Recorded live at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York on November 18, 1993. UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK is part of MTV's "Unplugged" series. UNPLUGGED IN NEW YORK won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Sadly, MTV Unplugged stands as Nirvana's last album. While it's an album of covers and old songs, it ranks as one of the band's most cohesive records. Instead of relying on the trio's overpowering sonic force, Unplugged concentrates on Kurt Cobain's subtly shaded songwriting and Nirvana's deceptively simple musical power. Every version of their previously recorded songs, with the possible exception of "On a Plain," dramatically improves the original, and the covers reveal more about Cobain than he intended. By the time Nirvana close with a wrenching, spine-chilling version of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night," the emotional complexity of Nirvana's music is clear. It's also clear that they could have made even greater music. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/03/2013

Best Sellers: Top50

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Nirvana-Unplugged-In-New-York-180-Gram-Vinyl_2zcks.jpg?v=1740676697
lin-rountree-serendipitous
SERENDIPITOUS
Personnel: Lin Rountree (trumpet).

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 09/03/2013

The album that reinvented East Coast rap for the gangsta age, Ready to Die made the Notorious B.I.G. a star, and vaulted Sean "Puffy" Combs' Bad Boy label into the spotlight as well. Today it's recognized as one of the greatest hardcore rap albums ever recorded, and that's mostly due to Biggie's skill as a storyteller. His raps are easy to understand, but his skills are hardly lacking -- he has a loose, easy flow and a talent for piling multiple rhymes on top of one another in quick succession. He's blessed with a flair for the dramatic, and slips in and out of different contradictory characters with ease. Yet, no matter how much he heightens things for effect, it's always easy to see elements of Biggie in his narrators and of his own experience in the details; everything is firmly rooted in reality, but plays like scenes from a movie. A sense of doom pervades his most involved stories: fierce bandits ("Gimme the Loot"), a hustler's beloved girlfriend ("Me & My Bitch"), and robbers out for Biggie's newfound riches ("Warning") all die in hails of gunfire. The album is also sprinkled with reflections on the soul-draining bleakness of the streets -- "Things Done Changed," "Ready to Die," and "Everyday Struggle" are powerfully affecting in their confusion and despair. Not everything is so dark, though; Combs' production collaborations result in some upbeat, commercial moments, and typically cop from recognizable hits: the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back" on the graphic sex rap "One More Chance," Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" on the rags-to-riches chronicle "Juicy," and the Isley Brothers' "Between the Sheets" on the overweight-lover anthem "Big Poppa." Producer Easy Mo Bee's deliberate beats do get a little samey, but it hardly matters: this is Biggie's show, and by the time "Suicidal Thoughts" closes the album on a heartbreaking note, it's clear why he was so revered even prior to his death. She not only sang, she wrote songs, good ones, and she was an accomplished dancer, played piano and guitar, and she could belt songs out from the R&B songbook with a lusty, sexual rockabilly growl, then turn smooth and velvety as a jazz singer when she got her hands on a good ballad. She was a minor star in the late '50s and early '60s, but she should have been a bigger one, and even now, in the archival wing of the 21st century, she deserves to be much better known. This set hardly has all her hits; in fact, it only has one, her answer song to Claude King's 1962 country hit "Wolverton Mountain" called "(I'm the Girl From) Wolverton Mountain," which was a hit as well that same year, and led many to assume Campbell was a country singer, which she decidedly wasn't. Campbell had just signed with Cameo Records, and the label, eager to capitalize on the success of the single, rushed her into the studio with a crack New York session band and had her burn through covers of various hits of the day, then tossed it all together with the "Wolverton" single and two later singles from that year, "Mr. Fix-It Man" and "Mother, Please!," to make an album titled All the Hits, which hit the racks before Christmas in 1962. This set includes that album with seven additional tracks from the New York session added at the end. So, it's hardly all of Campbell's hits, or even anything close to it, but it is still an interesting collection, mainly because it allows Campbell to stretch out and do many kinds of songs and styles, from country to pop and pop-country to late-night jazz, jump blues, and R&B, with just a touch of nascent rock & roll. Given her wide-ranging talents, if she were to be active in the 21st century at her prime, Campbell would undoubtedly be a multimedia superstar, a powerful, passionate singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and dancer with the good looks and talent to stick in anyone's memory. ~ Steve Leggett

