Messenger Service: Gary Duncan (vocals, guitar); Dino Valenti (guitar); Mark Naftalin, Chuck Steaks (keyboards); Mark Ryan (bass); Greg Elmore (drums).
One of the group's better albums, despite coming so late in their history that it was ignored by almost everyone. "Hope," "Fire Brothers," and "Don't Cry for My Lady Love" are among the best songs the group ever cut, and "I Found Love" is one of the prettiest, most upbeat songs ever to come from any classic San Francisco band. Some of the rest is self-indulgent, but that's what this era of music was about -- the guitar pyrotechnics of "Song for Frisco" and "Play My Guitar" make them both more entertaining than their somewhat bland melodies; the latter song, in particular, sounds like a Marty Balin/Jefferson Airplane outtake that would have been right on target about four years before the release date of this album. The whole record feels that way, a throwback to the psychedelic era circa late 1967. It's also very much a folk-rock record, with a rich acoustic guitar texture on many of the songs. For the record, since the CD reissue has no personnel information, the band at this point was Dino Valenti (guitar, vocals), Greg Elmore (drums), Gary Duncan (vocals, guitar), Mark Ryan (bass), Mark Naftalin (keyboards), and Chuck Steaks (keyboards). If you ever wondered what the Airplane might have done as a follow-up to Surrealistic Pillow with Marty Balin still singing lead, this is it. ~ Bruce Eder

