It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of \"Smoke on the Water\" immediately elevates the album to essential status. The song became a long-running radio staple, and boasts one of the most instantly recognizable guitar riffs in rock history.\nYet the rest of the album holds up impressively, from the adrenaline-soaked opener \"Highway Star,\" in which organist Jon Lord and guitarist Richie Blackmore trade off dazzling solos, to the churning \"Space Truckin',\" another riff-driven rocker. Where that icy 2000 effort had the bracing chill of the new, The King of Limbs is familiar -- not commonplace, but carrying a certain inevitability as its eight songs slowly unspool. While KID A and AMNESIAC had been outre, boundary-pushing attempts to expand the pop-rock palette even beyond the ambitious OK COMPUTER, HAIL TO THE THIEF incorporates the avant-garde techniques developed in that journey, applying them to more formal song structures. In this way, we get the best of both worlds on what just might be Radiohead's best album yet.\r\nThough this isn't a return to the straight-ahead pop structures of THE BENDS, the guitar does make a welcome return here. There are plenty of glitchy electronics and atmospheric keyboards, etc., but they're integrated with traditional \"rock\" instrumentation\" in a completely organic way. Though they remain art-rockers to the end, with Thom Yorke expressing carefully wrought angst both personal and political, Radiohead injects some blood into things as well. Titled 2, this second Mudcrutch LP isn't quite a straight sequel. Any of the loose ends left hanging from 2008 have been tied: 2 is streamlined and tight, the cover songs excised in favor of brand-new compositions from every member of Mudcrutch. Just because all five musicians contribute at least one song, that doesn't necessarily make Mudcrutch a democracy. Petty remains the quintet's undisputed leader, writing seven of the 11 songs and setting the tone for 2, emphasizing a thick, swampy guitar grind that nevertheless finds space for the country breeze of Tom Leadon's \"The Other Side of the Mountain,\" Randall Marsh's AM '70s throwback \"Beautiful World,\" Benmont Tench's retro-boogie \"Welcome to Hell,\" and Mike Campbell's garage raver \"Victim of Circumstance.\" All of these provide grace notes to a strong set of Petty originals that range from heartbroken ballads (\"Beautiful Blue\") and psychedelic stompers (\"Hope\") to Byrdsian jangle (\"Save Your Water\") and a revival of \"Trailer,\" a Southern Accents outtake given a nice sludgy rendition illustrating that the main charm of Mudcrutch is their casualness.
