Always poised for a significant hit, they instead wound up with a devoted cult following that peaked around the release of 2006's The Black Parade, a gobsmacked concept album on par with Pink Floyd's The Wall or maybe Marilyn Manson's Antichrist Superstar, but MCR were always more in tune with teen angst and were always more fun, as the 2014 hits compilation May Death Never Stop You: The Greatest Hits 2001-2013 proves. The 19-track compilation contains three demos plus the new song "Fake Your Death," which opens a compilation that otherwise diligently marches forth in chronological order. The debut, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, is dismissed with two songs -- "Honey, This Mirror Isn't Big Enough for the Two of Us" and "Vampires Will Never Hurt You" -- leaving the molten rock of Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge plenty of room, but The Black Parade is the centerpiece of this collection, as it's represented with five songs and its strong follow-up, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, has four songs. The key to Black Parade and Danger Days is how MCR embraced theatricality -- the overblown drama inherent to leader Gerard Way's beloved comics -- and they could translate it well to record. They had records worth hearing in full -- The Black Parade, certainly, plus Three Cheers and Danger Days -- but the great thing about May Death Never Stop You is how it showcases all their brilliant, florid moments so they sound like visionaries without a continent to call home. Maybe they could've been bigger stars, but they channeled all the sturm and drang of the new millennium into heady goth-punk operas that still sound great when broken down into their individual elements, as this fine compilation proves. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock and Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Cassette

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/My-Chemical-Romance-May-Death-Never-Stop-You_ehjaP.jpg?v=1740681390
led-zeppelin-complete-bbc-sessions
Led Zeppelin COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS

Liner Note Authors: Luis Rey; Dave Lewis .
Back in 1997, Led Zeppelin released BBC Sessions, the band's first attempt to chronicle its heavily bootlegged live recordings for the British Broadcasting Corporation. That double-disc set didn't contain all of Zep's BBC Sessions: a full nine songs from 1969 were left behind, including three songs recorded in March -- a session highlighted by the otherwise unavailable original "Sunshine Woman" -- that were believed to be lost. The 2016 triple-disc set The Complete BBC Sessions adds those songs as a third disc to a remastered version of the original 1997 compilation, an addition that doesn't greatly alter the overall picture of Zeppelin's BBC Sessions but offers a whole lot of additional value. Without those sessions, the compilation remains a stellar showcase of Led Zeppelin in ascendancy but with them the portrait deepens, particularly in how "Communication Breakdown" winds up being a place for the bandmembers to stretch their legs, incorporating covers or even interpolations of their own songs; it's a place where their intensity is married to their thirst for adventure. Elsewhere, there are plenty of extended blues jams -- "I Can't Quit You Baby" and "You Shook Me" from the lost March 1969 session are condensed and sound all the more powerful for it; similarly, the woozy rearrangement of Robert Johnson's "Travelling Riverside Blues" resonates because it's concise -- but the music that hits hardest remains the live-wire rockabilly ("Somethin' Else") and revved-up blues-boogie, the latter coming to the forefront on the otherwise unavailable "The Girl I Love She Got Long Black Wavy Hair" and that unearthed "Sunshine Woman," a throwaway raver that shows just how loose, muscular, and invigorating Zeppelin were at the outset. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Format: CD

Released: 09/16/2016

Genre: Pop

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Led-Zeppelin-COMPLETE-BBC-SESSIONS_YSEOZ.jpg?v=1737793201
of-mice-men-cold-world-colored-vinyl-import
Cold World (Colored Vinyl) [Import]

Cold World (Colored Vinyl) [Import] is a Records & LPs from Of Mice & Men

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Of-Mice-Men-Cold-World-Colored-Vinyl-Import_YxR95.jpg?v=1759152777
sam-cooke-my-kind-of-blues-swing-low-hits-of-the-50s
My Kind of Blues/Swing Low/Hits of the 50's