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/05/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Quicksilver-QUICKSILVER_DUQuq_de636fce-de52-4422-9e2a-4dcd5b84791d.jpg?v=1759044408
candlemass-psalms-for-the-dead
PSALMS FOR THE DEAD
Personnel: Robert Lowe (vocals); Lars Johansson, Mappe Bj?rkman (guitar); Carl Westholm (keyboards); Jan Lindh (drums); Mats Lev?n (background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Chris Laney.
Recording information: B.A.M. Studios, Stockholm (12/2011).
Editor: Chris Laney.
Photographers: Ulf Magnusson; Beatrice Csontos-Vid?n.
Candlemass did not act frivolously when selecting the title for their 11th career album, and third working with former Solitude Aeturnus singer Robert Lowe: Psalms for the Dead. In tandem with its mid-2012 release came the announcement that the celebrated Swedish doom titans would carry on touring now and then, but otherwise refrain from composing and recording new material, effectively marking the end of an often turbulent but overwhelmingly triumphant quarter-century run. Frankly, given the musical evidence at hand, it was time. By and large, Psalms for the Dead is another fine collection of songs: neither as brilliant nor as flawed as Candlemass' best and worst efforts past, consistent with the other two LPs (note the frequent backing organs) graced by Lowe's powerful operatic style, but creatively stagnant nonetheless. Clearly, Candlemass leader Leif Edling knows there's simply no point trying to mess with fan expectations or his band's well-established aesthetic (he's tried already), so why carry on beating it to death indefinitely? And for every persistent show of continued genius working within those limitations (including suicidal highlights like "Dancing in the Temple [Of the Mad Queen Bee]" and "The Lights of Thebe"), one must ask how long can grown men keep churning out songs about prophets ("Prophet") or waterwitches ("Waterwitch"), whatever they are? If anything (and notwithstanding the rare display of humor via the LP-closing "Black as Time"'s Monty Python-like intro), one can confidently state that Psalms for the Dead sees Candlemass going out, if not on a high, certainly in strong health, and obviously on their own terms. Godspeed old friends.... [Shortly following the album's release, it was learned that Lowe had in fact confirmed his exit from the band, leading to the recruitment of occasional Candlemass, Therion, and Krux vocalist Mats Lev?n as his on-stage replacement.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 06/05/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Candlemass-PSALMS-FOR-THE-DEAD_T4v4z.jpg?v=1741047349
sex-pistols-never-mind-the-bollocks-heres-the-sex-pistols
NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS: HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS
The Sex Pistols: Johnny Rotten (vocals); Steve Jones (guitar); Sid Vicious, Glen Matlock (bass); Paul Cook (drums).
Put this alongside BLONDE ON BLONDE and REVOLVER as an album that changed the face of rock forever. Along with the Clash and the Damned, the Sex Pistols were one of the first bands to channel the anger of dole-queue '70s Britain through a fierce musical amalgam of pub rock, the Stooges and the New York Dolls. Despite their influences, Johnny Rotten and company created something utterly unlike what had come before. Their anarchist/nihilist attitude, reflected in tunes like "Anarchy in the U.K." and "No Feelings" spoke to a new generation of kids, more profoundly disaffected than any other in the 20th century.
Rotten's snarling, distinctly British delivery of his agitational lyrics made Dylan sound like Mario Lanza, and the pile-driver guitars of Glen Matlock and Steve Jones move the songs along like a well-oiled but ornery machine. For all their iconoclasm, though, the Pistols were far more indebted to traditional pop song format (and dynamics) than most of the punk bands that followed in their wake. Consequently, for all their anger and urgency, such songs as "Submission" and "Pretty Vacant" enter the ear easily, only beginning to cause real internal damage once they get into your gut. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar. As eclectic as any record Simon had made, it also delved into zydeco and conjunto-flavored rock & roll while marking a surprising new lyrical approach (presaged on some songs on Hearts and Bones); for the most part, Simon abandoned a linear, narrative approach to his words, instead drawing highly poetic ("Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"), abstract ("The Boy in the Bubble"), and satiric ("I Know What I Know") portraits of modern life, often charged by striking images and turns of phrase torn from the headlines or overheard in contemporary speech. An enormously successful record, Graceland became the standard against which subsequent musical experiments by major artists were measured. Now that trend -- like all trends -- has come and gone, and yet Kreator persist: still displaying, as the new material contained here bears repeated witness, 100 percent commitment to the original, metal-thrashing mad raison d'?tre that launched them in the first place. Filled with fire and fury, indefatigable energy, and truly incensed lyrical bile for men of such middle-aged ripeness -- led as always by guiding light Mille Petrozza -- the opening title track and "Civilization Collapse" dispense a moshing master class, showing the young ones how it's done, and how it'll continue to be done as weaker, less driven bands young and old inevitably fall by the wayside. Acoustic guitar-augmented cuts like "United in Hate" and "The Few, the Proud, the Broken" prove equally devastating before they're though, and just when more commercially inclined musical considerations appear to threaten thrash's supremacy, like, say, during the highly melodic parts of "From Flood into Fire," "Victory Will Come," and "Until Our Paths Cross Again," one can rest assured that a pedal-to-the-metal onslaught lies just around the corner. To wit, both the slower, mildly Arabian-psychedelic bridge of "Death to the World" and the contemplative mood-meets-murmured vocals of "Your Heaven, My Hell" weigh in, passing at Kreator's hit-and-miss experiments of the 1990s before returning to the prevailing mosh-fest, and within that context there really can be no hard feelings -- what's past is past. The irony of which should be lost on neither fans nor the bandmembers themselves, since embracing the past clearly paved the way toward Kreator's future by affording them this second lease on life and career. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar. But there was more to it than that. For one thing, the album, as eclectic as any Simon had made, also delved into zydeco on "That Was Your Mother" (on which Simon was accompanied by Good Rockin' Dopsie & the Twisters) and into conjunto-flavored rock & roll on "All Around the World or the Myth of Fingerprints" (on which he was accompanied by Los Lobos). For another, beyond its aural delights, Graceland marked a surprising new lyrical approach (though it was presaged by some songs on Hearts and Bones, if anyone was listening). For the most part, Simon abandoned a linear, narrative approach to his words, instead drawing highly poetic ("Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes"), abstract ("The Boy in the Bubble"), and satiric ("I Know What I Know") portraits of modern life, often charged by striking images and turns of phrase torn from the headlines or overheard in contemporary speech. When combined, the unusual musical contexts and surprising lyrics (along with Simon's own ease and confidence as a singer) made for a creative rebirth for an artist already known for a string of artistic accomplishments. As a result, Graceland went multi-platinum, won Grammys for Album of the Year and Record of the Year (for the title song), and became the standard against which subsequent musical experiments by major artists were measured. (Besides, it has a good beat and you can dance to it.)
[The 25th Anniversary edition of Graceland arrives in several different formats: a single-disc expanded by four cuts -- a demo of "Homeless," an alternate version of "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes," an early version of "All Around the World or the Myth of Fingerprints," and "The Story of 'Graceland' as Told by Paul Simon"; a double-disc that contains all those four tracks and adds demos of "You Can Call Me Al" and "Crazy Love" to the CD, then devotes a DVD to the acclaimed feature-length documentary Under African Skies; and a deluxe box, exclusively sold at Amazon, that separates the bonus tracks onto a second CD, adds a third CD of five live tracks recorded on a 1989 tour of Spain, then has the DVD of the documentary, in addition to various tchotchkes, books, and replicas. Among all these musical extras lie only two new archival cuts: the spare demos of "You Can Call Me Al" and "Crazy Love," items that are surely worth the time of the devoted, but what makes this worthwhile for those who have purchased either of the previous reissues of Graceland -- the latest arriving in 2011, just months before the release of this deluxe set -- is the presence of Under African Skies, the feature directed by Joe Berlinger (who helmed the Metallica doc Some Kind of Monster), who doesn't shy away from some of the uncomfortable questions surrounding the creation of Graceland.] ~ William Ruhlmann

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/05/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/paul-simon-graceland-25th-anniversary-edition-gra_qImZ7.jpg?v=1759410376
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/products/who-pinball-wizards-collection_3vGxV.jpg?v=1737907804
ultravox-brilliant
Brilliant

Brilliant is a Music CDs from Ultravox

Format: CD

Released: 06/05/2012

BURN UP is a Records & LPs from Jimmy Page

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/05/2012

Personnel includes: Leonard Cohen (vocals, guitar).
After recovering from his traumatic studio experiences with Phil Spector on DEATH OF A LADIES MAN (Spector was said to have brandished a gun at some point), Cohen retreated to friendlier sonic climes.
