Frank Baum's series of early 20th century novels about the fairyland Oz have inspired a number of theatrical and cinematic adaptations, beginning with a Broadway musical version of The Wizard of Oz for which Baum himself provided the libretto and lyrics that opened in 1903, only three years after the first publication of the initial book, and including the 1975 all-black Broadway musical The Wiz. In an era rife with sequels and "prequels" to successful properties that has reached back retroactively to include authorized and unauthorized re-imaginings of works such as Gone with the Wind, Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West purported to depict the back story of the villainess of The Wizard of Oz and her counterpart, Glinda the Good. Of course, Maguire's retelling was a revisionist interpretation in which the Wicked Witch turned out to be a misunderstood character with lots of justifications for turning "bad" (one of them being prejudiced reactions to her green skin color), while Glinda was made into more of a goody-goody than actually good, not to mention being something of a dumb-blonde cheerleader type. Theatrical composer Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin) saw the obvious stage possibilities, and his musical version, Wicked, opened on Broadway on October 30, 2003. In the adaptation, Glinda's role has been beefed up, the better to employ the talents of Tony-winning Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth, though the story still primarily concerns the young Wicked Witch (Idina Menzel), with Broadway veteran Joel Grey as the Wizard, and the story line has been softened, the better to attract a young audience conditioned by the Disney hits Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King. On disc, the score will have a familiar sound to anyone who knows previous Schwartz efforts and their combination of traditional show music with '70s-style soft rock music and choral music. Soprano Chenoweth and alto Menzel are given very different kinds of songs to sing; Chenoweth gets the Broadway belting material, Menzel the more adult contemporary-type ballads. This is appropriate to the their characters. Glinda is superficial and showy, Elphaba (the Witch) so earnest that she is eventually embittered. The score is tuneful and the lyrics often witty. This is not great music, but it is craftsmanlike and certainly efficient for this somewhat questionable project. ~ William Ruhlmann

Genre: Showtunes / B'Way

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/various-artists-wicked-original-cast-recording-2-lps_sKUY5.jpg?v=1744723909
nick-cave-the-bad-seeds-skeleton-tree-digital-download-card
Skeleton Tree (Digital Download Card)
Nick Cave is an artist who has never shied away from exploring the darker side of the human experience, often in broadly gothic strokes on his early albums but with a growing degree of nuance and compassion as Cave and his work matured. But a very real and deeply painful tragedy was visited on Cave while he was working on his 16th solo album, Skeleton Tree. His 15-year-old son Arthur Cave died when he fell from a cliff in July 2015, and while the writing and recording was already underway when the youngster suffered his accident, the grief and pain of loss Cave felt is palpable throughout this album. Skeleton Tree is relatively modest in scale -- it runs just 40 minutes, the cover artwork is minimal, and the music lacks the dramatic, grand-scale arrangements of Cave's albums of the 21st century. Nearly all of these songs feature spare, minimal melodies and low-key soundscapes that hover over beds of atonal electronic noise and sculpted static. And while the estimable talents of the Bad Seeds are on display here, on many tracks the final effect feels more like an author reading over ambient backing tracks than the sort of evocative sounds one might expect from Cave and his collaborators. The lyrics appear to reference Cave's personal loss on occasion -- the very first words in the opening track, "Jesus Alone," are "You fell from the sky/Crash landed in a field," which could hardly be a mere coincidence -- yet Skeleton Tree doesn't feel like an album about the late Arthur Cave. Instead, Skeleton Tree plays like an act of mourning, a set of songs in which Cave makes his acquaintance with grief and struggles to make sense of the pain and emotional devastation that come with outliving your child. As always, Cave's songs are both literate and emotionally honest, and though this music is genuinely passionate, he avoids histrionics. Skeleton Tree isn't about exorcizing the agony of being robbed of a loved one. Instead, this music honors the dead by making sense of the pain of the survivors, and the harrowing and beautiful "Distant Sky" (a duet with Else Torp) finds a point where these two sides meet and find peace. Even by Cave's dour standards, Skeleton Tree is a tough listen, but it's also a powerful and revealing one, and a singular work from a one-of-a-kind artist. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Nick-Cave-the-Bad-Seeds--Skeleton-Tree-Digital-Download-Card_IWfmz.jpg?v=1741083629
ar-rahman-pele-birth-of-a-legend-o-s-t
PELE: BIRTH OF A LEGEND / O.S.T.

