Cursed by their own precociousness, musical malleability and, most problematic, their earnest ambition and self-confidence, the quartet has quite simply been blacklisted by a considerable swathe of listeners, led by self-appointed officers of the heavy metal poseur police, and helped none by their contract with leading heavy metal label Roadrunner, whose very success can ironically become an albatross around its bands' necks. As a result, Trivium have been dodging verbal barbs and metaphoric flying tomatoes ever since the modern melodic thrash of sophomore album Ascendancy (their first for Roadrunner, coincidentally), landed them on magazine covers and on stages with Metallica, who they proceeded to inadvisably clone on hit-and-miss third opus, The Crusade, before delivering a more brutal and technical sound on fourth album Shogun. But, since the latter still smacked unfairly against the immovable wall of the aforementioned prejudices, the group -- now armed with new drummer Nick Augusto -- obviously saw no other recourse than to revisit the less overwrought style of Ascendancy on its fifth studio album, 2011's In Waves. In doing so, Trivium prove that template to be their honest-to-goodness comfort zone, as song after song whips by, wedding equal doses of neo-thrash aggression and accessibility, represented by frontman Matt Heafy's alternating clean and gruff vocals as well as his and fellow guitarist Corey Beaulieu's jagged staccato riffs and tight-knit harmonies. Yes, results may vary from song to song, depending on the listener's tastes, but not Trivium's commitment to crafting fully realized, self-sufficient tracks under the stewardship of producer Colin Richardson (who stepped in for the less versatile Jason Suecof) and veteran Roadrunner A&R man Monte Conner (the man responsible for signing Sepultura, Cynic, and many more). But, naturally, despite all these merits (and, sure, imperfections, too), Trivium will probably be vilified once again for taking the same sort of creative backward step that the fans typically clamor for from Metallica, Slayer, and other bands on down; it's the essence of the Florida band's "can't win" lot in life, but there's always hope that this will change, in time. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 08/09/2011

Recording information: Patchwerk Studios, Atlanta, GA.
Photographers: Jonathan Mannion; Russell Dreyer.
A collaborative effort from Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame, Ferrari Boyz is considered a "street album," meaning it's somewhere between a raw mixtape and a polished official release. I in 2009, Donald Lawrence & Co. eschew a Pt. II for the moment in favor of 2011's equally conceptual choral gospel collection YRM (Your Righteous Mind). Lawrence, serving as usual as a combination singer, preacher, and master of ceremonies, has some involved ideas to get across, an early one being "You're not a natural being having a spiritual experience, but you're a spiritual being having a natural experience," a statement he makes initially in the lead-off title song and elaborates on during the next track, "Spiritual." That song has a slow soul-funk groove reminiscent of Sly & the Family Stone, and elsewhere, Lawrence makes his musical influences clear, beginning with a cover of Walter Hawkins' "When the Battle Is Over" by declaring, "We gonna take you back to the '80s," and remaining in that decade for a cover of Chaka Khan's 1985 hit "Through the Fire," sung by Tobbi White-Darks and Tommi White. In context, the secular lyric can be taken as directed to God instead of a lover, much like many CCM lyrics that sound like love songs. Most of the time, Lawrence has weightier matters on his mind, however, as he takes on the notion of religious belief as transcending mere human logic in "Not Making Sense, Making Faith." But however theological the underpinning may be, Lawrence and his singers and choir never forget to be entertaining and uplifting. Throughout the '80s, Spanglish rappers like Kid Frost and (Sen-Dog's older brother) Mellow Man Ace saw some commercial success. But it wasn't until 1991 that a crew brought the Spanish language and sensibility into a hip-hop context at the level where it not only reached mainstream audiences, but also transcended ethnic lines within the inner city. Cypress Hill is that crew.
Their production style (crafted by DJ Muggs, a transplant to LA from the east coast), takes lessons from Prince Paul and the Bomb Squad, but tempered with a distinctly west coast feel reminiscent of the Los Angelino funk of War and Carlos Santana. Marshall proved herself a unique interpreter on THE COVERS ALBUM, deftly folding a diverse set of songs into her own dark, dreamy sonic world. She expertly stays the course on JUKEBOX, sublimating the masculine bravado of songs by these artists into her own muscular yet decidedly feminine musical template. JUKEBOX contains only one new Cat Power composition ("Song to Bobby"), but the many facets of Marshall are on full display here. From that Rolls Royce parked outside the Detroit Savings Bank to the numerous references about being ignored by the industry, Success Is Certain seems another near-concept album from the artist who has complained about this for years, but this time the attitude is a streetwise spin on the Law of Attraction, as if Royce could thug-charm money into jumping in his pocket. Musically, the results are a brighter, tighter, yet more elaborate version of the man's best work, with tracks like "Security" and "Merry Go Round" sounding both flashy and meaty at once. Brand-new flavors come when "My Own Planet" apes the early Prince style of funk, while the mystical, stately monster the Alchemist lays under "I Ain't Coming Down" is entirely unique, as are the handful of Mr. Porter-helmed cuts that dot the record. Joe Budden (fellow Slaughterhouse crew member) and Eminem (new label boss/recently reunited partner in crime) both help Royce celebrate his recent upturn in attitude, and with little influence from outside the inner circle, Success Is Certain plays out like a fan-aimed album designed to bridge the man's dark past with his bright future, or a right-sized (11 tracks) Shady soundtrack for the supposed "Detroit Renaissance" of 2011. ~ David Jeffries

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 08/09/2011

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/royce-da-59-success-is-certain-explicit-content_vP49n.jpg?v=1741089667
