Bestowed with an executive production credit, Asahd is present in more than a visual sense. On the "Sesame Street visits a black church" number "I Love You So Much," Khaled and Chance the Rapper exalt their kids, with the former in endearingly effusive overdrive, beaming "You're an icon, you're a legend" and, motivated perhaps by witnessing Asahd devour some strained carrots, "the greatest that ever did it." That and the album's concluding moment of touching thanks are among the most family-friendly tracks in the Khaled discography, which swells here with 21 additional selections of mostly celebratory bluster. Due to the plinking "I'm the One," led by Justin Bieber, and "Wild Thoughts," a Rihanna-fronted update of Santana's "Maria Maria," the album had major hits before it arrived. Khaled old guards such as Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, Mavado, and Nas make requisite notable appearances, while newer collaborators 21 Savage and Migos add some youthful energy with contributions to the album's comparatively street-oriented, paper-chasing, ominous-sounding second half. The beats are fully outfitted, and several are suitably immense. Compared to Major Key, there's a little less objectification going on. Just as significant, the second track on which Chance is featured isn't the lone gospel connection. Almost lost in this lengthy flow of content is an a cappella Betty Wright interlude and what trails it: an uplifted Cool & Dre co-production fronted by Alicia Keys with a clean and righteous verse from Nicki Minaj, "Go to war for every black queen that they lynched, and my pockets on chubby but they can't be pinched." ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Dj-Khaled-GRATEFUL-EXPLICIT-VERSION-URBAN-OUTFITT_PUhRJ.jpg?v=1759153799
bone-thugs-new-waves
NEW WAVES
While Bone Thugs-N-Harmony continued working on the sequel to 2013's The Art of War: World War III, co-founders Krayzie Bone and Bizzy Bone recorded New Waves, a full-length simply credited to Bone Thugs. The modified name is significant, as this is a departure from the group's usual sound. While their signature fast, complex raps and vocal harmonies are still present, there's nothing resembling G-funk to be heard here, and the ominousness of their earlier material is absent. Instead, they go for more of a polished sound informed by EDM and pop/R&B, even getting Far East Movement and Scott Storch to produce one track each. The group's other three members (Layzie Bone, Wish Bone, and Flesh-n-Bone) all appear on "Waves," and a wide array of guests contribute to the rest of the album, including Stephen Marley, Bun B, Yelawolf, and Korn's Jonathan Davis. Each one went platinum, as did the parent release. This consequently made Tiller one of the decade's major R&B breakouts. For True to Self, his follow-up, Tiller opted to employ an almost entirely new and slightly larger cast of collaborators -- a little over two dozen in number, once again strictly producers, no guest vocalists -- yet the method nonetheless seems to be "If the style you coined ain't broke, don't fix it." Like T R A P S O U L, True to Self is primarily thumping, dispirited slow jams laced with smudged samples -- '90s R&B once again the crate raided with the greatest frequency. This kind of thing sounds a little less novel in 2017 than it did years earlier, but True to Self is more colorful and melodic than what preceded it. Likewise, fame evidently gave its maker more issues to write about, including new romantic complications, greater wealth, and a deeper sense of humility. The latter quality is evident in several cuts. When he references missing a work deadline due to his inability to resist temptation, he does so as if he's admitting fault, not boasting. In the opening "Rain on Me," worried about losing his lover, he declares "I wanna grow gray with you." He even slips in a line about providing for his grandmother in the foe-flicking "Blowing Smoke." On the surface, Tiller still gives off that wallflower baller vibe; the brashness of the debut largely remains. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Bryson-Tiller-TRUE-TO-SELF-EXPLICIT-CD_kJktE.jpg?v=1759266367
post-malone-stoney
Stoney
On Post Malone's studio debut Stoney, the Dallas-raised musician with gold grills and braids sing-raps his way through an album's worth of woozy R&B-inflected hip-hop. As a fan of rap and its associated culture, Post delivers with moderate respect, careful not to toe the precarious line over which others like Iggy Azalea and Riff Raff have stumbled. Although he plays guitar and is influenced by Tim McGraw as much as Kanye West, Stoney is mostly devoid of that country twang, save for some outlaw grit on "Broken Whiskey Glass" and faint strumming on "Go Flex" (bonus track "Leave" actually captures his true cross-genre nature best). Mostly, that part of his background only comes through when he chooses to sing. Those tracks -- notably "No Option" and "I Fall Apart" -- work best, featuring strong vocals that quiver when he pushes it to the limit. Guest vocalists and producers like Kehlani ("Feel"), River Tiber ("Cold"), Pharrell Williams ("Up There"), and Quavo and Metro Boomin ("Congratulations") bolster Stoney with both atmosphere and credibility, while tourmate Justin Bieber increases the star power on the sweet "Cha-Cha"/"Hotline Bling"-esque "Deja Vu." On the aptly titled Stoney, Post Malone provides an appropriate soundtrack for a certain type of recreational rest and relaxation. ~ Neil Z. Starting with Young's work in Buffalo Springfield, some of the nuggets include the psychedelic calliope that is "Down To The Wire" and the fuzz guitar/Motown-inspired "Mr. Soul." Throughout these ten years of recordings, Young constantly dug deep, touching on controversial topics be it his CSN&Y masterpiece about the student massacre at Kent State ("Ohio"), compositions dealing with the ups and downs of the drug culture ("Needle And The Damage Done," "Tonight's The Night") or history's dark chapters of racial injustice ("Cortez The Killer," "Southern Man").
Neil Young's choice of accompanists also allowed him to explore many different avenues. White Knight belongs to the latter category. A star-studded affair -- 12 of the 15 songs feature a collaborator -- White Knight covers a lot of stylistic ground (as would be fitting on a record that features Daryl Hall, Joe Walsh, Trent Reznor, and Robyn), but it's constricted by its chintzy production. A master of the studio, Rundgren jettisons any semblance of warmth for a crisp, clean computerized sound -- an aesthetic that has been common for Todd in the 21st century. Happily, every one of the featured musicians is game to play along with Rundgren. Reznor and his partner Atticus Ross give "Deaf Ears" some chilly dissonance, Daryl Hall brings soul to "Chance for Us," Moe Berg's turn on "Let's Do This" is buoyant power pop, Robyn is an ideal counterpoint on the AOR ballad "That Could Have Been Me," and you can hear Donald Fagen grin on the anti-Trump groover "Tin Foil Hat." All these prove that White Knight has a strong song foundation. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

