Gary Clark Jr.

With his acclaimed debut Blak and Blu, Gary Clark, Jr. emerged at the dawn of the 2010s as the great hope for modern electric blues. He spent the rest of the decade fulfilling that promise, both by continuing the blues-rock tradition and expanding it to encompass contemporary funk, rock, and hip-hop. Initially, Clark played his cards relatively close to the vest, emphasizing the blues heritage of his hometown in Austin, Texas (and earning the endorsement of local legend Jimmie Vaughan). But Clark quickly took risks other contemporary blues guitarists didn't, collaborating with R&B singer Alicia Keys and modern rockers Foo Fighters, while branching out to political protest on the charged 2019 album This Land and jumping from genre to genre on 2024's powerful and eclectic JPEG RAW.

Born and raised in Austin, Clark first picked up a guitar at the age of 12 and spent his teens playing whatever gig he could get in the Austin area. He eventually met Clifford Antone, promoter and owner of Antone's, the city's premier blues club, who began featuring Clark at his venue. An amazing live performer, Clark soon became one of the brightest players on Austin's blues and rock scene. He released an independent album, 2005's Tribute, followed by a pair of self-produced albums in 2008 for Hotwire Unlimited, 110 and Worry No More. An EP, Gary Clark, Jr., also appeared from Hotwire in 2010.

But Clark was far from just a one-trick-pony guitar gunslinger. He could also sing, write, and arrange. He wrote the original score for the film Full Count and appeared as an actor in John Sayles' 2007 film Honeydripper. In 2010, Clark was selected by Eric Clapton to perform at the Crossroads Guitar Festival, and a video release of the show featuring Clark led to a recording deal with Warner Bros. Clark was soon in the studio working on his major-label debut. An EP called Bright Lights was released in 2011 in advance of the album Blak and Blu, which appeared in the fall of 2012. A Top Ten hit, it earned him a Grammy Award in the Best Traditional R&B Performance category for "Please Come Home." Clark's next release was the impressive two-disc Live, recorded during an 18-month-long tour behind Blak and Blu; the album better represented his wild, impassioned, and often elegantly graceful live sets.

After more touring, including dates opening for the Rolling Stones and the Foo Fighters, Clark released his second major-label studio set, 2015's The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. The album debuted at number eight on the Billboard charts and Clark supported it with an extensive tour (documented on the 2017 album Live North America 2016). That same year, he notched his first chart entry with a cover of the Beatles' "Come Together," recorded for the Justice League film soundtrack.

In 2018, Clark joined the all-star guest lineup on Tom Morello's collaborative project The Atlas Underground, lending vocals and guitar to the track "Where It's at Ain't What It Is." His fifth studio album, This Land, followed in March 2019, reflecting the political landscape of the time through the perspective of a Black American living in Texas. It also picked up four Grammy nominations, including one for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

