Following its release he moved to the Detroit-based label Palladium and returned to hard-driving rock & roll with Smokin' O.P.'s, the polar opposite of Brand New Morning. According to legend, the title stands for "smoking other people's songs," which makes sense since this is a cover album that even covers Bob Seger & the Last Heard. In other words, it's nothing like the intimate, reflective, risky Brand New Morning, but that doesn't matter since it rocks so well and since it reveals that Seger isn't just a first-class bandleader and rock songwriter, but that he's a terrific interpreter of other writers' songs. Even well-worn tunes like "Bo Diddley" and "If I Were a Carpenter" get made fresh by internalizing the hooks, turning them into something fresh and original. That's also true of songs by such contemporaries as Stephen Stills ("Love the One You're With") and Leon Russell ("Humming Bird"), and he also breathes fire into blues and rock stalwarts like "Let It Rock," "Turn on Your Love Light," and "Jesse James." Smokin' O.P.'s closes out with two originals, one new (the fine, but not especially noteworthy "Someday") and one old (the perennial "Heavy Music"). Neither change the essential character of the album, which is just a really fun, hard-rocking record that bought Seger some time while reasserting the fact that he could really rock. He could -- and he could rock really well -- which is why Smokin' O.P.'s remains a lot of fun, even if it's a relatively minor work in Seger's canon. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/07/2005

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/bob-seger-smokin-ops_SXcfT_cc77b125-90ea-4aca-b2c6-fd6b453e56e6.jpg?v=1759446588
steel-pulse-true-democracy
TRUE DEMOCRACY
Steel Pulse: Ronald "Stepper" McQueen (bass guitar); David Hinds, Alphonso Martin, Selwyn Brown, Steve Nisbett, Basil Gabbidon.
Personnel: David Hinds (vocals, guitar); Selwyn Brown (vocals, keyboards); Phonso Martin, Alphonso Martin (vocals, percussion); Basil Gabbidon (guitar); Ronnie McQueen (bass guitar); Steve Nesbitt, Steve Nisbett (drums).
Liner Note Author: Roger Steffens.
Recording information: Feedback Studios, Denmark (1981).
Photographer: Eric Watson .
Unknown Contributor Role: Alphonso Martin.
This 1982 release, Steel Pulse's first for Elektra, marks the band's move toward a more buoyant, pop-inflected sound. TRUE DEMOCRACY does not have the edgy roots feel of albums like HANDSWORTH REVOLUTION; instead, it demonstrates the group's synthesis of reggae rhythms with high production values and well-crafted melodies. But while the album's stylistic corners may be sanded for radio-ready accessibility, TRUE DEMOCRACY contains some of the band's boldest, most explicitly political songwriting.
The opener, "Chant a Psalm," invokes the names of biblical figures and puts the listener on notice of the album's conscious, spiritually minded tone. There are classic Rasta themes, such as "Worth His Weight in Gold," a song based on the teachings of Marcus Garvey, and songs that overtly address social and political issues. "A Who Responsible?" takes on the history of racial injustice, "Leggo Beast" is an indictment of prostitution, and "Man No Sober" looks at alcoholism. Yet for all its seriousness, TRUE DEMOCRACY has a light, danceable vibe, exemplified in the party anthem "Ravers," one of Steel Pulse's best tunes. Though sometimes overlooked in favor of the early Island albums, this is one of the band's most consistent and enjoyable releases. The two sets of brothers who comprised Jodeci earned an exalted rank in early-'90s soul via sensual torch songs bathed in funk with firm roots in the unforgettable melodies of Motown. The group could seduce overtly with a straight-forward grab like "Freek 'N You" or move smoothly as they did with a reinterpretation of Stevie Wonder's "Lately" that somehow managed to add to the love and longing of the original. They could exude an air of vulnerability on "Come & Talk To Me," or pledge eternity with "Forever My Love." While Jodeci exuded an air of sex, there was an instinctive subtlety about them that made them the perfect counterpoint to Boyz II Men's G-rated soul. Elektra's bid for a mainstream reggae cash-in helps explain the slick, highly polished sound of EARTH CRISIS. The breezy "Steppin' Out" and the bouncing, poppy "Tightrope" (both of which became permanent additions to the band's live repertoire) kick off the set, buttressed by bright synth lines and lush, layered vocal harmonies.
Yet Steel Pulse's particular skill has always been in giving lock-step reggae grooves singable melodies and a smooth, accessible patina. In this way, EARTH CRISIS is one of the band's most emblematic albums, a fact reflected in its great commercial success. Admirably, Steel Pulse maintains their commitment to socially and politically conscious themes here, on the environmentally concerned title track and the self-explanatory "Grab Education," among others. Though it does not match the artistic heights of other Steel Pulse releases, EARTH CRISIS is characterized by strong songs and fine musicianship, and remains one of the band's best-known albums.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/07/2005

Television: Tom Verlaine (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Richard Lloyd (guitar, background vocals); Fred Smith (bass, background vocals); Billy Ficca (drums).
Recorded at Sound Masters and Record Plant, New York, New York.