PELE: BIRTH OF A LEGEND / O.S.T. is a Records & LPs from Ar Rahman

Genre: Soundtracks

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/ar-rahman-pele-birth-of-a-legend-ost_Cexnp.jpg?v=1759045398
ramin-djawadi-composer-warcraft-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-blue-red-vinyl
Warcraft [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] [Blue, Red Vinyl]

Warcraft [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] [Blue, Red Vinyl] is a Records & LPs from Ramin Djawadi (composer)

Genre: Soundtracks

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/ramin-djawadi-composer-warcraft-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-blue-red-vinyl_7zjlY.jpg?v=1759127060
faith-no-more-king-for-a-day-fool-for-a-lifetime-2016-remaster
KING FOR A DAY: FOOL FOR A LIFETIME (2016 REMASTER
Faith No More: Mike Patton (vocals); Roddy Bottum (keyboards); Billy Gould (bass); Mike Bordin (drums).
Additional personnel: Trey Spruance (guitar).
Recorded at Bearsville Studios, Bearsville, New York.
Faith No More's fifth full-length effort, 1995's KING FOR A DAY/FOOL FOR A LIFETIME, was the band's most straightforward work to date. Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 is his first attempt at offering an alternative narrative of his own career, one that places his quieter side as the connecting thread running from the White Stripes through the Raconteurs to his solo work. It's a tactic that diminishes some of the conventional notions about White, particularly that most of his music is grounded in the blues. Despite Greil Marcus' mention of blues icon Son House in the liner notes, most of the music on Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 bears stronger ties to country and folk, even British Invasion pop; the latter is evident not only on the singsong whimsy of "We're Going to Be Friends" but the cinematic melancholy of "Forever for Her (Is Over for Me)." Neither version here is heard in an alternate version, underscoring how this spin on White's work isn't revisionist, it highlights what was already there, yet there are rarities scattered throughout the collection: remixes of the early Stripes tracks "Apple Blossom" and "I'm Bound to Pack It Up," alternate acoustic mixes of solo material from the 2010s, bluegrass versions of "Top Yourself" and "Carolina Drama," a song from the Raconteurs. What first grabs the attention are assorted White Stripes rarities -- the wry, funny Beck-produced B-side "Honey, We Can't Afford to Look This Cheap," the recently completed outtake "City Lights" -- and a stripped-down revision of "Love Is the Truth," a song White wrote for Coca-Cola in 2006, but what impresses is the consistency. Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 not only is a strong set of songs but it makes it plain that White has been mining the same territory, finding something new within it for nearly two decades. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/jack-white-acoustic-recordings-1998-2016-gatefold-lp-jacket-180-gram-vinyl-digital-download-card-2-lps_CZMhD.jpg?v=1742341326
sound-of-silver-europe-import-vinyl-lp
LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver [Vinyl LP – Europe Import]