My Kind of Blues/Swing Low/Hits of the 50's is a Records & LPs from Sam Cooke

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/sam-cooke-my-kind-of-bluesswing-lowhits-of-the-50s_NeIkp.jpg?v=1759067697
knocked-loose-laugh-tracks-import
Laugh Tracks [Import]
Tracks
1 Oblivions Peak
2 Deadringer
3 The Rain
4 Blood Will Have Blood
5 Counting Worms
6 My Heroes
7 Billy No Mates
8 Last Words
9 No Thanks
10 A Fetish
11 Laugh Tracks

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Knocked-Loose-Laugh-Tracks-Import_SuMPt.jpg?v=1758976004
sun-ra-nuclear-war
NUCLEAR WAR
Sun Ra Arkestra includes: Sun Ra (vocals, piano, organ, synthesizer); June Tyson (vocals); Marshall Allen (alto saxophone, flute); John Gilmore (tenor saxophone); Danny Ray Thompson (baritone saxophone, flute); Walter Miller (trumpet); Vincent Chancey (French horn); Tyrone Hill (trombone); James Jacson (bassoon, drums); Hayes Burnett (bass); Samarai Celestial (drums); Atakatune (conas, percussion).
Producer: Dick O'Dell.
Reissue producer: John Corbett.
Recorded at Variety Studios, New York, New York in September 1982. Younger than Jerry Lee Lewis by four years and older than Bob Dylan by two, Hunter resists the siren call of nostalgia on 2016's Fingers Crossed, but he also never pretends he's younger than his years. Where 2007's Shrunken Heads kicked against the pricks, Fingers Crossed feels settled even when the tempo starts to quicken. Maybe Hunter is a little slower and softer than he was even as a 60-year-old, but he's still a rebel, not least in how he's still striving to engage with new music. Make no mistake, Hunter isn't attempting to connect with the modern world -- quite frankly, it sounds like he hasn't heard an album since 1978 -- but his faith in his form gives the lean rock & roll of Fingers Crossed energy. Maybe the kicks aren't so high, but Hunter works within his limits, rocking just hard enough to seem vital and, best of all, his songs remain a thing of wonder: careful and clever, the work of a singer/songwriter who values idiosyncrasy over eccentricity. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Internal ID: JITRE

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/ian-hunter-fingers-crossed-180-gram-vinyl-digital-download-card_vojHc.jpg?v=1759280162
porcupine-tree-nil-recurring
NIL RECURRING
Long-running progressive rock act Porcupine Tree, fresh off of their critically-acclaimed FEAR OF A BLANK PLANET, continue their grand experiment on the hallucinogenic and at times fearsomely heavy NIL RECURRING. A brief and uneven album, Smokes Like Lightnin' is less compelling than Hopkins' '50s recordings, but strikes an appealingly lazy acoustic groove. ~ Greg Adams

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Lightnin-Hopkins-SMOKES-LIKE-LIGHTNING_Z3lhh.jpg?v=1759215942
brand-x-live-in-rochester-1977
LIVE IN ROCHESTER 1977
Personnel: John Goodsall (guitar); Robin Lumley (keyboards); Kenwood Dennard (drums); Morris Pert (percussion).

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/brand-x-live-in-rochester-1977_mVnXr_6eb2bccb-cf84-4bf5-8f2c-57c340921809.jpg?v=1759355179
amanda-shires-my-piece-of-land
My Piece of Land *
Personnel: Amanda Shires (vocals, tenor guitar, ukulele, violin); Jason Isbell (guitar, piano); Dave Cobb (guitar); Derry Deborja (keyboards); Paul Griffith (drums).
Audio Mixer: Dave Cobb.
Photographer: Josh Wool.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/amanda-shires-my-piece-of-land-_rXosp_785f52fe-131d-4137-917f-ea38ef93d982.jpg?v=1759078641
omen-hammer-damage
HAMMER DAMAGE
Personnel: Kevin Goocher (vocals); Kenny Powell (guitar); Steve Wittig (drums).
Audio Mixer: Kenny Powell.
Recording information: Khan Studios, Dallas, TX; Tinseltone Studios, Santa Clarita, CA.
Editor: Kenny Powell.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/16/2016

