Equally as detailed and as entertaining as The ArchAndroid, The Electric Lady likewise is a product of overactive imaginations and detailed concept engineering, and it also plays out like a sci-fi opera-slash-variety program with style and era-hopping galore. Suite four is the album's busier and more ostentatious half, more star-studded and less focused, highlighted by the bopping "Dance Apocalyptic" and the strutting Badu duet "Q.U.E.E.N." Suite five is considerably stronger with a handful of firmly R&B-rooted gems. The inspiration for its overture is noted in the liners as "Stevie Wonder listening to Os Mutantes on vinyl (circa 1973)," but shades of Stevie's '70s work are heard later in more obvious ways. "Ghetto Woman" is impeccably layered soul-funk, fluid and robust at once, with chunky percussion and synthesizer lines bounding about as Mon?e delivers a performance as proud and as powerful as Stevie's "Black Man." It contains an autobiographical 30-second verse that is probably swift and dense enough to make early supporter Big Boi beam with pride. The enraptured liquid glide of "Dorothy Dandridge Eyes," featuring Spalding, recalls "I Can't Help It," co-written by Stevie for Michael Jackson's Off the Wall. Earlier, on "It's Code," Mon?e channels the yearning Jackson 5-era MJ. "Can't Live Without Your Love," presumably a paean to human love interest Anthony Greendown has Mon?e -- or Cindi Mayweather, aka Electric Lady Number One -- yearning like never before. The album is sure to astound Mon?e's sci-fi/theater-geek following. Its second half cannot be denied by those who simply value creative R&B that owes to the past and sounds fresh. Anyone can appreciate the phenomenal interludes, which are close to 3 Feet High and Rising level. Turn Blue, the 2014 successor to their down-and-dirty international blockbuster El Camino, is one of those trips, a churning psychedelic excursion that slowly pulses in any color you like. Those colors spread out slow and low as Turn Blue gets underway via "Weight of Love," sounding not at all unlike Pink Floyd's "Breathe in the Air," a deliberate comparison the Keys return to often throughout the album, letting it decorate fleeting moments and infuse full songs ("Bullet in the Brain," the first single pulled from the LP, hits many of the same notes). Floyd looked to space but, like the Ohio natives that they are, the Black Keys' concerns are earthbound. Dan Auerbach primarily sings songs about love lost and won, sprinkling in a little bit of lust along the way, and he and Patrick Carney certainly share a love of soul and groove, something that's rarely heard in music as trippy as this. Time and time again throughout Turn Blue, the Black Keys and Danger Mouse turn toward those rhythms without abandoning the psychedelic swirl that gives the album its distinctive flavor. Unlike 2008's Attack & Release -- the last time the Black Keys decided to get out, way out (and not coincidentally their first collaboration with Danger Mouse) -- this has momentum, a drive provided by those heavy rhythms (they escalate so much, "10 Lovers" flirts with glitter-ball disco) and sheets of outsized fuzz guitars that cut through the haze. Songs stretch out longer here than they have on any previous Black Keys LP, but this doesn't feel indulgent due to the precision of the production; things may seem to drift but every bit of fuzz and echo is in its right place. Initially, this immaculately shaded production draws attention to itself but, in time, Turn Blue reveals that underneath its surface flash it's a quietly adventurous and substantive record. The Black Keys retain their fascination with southern soul of the late '60s -- the title track is coolly insinuating, "Fever" stomps and shakes -- but where El Camino pushed these retro-fantasies to the center, they're merely the bones of this record, the solid structure upon which the band and Danger Mouse choose to expand. Although the closing "Gotta Get Away"-- its title borrowed from both the Rolling Stones and the Impressions but the song sounds like neither group -- illustrates how good the duo is when they keep things grounded in the garage, the rest of Turn Blue impresses because it does what all great bands should do: it captures a band stretching while always sounding like themselves. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 05/13/2014

WORLDS FOREMOST BLUES SINGER is a Records & LPs from Memphis Slim

Genre: Blues

Format: Vinyl

Released: 05/13/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/memphis-slim-worlds-foremost-blues-singer_3A5NI.jpg?v=1759353390
memphis-slim-travelling-with-the-blues-1
Travelling with the Blues

