Tenor-saxophonist Dave Van Kreidt, a former member of Dave Brubeck's octet in the late '40s, had a reunion with the pianist, altoist Paul Desmond and bassist Bob Bates for this unusual session; Brubeck's new drummer Joe Morello made the group a quintet. Van Kreidt supplied all of the compositions (some of which are fairly complex), giving this set a sound very much different than the usual Brubeck Quartet outing. Recorded at Greene Street Recording, New York, New York in July and August 1988. Originally released as a 2-LP set on Enigma (5403). Includes liner notes by Jutta Koether. Sonic Youth made a major step forward with 1987's Sister, their first album where the songs were as strong as the group's visionary approach and they rocked with the force and authority they'd clearly sought since the beginning. If 1988's Daydream Nation didn't make as decisive a leap in terms of theory or style, as far as execution was concerned, it was Sonic Youth's first unqualified masterpiece, a triumph that made them one of the most respected bands in indie rock. Initially released as a two-LP set, the sheer scope of Daydream Nation was ambitious, but the longer tracks worked to Sonic Youth's advantage, allowing them the space to lay down solid melodic structures and then use them as a framework for extended jams (thankfully, the band made splendid use of their wanderlust without wearing out their welcome). Sonic Youth were playing at the top of their game on the Daydream Nation sessions; the guitar interplay between Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo was stronger and more intuitive than before, and bassist Kim Gordon and drummer Steve Shelley had grown into a powerful rhythm section that cut an impressive groove, giving the band a greater freedom to explore the space around them without getting lost. Sonic Youth were not simply tighter on Daydream Nation, they were making better and more satisfying use of their arsenal of alternate tunings and bent but elemental song structures, and the final product fused their love of creatively applied noise and the sound of the electric guitar with song structures that merged elements of punk, prog, boogie, and psychedelia. The journey from the trippy joy of "Teenage Riot" to the hot-rodded choogle of "Eliminator Jr." was a bracing, glorious experience, and Daydream Nation confirmed their status as one of America's best and most original alternative rock bands, and one that had a shot at a future outside the underground -- a pleasant surprise given the alienating air of their earliest work. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

Best Sellers: Top Seller

Lyricist: Mastodon.
Personnel: Brent Hinds (vocals, guitar); Br?nn Dailor (vocals, drums); Troy Sanders (vocals); Bill Kelliher (guitar).
Audio Mixer: Nick Raskulinecz.
Recording information: Aboce The Sunset Bar, Martigny, Switzerland; Rock Falcon Studio, Franklin, TN; The Projector Room, Decatur, GA.
Illustrators: Donny Phillips; Skinner .
Given the title of its sixth release, it's fair to wonder if Mastodon is hinting at 2011's The Hunter or its back catalog. Many of the tracks on Once More 'Round the Sun dig into the band's seemingly inexhaustible bag of monstrous riffs and wonderfully fractured motifs. That said, as a collective, they unapologetically explore the more polished and accessible songwriting and performing craft found on The Hunter. This set marks a fork in the road where Mastodon evolves once more, to cross over from metal's angular, sludgy power to adrenaline-fueled, hook-laden, hard rock. The album was produced by Nick Raskulinecz, best known for his work with Foo Fighters and Rush. The sound Mastodon pursues here draws inspiration from the '70s, without remotely being an exercise in nostalgia. There is one notable exception; it's deliberate and obvious: "The High Road" boasts unapolgeting Thin Lizzy worship, albeit ambitiously updated. (Who better?) Its verse/riff structure weds Lynott's rhythmic sensibility to Mastodon's dynamic aggression. The anthemic chorus melody and harmonies, and twinned lead guitar roar, were trademarked by Lizzy's Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham long ago. "Chimes at Midnight" is intense, fueled by a mammoth chugging riff. It lets the "drop D" freak flag fly, with a near-shouted vocal, harmonic chorus, and spacey six-string interludes. "The Motherload," with its swaggering guitar heroics, is a wound-out yet nearly hummable prog melody, with a relentless bass and snare attack. "Aunt Lisa," with its knotty guitar intro, contains processed vocals, a series of rising and falling key changes, and the Coathangers guesting -- cheerleader style -- in a chanted vocal chorus ? la Faith No More's "Be Aggressive!" There are also some substantive guitar pyrotechnics in the extended solos in "Halloween" and "Ember City," which, due to their imagination and focus, add dimension to them as songs. "Diamond in the Witch House" is a sprawling, nearly eight-minute closing jam. Neurosis' Scott Kelly and his menacing growl guest as it lumbers, trudges, and lurches ever forward (longtime fans will likely dig this). Once More 'Round the Sun furthers what Mastodon began on The Hunter: expanding their music past metal's rigid borders -- even with its many subgenres -- toward an integrative hard rock that doesn't leave metal out. The songwriting, playing, and production here are inspired, kinetic, and far more accessible than ever before. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 06/24/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Mastodon-Once-More-Round-the-Sun-Explicit-Content_5NSVZ.jpg?v=1740707015
gram-parsons-grievous-angel-180-gram-vinyl
Grievous Angel (180 Gram Vinyl)