Audio Mixers: Josh Schroeder ; King 810.
Recording information: Atlantic Studios, NYC.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/king-810-la-petite-mort-or-a-conversation-with-god_weHuv.jpg?v=1758797859
sumerlands-sumerlands
SUMERLANDS
Personnel: Phil Swanson (vocals); Arthur Rizk (guitar, synthesizer); John Powers (guitar); Justin DeTore (drums).
Recording information: Creep Records, Philadelphia, USA.
Philly quintet Sumerlands are one of the few bands that could embody the term "nostalgic" and color it with positive connotations. The power metal act showed up out of nowhere in 2014 with its killer "Guardian" demo and immediately conjured fond memories of the best in late-'80s and early-'90s heavy metal. The band was founded by guitarist and renowned producer/engineer Arthur Rizk (Power Trip, Eternal Champion, War Hungry) and vocalist Phil Swanson (Hour of 13, Briton Rites). The lineup is rounded out by intrepid drummer Justin DeTore and Leather's guitarist and bassist John Powers and Brad Raub, respectively. Together they revel in lineage sounds from prime Cirith Ungol, Queensr?che, Fates Warning, Manilla Road and more but add enough of their own dynamic and musicality to deliver a compelling debut. The set opens with "The Seventh Seal" and "The Guardian," the former offering swirling guitar breaks and furious chugging, the latter a thick, ultra-heavy midtempo riff and phase-shifted effects on Swanson's clean, expressive vocals. The power riff in "Timelash" gives way to a melodic chorus before the bridge cleverly inverts and syncopates Led Zeppelin's intro from "The Song Remains the Same." Other highlights include the galloping "Spiral Infinite" and "Blind" and the doom-tinged "Lost My Mind" with its sharp-edged fills, slow churning bridge, and unhinged yet majestic chiming dual solo. Swanson is a terrific singer. The timbre of his voice recalls a younger Ozzy Osbourne (circa the early '80s), but his range of expression and phrasing are his own. Rizk's mix places the vocals on par with or just a hair below the dominant guitars, allowing the listener to take in every dark, occult-tinged word clearly. While reference points are great -- it's also easy to pinpoint Lizzy Borden, early Metal Church, and even Candlemass among the band's sources -- they are not the whole picture. Sumerlands are unapologetically arrayed in metal's storied past, but their fine songwriting, excellent musicianship, and wonderful production allow them to stand on their own. The achievement of their debut album lies not in its innovation but in the way the bandmembers execute on what they know and build on those inspirations. This 32-minute full-length should make all but the wretchedly cynical black-clad aficionado sit up and take notice. Keith is pushing 50, and while he's sounded like he's phoning it in on some of his later albums, he generally sounds pretty energized on this one, and many of his rhymes are flat-out hilarious. Even though he only does about half the rapping, he produced most of the selections (billed as Number One Producer), so it sounds remarkably cohesive. The tracks tend to be minimalist, usually just sticking to a booming beat and ominous pianos or synth melodies, putting a spotlight on the lyrics. Keith is still a master at coming up with rapid-fire non sequiturs, offering to "put lingerie on Marie Osmond" a minute into the album on "Stratocaster." His favorite lyrical subjects remain sex, food, comic book characters (not for nothing does MF Doom show up on the song called "Super Hero"), basketball, and his disgust with the rap industry. He's as filthy as ever on tracks like "Girl Grab," on which he's matched by Necro, who is gleefully offensive as always. Keith rants against a music business that doesn't recognize his genius on "Tired," and Ed O.G seems even more enraged than him. "Peer Pressure" is more introspective, with Keith reflecting on his upbringing and the early days of his career while Atmosphere's Slug ends up delivering wackier rhymes ("I play fantasy football with John Lithgow and Pitbull"). The album's smoothest track is "Bonneville," a G-funk jam featuring a confident guest verse from Bay Area legend Mac Mall. Worth, Texas; OceanWay; Sunset sound; Sunset sound Factory.
Photographers: Greg Allen; Steven Rothfeld.
By the mid-'80s, Peter Case had made a name for himself as one of the most exciting talents on the Los Angeles rock & roll scene, first with the pioneering power pop group the Nerves and later the explosive R&B-influenced garage pop act the Plimsouls. The Plimsouls' second album, 1983's Everywhere at Once, made it clear Case knew how to write a memorable song and make a powerful record. But it didn't prepare anyone for the revelation of Peter Case, his 1986 solo debut. The album saw Case moving away from straightforward rock & roll into a more acoustic-based approach, though electric guitars were still part of Case's formula, and his elemental harmonica work confirmed his connection to the blues. While the artist on Peter Case seemed a bit more like a folkie, he could still write a melody that would stick in the ear, and as a lyricist, he'd taken his craft to a new level. Peter Case was literate and introspective in a way Case's previous songwriting was not, but without seeming pretentious or self-involved. Case's new songs often dealt with a changing America, looking back to the promise and turbulence of the '60s on songs like "Steel Strings," "I Shook His Hand," and "Satellite Beach" while also pondering the light and dark within the human heart on "Small Town Spree" and "Walk in the Woods." Case wrote and recorded the album after experiencing a spiritual awakening, but if matters of the heart and the soul are a frequent part of these songs, Case shows no interest in preaching, instead allowing listeners to reach their own conclusions from the lives and misadventures of his characters. And producer T-Bone Burnett (assisted by Mitchell Froom on four tunes) helped Case create a lively and expressive backdrop for the songs, aided immeasurably by Jerry Marotta's percussion and a haunting string arrangement by Van Dyke Parks on "Small Town Spree." Peter Case would make other albums as good as his solo debut, but there's an excitement and a joyous embrace of creative possibilities that make it perhaps his most immediately engaging album. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Folk