On face value, this soundtrack made a lot more sense as a release in 1970, before the advent of home video, than it seems to in 2000. The movie M*A*S*H was part of that new wave of American cinema in which the traditional Hollywood method of scoring, with original, Romantic-style instrumental music backing many of the most important scenes, was abandoned. Instead, Johnny Mandel's work largely involved arranging period tunes and effect music (especially military and football-related themes), although he also wrote a memorable main title theme ("Suicide Is Painless"), which proved to be a gold mine many times over with its use in the long-running television series spawned two years after the movie. The "Theme From M*A*S*H," as it's usually known, is heard in several different arrangements, including the often heard jazz version by Ahmad Jamal, and its very first appearance, with its thoroughly depressing lyric sung in the style of the Lettermen (vocals credited to "The Mash"). It also reappears in its best incarnation ever, as a folk-blues solo number in the middle of the sequence labeled "Painless' Suicide, Funeral, and Resurrection" (and one wishes the singer were credited). The rest is primarily incidental music evoking the period and setting within the film and the ironies behind its violent, comical action, arranged by Mandel, all interspersed with extended dialogue sequence. It holds up much better than one would expect, the editing of the dialogue and music summing up the movie beautifully and in a surprisingly lively and exciting fashion. And that bluesy rendition of "Suicide Is Painless" is a good musical bonus as well, and points up one bet that the producers of the television series missed -- in the first season, when they had Loudon Wainwright III as a recurring character (Captain Spaulding), he sang a few songs, but he never sang "Suicide Is Painless." ~ Bruce Eder

