to the cloistered, scattered King of Limbs and even the sleek alienation of Kid A. Radiohead are recognizably the same band that made that pioneering piece of electronica-rock but they're older and wiser on A Moon Shaped Pool, deciding not to push at the borders of their sound but rather settle into the territory they've marked as their own. This may not result in a radical shift in sound but rather a welcome change in tone: for the first time Radiohead feel comfortable in their own skin.

Tracklist

A1        Burn The Witch
A2        Daydreaming
B1        Decks Dark
B2        Desert Island Disk
B3        Ful Stop
C1        Glass Eyes
C2        Identikit
C3        The Numbers
D1        Present Tense
D2 Tinker Tailor Soldier Sailor Rich Man Poor Man Beggar Man Thief
D3        True Love Waits

*Audio and/or tracklist may vary slightly from the vinyl version.

Label: ‎‎XL Recordings
Rel. Numero's collection borrows it's title from Abrahamian's long-running and acclaimed WHPK radio show, and it spins a tale that's cautionary, inspiring, and set to the sounds of the impossible-to-find tracks that made Bob Abrahamian's on-air playlist and animated the radio programs that were his life's work. Collected here are 12 artists featured on Sitting In The Park, in their own words and through the lens of our friend Bob. With a sudden and totally unexpected number two national hit in "Walk, Don't Run" and a burgeoning demand for live performances, the quartet went in and recorded the best 11 tracks they knew to get a long player together, all done in such a hurry that the members themselves couldn't stay around long enough to be photographed for the cover (those are stand-ins). The result is surprisingly sophisticated in its use of stereo (then still relatively unusual in rock & roll, stereo LPs only debuted three years earlier and were largely confined to classical recordings), dividing the sound of the band quite neatly on two sides, thus giving LP purchasers a treat that owners of the single "Walk, Don't Run" would miss -- not only the sound separation that was so prized by audiophiles of the era, but crisp presentation of each instrument, dividing the two guitars very neatly. Thus, the casual listener could play with the speaker settings and balances, and the serious fans could get in close on the actual playing. The material is a mix of originals and hits drawn from every category, including earlier rock & roll instrumentals ("Raunchy"), R&B "Night Train," and even film music ("My Own True Love [Tara's Theme]") -- one can just make out the familiar Max Steiner Gone with the Wind motif on the latter, and it is a fairly inventive approach to an old musical chestnut, rebuilding it from the ground up. The material all has a lean jauntiness, most unexpectedly "Night Train," which sounds closer in spirit to Chet Atkins than to Buddy Morrow or King Curtis. The originals were no filler, either, "The McCoy" being a hot piece of surf guitar showcasing all concerned. ~ Bruce Eder

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/the-ventures-walk-dont-run-4-bonus-tracks_lh0dF.jpg?v=1759086367
nina-simone-sings-duke-ellington
SINGS DUKE ELLINGTON
Nina Simone was on her way to becoming a major name by 1962, with her protest and civil rights songs granting her acclaim and recognition far beyond the jazz world. Their longest outing to date, the ten-track set would be less of a marathon were it not for the epic eight-minute closer "They Come Crawling Back," a doomy, thrashy, and relentlessly brutal bit of business that boasts the album's lone fade-out; it actually exhausts itself. The rest of You Will Never Be One of Us closely mirrors Nails' previous offerings, delivering forehead-melting blastbeats, whammy bar-induced audio grand mal seizures, and lyrics that target the sickly sweet spot between apoplectic and hopeless. In short, it's another vital and punishing set of high-caliber hardcore ragers that celebrate the worst that humanity has to offer. It's also the group's most polished -- if shiny razors are your thing -- effort to date, due in large part to some pithy production work from Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. Still, it's an unrelenting black mass of vengeance, with meatier bits like "Violence Is Forever," "Savage Intolerance," and the punitive title track boasting a boomy, pit-of-your-stomach throb that helps to balance out some of the shriller tones that accompany the intermittent air-raid siren noodling. It's lethal stuff, and too much of it would likely kill you, which is why, in looking ahead to future endeavors, they should probably steer clear of the 35-minute mark. Cut with his touring band of the mid-2000s -- an outfit featuring bassist Kenny Lee Lewis, drummer Gordy Knudtson, keyboardist Joseph Wooten, guitarist Jacob Petersen, and vocalist Sonny Charles -- The Joker Live in Concert does indeed contain all nine songs from The Joker, but the running order is shuffled so the tunes work as a concert experience: it opens with the steady-rolling blues of "Come on in My Kitchen" and builds to the closing sequence of "Your Cash Ain't Nothin' But Trash," "Sugar Babe," and "The Joker," the latter originally opening the album's second side but nevertheless an obvious choice for a closing selection. Some of the 1973 album's period production flair is missed -- those studio grace notes are part of the flair -- but by stripping the arrangements down to the blues basics, Miller reveals how sturdy and enduring the songs are while additionally showing that he was supported by a fine band in 2014. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Format: CD