Format: CD

Released: 09/16/2016

Liner Note Author: Joel McIver.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/uriah-heep-your-turn-to-remember-the-definitive-anthology_pvgJn.jpg?v=1759383937
the-verve-urban-hymns-180-gram-vinyl-import-2-lps
Urban Hymns (180 Gram Vinyl) [Import] (2 Lp's)

Urban Hymns (180 Gram Vinyl) [Import] (2 Lp's) is a Records & LPs from The Verve

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Verve-Urban-Hymns-180-Gram-Vinyl-Import-2-Lps_2yiyR.jpg?v=1744392558
touche-amore-stage-four-digital-download-card
Stage Four (Digital Download Card)
TracksCredits
1 Flowers and You
2 New Halloween
3 Rapture
4 Displacement
5 Benediction
6 Eight Seconds
7 Palm Dreams
8 Softer Spoken
9 Posing Holy
10 Water Damage
11 Skyscraper

Genre: Punk

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Touche-Amore-Stage-Four-Digital-Download-Card_Vsdk4.jpg?v=1741892593
bassnectar-unlimited-limited-edition-colored-vinyl-green-black-yellow
Unlimited (Limited Edition, Colored Vinyl, Green, Black, Yellow)
DESCRIPTION
Limited double splattered colored vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. 2016 release. He contributed a couple of songs to its 1995 sequel, Welcome to the Neighborhood, but by the time Meat Loaf was ready to do a third installment of Bat Out of Hell, Steinman opted out for unspecified reasons, leaving the singer to use five previously released Steinman songs as produced by Desmond Child -- a satisfactory compromise that at the very least illustrated how Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" should've been on a Bat Out of Hell album. Through a series of circumstances, Meat Loaf and Steinman wound up reuniting for 2016's Braver Than We Are, which was produced by Paul Crook, just like its 2012 predecessor Hell in a Handbasket. While the record bears some slick modern hallmarks, it is very much a throwback, evoking memories of Todd Rundgren's overblown Springsteen parody of 1977 as well as the earnest re-creation of 1993. Steinman's songs are suitably theatrical -- the opening "Who Needs the Young" feels like it's a Broadway reject -- and while he slyly winks at his past with "Going All the Way Is Just the Start (A Song in 6 Movements)," a song that features a cameo from "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" singer Ellen Foley, he also seems unaware that Ratt also got to the title "Loving You Is a Dirty Job" in 1990 (albiet after Steinman whose composition first appeared as a Bonnie Tyler single in 1985). That isolation is ultimately a benefit because Braver Than We Are feels caught between nostalgia and indifference, an album so old-fashioned it seems happily ignorant of modernity even when it threads EDM rhythms and metallic guitars into "More." The other way it's possible to tell this album was released in 2016 is Meat Loaf's performance. Thin and sometimes breathless, he's no longer the colossus of the '70s, but the diminishment of his range humanizes him and adds a bittersweet tinge to this reunion. Through Meat Loaf's voice alone, mortality becomes evident and it makes this third reunion with Steinman all the sweeter. Braver Than We Are may have its flaws -- it's too staid and self-conscious, for one -- but Steinman never found a better interpreter for his songs than Meat Loaf, and Meat Loaf never sounds more like himself than he does when singing Steinman, and that's why the album works. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

