The 2013 Columbia/Legacy double-disc is part of Legacy's ongoing Essential series and, certainly, fans will find places to nitpick, such as the absence of "Death May Be Your Santa Claus" or other parts of the tremendous Brain Capers, which is only represented by the wonderful "Sweet Angeline" or "Ballad of the Mott the Hoople (26th March 1972, Zurich)," which is weirdly M.I.A. But that's nitpicking, isn't it? Judged in its entirety, this 34-track retrospective tells the story of Mott's prime -- cutting off when lead singer/songwriter Ian Hunter flew the coop, but few would truly be upset by that -- and hits all the high points, beginning with their heavy, heavy instrumental version of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" and winding up with a live version of "American Pie" that wraps up the set. Along the way there are a couple non-LP cuts -- "Foxy Foxy," "(Do You Remember) The Saturday Gigs?," the B-sides "Rose" and "Lounge Lizard" -- live versions, deep cuts, and, of course, the canon: "Rock & Roll Queen," "Walkin' with a Mountain," "One of the Boys," "Sucker," "Ready for Love/After Lights," "Sweet Jane," "I Wish I Was Your Mother," "All the Way from Memphis," "Honaloochie Boogie," "Whizz Kid," "The Golden Age of Rock N Roll," "Roll Away the Stone,' and "Born Late '68." If you're looking for a concentrated blast of everything that made Mott the Hoople monumentally great, there's no bettering this set, which will re-confirm the notion that, on some days, Mott the Hoople is the greatest rock & roll band that ever existed. That's precisely what the 2013 compilation Essential Harry Nilsson provides: two discs that tell his story from beginning to end, hitting all the high points along the way. The first disc concentrates on his '60s work, chronicling the rise of Nilsson the maverick interpreter and songwriter; his original versions of "Cuddly Toy," "I Guess the Lord Must Be in New York City," and "One" are here, as are his breakthrough cover of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'" and several selections from the landmark Nilsson Sings Newman, plus such remarkable pieces of popcraft like "1941," "Good Old Desk," "Without Her," and "Me and My Arrow." The entire second disc is devoted to the '70s, beginning with the smash 1971 album Nilsson Schmilsson and its hits -- "Without You," "Coconut," "Jump in the Fire" -- plus the album-opener "Gotta Get Up." From there, hits, non-LP singles, and the occasional oddities pile up -- "You're Breakin' My Heart," "Spaceman," "Daybreak," his straight version of "As Time Goes By," "Kojak Columbo" -- tracing his majestic rise and being kind with his fall. Although this doesn't have every great song Nilsson made (a few absent favorites are "Driving Along," "The Lottery Song," "Take Fifty Four," "Jesus Christ You're Tall"), no other compilation has captured his peculiar genius as thoroughly as this, which does indeed make it something close to the Essential Harry Nilsson. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 04/30/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Harry-Nilsson-THE-ESSENTIAL-HARRY-NILSSON_YisIS.jpg?v=1759431954
blue-oyster-cult-imaginos
IMAGINOS
Blue Oyster Cult: Eric Bloom (vocals); Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (guitar, vocals); Albert Bouchard (guitar, percussion, vocals); Joe Bouchard (keyboards, vocals); Allen Lanier (keyboards).
Additional personnel: Jack Secret, Joey Cerisano, Jon Rogers (vocals); Joe Satriani, Robbie Krieger, Aldo Nova, Tommy Moringello, Jack Rigg, Marc Biedermann, Kevin Carlson (guitars); Kenny Aaronson (bass); Thommy Price (drums); Shocking U (background vocals).
Recorded at Alpha & Omega Studios, San Francisco, California.
All songs written by members of Blue Oyster Cult.
Personnel: Albert Bouchard (vocals, guitar, percussion); Donald Roeser (vocals, guitar); Joe Bouchard (vocals, keyboards); Eric Bloom, Jack Secret (vocals); Tommy Moringiello, Jack Rigg (guitar); Tom Zvoncheck, Allen Lanier (keyboards); Tommy Price (drums).
Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder.
Recording information: 1981-1988.
Blue ?yster Cult went out with a bang as a major-label recording act on their 14th and last new Columbia album, Imaginos. The idea for this concept album came as early as Secret Treaties, on which some of its music appeared, and the recording took place over a six-year period. (As a result, album credits give the erroneous impression that the original band had reformed.) The story line, which is easier to appreciate in the liner notes than on the record, concerns a mysterious, protean 19th century figure who has a talent for turning up at key moments in history and influencing them for the worse. This is perhaps B?C's most consistent album, certainly its most uncompromising (none of its usual nods to pop accessibility), and also the closest thing to a real heavy-metal statement from a band that never quite fit that description. Unfortunately, this ambitious work came out as B?C was dropping out of the frontline of the music business, so the album that comes closest to defining Blue ?yster Cult turned into its creative swan song. ~ William Ruhlmann