Compared to the first LCD Soundsystem album, Sound of Silver is less silly, funnier, less messy, sleeker, less rowdy, more fun, less distanced, more touching. There are so many recordings, directions, and concepts, it's fruitless comparing one to another, and every new one seems to be a snapshot of where he's at during a particular period. Transcendence, a Devin Townsend Project release, is no exception.
His follow-up to 2014's Z? double-album (half of which was DTP's Sky Blue) finds the musical polymath and self-admitted control freak working in a new way: collaborating directly with the other Project musicians during the writing process. Musically, this offering follows the modern arena rock aspect of that predecessor. There is metal here (of the symphonic and power varieties), but it's woven into a fabric of prog folk, hard rock, and dreamy, catchy pop. The central unifying factor here is drama: It's pervasive. Evidence lies in the opener, a familiar-sounding but otherwise complete rework of "Truth" (the original appeared as the first track on 1998's Infinity). This version is an overture to what follows, with its power metal riff appended by a female vocal backing chorus that includes Anneke van Giersbergen, Katrina Natale, and Che Aimee Dorval, proggy staccato guitar, bass and keyboard vamps, and absolutely gigantic-sounding drums. Second track "Stormbending" opens the album wide with a majestic pace and a gorgeous melody as guitars and keyboards lay down cascading fills behind massively stacked chorale-styled vocals. "Secret Sciences" is the most angular jam here. The arpeggiated guitars and intricate layers of hooky melodies offer a perfect illustration of the Project band at its best. The set's longest cut, "Higher," is the album's centerpiece. Commencing with a fingerpicked acoustic guitar intro amid textured ambience and a lilting folk melody, it winds through a staggering number of dynamic and musical changes over nearly ten minutes. The drumming that introduces the title track paves the way for operatic chorus vocals and orchestral synths that mimic brass and reed sections, as basslines and guitars thrum and cut at the margins. The striking sound collage contrasted with the grandeur of the lyric melody in "From the Heart" could easily have been a single -- if singles were more than eight-minutes long. The Celtic overtones and singalong quality in layered harmonies are underscored by lilting, airy, country-esque guitar fills, shimmering keyboards, and shuffling drums. Transcendence is filled with interlocking, beautifully written, arranged, and executed songs. Production and recording are typically excellent. Townsend has set such an impossibly high standard and this is another excellent entry in a catalog brimming with them. That said, it extends the boundaries explored on Sky Blue, and delivers -- in full -- on the promise it presented. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Rock

Format: CD

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/devin-townsend-project-transcendence_qdCsP.jpg?v=1759186141
grouplove-big-mess
BIG MESS
Recording information: Avast Studio, Seattle; The Fortoon, Downtown, LA.
Photographer: James Marcus Haney.
On their buoyant, third full-length album, 2016's Big Mess, Los Angeles' Grouplove continue their transformation from a kinetic, hippie-dance pop outfit into a mature, if still playful, radio-ready act. The album follows the group's equally inspired 2013 effort Spreading Rumors, and showcases the talents of lead vocalist/guitarist Christian Zucconi, lead vocalist/keyboardist Hannah Hooper, drummer Ryan Rabin, guitarist Andrew Wessen, and bassist Daniel Gleason, who replaced Sean Gadd in 2014. Once again, Rabin (son of Yes' Trevor Rabin) takes the production helm. However, in the spirit of transformation, the group also brought on seasoned pro Phil Ek (Band of Horses, the Shins, Built to Spill), who produced a handful of tracks. The result is that while Big Mess retains all of the band's exuberant, over-the-top pop fun, it's a finely honed insanity that balances the indie sensibilities of MGMT with the kooky pop lyricism of Barenaked Ladies. Also adding to the album's emotional impact is the band's newfound maturity in light of several years of hard touring away from home and the birth of Zucconi and Hooper's first child. The couple's vocal symmetry has always been a huge part of what makes Grouplove's sound so engaging, and their growth, both personally and creatively, is evident throughout Big Mess. It's a theme they tackle straight-away on the soaring lead-off track "Welcome to Your Life," singing, "Been wondering, I take a chance/That chance is circumstance/'Cause nothing ever comes without a change." Elsewhere, cuts like the bombastic "Do You Love Someone," "Standing in the Sun," and the pulsing, electronic dance music-infused "Good Morning," find the band staking out the improbable, and improbably likeable, middle ground between Katy Perry and the Pixies. Similarly, tracks like the yearning "Heart of Mine" and romantic "Enlighten Me" bring to mind an engaging mix of the Flaming Lips and Fun.. Considering all his activity, there's reason to be a little skeptical about The MANuscript, an album recorded during six days -- a blip in time by the 2010s standard. Nonetheless, there's no evidence here that Hollister spread himself too thin, or even an impression that he rushed through his eight proper solo album. As with his best work, Hollister carries himself with easy-going, modest certitude. The songwriting and production crew, including Candice Nelson, Balewa Muhammad, and Walter Millsap III, is pretty much the same one that worked on Angie Stone's Dream, a set highlighted by a Stone-Hollister duet. There's a sequel here, "Receipts," that's just as relatable (to experienced adults) and a bit more humorous. Hollister is ideally matched with his supporting collaborators, with whom he made what he calls "a guide for men," though it does not come across as some grandly designed concept album. It's a simple, straightforward set that largely adheres to polished, soul-rooted R&B, with Hollister doling out advice and relating tales, inspired as ever by the likes of Sam Cooke and Bobby Womack, without pulpiting. "One Great Love" is a pleasant diversion into swishing, post-Prince synth soul, somewhat akin to a collaboration with peak-era Terius Nash in which there is no messing around. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/09/2016