The fifth studio album from Dawes, 2016's cheekily titled We're All Gonna Die, finds the rootsy Los Angeles outfit pushing its melodic, literate roots rock in an artsier, more sonically experimental direction. Following up the group's engaging 2015 effort All Your Favorite Bands, We're All Gonna Die feels like the beginning of a creative transformation where the band begins to shed all genre constraints and influences, emerging as its own fantastically musical creature. It brings to mind the early-2000s metamorphosis of Wilco, the most obvious antecedent to Dawes' own thinking-man's folk-rock aesthetic. Still centered on lead singer/songwriter Taylor Goldsmith, Dawes take all the poignant twang that made up their previous work and imbue it with a tactile, delicately experimental vibe on a set of songs that are as imaginative and catchy as ever.
Some of the credit for the band's auspicious phonic shift here must go to former Dawes guitarist Blake Mills, who returned to handle production duties. With his knack for rootsy authenticity and ear for indie rock explorations, Mills' approach brings to mind the similarly inclined work of producers Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake with artists like Sheryl Crow and Ron Sexsmith. However, rather than contriving something arch and impenetrable, Dawes' songs here are wry, often humorous, and filled with an open-armed joy for life. That joy is reflected in the band's unexpected musical choices. Built around a clipped, low-end electric guitar riff, the leadoff track, "One of Us," finds Goldsmith layering his voice in lo-fi microphone fuzz, deftly undercutting the song's sparkling, infectious chorus. Similarly, the band contrasts a booming distorted bass riff against '70s wah-wah guitar on the euphoric, soul-inflected "When the Tequila Runs Out." Elsewhere, as on the the vibrantly tropical "Picture of a Man," Dawes frame Goldsmith's vocals against a ringing church organ and a kinetic layer of insect-sounding percussion and harmonized backing vocals.
All told, the album vibrates with a dichotomous energy that somehow brings to mind an improbable mix of Tom Petty, Paul Simon, and Electric Light Orchestra. And it's an energy that flows from Goldsmith's lyrics as he finds layers of metaphysical irony and eye-winking depth to unveil in his steady, warm croon. As Goldsmith sings on "As If by Design," "The stars were just the holes punched in the shoebox/That gives a creature all the air he needs to breathe/As if every constellation was just a form of ventilation/From a captor too enormous to conceive." And later, "Every day getting a little more acquainted with the riddles until I'm looking for them everywhere I go." With We're All Gonna Die, Dawes have crafted an album rife with riddles and musical poetry, whose meaning may take a few listens to completely grab you. However, when it does finally hit you, it's hard to shake the feeling that Dawes have opened a door into the cosmos. ~ Matt Collar