Released: 06/17/2016

Personnel: Nick Scott (guitar); Christian Koo (piano); Luke Holland (drums).
On Treehouse (Sumerian), the genre-smashing fifth LP from I See Stars, electronic, metalcore, pop, and even hip-hop join forces to create one of the most interesting sounds of 2016. Despite being long admired by the metal underground, Pentagram never recorded for a major label, and never recorded a full-length release during their peak '70s period. But the good folks at Relapse assembled a fine compilation, First Daze Here: The Vintage Collection, in 2002, and four years later issued a follow-up double-disc set, First Daze Here Too: The Vintage Collection. All of the material on First Daze Here Too comes from the '70s -- the seven-track first disc focuses on demos, rehearsals, and a recording session circa 1974 and 1976, while the 15-track second disc is comprised strictly of rehearsal tapes from 1972 and 1974. Although nothing here scales the same heights as say, "Iron Man" or "Sweet Leaf," there are plenty of riff-heavy nuggets that will surely appeal to fans of retro metal, including "When the Screams Come" and "Much Too Young to Know." That said, several tracks come close to "bar band territory," especially "Teaser" and a cover of the Stones' "Under My Thumb." With only odds and ends left behind by the band, First Daze Here Too: The Vintage Collection is a solid follow-up purchase for bell-bottomed headbangers who bought the first set. ~ Greg Prato

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 06/17/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/pentagram-first-daze-here-too_KZTcZ.jpg?v=1741076583
bruce-hornsby-the-rehab-reunion
REHAB REUNION
Personnel: Bruce Hornsby (vocals, dulcimer); Gibb Droll (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Ross Holmes (mandolin, fiddle); John "J.T." Thomas (organ); Sonny Emory (drums, washboard).
Audio Mixers: Wayne Pooley; Bruce Hornsby.
Recording information: April Base Studios, Fall Creek, WI; Chicago Recording Company, Fall Creek, WI; Tossington Sound.
Photographer: Kathy Hornsby.
2016's Rehab Reunion is Bruce Hornsby's first studio album with his longtime backing back the Noisemakers since 2009's Levitate. Sadly, that violence only escalated -- and in the mid-'90s, things became downright tragic with the well-publicized East Coast/West Coast feud that involved the Notorious B.I.G., Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs, and Bad Boy Entertainment on one side and Tupac Shakur, Death Row Records, and the infamous Suge Knight on the other. Hip-hop has always had feuds -- LL Cool J versus Kool Moe Dee, the Juice Crew versus Boogie Down Productions -- but when Biggie and 2Pac were both killed in drive-by shootings, the East Coast/West Coast rivalry became more than a war of words; it became a war of actual bullets. Hip-hop's many feuds are the focus of the documentary Beef, and this soundtrack often captures the intense bitterness that has characterized some of them. The soundtrack opens on an extremely bitter note with "No Vaseline," Ice Cube's scathing 1991 attack on Eazy-E and others he knew from N.W.A -- and the CD maintains a harsh, angry tone with other previously released songs (including N.W.A's "Fuck tha Police") and new material by, among others, KRS, Jayo Felony, and Poverty (a seriously talented white MC from Portland, OR). Not all of the tunes are actually about feuds among rappers; "Fuck tha Police" is a commentary on police brutality. However, those feuds are a recurring theme, and KRS engages in a little feuding of his own when he gives St. Louis pop-rapper Nelly a serious tongue-lashing on "You Don't Really Want It." Of course, KRS has long had a sense of what is and isn't crossing the line; he understands that while verbal aggression is one thing, committing actual violence against fellow MCs is totally unacceptable. Sadly, he fears that some rappers don't understand that, which is one of the reasons why Beef desperately needed to be made. Not everything on this soundtrack is great; some of the tunes are excellent, while others are merely competent. But at its best, the Beef soundtrack sheds some light on a disheartening hip-hop crisis that has stubbornly refused to go away. ~ Alex Henderson