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 04/30/2013

Imaginational Anthem Vols. 1-5 is a Music CDs from Various Artists

Genre: Folk

Format: CD

Released: 04/30/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/various-artists-imaginational-anthem-vols-1-5_G9MLI.jpg?v=1759398827
rittz-life-and-times-ofex
LIFE AND TIMES OF(EX
Recording information: Chapman Recording, Lenexa, KS; Ecko Studios, New York, NY; Laneway Studios, Pomona, CA; Mike's House, Hollywood, CA; Slumerican Studios, Nashville, TN; Tree Sound Studios Inc.
Photographer: Chad Hess.
Looking like a bouncer at a backwoods biker bar but flowing fast like he was Twista's younger brother, Atlanta rapper Rittz brings some Southern slang to the Strange Music roster, kicking the relationship off with The Life and Times of Jonny Valiant. Her return to recording is, at least on surface level, a curious one. Olson's desire to cut a duet record has been germinating for decades, but the time was never right until now. She rounded up a host of friends, bandmates, and some of her favorite singers for Have Harmony, Will Travel. Though there isn't a weak cut in bunch, there are some soaring highlights. Opener "You Can Come Cryin' to Me" with Juice Newton (and killer fuzzy lap steel from Cindy Cashdollar) is a case in point. Newton's high alto is still rich and full in the harmony and Olson gets right under the grain of the lyric. The pair also delivers a fine rendition of James Intveld's "Stringin' Me On." Olson and Peter Case team on Del Shannon's "Keep Searchin' (We'll Follow the Sun)." The crackling energy and dramatic longing in the songwriter's lyric are beautifully delivered, and Case's lead guitar work stings, to boot. Gene Clark's "She Don't Care About Time" is a song close to Olson's heart -- she was the late songwriter's duet and recording partner. This reading with Richie Furay up front, fueled Richard Podolor's gorgeous mandolin and former Byrd John York's electric 12-string (which reprises Roger McGuinn's "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring" solo in the break), is near awe-inspiring. Olson understands the truth in a song no matter how obscure. She and Gary Myrick deliver Chris Jagger's moving "Still Waters" with passion and swagger. She and York prove excellent singing partners on both Paul Kennerley's tender, broken love song "The First in Line" and P.F. Sloan's pop/rock anthem "Upon a Painted Ocean." Case makes a return appearance in a slippery, breezy reading of Moby Grape's "8:05." Set closer "Til the Rivers All Run Dry" is a Pozo-Seco Singers nugget (written by Don Williams) delivered beautifully by Rob Waller up front with Olson bringing the harmony. It ends the set by seamlessly melding folk, rock, and country. Have Harmony, Will Travel is a welcome return for Olson, but that's not all. With its direct, kinetic production, compelling song choices, and inspired performances, it is a blueprint for future duet recordings. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Rock