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

DESCRIPTION
Double vinyl LP pressing. The formula was simple: marry bubblegum and soul to the absolute sincerity of an enthusiastic child, cross your fingers and pray for airplay. But while the youthful sums of that formula may have grown up and walked away from their illusions of stardom, their permanent records remain. By 1973, Michael, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Jackie were as hip as kids could get - household names, with lunchboxes, coloring books, a Saturday morning cartoon, and an Alpha-Bits cereal commercial pushing the J5 brand onto any kid with television reception. Their impressive run of four consecutive #1 singles playing on both pop and R&B stations cemented their appeal to both whites and blacks, prompting MGM to launch the Osmonds as the safer (read: white) alternative. And parents? Well Michael had that wrapped up with his impossible-not-to-love mini-James Brown thing. Even their song selection straddled both sides, with "Zip A Dee Do Dah" and "ABC" for kids, and contemporary standards "Standing In The Shadows Of Love" and "My Cherie Amour" for the older crowd. This extreme marketing and merchandising juggernaut created the kid soul explosion. A decade removed from Numero's acclaimed Home Schooled compilation comes a fresh batch of talent show titans. With enterprising parents, neighbors, and teachers turning play dates into recording dates, groups likeMagical Connection, Little Man and the Inquires, and Five Ounces of Soul emulated the Jacksons, who'd made grade-school stardom appear easy as ABC. Afterschool Special: The 123s Of Kid Soul contains 19 tiny tunes ranging from bilingual D.A.R.E. anthem, to James Brown bio, to young love and life beyond the playground.

TracksCredits
1 Bethlehem Center Children's Choir - I'm a Special Kid
2 Scott Three - Runnin' Wild (Ain't Gonna Help You)
3 Jimi Hill - Guessing Games
4 Leonard (Lil' Man) Kaigler - You Got Me Believing
5 Cash - I Love You Still
6 Brighter Side of Darkness - Because I Love You
7 Next Movement - Every Where You Go
8 The Bennett's - I Want a Little Girl
9 Future Kind - Simon Says
10 The Dynamics - I'm Free, No Dope for Me
11 The Brother's Rap - the Revolution Will Not Be Televised
12 The Greer Brothers - We Don't Dig No Busing (The Busing Song)
13 Little Man & the Inquires - Funky Breakdown
14 Five Ounces of Soul - Love Got a Piece of Your Mind
15 Magical Connection - Girl Why Do You Want to Take My Heart
16 Soul Emotions & Co. - It's Time for Love
17 Brotherly Five - Losing My Girl
18 The Mighty Mustangs - the Other Guy
19 Nancy Dupree with a Group of Youngsters - James Brown