Genre: Stage & Screen

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

Brand New Sealed | Freddie King | Texas Oil: Federal Recordings 1960-62 | Vinyl | Release Date: 06/23/2017

Genre: Jazz

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/freddie-king-texas-oil-federal-recordings-1960-62-_Q3xXJ_771c7102-4fd4-449d-8fff-094925d56ad5.jpg?v=1758943797
king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-murder-of-the-universe-vomit-splatter-colored-vinyl
Murder Of The Universe (Vomit Splatter Colored Vinyl)
King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard's second album of 2017 is a rampaging, feverish blast of sci-fi prog punctuated by whizzing synths and robotic voice-overs. Murder of the Universe is broken into three chapters, each telling a tale of humanity being driven out of existence by AI-driven machines and cyborgs. Subtract the story and it's trademark King Gizzard, with pummeling guitar riffs pitched between garage punk and heavy metal, Stu MacKenzie's yowling yelps at the mike, and the rhythm section's unstoppable drive combining to make exhilarating music that flashes like lightning trapped in a bottle and hits harder than Thor's hammer. The first two chapters work the best. "The Tale of the Altered Beast" has electrical sparks shooting from the riffs, sticky hooks that slice through the gnarly guitar crunch, and pleasantly evil voice-over work by Leah Senior. "The Lord of Lightning vs Balrog" brings back large chunks of Nonagon Infinity's sound, even reprising some of the melodies and words, while housing the album's best song, "The Lord of Lightning." How much the listener enjoys the third chapter, "Han-Tyumi and the Murder of the Universe," might depend on their tolerance for graphic descriptions of a cyborg vomiting, and in the process, murdering the universe. Perhaps it's a little overdone; and not only that, this section is the least interesting musically and the story is slight, which is often the case on albums like this. There are still some fun snippets of doom psych in this chapter and on the whole, the album is a nice diversion for King Gizzard, though it's not very adventurous or experimental; it's mostly fun, but a little predictable -- more like something they should have given away free instead of calling it an album and selling it. Still, anytime King Gizzard hit the studio, the result is worth hearing, and even run-of-the-mill Gizzard leaves most neo-psych freaks swimming in their sizable wake. ~ Tim Sendra