Primal Scream: Bobby Gillespie, Denise Johnson (vocals); Robert Young, Andrew Innes (guitar); Martin Duffy (keyboards).
Additional personnel: George Clinton, Jackie Johnson, Susan Marshall (vocals); Charlie Jacobs (harmonica); Amp Fiddler, Jim Dickinson, Benmont Tench (keyboards); George Drakoulias (bass, drums); Henry Olsen, Marco Nelso (bass); Roger Hawkins, Tony Brock, Toby Tomanov (drums); Greg Morrow, David Minnick (percussion).
The Memphis Horns: Andrew Love (tenor saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet).
Recorded at Ardent Studio, Memphis, Tennessee and Ocean Way Studio, Hollywood, California.
Before transforming into druggy dance-groovers with 1990's awesome and influential acid-house single "Loaded," Primal Scream, led by vocalist/ex-Jesus and Mary Chain drummer Bobby Gillespie, started life as a crew of anorak-wearing guitar-popsters in the mid-'80s UK tradition of The Pastels or The Television Personalities. Things are looking up on their follow-up, Sunlit Youth. The band's typically detailed arrangements, often noted for their multi-part harmonies and Afro-pop rhythms, get a boost from electronics here that's apparent from track one, "Villainy." A slice of pure synth pop led by shimmering textures and mechanical drums, its vocal harmonies and wafting melody still mark it theirs, as do the song's evolving rhythms. A later entry, "Psycho Lovers," has a stronger guitar presence, but also more of that synth sound on a chorus ready for the arena, along with enthusiastic beats reinforced by claps. The slinkier "Coins" incorporates funk and R&B-styled vocals while remaining in the realm of danceable synth pop. Taking a different sort of excursion, the more yearning "Everything All at Once" has a piano intro, then horn voices, eventual strings, and drums that fade in on cue and continue to play with dynamics. Also more off-kilter is "Jellyfish," a living-room recording with a mix of irregular percussion, bell tones, harmonized vocals, and sound effects that include pouring cereal. The overall tone of the album, though, is poppy and bright. While in the process of embracing more electronics they lose a bit of their organic warmth, particularly compared to their debut, Local Natives hang on to a significant amount of their quirkiness and rhythmic flair. It's a trade-off that, in this case, should favor the concert venues without ruffling the feathers of those in it for a sweet refrain. ~ Marcy Donelson

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/local-natives-sunlit-youth-lp_Vt7UH.jpg?v=1759300635
grouplove-big-mess-1
BIG MESS
Which isn't to say that Grouplove don't sound like themselves here. The group's vocal harmonies have always been strong, and for this album, the band has punched them up and given them a bigger place in the arrangements, as Joyce has given them an exacting electronic shine. Not that there was any technical fault to be found with his impassioned performances on Half the City, but having been quite new to professional singing at the time it was recorded -- live in the studio, with the pressure on -- he soon learned to embrace concepts like balance and nuance. That, combined with songs that draw on more socially conscious inspirations, moves the band's sound from fiery ballads of the '60s toward the What's Going On era, resulting in the notably more pensive Sea of Noise. The arrangements here are still at least as dynamic, however, with not only the expanded lineup, but the addition of a string quartet and choir on some songs. Synths, strings, and the choir are introduced early on the atmospheric -- and contemporary-sounding -- "Crumbling Light Posts." It's a three-part piece that opens, closes, and hits the midway point of the record. It also informs the album's title with the lyrics "We're just crumbling light posts in a sea of noise." The intro leads into the funky "Flow with It (You Got Me Feeling Like)," whose accented bass, horns, rhythm guitar, organ, and drums contribute to a lively, sophisticated sound more typical of the album. That song's all about heartache and lust, but one of the more socially aware entries, which doubles as one of the more orchestral, follows later in "I'll Be Your Woman." High on musical drama that hangs on the vocal performance, the soulful song challenges gender roles in a twist on style standards, with lyrics like "let me lay in your strong arms." Later, Janeway does his best Sam Cooke (and it's a good one) on "Burning Rome," a song he described as a hypothetical letter to God. On the whole, while its more serious tone may disappoint some fans of Half the City, Sea of Noise's performances are just as tight and as passionate, and even more impressive in their maturity and scope. ~ Marcy Donelson

