The soundtrack's strength was the way it was so firmly rooted in place -- where future soundtrack extravaganzas simply contrived to gather as many big-name acts as possible, Singles focused specifically on Seattle-area music (quite logically, given the film's plot and setting), which gave the album the feel of a cohesive document. It didn't hurt that nearly all the bands involved contributed high-quality material -- although Nirvana is absent, scene stalwarts Soundgarden, their lead singer Chris Cornell (the haunting acoustic ballad \"Seasons\"), Alice in Chains (\"Would?,\" which showed up on their subsequent album, Dirt), Mudhoney, Pearl Jam (two tracks), and Screaming Trees all weigh in with strong new cuts, as well as stylistic compatriots Smashing Pumpkins (Chicago) and Minneapolis alt-rock god Paul Westerberg (his first two charmingly playful solo songs). The vaults are mined for chestnuts by Mother Love Bone (the epic \"Chloe Dancer\/Crown of Thorns,\" perhaps their strongest moment) and Seattle native Jimi Hendrix (the shimmering \"May This Be Love,\" which fits the mood of the album perfectly), and Seattle sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, leaders of Heart, appear as the Lovemongers on a stellar acoustic cover of Led Zeppelin's \"The Battle of Evermore.\" Despite Mudhoney's gripe that the whole early-'90s Seattle scene was \"Overblown,\" Singles illustrates through its marvelous consistency the richness and wealth of the city's musical talent, as well as the alternative scene in general; meanwhile, the Lovemongers and Hendrix cuts demonstrate the city's past musical heritage, and along with the Westerberg numbers, provide a handy template of several major (albeit more mainstream) grunge-scene influences -- Hendrix's guitar-heavy psychedelia, Led Zeppelin's epic hard rock, the Replacements' post-hardcore power pop -- that sit very well next to their followers. Although lead singer Jacoby Shaddix once seemed slightly embarrassed by his early-career rap stylings, since at least 2012's The Connection he's appeared more amenable to including hip-hop influences in Papa Roach's material. Goths is an album less about the trappings of the goth culture or even the music (though both certainly play a part in the story) than about folks making sense of their role in a subculture (and the larger world, too), and the album lives and dies on John Darnielle's skills as a storyteller. Thankfully, the songwriter and novelist is in superb form here, making his characters human and recognizable, and defining their lives with genuine compassion and wit, even when they're playing gigs for cocaine or trying to remember when the Batcave closed. And musically, Goths sounds fresh and buoyant; the performances have been stripped of guitars, with Darnielle's electric piano and Matt Douglas' woodwind arrangements carrying the weight of the melodies, and in a perverse way the fact the music sounds so decisively un-goth serves the songs better than if Darnielle and company had tried to mimic the Sisters of Mercy or Gene Loves Jezebel (both of whom play key roles in different songs). Just as 2015's Beat the Champ was an album about professional wrestling that you didn't have to care about wrestling to enjoy, Goths is an album about the upsides and downsides of purposefully walking out of step with the world (and \"Check me out -- I can't blend in\/Check me out -- I'm young and ravishing\" in \"Wear Black\" sums up the joys of being a misfit as well as anyone could ask) that doesn't require a familiarity with goth's past or present, and it's smart, fascinating, and tremendously satisfying. What hasn't changed is Giannascoli's genre-sampling approach, distinctively loose and intimate sound, and melodic inclinations. The album opens with the sullen \"Poison Root,\" which builds an acoustic clatter with guitar, banjo, piano, violin, and barking dogs while Giannascoli repeatedly mutters \"Now I know everything.\" That sets up \"Proud,\" a jaunty alt-country foot-tapper that's loaded with doublespeak like \"I'm so proud of you\/And everything that you do...I wanna be a fake like you\/Walk around with rocks in my shoes.\" Later, \"Sportstar\" uses distorted vocals to portray a fan with an unhealthy obsession (\"Let me wear your jersey\/If you want to hurt me, hurt me\"). Giannascoli has said that he wanted to populate the record with \"characters that don't know how crazy they are,\" and that instability is conspicuous early on. Stylistically, he takes on country again later with \"Bobby,\" a duet with fiddle, guitars, and banjo. In contrast, \"Brick\" is a grungy punk tune, and \"Witch\" is a more keyboard-based psychedelic entry with mathy rhythms. There are a couple of instrumentals, too, including the experimental, dissonant \"Horse.\" He's far from catering to the mainstream here, but through it all, the wistful chords and progressions that are such a trademark of his sound act as a sonic through-line. Also uniting the album are immediate, conversational vocals and, similarly, an impression that accompaniment is gathered in a circle playing along by ear. It all contributes to a recognizable sound that, despite having more players involved, sounds like (Sandy) Alex G in the way that one of his primary influences, Elliott Smith, always sounded like himself.