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

Best Sellers: Top Seller

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-murder-of-the-universe-vomit-splatter-colored-vinyl_EQ5t8.jpg?v=1747137003
big-boi-boomiverse-explicit-version
BOOMIVERSE (EXPLICIT VERSION)
After the release of his second solo album, Vicious Lies & Dangerous Rumours, Big Boi followed executive L.A. Reid, who signed OutKast in the early '90s, from Def Jam to Epic, and with Phantogram recorded the Big Grams EP. Big Boi's continued interest in alternate routes notwithstanding, his third solo album is closer in spirit to his first one, Sir Lucious Left Foot. This deeply involves longtime partners Organized Noize as producers. Other old affiliates, such as Killer Mike, Scar Smith, and Pimp C, chip in as well. The effort to differentiate this from Big Boi's congested previous album is not only musical but cosmetic as well, as the names of the guest artists -- also including Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Jeezy, and Gucci Mane -- aren't integrated with the track titles on physical copies. Big Boi's high-velocity wit and Organized Noize's liquid, bumping backdrops remain an innate match, familiar and fresh at once on "Kill Jill," "Get Wit It," and especially "In the South." Foremost among the few cuts without Organized Noize is "All Night," seemingly the lone concerted attempt to attain a crossover hit. Although it's co-produced by hitmakers Dr. Luke and Cirkut, the lighthearted track leads with a rollicking piano line and would be more at home on Idlewild, trailing "Call the Law," than on any given album that features the duo's efforts. Additionally, rebounding "Shutterbugg" producer Scott Storch finds Big Boi again for "Order of Operations," appropriately enough a steely number about financial responsibility: "First hundred thousand, I bought a Lexus/First million, I was 20, I learn my lesson, I bought some land." From start to finish, Big Boi is so at ease with assured nonchalance that he blithely makes references to a mass murderer and an alleged serial rapist, and occasionally slips into some other juvenile business. Otherwise, he's in elite statesman form. He and his collaborators likewise don't seem all that concerned about the album's place in contemporary rap, and it's all the better for it. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Rap & Hip-Hop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Big-Boi-BOOMIVERSE-EXPLICIT-VERSION_tUtdC.jpg?v=1759301234
otis-redding-thomas-carla-king-queen-50th-anniversary-edition
KING & QUEEN (50TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION)
Personnel: Otis Redding, Carla Thomas (vocals); Joe Arnold (alto saxophone); Isaac Hayes (keyboards).
Booker T. & The MG's: Booker T. Fittingly, the film receives an expertly curated soundtrack -- one that lasts an hour and 42 minutes, which is just ten minutes shorter than the film itself. Such a long running time allows the curators to flash their good taste and skills in crate digging. Baby Driver is anchored by a few crowd-pleasers from several different styles and decades -- the Damned's "Neat Neat Neat" bounces up against the Commodores' "Easy," Queen's "Brighton Rock" rears its head, as does the Simon & Garfunkel song that provides the film with its title -- but individual songs aren't the point of Baby Driver: what matters is the journey, and this swift race through soul, jazz, rock, and pop offers an incredible ride. Sometimes its sensibility seems a bit rooted in the swinging '90s -- that's the era when mixing up easy listening exotica with Northern soul and obscure rock codified as enduringly hip -- but the music here is good enough to obliterate any aesthetic objections. Plus, the producers have fun with juxtapositions, placing T. Rex's "Debora" next to Beck's "Debra," letting Googie Rene's dancefloor groover "Smokey Joe's La La" glide into the Beach Boys' "Let's Go Away for Awhile," and switching gears from Brenda Holloway's "Every Little Bit Hurts" into Blur's frenetic "Intermission." From its song selection to its sequencing, Baby Driver is a tour de force of record geekdom and one hell of a good time. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Soundtrack

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Various-Artists-BABY-DRIVER-MUSIC-FROM-THE-MOTION-PICTU_kk9N4.jpg?v=1740411330
municipal-waste-slime-punishment-coke-bottle-green
SLIME & PUNISHMENT COKE BOTTLE GREEN

SLIME & PUNISHMENT COKE BOTTLE GREEN is a Records & LPs from Municipal Waste

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/municipal-waste-slime-punishment-coke-bottle-green_xUrAJ.jpg?v=1759159234
prince-the-revolution-purple-rain-12-single
Purple Rain (12" Single)
Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Matt "Dr." Fink (vocals, keyboards); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z (percussion).
Additional personnel: Apollonia (vocals); Novi Novog (violin, viola); David Coleman, Suzie Katayama (cello).
Engineers include: Susan Rogers, Peggy Mac, David Riukin.
A soundtrack to a movie so appalling that it is infinitely wiser to let the record stand on its own merits. 'Darling Nikki' accidentally set the PMRC ball rolling, but the heady lilt of the title track and the crushing 'When Doves Cry' can pardon him that.

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/prince-the-revolution-purple-rain-12-single_5COOb.jpg?v=1740713782
gong-gong-est-mort-vive-gong-import
Gong Est Mort Vive Gong (Import)

Gong Est Mort Vive Gong (Import) is a Records & LPs from Gong

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/gong-gong-est-mort-vive-gong-import_FnSaW.jpg?v=1759258588
kai-hansen-thank-you-wacken-cd
Thank You Wacken (Cd