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/st-paul-the-broken-bones-sea-of-noise_ZmkXk.jpg?v=1741037618
okkervil-river-away-lp
AWAY (LP)
The eighth studio long-player from the Will Sheff-led ensemble, Away serves as both a denouement and a commencement for Okkervil River; a string of old beer tickets and a crisp hundred-dollar bill fished out of a retired jean jacket during a basement purge. Written during a period of personal and professional upheaval that included the death of Sheff's beloved grandfather, Away, despite boasting a talented crew of collaborators, feels more like a solo outing than a fussed-over band project -- Sheff sums it up more elliptically as "It's not really an Okkervil River album and it's also my favorite Okkervil River album." Recorded on Long Island with a seasoned posse of N.Y.C.-based indie rock, jazz, and avant-garde players, the nine-track set is by far his loosest and most lyrical to date -- each song was completed in just one or two takes. Opener "Okkervil River R.I.P." sets a melancholy tone, and with the exception of the bouncy "Judey on a Street," that faded postcard patina extends throughout the remaining eight tracks. The gorgeous, psilocybin-mushrooms-expedited "Call Yourself Renee" and the tone poem-ish and aptly named "Days Spent Floating (In the Halfbetween)," the latter composed via an October spent parsing through each morning's first complete thought, see Sheff pushing outward a bit from the erudite confessionalism of the past, but his long-winded conversational lyrics are still as evocative ever -- the lovely "Comes Indiana Through the Smoke" imagines the battleship that Sheff's grandfather served on in WWII returning to him in his final moments. The paucity of any full-on rockers may drive some listeners back to the group's more propulsive, earlier works, but the sullen, sweet, and soulful Away rewards a patient ear. ~ James Christopher Monger

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

S+@DIUM ROCK: FIVE NIGHTS AT THE OPERA is a Records & LPs from Titus Andronicus

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/titus-andronicus-sdium-rock-five-nights-at-the-opera_PCGNQ.jpg?v=1757349924
nine-inch-nails-with-david-bowie-back-in-anger-the-1995-radio-transmissions-st-louis-mo-1995-vol-1
Back In Anger: The 1995 Radio Transmissions: St Louis, Mo 1995 Vol 1

Back In Anger: The 1995 Radio Transmissions: St Louis, Mo 1995 Vol 1 is a Records & LPs from Nine Inch Nails With David Bowie

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/nine-inch-nails-with-david-bowie-back-in-anger-the-1995-radio-transmissions-st-louis-mo-1995-vol-1_0pEtc.jpg?v=1759285256
bastille-wild-world-vinyl
WILD WORLD (VINYL)
Though their debut album, Bad Blood, was released in 2012 and their huge hit "Pompeii" dominated the airwaves in 2013, Bastille never really went away during the years that followed. Thanks to mixtapes like VS. and their consistent touring -- as well as their fondness for premiering songs in concert -- Wild World's arrival in 2016 felt more inevitable than surprising. Even so, the refinements they've made since Bad Blood are striking. Bastille have learned exactly what people want from them, and "Pompeii" provides the model for the album's punchy production and sharpened hooks (although none of them are quite as ingenious as that song's a cappella chant). Sometimes, the band borrows from the song blatantly: On "Snakes," Dan Smith prays for "the ground to swallow me whole," and when he asks "What's gonna be left of the world if you're not in it?" on "Good Grief," it echoes "Pompeii"'s questioning chorus, "How am I going to be an optimist about this?" More often, though, Wild World recaptures the way that song seized moments of joy in the face of disaster, whether it's the threat of a Donald Trump presidency ("The Currents") or getting older and giving up ("Lethargy"). Bastille expand on this template as much as they refine it, adding hints of R&B, dance, and rock to their anthemic pop. "Glory" is a standout, setting Smith's lilting vocals to stark, R&B-tinged verses before unleashing its massive choruses. Elsewhere, "Warmth" opens with an honest-to-goodness guitar solo, while the stomping "Blame" could be a collaboration with Imagine Dragons. When the band departs from Wild World's formula, the results are mixed; built on insistent bass and brass, "Send Them Off!" is one of the album's best and most distinctive moments, but the ballad "Two Evils" drags a bit. Nevertheless, Wild World proves that Bastille can build on their success with style. They're the kind of band that sounds better as they get bigger, and their thoughtful lyrics, jaunty melodies, and huge choruses could fill a Coldplay-shaped hole in listeners' hearts. ~ Heather Phares