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

The Red Hot Chili Peppers' 11th studio album, 2016's The Getaway, is a sophisticated work of dark-hued maturity that finds the long-running California outfit expanding their sound into nuanced, '70s-style orchestral soul and funky psychedelia. The album follows the equally adventurous I'm with You (2011) and once again showcases guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who replaced John Frusciante in 2009. A major difference, however, between I'm with You and The Getaway was the band's choice to work with producer/instrumentalist Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse). This makes The Getaway the first album the Red Hot Chili Peppers have recorded without longtime collaborator Rick Rubin, who has helmed each of the band's albums since 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik. While the choice helps differentiate The Getaway on a spiritual level, sonically it feels as if the band and Klinghoffer have finally gelled as a complete creative unit. Maybe that's due to having I'm with You under their belt, or perhaps it's due to Kiedis having purportedly gone through a painful break-up. Either way, the result is a subtle yet significant advance from I'm with You that feels just that much more focused. Cuts like the disco-inflected title track and the '80s electro-infused "Go Robot" reveal the band's knack for coloring their sound in surprising ways. Others, like "We Turn Red" and "This Ticonderoga," are athletic funk-punk jams. Elsewhere, their chance-taking nature pays dividends, as on the Elton John collaboration "Sick Love." A laid-back groover featuring John on piano with lyrics by Bernie Taupin, the song is an album standout, bringing to mind '70s-era Isley Brothers. Similarly, tracks like the flowing "The Longest Wave" and the densely layered "Feasting on the Flowers," have a melodic, psychedelic quality that feels inspired by the Beatles' late-'60s period. However, it's the sprawling, hypnotic album closer, "Dreams of a Samurai," that seems to pull all of The Getaway's disparate themes together in a bold, anthemic, fever dream of a song. Beginning with a minor-key piano intro, the song evolves into a roiling cinematic epic with Kiedis' yearning baritone framed in Klinghoffer's sweltering layers of wet, echoey guitars, Flea's rounded, circular basslines, and drummer Chad Smith's frenetic rhythms. They even make room for a soaring choir in the background that adds to the song's often malevolent, dream-like atmosphere. At once transformative and self-critical, the song finds Kiedis in a philosophical mood, painting himself as a lonely "metamorphosis samurai" singing, "I've lost myself out on the range." While none of the songs on The Getaway play out as literal stories of Kiedis' relationship, there is an underlying sense of heartbreak at the core of many of his lyrics. On "Dark Necessities," he sings, "Spinning knot that is on my heart is like a bit of light in a touch of dark/You got sneak attack from the zodiac/But I see your fire spark." Ultimately, The Getaway is a nuanced album, rife with journeyman craft and poetry, that proves the Red Hot Chili Peppers still have plenty of their own creative fire. ~ Matt Collar

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Red-Hot-Chili-Peppers--The-Getaway-2-Lps_gJnyx.jpg?v=1740584383
mitski-puberty-3
Puberty 2
TracksCredits
- Disc 1 -
1 Happy
2 Dan the Dancer
3 Once More to See You
4 Fireworks
5 Your Best American Girl
- Disc 2 -
1 I Bet on Losing Dogs
2 My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars
3 Thursday Girl
4 A Loving Feeling
5 Crack Baby
6 A Burning Hill