Thank You Wacken (Cd is a Music CDs from Kai Hansen

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: DDD

Format: CD

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/kai-hansen-thank-you-wacken-cd_dHFU4.jpg?v=1741080474
cash-nelson-jennings-kris-highwayman-hq-insert
HIGHWAYMAN -HQ/INSERT-
The Highwaymen: Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson.
These old friends have appeared together in various combinations, but never as effectively as on the epic title song here, written by Jimmy Webb. It's been done to death -- or so it would seem. Though Willie Nile comes by Dylan's influence honestly, the other side of his lineage comes from the punk and rock clubs of the Lower East Side during the late 1970s -- Max's Kansas City, CBGB's, et al.
Nile decided to cut this record after he performed "Love Minus Zero/No Limit" and ''A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" at a 75th birthday celebration for Dylan. He won the crowd, but the inspiration he originally got from those songs was renewed. There are few curve balls here; half this material appeared on the initial Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits volume. That's part of this album's beauty: Nile takes on tunes whose impact has been blunted by their ubiquitous presence, and pours gasoline on them. His takes are spirited and often swaggering, with a garage band aesthetic full of rock & roll heart.
The reading of "The Times They Are A-Changin'" is classic Nile. Though there is an acoustic guitar, it's the razor-wire electric guitar riff and power chords, swirling Farfisa organ, and crackling snare that drive a double-time tempo that governs the urgency in its lyric. Further, Nile's singing is buoyed by a backing chorus as rowdy as the Pogues. He answers it with a slide guitar-driven roots rock "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35," delivered as a bar-closing anthem with everybody on the stools chiming in for all they're worth. His version of "Blowin' in the Wind" is done by way of inspiration from the Ramones. When taking on "Subterranean Homesick Blues," Nile understands he doesn't have Mike Bloomfield. He compensates with a boogie-woogie, pumping Jerry Lee Lewis-style piano. Nile shows his sensitive side with a tender rendering of "I Want You," weaving a delicate mix of acoustic guitars, bass, and shuffling brushed snare. There's a world weariness in his gruff delivery that imbues the word "want" with new meaning as it stands in the loneliness of middle age. As delivered here, "Love Minus Zeus/No Limit" evidences that Nile remains completely enchanted with its lyric and melody; every syllable drips with a weathered and unadorned commitment. The Basement Tapes-era "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" is tough to screw up, and Nile doesn't: this is the only overly restrained thing here. He adds a hard twist to "Every Grain of Sand" from Saved. It's not sung with reverence as originally recorded, but unmoored desperation. Closer "Abandoned Love" was kept in the vaults for years before seeing the light of day on a compilation. Nile's reading deftly reveals the Desire-era tune as an elegy: Its pain, regret, reverie, and resolve are borne by the ghost of love even as its protagonist carries on with relentless, restless forward motion. Dylan didn't need another covers record. Thankfully, Nile didn't give a damn and delivered one of the best. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/willie-nile-positively-bob-willie-nile-sings-bob-dylan_4u1uy.jpg?v=1759423318
son-house-special-rider-blues-original-1940-1942-mississippi-recordings
Special Rider Blues (original 1940-1942 Mississippi Recordings)

Special Rider Blues (original 1940-1942 Mississippi Recordings) is a Records & LPs from Son House

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/son-house-special-rider-blues-original-1940-1942-mississippi-recordings_NMTOT.jpg?v=1758844415
r-e-m-part-lies-part-hear
PART LIES, PART HEAR
R.E.M. close out their Warner contract -- not to mention their entire career -- with the double-disc Part Lies Part Heart Part Truth Part Garbage, their first compilation to combine early recordings from their time at IRS with their major-label hits for Warner. It's misleading to look at these as merely two separate eras, as it more accurately breaks down into a three-act structure: the IRS years when R.E.M. were the kings of college rock; the stretch between 1988-1995 when they were international superstars; and then the slow decline of 1998-2011, the years after Bill Berry, the years when Peter Buck, Michael Stipe, and Mike Mills tried to redefine the group as a trio before finally realizing they'd said all they could say. Part Lies gives equal time to each act -- there are 13 songs from IRS, 14 from the golden years at Warner, 13 from the trio years (including a revival of the mid-'80s outtake "Bad Day," which feels like a slight stretch) -- an eminently fair move that tells the story while slightly obscuring the import of the tale. Inevitably, the jangle pop and murk of the '80s are downplayed -- "Can't Get There from Here," "Pretty Persuasion," "Feeling Gravity's Pull" are missing -- in favor of a heavy dose of new millennial material, including three songs from 2011's respectable Collapse into Now and three perfectly fine new songs, which means the last ten or so cuts are songs that fairweather fans of either the '80s or '90s just won't care much about or possibly even know. Nevertheless, this last act is shown in a good light -- the benefit of a comp is that it's totally possible, even welcome, to downplay dull lapses like Around the Sun -- and, when combined with well-chosen highlights from the band's powerful first two acts, adds up to a thorough narrative of R.E.M.'s entire career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/23/2017

