It is also quite alluring. Mayer may be reverting to the sound of Continuum, alternating between R\u0026amp;B workouts and soul-baring ballads, but forward movement is the unifying sentiment here. The nimble funk opener, \"Moving on and Getting Over,\" makes that plain, as does the plaintive \"Changing,\" which summarizes his plight simply: \"I may be old and I may be young\/But I am not done changing.\" Some of Mayer's change can be charted in how he hangs onto his romantic past, burying some of his heartache on the deceptively exuberant opener, \"Still Feel Like Your Man,\" and offering a bittersweet denouement in the admission \"You're Gonna Live Forever in Me.\" Mirroring his emotional maturity is a sharpening of his songcraft. While he's always shown a knack for slow-burning soul, the progression and arrangement of the smoldering \"Rosie\" feel as sophisticated as the lithe grace of \"Emoji of a Wave,\" while \"Roll It on Home,\" an easy-rolling country-rocker that tips its hat to the Dead, shows how he absorbed the lessons of his Laurel Canyon detour of Born and Raised and Paradise Valley. Those two records, along with such earlier workouts as Try! After the 1979 release of the precocious but misunderstood double album TUSK, which fell disappointingly below the mind-blowing sales of 1977's multi-platinum RUMOURS, the band decided to take a safer route for their next release. In sunny contrast to the melancholy introspection of TUSK, 1982's MIRAGE returned the band to bright melodies and hit single material. The advent of MTV led the band to release two artistic videos in conjunction with the record, the Magritte-inspired desert fantasy of \"Hold Me,\" Christine McVie's lush, pleading love song, and the handsome, Depression-era daydream of \"Gypsy,\" one of Nicks' prettiest signature tunes. The jangling bonhomie of MIRAGE even affects Buckingham's darker songs; though lyrically heartbroken, on \"Book of Love\" Buckingham sounds almost cheerful. His husky \"Empire State\" is a love-giddy ode to New York. Nicks' \"Straight Back\" feels spiritually tied to the duskier tone of her 1981 solo album BELLADONNA, and the mistress of the moon even tries her hand at country with the twanging lope of \"That's Alright.\" Christine McVie's shimmering ballad \"Only Over You\" is one of MIRAGE's strongest tracks. It is impossible to refute the merits of album opener \"Live for the Music.\" With a cutting three-chord riff and a tugging backbeat, Bad Company levels the overblown art rock of the '70s with a simple 4\/4 kick to the gut. The album's highlights are numerous. The glorious \"Silver, Blue and Gold,\" is possibly the band's best love song, while the title track travels on a lean path of bedrock. On much of the rest of Kids in the Street, Earle is in more subdued form, with a lower volume and more careful tempi, but this material truly confirms that he just keeps growing and improving as a songwriter. \"Same Old Stagolee\" is a smart and absorbing rewrite of the old folk tale, the title track artfully balances nostalgia and regret, and \"Faded Valentine\" and \"There Go a Fool\" are marvelous sketches of love and lovers gone wrong, Earle's favorite theme.