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

SPECIAL BLENDS VOL. 1 & 2 is a Records & LPs from Mf Doom

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/mf-doom-special-blends-vol-1-2_EzC3q.jpg?v=1758844538
art-pepper-surf-ride-lp
SURF RIDE (LP)
Personnel: Art Pepper (alto saxophone), Jack Montrose (tenor saxophone), Russ Freeman, Hampton Hawes, Claude Williamson (piano), Bob Whitlock, Joe Mondragon, Monte Budwig (bass), Bobby White, Larry Bunker (drums).
Originally released on Savoy (MG 12089). Compared to the endless slabs of double-album dreck that came out around the same time from all sources, here Funkadelic brought life, soul, and much more to the party. With George Clinton credited only for arranging and producing, here the mad cast he brought together went all out. Bernie Worrell in particular now had a new importance, credited as co-arranger with Clinton as well as handling string and horn charts on a number of songs. His surging, never-stop keyboards, meanwhile, took control from the start, with his magnificent lead break on the opening "You Hit the Nail on the Head" making for one of the best performances ever on Hammond organ. Bootsy Collins (credited as William) is also somewhere in the crowd on bass and vocals, while old favorites like Eddie Hazel and Tiki Fulwood, among many others, can be found. Perhaps to fill in the time, a few numbers from the first Parliament album, Osmium, two years before cropped up, namely "Loose Booty" and the hilariously sleazy "I Call My Baby Pussycat," here performed with a noticeably slower, dirty groove. The straightforward social call to arms appears throughout, with one song title saying it all -- "If You Don't Like the Effects, Don't Produce the Cause." Other winners include the vicious title track, combining everything from mysterious, doom-laden voices and weeping wails to slow, sad music, and the concluding "Wake Up," while "Everybody Is Going to Make It This Time" is a lovely, gospel-informed ballad that heads for the skies and hearts. There are more mundane concerns as well, such as "There Was My Girl," a quirky weeper, and the weird if smoothly delivered "Miss Lucifer's Love," with more than one target in mind. ~ Ned Raggett

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/funkadelic-america-eats-its-young_b8WA9.jpg?v=1759258572
mumford-sons-johannesburg-extended-play-10-inch-vinyl
Johannesburg (Extended Play, 10-Inch Vinyl)
It'll come as no surprise that an EP called Johannesburg carries a considerable South African undercurrent to its rhythms and productions. Named for the studio in which they were recorded, Spinhead Sessions collects 1986 rehearsals for their music for Ken Friedman's dark, cross-country road movie Made in USA. They're markedly different from the finished score, which was released in 1994 by Rhino Records. The band embarked on this project after releasing the haunting EVOL, and while Made in USA nodded to that album, it often felt curtailed and slick, sending up budding indie rock clich?s with an irony the band used more artfully on its '90s albums. By contrast, Spinhead Sessions goes deeper into EVOL's sullen mix of chaos and dead calm: the lumbering beat and brittle guitar harmonics on "Theme with Noise" could be the mirror twin of "Tom Violence." However, Sonic Youth uses a more limited palette than they did on either EVOL or Made in USA to conjure the promise and menace of the open road on these dark, expansive tracks. On songs such as the nearly 17-minute-long opener "Ambient Guitar & Dreamy Theme," feedback, drones, and wind chimes evoke the faint but persistent smoke of Centralia, Pennsylvania, where a coal mine fire has burned for decades and the film's journey begins. The band allows these elements to float, sink, and collide at will throughout Spinhead Sessions: "High Mesa," for example, begins with a tumbling rhythm, then quickens into what could be the backdrop for a chase scene before coalescing into low-slung rock. Even shorter tracks such as the implosive "Scalping" and "Unknown Theme" and lighter cuts like "Wolf" and "Theme 1 [Take 4]" maintain this shadowy, searching quality, and take the experiments of this era to a logical extreme. As hypnotic as Spinhead Sessions is, its tracks may have been too attention-getting in their own right to be used as a film score. Nevertheless, it's something of a gold mine for fans of Sonic Youth's mid-'80s output, which was some of the most challenging and beautiful music of their career. ~ Heather Phares

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/sonic-youth-spinhead-sessions_gYiIK.jpg?v=1741307866
gojira-magma-digital-download-card
Magma (Digital Download Card)