Travelling with the Blues is a Records & LPs from Memphis Slim

Genre: Blues

Format: Vinyl

Released: 05/13/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/memphis-slim-travelling-with-the-blues_nAT2F.jpg?v=1759208637
kiss-asylum-remastered-180-gram-vinyl
Asylum (Remastered, 180 Gram Vinyl)
TracksCredits
1 Love's a Deadly Weapon
2 King of the Mountain
3 Tears Are Falling
4 Any Way You Slice It
5 Secretly Cruel
6 Who Wants to Be Lonely
7 Radar for Love
8 Trial By Fire
9 I'm Alive
10 Uh! These topics get revisited on MTV UNPLUGGED, with the added bonus of prodigal sons Ace Frehley and Peter Criss returning to the fold after almost 15 years in post-Kiss exile.
The song selection on UNPLUGGED goes well beyond the perfuctory greatest-hits album made with acoustic guitars. Although the bulk of Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons' tune choices are from classic '70s albums like DRESSED TO KILL ("Rock Bottom"), DESTROYER ("Do You Love Me") and LOVE GUN ("Plaster Caster"), more obscure albums like CREATURES OF THE NIGHT ("I Still Love You") and MUSIC FROM THE ELDER ("A World Without Heroes," co-written by Lou Reed) are also touched upon.
As enthusiastic as the crowd was during this performance, their ardor overflows when Frehley and Criss appear three-quarters of the way through. These songs and their production values, though immediately reconizable, are more varied and textured than those of his debut--there's no pedal steel here for one thing. The Waylon Jennings-esque quality in Simpson's singing voice remains, but that's built in. His songwriting and confidence have grown exponentially. The set is introduced by his 82-year-old coal-mining grandfather Dood Fraley on opener and first single "Turtles All the Way Down." The track features Cobb's nylon-string guitar, the wafting tapes of a Mellotron, electric bass, acoustic and electric guitars, and sharp drums framing Simpson's lyrics that refer to Jesus, the Old Testament, Buddha, mythology, cosmology, drugs, and physics, before concluding that "love is the only thing that saved my life," making it a glorious cosmic cowboy song. On the rocking "Life of Sin," Simpson's acoustic guitar meets Laur Joamets' razor-sharp Telecaster leads in a cut-time shuffle that explodes in a country boogie. "Voices" addresses the collective and troubled history about coal-mining with wisdom--all inside a spacious yet lean three-minute country song. There are two covers here: One is a killer reading of Charlie Moore's and Bill Napier's trucker anthem "Long White Line" that careens and chugs with Joamets' razor-wire Telecaster and Simpson's flatpicking. The other is "The Promise." Originally a hit for the British pop band When in Rome in 1989, Simpson utterly transforms it into a progressive honky tonk love song and makes it his own. "A Little Light" is rockabilly-country-gospel with wrangling guitars, handclaps, ragged-but-right vocal harmonies, and plenty of spiritual swagger. "Just Let Go" is Buddhist gospel, with gorgeous harmonies, spiralling mellotron, slide guitars, poetic lyrics, and organ--it's one of the set's finest moments. It introduces the acid-drenched psychedelic country that is "It Ain't All Flowers." Simpson's prescient, philosophical lyrics are framed inside phased, wah-wah'ed, and reverbed guitars, crunchy snares, haunting mellotron, spacy slide lines, and instrumental backmasking that wind into the stratosphere. His strident, passionate vocal is so tough, soulful and spiny, it bleeds through genre definitions as it rocks, rolls, and wails. Metamodern Sounds in Country Music is wildly adventurous; it extends the musical promise outlaw music made to listeners over 40 years ago. Simpson is too honest, restless and dedicated to country music's illustrious legacy to simply frame it as a musical museum piece. As an artist of uncommon ability, he has learned from its hallowed lineage and storied past that in order for it to evolve, it cannot be reined in; it must be free to roam in order to create its future. His visionary work on this album opens the gate wide on that frontier. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 05/13/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/sturgill-simpson-metamodern-sounds-in-country-music_pNWNH.jpg?v=1741081179
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/products/dazed-confused-various-dazed-confused-various_hrPgC.jpg?v=1737929500
roy-haynes-phineas-we-three
WE THREE
Full performer name: Roy Haynes/Phineas Newborn/Paul Chambers.
Personnel: Roy Haynes (drums); Phineas Newborn (piano); Paul Chambers (bass).