Gram Parsons fondness for drugs and high living are said to have been catching up with him while he was recording Grievous Angel, and sadly he wouldn't live long enough to see it reach record stores, dying from a drug overdose in the fall of 1973. This album is a less ambitious and unified set than his solo debut, but that's to say that G.P. was a great album while Grievous Angel was instead a very, very good one. Much of the same band that played on his solo debut were brought back for this set, and they perform with the same effortless grace and authority (especially guitarist James Burton and fiddler Byron Berline). If Parsons was slowing down a bit as a songwriter, he still had plenty of gems on hand from more productive days, such as "Brass Buttons" and "Hickory Wind (which wasn't really recorded live in Northern Quebec; that's just Gram and the band ripping it up live in the studio, with a handful of friends whooping it up to create honky-tonk atmosphere). He also proved to be a shrewd judge of other folks material as always; Tom T. Hall's "I Can't Dance" is a strong barroom rocker, and everyone seems to be having a great time on The Louvin Brothers's "Cash on the Barrelhead." As a vocal duo, Parsons and Emmylou Harris only improved on this set, turning in a version of "Love Hurts" so quietly impassioned and delicately beautiful that it's enough to make you forget Roy Orbison ever recorded it. And while he didn't plan on it, Parsons could hardly have picked a better closing gesture than "In My Hour of Darkness." Grievous Angel may not have been the finest work of his career, but one would be hard pressed to name an artist who made an album this strong only a few weeks before their death -- or at any time of their life, for that matter. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Gram-Parsons--Grievous-Angel-180-Gram-Vinyl_f8yKc.jpg?v=1740713896
gram-parsons-gp-180-gram-vinyl
GP (180 Gram Vinyl)

Given Gram Parsons' habit of taking control of the bands he played with (and his disinclination towards staying with them for very long), it was inevitable that he would eventually strike out on his own, and his first solo album, 1973's G.P., is probably the best realized expression of his musical personality. Working with a crack band of L.A. and Nashville's finest (including James Burton on guitar, Ronnie Tutt on drums, Byron Berline on fiddle, and Glen D. Hardin on piano), he drew from them a sound that merged breezy confidence with deeply felt Southern soul, and he in turn pulled off some of his most subtle and finely detailed vocal performances; "She" and "A Song for You," in particular, are masterful examples of passion finding balance with understatement. Parsons also discovered that rare artist with whom he can be said to have genuinely collaborated (rather than played beside), Emmylou Harris; Gram and Harris' spot-on harmonies and exchanged verses on "We'll Sweep out the Ashes in the Morning" and "That's All It Took" are achingly beautiful and instantly established her as one country music's most gifted vocalists. On G.P., Parsons' ambitious vision encompassed hard-country weepers, wistful ballads, uptempo dance tunes, and even horn-driven rhythm and blues. He managed to make them all work, both as individual tunes and as a unified whole. If it falls just short of being his greatest work (an honor that goes to the Flying Burrito Brothers' The Gilded Palace of Sin) thanks to a couple songs that are a bit too oblique for their own good ("The New Soft Shoe" may be beautiful, but who knows just what it's supposed to be about), this album remains a haunting reminder of Parsons' talent and influence, and has only gotten better with the passing years. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Gram-Parsons-GP-180-Gram-Vinyl_FSNeO.jpg?v=1740713987
lucinda-williams-car-wheels-on-a-gravel-road-import-180-gram-vinyl
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road [Import] (180 Gram Vinyl)

SIDE A
1. Both of those styles were part of his persona, though it's the more somber acoustic folk-blues that stand out more. It's a reasonably strong album, not too much different from much of the rest of his catalog, other than in the balanced mixture between jazz and folk approaches. Of the trad jazz cuts, the item that might attract the most collector interest is the jaunty "All Over You," which is certainly one of the most obscure (and atypical) early Bob Dylan covers; Dylan would never release his own version, though a demo he did of the tune in 1963 has appeared on bootlegs. It's not much of a song, but its basic joie de vivre fits in well with the jazz segment of this program, on which Van Ronk's gravelly vocals credibly echo (especially for a white singer) the spirit of early New Orleans jazz vocalists like Louis Armstrong. The amazing thing about the Blue Note era is that it produced recordings like CORNBREAD as a matter of course. But the width of the trio's scope is best exemplified by the polar contributions of the album's guests. Using almost no exterior samples, Stevens crafts an electronic, all-"instrumental" song cycle based on the symbols of the Chinese zodiac. While working within these considerably narrower confines, he still maps out a wide musical territory by using each symbol as a mode, each one exploring different textures and tempos and, in the process, evoking a surprising array of moods. At times eerie and ominous like a backwoods Autechre, other times sounding like more club-oriented fare, Stevens sometimes trades in bloops and bleeps for oblique glitches and crackles, but the underlying guiding principle is wide-eyed exploration that fills nearly every track with a sense of playfulness. Enjoy Your Rabbit never gets too serious, although at times it's very intense. Many tracks even have some sort of musical pun working just under the surface; for instance, "Year of the Horse" is by far the longest, clocking in at over 13 minutes, and "Year of the Ox" has a regular, heavy thudding beat. ~ Jason Nickey