This sixth album by the French extreme metallers is a bold step forward into new territory. Having already cemented their place as one of the best technical death metal bands in history, here they broaden their horizons considerably, experimenting with melody, groove, shorter songs, more straightforward structures, and actual singing. This shift from complexity toward accessibility has seen Magma draw comparisons with Metallica's black album, which Gojira have welcomed. Although they have toned down the complexity a bit, the music is still incredibly heavy, and there are still more ideas in this album than most bands manage in an entire career -- from the Middle Eastern soloing of "Silvera" through the brutal, syncopated drum tattoo that drives "The Cell" to the almost liturgical, monastic vocals on the title track and the incredibly harsh, shrieking, industrial guitar effect that shows up periodically. Opener "The Shooting Star" sets the stage for the rest of the album with a sludgy midtempo groove, multi-tracked vocals, a minor-key melody, clean singing, and a veritable wall of guitar. The title track is one of the most progressive on the record, harking back to the band's old-school days with at least five different sections, and is followed up immediately by the one-two punch of a couple of the album's heaviest tracks -- "Pray," blasting along with grinding, djent-inspired riffage, and "Only Pain," where Joe Duplantier roars into the void over a cyclical maelstrom of guitar. But there's almost a pop feel to some of the material here. Both the music and Duplantier's singing style have a '90s vibe, and the chorus on "Stranded" could almost have come off something by one of the sludgier grunge bands, like Alice in Chains or Tad (who were, incidentally, once described by a British music journalist as "the Metallica it's OK to like"). The album ends in stately near-silence with the acoustic instrumental outro "Liberation." The bulk of the lyrics are inspired by the untimely passing of the Duplantier brothers' mother, a subject that has obviously been the cause of much pain but is also handled with grace, sensitivity, and good taste. This album is not going to give Gojira any big pop radio hits, but it will certainly broaden their appeal outside of the death metal ghetto to more general fans of metal and hard rock. ~ John D. This music is friendly and engaging from beginning to end.

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

POLYDR SGL 1975-2015 is a Records & LPs from The Who

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar); Mick Ronson (guitar, bass, background vocals); Mike Garson (keyboards); Trevor Bolder (bass); Mick "Woody" Woodmansey (drums). Recorded live at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica, California on October 20, 1972. Only available in bootleg versions before this 2008 EMI release, LIVE SANTA MONICA '72 presents David Bowie in full glam-rock grandeur completely inhabiting his outlandish Ziggy Stardust persona as he leads his Spiders from Mars through a fierce set that draws heavily from HUNKY DORY and, not surprisingly, THE RISE & FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST. In addition to cherry-picking many of the finest tunes from Bowie's early era (most notably a thunderous extended version of "The Width of a Circle"), the set also finds the erstwhile Davy Jones covering Jacques Brel (a wistful take on "My Death" that nods to key Bowie influence Scott Walker) and the Velvet Underground (a faithful version of "Waiting for the Man"). Running constantly on all cylinders, the Godfather of Soul's infectious grooves and potent performances are elevated to a whole other level few others can dream of reaching. It's a Man's Man's Man's World captures one of those impassioned performances from the later stages of Brown's career, and finds him still in fine form. All of the classics are represented in this session, including an over the top version of the album's title track. While the performances are stellar and the quality of the record palatable, this is by no means an essential release except for die-hard Brown collectors and fans. Casual listeners should turn their attention to the groundbreaking Live at the Apollo series for a full-on orientation to the man and his magic bag of soul. ~ Rob Theakston

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/james-brown-its-a-mans-mans-mans-world_r3VEO.jpg?v=1759036352
thelonious-monk-in-france-the-complete-concert
In France - The Complete Concert

In France - The Complete Concert is a Records & LPs from Thelonious Monk

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/17/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/thelonious-monk-in-france-the-complete-concert_AJ6BG.jpg?v=1758762179
bruce-hornsby-the-rehab-reunion-lp
REHAB REUNION (LP)
2016's Rehab Reunion is Bruce Hornsby's first studio album with his longtime backing back the Noisemakers since 2009's Levitate.