Meshuggah are simultaneously credited and maligned for the creation of "djent," a sound that has spawned countless -- and mostly bad -- imitators. But these Swedes have never tried to sound like anyone but themselves, each album carving that track further into metal history. A year shy of their 30th anniversary, the quintet offers another set of intensely syncopated, technical, hard-grooving metal that is not remarkably different than anything they've done before. That said, it's still intricate as hell, meticulously composed, ridiculously complex, and executed with a manic precision beyond the imagination of most metal mortals. The Violent Sleep of Reason doesn't try to reinvent the wheel but to reaffirm its purpose.
That said, this date marks the first time since 1994's None EP that the Swedes have recorded organically -- i.e., absolutely live -- in the studio without overdubs or error correction in post-production. As a result, this recording captures their monstrous agility and adrenaline-drenched physical athleticism; it articulates the power-surging explosiveness their shows do but in much higher fidelity. Arguably, Meshuggah haven't displayed this kind of unhinged energy on an album since Chaosphere at the end of the last century.
They make their case on album opener (and longest cut at over seven minutes) "Clockworks." The jam's brutal riffs and spiky, spiraling guitar solos are simultaneously punishing and almost unearthly, but Tomas Haake's groove-laden slamming, hyper-limber drumming steals the show. The tonal contrast in the guitar and bass riffs on "Born in Dissonance" is easier to grasp, but the stop-on-a-dime changes and double-time drumming -- coupled with squalling solos and sub-vamps -- turn this notion on its head. The title track is disorienting initially; it commences in forward motion without a backbeat. It's like the song's obliterating breakdown bridge (sans anchoring rhythm) became its intro. Jens Kidman's lyric delivery about disastrous regional and international military conflicts, natural disasters, and class tensions is appended by Fredrik Thordendal's angular lead guitar that duels with M?rten Hagstr?m's dissonant six-string riffs, interlocking Haake rhythms, and Dick L?vgren's bass whomp. While "Stifled" is slower with all its detuned guitar and bass weirdness and intense breakdown mania, it benefits from a wandering, labyrinthine Thordendal solo. Closer "Into Decay" is the physical bookend to "Clockworks" but it's sludgy as hell. Because of the guitar and bass distortion and initially slow pace, its various tonalities, syncopation, and riffing tech are temporarily obscured; they establish their presence inside two minutes, as the band swells and collides in a tremendous clashing finish.
On The Violent Sleep of Reason, Meshuggah set out simply to capture the energy of their live shows in the studio. They accomplish that in spades, and reaffirm why they don't need to worry about innovation: their writing and playing accomplish that in their very nature. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/meshuggah-violent-sleep-of-reason-greyblack-splatter_UsTRD.jpg?v=1758975408
jim-hall-the-complete-jazz-guitar
The Complete Jazz Guitar