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/sufjan-stevens-enjoy-your-rabbit_NJPgg.jpg?v=1759361997
phish-fuego
FUEGO
The studio album has always been a slippery prospect for any jam band worth taking seriously. Even the earliest champions of live exploration (Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, etc.) turned in their share of notoriously spotty or confusing studio recordings, much preferring the stage as a place for their craft to really take form. Long-running jam-band institution Phish follow this to a T, releasing scads of live recordings that tend to find superior readings of tunes that come off stuffy or lifeless in their studio versions. Releasing new studio material seems to be a low priority for the band, with 12th studio album Fuego being released five years after 2009's Joy, which itself came after 2004's Undermind. The hallucinatory whimsy and unbridled exuberance Phish exude on-stage has been hard to capture in the confines of the studio, but the excellent and smartly crafted Fuego steps outside of this pattern in a few ways. The logical thing to do when recording a band championed for their excellence in a live setting would be to record them as close to live in the studio as possible, as was the process with the unremarkable Joy. Studio legend Bob Ezrin seems to rethink that approach here, with production that highlights individual elements that make a fantastic whole, rather than the collective energy that so often turns to murky confusion on tape. Instead of an overblown studio creation, Fuego instead finds the band sounding relaxed and connected, but also distinctly articulate in their often complex twists and turns. More than the smart production, Fuego is a standout in Phish's sometimes less-than-impressive studio catalog on the strengths of its ten stellar tracks, inspired tunes that share a loose thread as they bound between virtuosic playing, flirtations with gospel and funk, and the kind of eclectic rock jamming Phish have made their name on. The album opens with its epic titular track, a flashy, caffeinated jam that spins on for almost ten minutes before second track, "The Line," simmers things down with its quirky grooves and a pop-friendly chorus that make the song one of the album's catchiest moments. Fans of the band's goofier side will delight in "Wombat," a dorky funk workout that recalls their early romps with nonsensical lyrical themes and lighthearted genre experimentation. Horns, synthesizers, background singers, and other various sprinklings of production pop up throughout the album, keeping the already sharp tunes sonically interesting on top of solid interplay between the core bandmembers. With sharp production and some of the better compositions Phish have managed in ages, Fuego ranks among their best studio albums, capturing strands of the frenetic, cartoonish, darkly cautionary, and open-hearted expressions that make their concerts such moving experiences, but which often get lost when the tape starts rolling. ~ Fred Thomas

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/24/2014

TracksCredits
- Disc 1 -
1 A Message to You Rudy
2 Do the Dog
3 It's Up to You
4 Nite Klub
5 Doesn't Make It Alright
6 Concrete Jungle
7 Too Hot
- Disc 2 -
1 Monkey Man
2 (Dawning of a) New Era
3 Blank Expression
4 Stupid Marriage
5 Too Much Too Young
6 Little Bitch
7 You're Wondering Now

Genre: Punk

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

Soul Revolution - Pt 2 is a Records & LPs from Bob Marley

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/bob-marley-soul-revolution-pt-2_YTvfo_ef913bdf-9214-49d3-8419-5d8bb6a2eea3.jpg?v=1758737314
modern-baseball-sports
SPORTS
Audio Mixer: Ralph Nicastro.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/24/2014

Live is a Music CDs from KING,ALBERT

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 06/24/2014

YO!

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/mastodon-once-more-round-the-sun_tOcTO.jpg?v=1740706422
sun-ra-my-way-is-the-spaceways
MY WAY IS THE SPACEWAYS

MY WAY IS THE SPACEWAYS is a Records & LPs from Sun Ra

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/sun-ra-my-way-is-the-spaceways_pNf9S.jpg?v=1759091047
mf-doom-special-herbs-5-6
SPECIAL HERBS 5 & 6

Tracks 1 Pennyroyal 2 Lavenar Buds 3 White Willow Bark 4 Bergamot Wild 5 Orange Blossoms 6 Coffin Nails 7 Kava Kava Root 8 Valarian Root 9 Jasmine Blossoms 10 Black Snake Root 11 Horehound 12 Dragon's Blood 13 Myrtle Leaf 14 Patchouly Leaves 15 Constipated Monkey 16 Contact Blitt

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 06/24/2014

This is also available on CD on Captain Trip (36).
Amon D??l ll's extraordinary 1973 album finds the influential German art rock band working surprisingly well in a short song format while still stamping the music with their unique sound. "Fly United," "Trap," and "Ladies Mimikry" show diverse styles of pop and rock running happily into each other with memorably quirky results.