As the COVID-19 pandemic put a temporary halt to Clark's touring schedule, he stayed busy collaborating with other artists. He added guitar to hip-hop producer Statik Selektah's 2020 album The Balancing Act, contributed to John Legend's 2020 LP Bigger Love, sat in on Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews' 2022 set Lifted, popped up on live albums by Willie Nelson and the Rolling Stones, and recorded a version of the Ides of March's 1970 hit "Vehicle" for the soundtrack to the 2022 animated feature Minions: The Rise of Gru. During this period, Clark also wrote and demoed new songs, and in 2024 he delivered his fourth major-label studio project, JPEG RAW. On his major-label debut, 2012's Blak and Blu, Clark demonstrated he isn't interested in following the path of blues traditionalists, and while there's plenty of great guitar work on 2015's The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, this is by no means a conventional blues album. Rather, The Story of Sonny Boy Slim is a thoughtful and passionate amalgam of African-American music past and present, and the blues is one of many crucial ingredients in the formula along with R&B, soul, rock & roll, funk, gospel, and hip-hop (the cyclical drum and guitar patterns that dominate many tracks demonstrate in themselves that the aural dividing line between blues and hip-hop isn't as wide as some like to imagine). Clark's guitar work is outstanding throughout, but his style is more about expressive layers of sound than tasty licks, and this isn't a guitar album so much as an album that features a lot of guitar amidst a rich variety of ingredients, which may not please folks waiting for a new Stevie Ray Vaughan. And Clark has more on his mind than the accepted templates of electric blues; the raw, swaggering R&B throb of "Grinder" accompanies a meditation on poverty and materialism, the acoustic street-corner jam of "Church" tells the tale of a man torn by love and loyalty, "Hold On" marries taut soul figures to bitter, heartsick observations on the struggles of the African-American community ("Seems like new news is the old news from a different angle/Another mother on TV crying 'cause her boy didn't make it"), "Can't Sleep" evokes Chic as Clark sings of falling for the wrong woman, and the rough landscape of guitars and percussion on "Wings" complements a tale of struggle that might not out be out of place on There's a Riot Goin' On. And the most explicitly bluesy cut on the album, "Shake," is a raw slice of juke joint jump that evokes Hound Dog Taylor more than the polished showmen Clark was expected to follow onto the blues circuit. Blues may be at the root of nearly everything on The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, but it's not the sum total of Clark's musical world-view, and if he's abdicated the position of the future of the blues, this music declares that Clark is one artist who will see to it that the blues does indeed have a future, which is what makes him important and Sonny Boy Slim a serious leap forward from Blak and Blu. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/11/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/gary-clark-jr-the-story-of-sonny-boy-slim-digital-download-card-2-lps_50vhn.jpg?v=1740707002
gary-clark-jr-blak-and-blu-2-lps
Blak and Blu (2 Lp's)

Gary Clark, Jr. has been hailed by a number of critics as "the New Hendrix," which seems to be the fate of any guitarist who combines blues and rock styles at a considerable volume (particularly if they cover "Third Stone from the Sun"). While that's a blurb that may look good in Clark's press kit, it rather misses the point; Clark isn't a visionary, game-changing artist like Hendrix, but instead he's a canny singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist who has learned from the past and present, fusing them into a style that's distinctive and exciting if not necessarily revolutionary. Warner Bros. is also pitching Blak and Blu as Clark's "groundbreaking debut album," when in fact it's just his major-label debut, with four indie releases preceding it, making the confidence and ambition of this set a bit less remarkable. But if Gary Clark, Jr. isn't likely to change the way we look at rock & roll or rewrite the aesthetic of the electric guitar, he is one of the most interesting talents to come out of the contemporary blues scene in quite some time. On Blak and Blu, most of Clark's tunes are solidly rooted in the blues, but he's also folded in hearty servings of hard rock, funk, retro-soul, and even a dash of hip-hop, and the way he lets the flavors mix is a big part of what makes this album work so well. There's an undertow of Northern Soul on the dance-friendly opener "Ain't Messin' Round," "Travis County" is a no-frills rocker that recalls the Stones in fifth gear, "The Life" finds Clark moving back and forth between singing and rapping in a streetwise tale of drug addiction, "Numb" recalls the punk blues attack of the Black Keys and the White Stripes in its fuzzed-out blast, and the title cut samples both Gil Scott-Heron and Albert King as Clark melds conscious themes with blues backdrops. While the typical modern-day guitar hero goes out of his way to throw his dexterity in your face at every turn, here Clark shows off a tougher and more primal style, and though his chops are certainly good, he keep his solos concise and his attack muscular throughout. And if his songwriting is a bit uneven, he has an inarguable talent with both lyrics and melodies, and he's a good-to-great singer, sounding soulful and honest on every cut. Blak and Blu's production (by Rob Cavallo and Mike Elizondo in collaboration with Clark) is too polished and processed for its own good, but if this album isn't likely to change your life, it will make an hour of it a lot more interesting, and there's no arguing that Gary Clark, Jr. is a talent strong enough to match his record company's hype. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/04/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/gary-clark-jr-blak-and-blu-2-lps_pzqdD.jpg?v=1740706388
gary-clark-jr-jpeg-raw-dlx-180gm
| JPEG RAW (180 Gram 2 LP)

Gary Clark Jr.’s forthcoming album entitled JPEG RAW, his fourth studio release,
marks a grand step in his musical evolution….