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/03/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/jo-ann-campbell-all-the-hits-her-complete-cameo-recordings_HeZLF.jpg?v=1759198448
bastille-bad-blood-lp
Bad Blood [LP]
Vinyl LP pressing. 2013 debut album from this UK quartet. Its members -- most of whom live on or near the Gulf Coast of Alabama (only Kimbrough lives in Nashville, but is an Alabama native) -- came together while performing a songwriter's round at the Frog Pond gathering on Blue Moon Farm in Silverhill, Alabama. All five have deep attachments to organic music traditions of the Deep South in general, and the Gulf Coast in particular. They enlisted Grammy-winning producer / engineer (and Capps' longtime partner) Trina Shoemaker, who also mixed the ten-song set. The album was cut in a single eight-hour session on the front porch of Sugarcane Jane's house. Acoustic and electric guitars, mandolins, banjos, lap steel, hand percussion, kick drum, and whatever else was available were used in the moment -- though minimal overdubs were added later. Country, bluegrass, blues, roots rock, gospel, and folk come together in this Southern Americana stew that reflects the rich musical culture of the Gulf Coast. Capps' opener, "Willie Sugarcapps," is a minor key, banjo and guitar, bass and drum-fueled blues, dressed out by staggered country-gospel harmonies. The protagonist of his "Magdalena"' admits his wrongs for the sole purpose of learning to do right by his beloved. Kimbrough's "Oh Colorado" places Lee's alto way up front; her delivery drips with longing for a return to a place whose meaning is held deep in the memory of her heart. She is accompanied by a bass drum, strummed 12-string, and lap steel. Crawford's jaunty, cut-time "Energy," with its banjo and fat acoustic Kala U bass, is accompanied by ringing mandolins and urgent acoustic guitars; its lyric is almost transcendentally elevated by four-part vocal harmonies. Capps' "Poison" is a reworked reprise from his catalog; a funky, Gulf Coast shuffle that wryly yet poignantly discusses the toll of the BP Oil disaster in the region. The homey, raw grit of the instrumentation stands in sharp contrast to the seamless integration of multi-part harmony. Kimbrough's "Trouble" weds high lonesome, bluegrass-gospel harmonies, mandolins, and his grainy baritone in the intro, before transforming the tune into a choogling blues without losing any of its otherworldly impact. Lots of records get made in a single day, but few possess the quality songwriting and inspired performances this one does. Fewer still so authentically evoke the sense of the region, topography, history, and people of a particular place. Willie Sugarcapps does all this. It is raw and immediate, yet warm, full, and inviting, all while seeming effortlessly rendered. This is the very definition of Americana. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Country

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/03/2013

This remastered edition of OUT MY WAY is an Enhanced CD featuring 7 bonus tracks along with a video of the band playing Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing."
Meat Puppets: Curt Kirkwood (vocals, guitar, percussion); Cris Kirkwood (vocals, bass, percussion); Derrick Bostrom (drums).
Reissue Producers: Derrick Bostrom, Tami Blevins, Ian Gilchrist, Troy Hansbrough.
Engineers include: Steve Escallier, Jeff Weatherby, Darrel DeMarco.
Recorded from Summer 1982 through Summer 1986. David Fincher drafted him to score The Social Network in 2010 -- Trent received an Academy Award for his trouble -- and that same year he formed How to Destroy Angels with longtime collaborator Atticus Ross and Mariqueen Maandig. Echoes of these two projects can be heard within the disciplined, detailed Hesitation Marks but much of the album's measured mood derives from the great settling within Reznor's personal life. He married Maandig in 2009 and subsequently had two children, so he's a decidedly different musician in 2013 than he was in 1993: he's not the tortured, angry young rebel struggling with addictions and angst, he's a sober family man. Sobriety centered Reznor and working in other capacities reinvigorated him, leading to the masterful Hesitation Marks, where he cannily evokes the past within the cloak of the future while focusing on the present. Certainly, Hesitation Marks brings to mind some of the earliest Nine Inch Nails records, particularly in how it's built upon actual danceable rhythms, but the sonic palette is brighter and broader than either Pretty Hate Machine or The Downward Spiral, feeling expansive even when it's punctuated with jarring, jagged bursts of electric noise and bursts of clustered beats. Reznor enlisted a bunch of art rock vets to help achieve this coiled, cloistered sound -- King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew and bassist Pino Palladino play often, Lindsey Buckingham throws in some guitar; on the deluxe edition, Todd Rundgren Utopia-fies "All Time Low" with layers of harmonies -- and the additional musicians help keep the album open. Even if "Everything" -- a surprising power pop rush that's easily the most exuberant Nine Inch Nails has ever sounded -- was excised, Hesitation Marks would qualify as the most hopeful NIN album ever. Pain still punctuates the lyrics, Reznor still slides into moody black pools of sound, but there is no wallowing here, no fetishization of darkness. There is shade and light within Reznor's immaculate constructions, there is the ebb and flow of life, there is joy within the sheer sheets of sound. Hesitation Marks makes it quite clear that Trent Reznor is no longer an angry young man but rather a restless, inventive artist who is at peace with himself, and the result is a record that provides real, lasting nourishment. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/03/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/nine-inch-nails-hesitation-marks_HlpJB.jpg?v=1758793290
caged-animals-in-the-land-of-giants
IN THE LAND OF GIANTS

Brand New Sealed | Caged Animals | In The Land Of Giants | Vinyl | Release Date: 09/03/2013

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/03/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/caged-animals-in-the-land-of-giants_34eQs.jpg?v=1758893327
neko-case-the-worse-things-get-the-harder-i-fight-the-harder-i-fight-the-more-i-love-you-deluxe-version
The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You (Deluxe Version)

Brand New Sealed | Neko Case | The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You | Vinyl | Release Date: 09/03/2013

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/03/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/neko-case-the-worse-things-get-the-harder-i-fight-the-harder-i-fight-the-more-i-love-you-deluxe-version_lZ8SE.jpg?v=1758783638