Format: CD

Released: 04/30/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/carla-olson-have-harmony-will-travel_X4n3g.jpg?v=1759132412
ll-cool-j-authentic
AUTHENTIC
Personnel: Z-Trip (scratches).
Liner Note Author: LL Cool J.
Recording information: Fenix Studios, NY; Henson Studios; Opra Music Studios; Westlake Recording Studios.
Photographers: Leann Mueller; Janette Beckman.
When LL Cool J dubs his 2013 effort Authentic, the veteran rapper is referring to an album that's authentically LL Cool J circa 2013, and not one that's authentically hip-hop. That's important to remember as the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink effort overflows with guests from every genre, like Public Enemy's Chuck D, blink-182's Travis Barker, Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, and electro-rocker Z-Trip. That busy jumble of names is not only on the same album, but on the same track, as in "Whaddup," a pop-protest number that's admirable enough, and one that sounds more natural than "Accidental Racist," LL's much-maligned duet with Brad Paisley. Authentic gets its own Paisley team-up with "Live for You," a glossed-up, jukebox country redo of LL's "I Need Love," although when it comes to updates to Cool J's classics, the "Mama Said Knock You Out" return "We're the Greatest" is a better choice, with Eddie Van Halen wailing away as the rapper does a Mike Tyson impression, intentional or not. This variety hour on wax comes alive when characters like Bootsy Collins (making the party number "Bartender Please" sound Deee-Lite-ful), Snoop Dogg (on the club worthy "We Come to Party"), and Charlie Wilson (swaggerfest "New Love" wins just for the line "honk your horn if she's walking by right now") show up, but even so, the album doubles down on some of its best ideas, and Eddie, Snoop, Travis, and Uncle Charlie all return for lesser numbers. LL sounds rusty and a bit under-rehearsed as he belts out his iffy punch lines and motivational anthems, but he pours his heart into the pop numbers and sounds at home during the nostalgic throwbacks. Don't call it a comeback of any sort, but good intentions abound and in a primetime television star manner, the album's title remains true. ~ David Jeffries

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 04/30/2013

Legends Never Die [Explicit Content] is a Music CDs from R.A. the Rugged Man

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 04/30/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/ra-the-rugged-man-legends-never-die-explicit-content_3XLYj.jpg?v=1758945913
olof-arnalds-sudden-elevation
Sudden Elevation
Icelandic singer/songwriter Ol?f Arnalds' third studio album, the dreamy, delicate, and oddly regal-sounding Sudden Elevation, is also her first outing to be delivered entirely in English, revealing an artist who, like everybody else in the world, just wants to be loved. With a voice that falls somewhere between the fairy princess croon of Joanna Newsom and the breathy intimacy of Vashti Bunyan, it can be difficult at times to separate the melodies from the vocal affectations, but like her fellow countrywoman Bjork Gudmundsd?ttir, it only takes a song or two before the two begin to get along famously. Musically, Arnalds presents a vision of folk music that is almost Elizabethan, suggesting a world of romance, intrigue, and pastoral, summery castle grounds, albeit ones where J?nsi is the court jester and the court composer is Sufjan Stevens instead of Thomas Tallis. That notion is best exemplified by two of the album's strongest cuts, the intoxicating opener "German Fields" and its equally beguiling mid-set partner in crime "A Little Grim," both of which utilize the singer/songwriter's myriad quirks in extremely naturalistic ways. Sometimes, as is the case on the lovely yet slight "Bright and Still," the simplistic lyrics transcend naivet? and venture dangerously close to obtuse, but for the most part, Arnalds shows a pretty decent command of the language, which would probably explain songs like "Treat Her Kindly," "Numbers and Names," and the sparse title track, all of which suggest a steady diet of Joni Mitchell albums. ~ James Christopher Monger

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 04/30/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/olof-arnalds-sudden-elevation_c6GeN.jpg?v=1741085838
chk-chk-chk-thriller-vinyl
!!!