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

Hotly tipped Icelandic quartet Kaleo deliver A/B, their debut album for Atlantic Records. Granted, the biopic was presumably made to cash in on the actor's untimely demise, but movie buffs also recognize it as one of director Robert Altman's earliest features. The score was written by Leith Stevens, who had previously worked on Private Hell 36 (1954), The Wild One (1954), and the Oscar-winning sci-fi classic Destination Moon (1950). Those credentials may have gotten Stevens the gig, but his contributions remain somewhat of a double-edged sword. Neither Baker, Shank, nor any of the other post-bop luminaries in the makeshift ensemble are able to transcend or expound upon the arguably limiting melodies, such as the hopelessly dated and unintentionally kitschy "Hollywood." That shouldn't suggest that this title is a complete washout, thanks in part to another Tinsel Town-related maestro, Johnny Mandel, whose moody, exploratory "The Search" and understated noir of "Success and Then What?" stand as exemplary. One of Stevens' more affective selections is the ballad "Let Me Be Loved." Perhaps by design, it is noticeably reminiscent of Baker's unofficial theme song, "My Funny Valentine," and is easily the most poignant performance on the platter. Otherwise, the vast majority of the material is little more than ersatz-cool filler, bearing little distinction. From a historical perspective, this seems almost criminal, especially in light of the inordinate talent corralled for the project. Once the '90s poster children for grungy sweet, '70s-style rock melodicism, the Scottish outfit centered on singer/songwriters Norman Blake, Gerard Love, and Raymond McGinley has aged into a bittersweet, poetically nuanced entity as connected to its roots as a gorgeously gnarled oak on a stark hillside. Produced by the band in France and at McGinley's home in Glasgow, Here has a soft, organic quality that feels unfussed with. Of course, that easygoing vibe belies some obvious craftsmanship, as tracks like the brightly engaging "Live in the Moment" and the sweeping "The Darkest Part of the Night" feature horn and string flourishes. Primarily, the focus on Here, as with most of TFC's albums, is the band's warm vocals and guitar-based hooks that somehow manage to get pleasantly stuck in your head for days. Closing in on 30 years together, "the Fannies" are the Ents of the power pop world. Like Tolkien's talking trees, TFC are slow-moving musical giants who come together roughly every five years to craft a set of well-honed songs rife with lyricism, sunlight, and, as in the case of Here, a transcendental sadness. It's a melancholy accent the band carries throughout much of the album. On the starry-eyed "I Have Nothing More to Say," Love sings, "Clear me a space, I'm in need of isolation, a warm dark bed to ease my strain." However, rather than coming off as negative or starkly depressive, the band strike a tone of humble gratitude. On "Hold On," McGinley sings,"Wake up, I'm alive, one more day, yeah, I'm alive." Later, he punctuates the affirmation with the deceptively unassuming observation, "I don't hear much fanfare for the common man these days." Teenage Fanclub have built a career writing fanfares for the common man and Here is rife with them. These are heartfelt anthems about the transformative nature of everyday love and how a sunny day or sparkling melody can restore your faith in humanity. As Blake sings on the opening "I'm in Love," "There is pain in this world, I can see it in your eyes, and it's so hard to stay alive at the edge of the night/ But it feels good when you're next to me, that's enough, that's enough." Ultimately, for Teenage Fanclub fans longing to live in that transformative pop moment, Here should be more than enough. ~ Matt Collar

