While the surfaces of Favorite Waitress are significantly more polished than that (this is the Felice Brothers' first album to be cut in a proper recording studio), this music often has the slightly shambolic, loose-yet-committed tone of those early sessions at Big Pink, and the songwriting certainly follows the rumpled blend of impressionism and silliness that marked Dylan's Basement Tapes classics like \"Quinn the Eskimo\" or \"Million Dollar Bash,\" bolstered by the Zimmerman-flavored drawl of Ian Felice's vocals. Favorite Waitress feels mildly schizophrenic as it jumps from moody, cinematic numbers like \"Alien\" and \"Chinatown\" to the playful, boozy swagger of \"Cherry Licorice\" and \"Woman Next Door,\" but the overall effect is a band that's dug in their heels in the studio and is going to make the most of the way the individual voices bounce off one another, and if they're shooting for something less challenging on Favorite Waitress, the feel of the music clearly seems to suit them. This lineup -- Ian on vocals and guitar; James Felice on accordion, keyboards, and vocals, Greg Farley on fiddle and vocals, Josh Rawson on bass and vocals, and David \"Esta\" Estabrook on drums -- manages to play with greater precision than the original edition of the Felice Brothers without ever sounding like they're reaching for anything more \"professional,\" and Favorite Waitress suggests this band has learned how to raise goofing off to the level of an art form. With Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Jim Hall (guitar), Percy Heath (bass) and the fiery Philly Joe Jones (drums), Evans shows a brighter, more spirited execution in his playing than usual.\r\nOn the jumping opener \"You And The Night And The Music\" Evans is in exceptional form as he nimbly executes very bop-ish right hand lines that weave and swirl through the changes. In fact, with only a few exceptions, White Lung keep exceedingly true to their template of marrying a complex sense of melody with abrasive punk brilliance following the Dischord Records post-punk ideal and '90s grunge pop acts like Hole or Seaweed. Tracks like \"Snake Jaw\" and \"I Believe You\" are deceptively intricate, zooming by so quickly the listener might miss some of the strange breakdowns or more complicated guitar parts that only happen once. It's when the band embrace their stranger whims that Deep Fantasy really succeeds. Singles like \"Face Down\" and \"Drown with the Monster\" play things a little too safe, relatively speaking, trading in guitarist Kenneth William's off-kilter patterns for more predictable chord progressions and song structures. The album's ten songs still come and go without even reaching a half-hour running time, so you don't have to wait too long before one of the band's more imaginative guitar hooks shows up, while Way's vocals push every song to the edge of collapse. This hardly signals an excursion into electronic music for the folkie, but Barlow does paint Mutineers with many appealingly muted colors, an approach that seems surprisingly bright after the off-white Foundling. At its best, the production is so quietly textured it never draws attention to itself; instead, it enhances the songs themselves, letting them breathe and settle. It's not simply that the production of Mutineers is well-drawn, so are the melodies of the songs. The maelstrom of hype surrounding self-modeled Hollywood pop star Lana Del Rey's 2012 breakthrough album, Born to Die, found critics, listeners, and pop culture aficionados divided about her detached, hyper-stylized approach to every aspect of her music and public persona. What managed to get overlooked by many was that Born to Die made such a polarizing impression because it actually offered something that didn't sound like anything else. Del Rey's sultry, overstated orchestral pop recast her as some sort of vaguely imagined chanteuse for a generation raised on Adderall and the Internet, with heavy doses of Twin Peaks atmosphere adding a creepy sheen to intentionally vapid (and undeniably catchy) radio hits. Follow-up album Ultraviolence shifts gears considerably, building a thick, slow-moving atmosphere with its languid songs and opulent arrangements. Gone are the big beats and glossy production that resulted in tracks like \"Summertime Sadness.\" Instead, Ultraviolence begins with the protracted, rolling melancholia of \"Cruel World,\" nearly seven minutes of what feels like a sad, reverb-drenched daydream. The song sets the stage for the rest of the album, which simmers with a haunted, yearning feeling but never boils over. Even the most pop-friendly moments here are steeped in patient, jazz-inflected moodiness, as with the sad-eyed longing of \"Shades of Cool\" or the unexpected tempo changes that connect the slinky verses of single \"West Coast\" to their syrupy, swaying choruses. Production from the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach might have something to do with the metered restraint that permeates the album, with songs like \"Sad Girl\" carrying some of the slow-burning touches of greasy blues-rock Auerbach is known for. A few puzzling moments break up the continuity of the album. The somewhat hooky elements of \"Brooklyn Baby\" can't quite rise above its disjointed song structure and cringeable lyrics that could be taken either as mockery of the hipster lifestyle or self-parody. \"Money Power Glory\" steps briefly out of the overall dreamscape of the album, sounding like a tossed-off outtake from the Born to Die sessions. Despite these mild missteps, Ultraviolence thrives for the most part in its density, meant clearly to be absorbed as an entire experience, with even its weaker pieces contributing to a mood that's consumptive, sexy, and as eerie as big-budget pop music gets.
