Jimmy Ruffin

The older brother of the Temptations' lead singer David Ruffin, Jimmy enjoyed several huge hits himself in the mid-'60s for Berry Gordy's Soul label. Ruffin first signed with another Motown subsidiary, the short-lived Miracle, in 1961, but it was his convincing vocal on "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" that made him a star in 1966. He encored with "I've Passed This Way Before" and "Gonna Give Her All the Love I've Got." In 1970 he briefly teamed with David (by then a solo artist) as the Ruffin Brothers and cut a duet remake of Ben E. King's "Stand by Me." He staged an impressive comeback in 1980 on RSO Records with a major pop hit, "Hold on to My Love," produced by Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees. A stint living in England during the 1980s resulted in collaborations with Heaven 17 and Paul Weller, the latter for a benefit cover single of "Soul Deep." ~ Bill Dahl

Producers includes: James Dean, William Witherspoon, Norman Whitfield, Smokey Robinson, Frank Wilson.
Compilation producer: Harry Weinger.
Recorded between 1966 and 1970. Things are far different for this volume, spotlighting Motown second-line act Jimmy Ruffin, who reached the pop charts several times during the late '60s but never had a solid CD compilation before this one. It certainly leads with the right track, his sole Top Ten entry, the beautiful Motown nugget "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted." And since Ruffin only recorded a few LPs for the label, there's nothing major missing from this set and much that's good: the R&B hits "Don't You Miss Me a Little Bit Baby" and "I've Passed This Way Before," his 1970 cover of "Stand by Me" with brother David as a duet, and one of the best non-hits in Motown history, "As Long as There Is L-O-V-E Love." It's only 11 tracks, but with few other Jimmy Ruffin collections even in print, this is the one to get. ~ John Bush

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 11/06/2001

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/jimmy-ruffin-best-of20th-century_RFgQx.jpg?v=1742346141
jimmy-ruffin-what-becomes-of-the-broken-hearted-7-single
Jimmy Ruffin | What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted (Pre-Owned 7" Single)

"What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" is a hit single recorded by Jimmy Ruffin and released on Motown Records' Soul label in the summer of 1966.