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

Faith No More: Mike Patton (vocals); Jon Hudson (guitar); Roddy Bottum (keyboards); Billy Gould (bass); Mike Bordin (drums).
Producers: Roli Mosimann, Billy Gould, Faith No More.
Engineers: Daniel Presley, Michael Bogus, Atom.
Recorded at Razor's Edge and Brilliant Studios, San Francisco, California.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR is Faith No More's sixth full-length release. Green.
Building off the technical experimentation of Merciless, Selfless turned out to be more what Broadrick later called his "rock & roll album." And while it was in ways the most accessible release the band did in the '90s, it wasn't per se commercial. The rough, clipped, lock and load style of the band remained essentially unchanged at heart -- Broadrick's brawling, echoed vocals, the sheer impact of the guitars and drum machine beats, Green's uneasy bass. Still, some of the singing is Broadrick's most conventional, some of the riffing almost epically classic rock, and the technical/digital pulse at the heart of the band sufficiently straightforward enough not to annoy those who can't stand the idea of a non-human drummer. Songs like "Anything Is Mine" and "Crush My Soul," the latter infused with a strange breathing rhythm loop, or so it sounds, capture this version of major-label Godflesh pretty well, both unpleasant enough to keep the wimps away and accessible enough to win over the more open-minded. It's a slightly uneasy balance but one that the band still makes work, with enough worthy tunes on Selfless to make it of interest. There are plenty of other tunes pitched towards a slower, more restrained pitch, like Pure's "I Wasn't Born to Follow" -- good examples here include "Black Boned Angel" and the mighty fine "Empyreal." "Mantra," with its appropriately minimal lyrics (one word per verse, treated with even more echo than before), makes for one of the best songs on the album, doom-laden and quietly haunted all at once. The final track takes it to a logical limit; "Go Spread Your Wings" isn't "Pure II" redux, but it's about the same length, exchanging the sprawling chaos of the earlier tune for a more formal, slowly building arrangement of husky whispers into typical Broadrick vocals, slow guitar parts and even what sounds like piano. ~ Ned Raggett

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/09/2016

Primal Scream, in 1989, confounded their fans and foes alike by growing their hair past their shoulders, buying Marshall amps and turning them up to 11, and by showing an alarming tendency to appear in public shirtless. Previously the Scream had been the most precious of indie poppers, Byrds fans down to their fringed jackets and freshly-combed bowl haircuts. However, their major-label debut, a pristine pop record, was a big flop, and after they booted out co-founder Jim Beattie, they were ready to fully embrace rock & roll and all the attitude and noise that came with it. Out went the Byrds, in came the MC5, and Primal Scream was ready to rock. Unfortunately, while the group was capable of whipping up a credible approximation of thuggish hard rock, Bobby Gillespie's fragile wisp of a voice is rather ill-suited to kicking out the jams. The lyrics, while never a strong point for Primal Scream, are pretty embarrassing, too. The song titles alone sound like they were borrowed from Jesse Camp's LP: "Gimme Gimme Teenage Head," "She Power," "Lone Star Girl"! What saves the record are the handful of slow torch songs. Gillespie's shaky vocals are affecting and powerful, the band plays with a dramatically light touch, and Martin Duffy's piano work is stellar. The best song here is "I'm Losing More Than I Ever Had," which is a soul-searching mid-tempo song with a great arrangement filled with slide guitar, horns, and gospel backing singers. It also served as the basis for Andrew Weatherall's mix of "Loaded," the song that really made Primal Scream an important band and helped change the history of indie rock. Over two whirlwind years, the gritty Texas band hit #1 on the iTunes Country Chart with their breakout third album 'Early Morning Shakes,' earned raves everywhere from Rolling Stone to USA Today, and toured the US and UK relentlessly, slaying massive festival crowds and sharing stages with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr., Jamey Johnson, and more along the way. You'd be forgiven, then, for expecting things to work a little differently this time around when the band reunited with acclaimed producer Dave Cobb for their stellar new album, 'Mud.' But as it turns out, success doesn't change a Southern gentleman, and they don't come any more Southern than Whiskey Myers. Fueled by larger-than-life performances honed tight from countless nights on the road, 'Mud' finds the band scaling new heights of songwriting and musicianship, with searing guitars, soulful vocals, and indelible hooks.

Tracks
1 On the River
2 Mud
3 Lightning Bugs and Rain
4 Deep Down in the South
5 Stone
6 Trailer We Call Home
7 Some of Your Love
8 Frogman
9 Hank
10 Good Ole Days (Feat.