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/various-afterschool-special-123s-of-kid-soul-2-lps_rPe5z.jpg?v=1759241287
godflesh-songs-of-love-hate
SONGS OF LOVE & HATE
Godflesh: J.K. Broadrick (guitar, vocals); G.C. Green (bass); B. Mantia (drums, percussion).
Engineers: J.K. Broadrick, G.C. Green, Steve Freeman, House.
Recorded at Avalanche, England and Tyrell Productions, Oakland, California in 1995 and 1996.
Of the many excellent Godflesh albums released during the '90s, Songs of Love and Hate will appeal to fans of traditional heavy metal more than any of the other albums. The preceding albums -- Pure, Merciless, and Selfless -- integrated a strong sense of industrial mechanics with their machine-driven percussion into Justin Broadrick and G.C. Green's aggressive, detuned guitar poetry. Succeeding releases -- Songs of Love and Hate in Dub and Us and Them -- integrated even more computerized manipulation into Godflesh's emo-heavy metal with these albums' hip-hop, dub techno, and drum'n'bass flavors. But on this particular intermediary album, Broadrick and Green actually chose to use a human drummer rather than strictly machines, giving this album a much more traditional sound than any of these other albums. The songs on Songs of Love and Hate are less mechanical and more fluid than preceding albums just as they are less innovative and more standard than succeeding releases. Of course, just because Godflesh happen to conform to traditional heavy metal practices on Songs of Love and Hate doesn't mean that the music pales in comparison to the group's other albums. In fact, never before has the group rocked so hard, sounding tighter as a unit and more human than ever before. Broadrick's lyrics aren't epic or complex, but rather succinct and lucid, dwelling almost entirely on contradictory emotional extremes. For example, on "Gift from Heaven," the ex-Napalm Death guitarist shouts "I am nothing/feel like everything" during the chorus and mumbles lyrics such as "I am love/I am hate/hate my love/love my hate" during the verse. The monolithic riffs grind harmoniously as they never have before, with Broadrick's gigantic guitar tone bulging through the speakers with rude, distorted salience while Green's bass guitar grinds with more prominence than one can nearly handle. To make the sounds even more extreme, B. Mantia smashes and hammers his drums with rabid aggression, instilling the sense of anger than no machine can possibly accomplish. Yet for as intense and aggressive as this album is, in addition to its bleeding emotions, it isn't quite as daring as other Godflesh albums. Every song tends to follow the same template of intro-verse-chorus-bridge with similar sounds, tempos, and moods. What makes albums such as Pure and Us and Them so amazing is partly their experimentation. Sure, every song on these albums may not be successful, but the first listen is always a rewarding experience as Broadrick explores the future of grindcore-influenced heavy metal. The succeeding Songs of Love and Hate in Dub showcases the experimental possibilities of these songs, offering listeners a chance to decide between the traditional approach and the experimental approach. ~ Jason Birchmeier

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

Full Fathom Five is a Records & LPs from Clutch

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

Live At Rockpalast 1978 is a Records & LPs from Ian Dury & The Blockheads

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/ian-dury-the-blockheads-live-at-rockpalast-1978_3KW1z.jpg?v=1758971100
willie-nelson-for-the-good-times-a-tribute-to-ray-pri
FOR THE GOOD TIMES: A TRIBUTE TO RAY PRI
Tributee: Ray Price.
Willie Nelson joined Ray Price's Cherokee Cowboys in 1961, the first step in a lifelong friendship between the two men. From that point on, the pair never fell out of touch. At the height of his superstardom in 1980, Nelson cut a duet album with Price called San Antonio Rose, the first of three joint efforts they'd cut over the years. Whenever the pair got together, they'd sing the old songs, Western swing standards and honky tonk classics from the '50s and '60s -- the songs that form the core of For the Good Times: A Tribute to Ray Price, a salute Willie delivered three years after Price's 2013 death. Supported by producer Fred Foster and arranger Bergen White -- a duo who also were friends with Price and completed his final album, Beauty Is -- Nelson doesn't make any attempt to freshen up these songs, which is the album's charm. Nelson salutes every phase of Ray's career, reviving the lush Nashville strings of Price's early-'70s hits in addition to the dry, dusty Texas two-steps and Ray Price shuffles. All of these sounds are considered traditional from the vantage of 2016 and, in effect, For the Good Times extends the tradition, not through reinvention but rather adherence. Nelson has been singing these songs all of his life, recording them several times a decade, but instead of seeming recycled, For the Good Times underscores how the song may remain the same but the singer does not. Nelson is showing his age -- his voice is leathery and tattered, much thinner than it was just ten years ago -- and yet that's part of the point of the album. Willie sang these songs with Ray and now that Price is gone, Nelson sings them a little differently, his love and melancholy accentuating his weathered voice. It makes for an affectionate and bittersweet album, one that is a fitting tribute to a lifelong friend. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/willie-nelson-for-the-good-times-a-tribute-to-ray-pri_RkWUV.jpg?v=1752598738
taking-back-sunday-tidal-wave
TIDAL WAVE
The seventh studio long-player from the emo/alt-rock veterans, Tidal Wave is the much anticipated follow-up to 2014's chart-topping Happiness Is.