The Complete Jazz Guitar is a Records & LPs from Jim Hall

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/jim-hall-the-complete-jazz-guitar-_6fzOK.jpg?v=1759280286
onerepublic-native-2-lps
Native (2 Lp's)
As a songwriter for other contemporary pop stars, Ryan Tedder has proven his talent for writing intensely catchy songs that stick in people's heads. This is evidenced not only by his success producing songs for such artists as Adele, Leona Lewis, and Maroon 5, but also with his own band OneRepublic. And as with 2006's Dreaming Out Loud and 2009's Waking Up, One Republic's 2013 third studio album, Native, once again gives Tedder a vehicle to turn his hitmaking abilities on himself, and in the process, steal just a little bit of the spotlight away from his more recognizable clients. And why shouldn't he? Tedder has a burnished, resonant singing voice and passionate, emotive vocal style that's perfectly suited for the uplifting crossover songs he so expertly writes. In many ways, OneRepublic are a clearing house for mainstream pop sensibilities, and Native is no exception, with songs such as "If I Lose Myself Again," "I Lived," and "Au Revoir," touching upon the soaring, piano-driven alt-rock of Coldplay, the funky, synthetic, blue-eyed-soul of Maroon 5, and the slick yet earnest R&B balladry of any number of modern divas. Which isn't to say that the songs on Native are unremarkable. On the contrary, Tedder reveals a broad palette of stylistic inspiration, and cuts like the roiling, romantic "Light It Up" and the atmospheric and yearning "Can't Stop" touch upon the ruminative qualities of indie rock, the falsetto-heavy tones of Prince-styled lead vocals, and the wide-eyed drama of '80s Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. Elsewhere on Native, tracks like "Counting Starts" reveal that Tedder has clearly been listening to the British folk-rockers Mumford & Sons and, as evidenced by the percussive operatic of "Feel Again," Florence and the Machine. Of course, with Tedder having possibly worked with any one of the artists mentioned here prior to recording Native, one could argue that he's merely been listening to his own music. The island influences make this an enjoyable summertime soundtrack, but aside from the outright tropical cabana vibe of "Island Sun," Mosaic's tunes are more fit for a sunset rager on a sweaty beach. "The Night Is Young" starts with a chilled-out groove courtesy of guitarist Tim Mahoney, bassist P-Nut, and drummer Chad Sexton, before doubling-down with a crunchy blast that kicks sand into the face of anyone who thought 311 were getting soft in their forties. "One in the Same" and "Hey Yo" are absolute assaults that also prove this point nicely.

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/king-gizzard-the-lizard-wizard-murder-of-the-universe-_Weo7b.jpg?v=1758927936
iron-maiden-rock-in-rio-2
ROCK IN RIO
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files as well as the live video for "Brave New World" and the mini documentary "A Day In The Life."
Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers (guitar); Steve Harris (bass); Nicko McBrain (drums).
Additional personnel: Michael Kenney (keyboards).
Recorded live at the Rock In Rio Festival, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, January 19, 2001.
ROCK IN RIO finds Iron Maiden playing the 2001 edition of the Brazilian rock festival that's hosted the band since the early '80s. That notion applies to Jeff Tweedy's first proper solo album, 2017's Together at Last, though in a rather unexpected way. For Together at Last, Tweedy literally opts not to have a band with him for a change -- this is a set of 11 tunes from his back catalog, recorded solo, with Tweedy's voice, acoustic guitar, and harmonica only occasionally reinforced with some very subtle guitar overdubs. If you've always wanted to hear Jeff Tweedy play a solo set in a whisper-quiet folk club, where his vocals don't have to compete with drums or amplifiers, then Together at Last is the absolutely next best thing. On one hand, the album invites the question of just why Tweedy opted to re-record a handful of his old tunes without his partners from Wilco or Loose Fur, and the lack of any new material makes this play like a live album with the audience conspicuous in its absence. On the other, if you don't mind the fact that these are all songs the average fan of Tweedy's work already knows rather well, you're rewarded with a set of simple but lovely performances. Jeff Tweedy may not be a virtuoso as a vocalist or a guitarist, but he absolutely knows what makes his songs work, and the intimacy of these recordings allows him to explore the nooks and crannies of the songs without having to make room for anyone else, and the results are charming, emotionally effective, and sometimes quite moving. And he's smart enough to chose a set of songs that work well stripped to their framework, and if this set is by no means "Jeff Tweedy's Greatest Hits," it does wonders to show off his estimable skills as a lyricist and spinner of melodies. If Together at Last is a minor work in Tweedy's catalog, it's a simple but genuine pleasure that may convert a few doubters who haven't been won over by Wilco's eclecticism. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017

ROULETTE SIDES is a Records & LPs from Morgan Lee

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/23/2017