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on November 14, 1958. Newborn was all about amazing and dazzling piano runs that on some dates created simply too much flash and clutter to allow pieces to flow and breathe properly, but Haynes has always been about grace and flow throughout his career (if a drummer's style can said to be elegant, Haynes fits the bill), and here he rubs off on Newborn, who exercises just enough restraint to keep him in the proper orbit, resulting in a fine album. Highlights include the easy, pure swing of the opener, a version of Ray Bryant's "Reflection," a wonderful and bluesy rendition of Avery Parrish's "After Hours" (which finds Newborn in perfect balance between explosive ornamentation and smooth functionality), and a jaunty, fun spin through Newborn's own "Sugar Ray," a tribute to boxer Sugar Ray Robinson. These songs were demos, preparations for the smash they knew they'd doubtlessly make. When it finally came time to record that debut, the four post-graduate friends entered expensive studios during off hours. Instead of finding their sound, though, they only found frustration. They went, then, with the demos, relatively primitive but especially intimate recordings they made wherever they lived and whenever they wanted. Gira likes to work on a large musical canvas, and he gives himself all the room he needs on To Be Kind -- "Bring the Sun/Toussaint L'Ouverture" alone is the length of an ordinary album at a shade over 34 minutes. Gira's vision is a bit less dark in the 21st century than it was during the Swans' first run in the '80s and '90s, with fewer lyrical images of rage and torment, but he's no less intense as he barks and howls his lyrics of life in a fallen world, and his music is every bit as physically powerful and challenging. As is the Swans' custom, the pieces on To Be Kind are built around repetitive rhythm patterns, with dynamics taking them from an ominous whisper to an unholy roar and back again, and the sheer physical impact of this music (and the stamina that must have been required to perform it) is remarkable, especially on the four cuts besides "Bring the Sun" that crack the ten-minute mark. Gira's music is minimalist at its core, but it's never simple or without imagination, and the waves of furious noise, found audio, and percussive hail are orchestrated with the exacting vision of a man who takes that vision very seriously. Gira's accompanists on To Be Kind include longtime guitarists Norman Westberg and Christoph Hahn, as well as bassist Christopher Pravdica and percussionists Phil Puleo, Thor Harris, and Bill Rieflin, and when they come together they sound like some sort of orchestra, huge, passionate, and crammed with sonic detail. And the closing numbers on each disc -- "Some Things We Do" and "To Be Kind" -- try to offer a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, as some vague signs of warmth and caring bubble up from the bottom of the black sea. The world of the Swans is a place where joy doesn't visit very often, but it's not as monochromatic as one might imagine, and the craft and vision behind this music is often stunning; Michael Gira is a man unafraid to follow his muse wherever it may take him, and To Be Kind is another example of his singular vision writ large without compromise. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 05/13/2014

The eponymous debut album from the Durham, North Carolina duo of Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn, the former a soulful crooner and songwriter best known as a member of Appalachian indie folk trio Mountain Man and the latter a talented electronic producer and bass player for country-psych rockers Megafaun, couldn't sound any further from the duo's flagship projects. Emitting a heady and evocative blend of breezy, late-night laptop-pop and glitchy metropolitan folk, Sylvan Esso's sophisticated confections fall somewhere between the fractured tabletop buzz of Tune-Yards and the breezy indie pop cinematics of Feist. Standout cuts like "Hey Mami," "H.S.K.T.," and "Coffee" are a tad dark, a bit sexy, and undeniably hypnotic, but they're also accessible (and surprisingly danceable), due in large part to the duo's Southern locale and Meath's laid-back delivery and penchant for penning coy and colorful lyrics. Elsewhere, the seductive "Dreamy Bruises" prowls about on a sleek, arpeggiated Grimes-approved groove, the sparse, gospel-like closer "Come Down" skillfully pairs Mountain Man austerity with ambient pop, and the appropriately named "Wolf" builds to a howling chorus on the strength of a fat synth line, a spare acoustic guitar, and a flurry of ghostly electronic pings, but it's the aforementioned "Coffee" that provides the perfect summation of the duo's strengths. The underground New York City group has had a revolving lineup through the years and on this set, listeners find former D Generation guitarist Rick Bacchus, bassist Sal Villaneuva (Demonspeed), and drummer Eric Arce (Skarhead) joining forces with original Murphy's Law frontman Jimmy G and producer Daniel Rey (Ramones, Misfits, and White Zombie). The result of this 2001 collaboration is 15 tracks of blistering, rowdy, and fast club punk, something that diehard fans should truly savor. The Party's Over -- which refers to the Mayor Rudolph Guiliani's intense "clean up" of the Big Apple -- is also wisely flavored with just enough pop and contemporary appeal to get airplay on modern rock and metal stations, as well as specialty radio shows. Several musical departures on this predominately speedy punk set do add extra flavor to an already colorful disc. "Walking Alone" incorporates a bit of a reggae vibe, while a sexy and steamy saxophone line accents "Skinhead Girl," a song that takes the tempo down a notch to a swaggering groove (but true to punk form, the song ends with a rousing round of frenetic choruses). "C-Low," with its penetrating guitar licks, offers up the most contemporary of the bunch and is comparable to fare by such modern rock acts as 3 Doors Down. Hands down, however, "Woke Up Tied Up" is the raunchiest and most entertaining song of the set.

Tracklist

A1 Turtles All The Way Down
A2        Life Of Sin
A3        Living The Dream
A4        Voices
A5        Long White Line
B1        The Promise
B2        A Little Light
B3        Just Let Go
B4        It Ain't All Flowers
B5        Panbowl (Bonus Track)

*Audio and/or tracklist may vary slightly from the vinyl version.

Label: HIGH TOP MOUNTAIN
Rel.
