Yet here is one of those moments of cross-influence that changed the course of popular music. BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME gave Dylan an audience on a plate; it was a massive breakthrough. Like Nathan East, The New Cool is a Yamaha release. The label wing of the manufacturer also supplied the duo with instruments and enabled them to make this predominantly acoustic set of eight originals and three interpretations. Drummer Scott Williamson, percussionist Rafael Padilla, and an orchestra -- with David Davidson as concertmaster -- are all involved, yet they're employed sparingly and leave the spotlight to East and James. The album sounds like it was easy and fun to make -- one can sense joy and deep focus in the interplay -- as the material is predominantly amiable and laid-back. It's almost entirely instrumental, with East adding some occasional soft scatting, while Vince Gill drops by for the lone "proper" vocal inclusion on an elegant recasting of Willie Nelson's "Crazy." Just when it seems as if The New Cool will end as it began, in sunny and mellow form, the closing "Turbulence" develops into what's easily the album's most active cut. Composer James lets loose with some athletic electric piano, East's bass is at its taut and melodic best, and Williamson, known most for his work on contemporary country and Christian sessions, shows that he can also hang with two crucial jazz rhythm-section dignitaries. This is a pleasant, if inessential, addition to the catalogs of the two musicians. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/18/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/bob-james-nathan-east-new-cool_PPkGq.jpg?v=1759264665
frank-zappa-mudshark-live
Mudshark Live

Mudshark Live is a Records & LPs from Frank Zappa

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/18/2015

Statik Selektah is a renowned DJ and Producer based in NYC, born and raised in Boston. So when a long-standing, working-class band has -- count 'em -- 11 studio records, a classic EP, a covers album, and a double-live opus under their studded belt, metal aficionados have to at least give Wrecking Everything -- Live a couple of listens and nod their heads in respect to such a wily, stubborn outfit. Longtime fans will no doubt appreciate the fact that none of the songs utilized for 1995's Wrecking Your Neck are repeated here, Overkill having arguably their most prolific period (four rock-solid studio cinderblocks) since then. But Wrecking Everything -- Live still harkens back to 1985 with "Overkill" and includes choice nuggets from eight albums in the catalog, standouts being muscular riff monster "Long Time Dyin'," speed demon "Shred," and nefarious tempo-shifter "Evil Never Dies"; only the long-winded pseudo-ballad "The Years of Decay" sounds extraneous and dated. Otherwise, it's balls-out thrash from start to finish, recorded in the band's New Jersey stomping grounds and enhanced by a gutsy, clean, and powerful mix that makes Wrecking Your Neck sound thin and tinny in comparison. And one can't ignore Ellsworth's ever-strong vocal contributions -- gotta love that brutal, three-packs-a-day rasp -- and undeniable energy; fans who have witnessed Overkill live can attest to the wiry singer's sweaty, non-stop, Iggy Pop-like stage presence, something impossible to catch strictly on audio, but here at least in spirit. Shrugging off Wrecking Everything -- Live as inessential (what? Yet another Overkill disc?) is tempting, but this punchy and aggressive live document makes the ever-tenacious outfit sound as if they have something to prove -- which few outfits with 18 years in the biz so convincingly possess. Cornell University, Ithaca, NY (03/18/1971).
Photographers: Mary Ann Mayer; Herb Greene; Paul Ryan.
Initially released as a limited-edition box set so lavish it was on the verge of being absurd, 30 Trips Around the Sun is a deep exploration of a simple idea: tell the Grateful Dead's story through unreleased live performances taken from every year of their life. This concept reaches its full fruition in its 80-CD incarnation, containing a full unreleased show for every year between 1966 and 1995, but the four-CD distillation operates in a similar fashion and may seem more attractive to Deadheads unwilling to immerse themselves in a monthlong listening session. The closest analogy to 30 Trips in their discography is 1999's So Many Roads (1965-1995), a five-disc box heavy on unreleased live material, but that set wound up skipping over the fallow periods a chronological march inevitably hits. Aware of this pitfall, the archivists behind 30 Trips selected the finest unreleased shows from each of these 30 years and, for this set, chose to showcase songs that rarely appeared in the Dead's repertoire. This turns out to be a fairly broad category, encompassing Pigpen singing Lightnin' Hopkins "The Rub" in 1971 and Donna Jean Godchaux debuting with the band in 1972 via a duet with Jerry Garcia on Dolly Parton's "Tomorrow Is Forever," as well as Phil Lesh singing Robbie Robertson's "Broken Arrow" in 1993 and a bittersweet "Visions of Johanna" from 1995 that closes out the set. As its considerably shorter than its parent, the four-disc 30 Trips Around the Sun never lingers upon the eras of the Dead that cause consternation among fans -- here, Brent Mydland's synths don't seem quite so prominent and Vince Welnick's penchant for sambas is hidden -- yet this shorter box still illustrates how these eras bled together or echoed throughout the Dead's history. Most of all, 30 Trips illustrates how the Dead kept circling back to their folk and blues beginnings no matter who supplemented the core quintet of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart. While the four or five main keyboardists brought their own signatures (particularly Pigpen, whose rough-hewn growl provided a gritty counterpart to the band's spacy early explorations), come 1971, the year after the twin masterpieces of Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, the Dead maintained a groove more psychedelic in spirit than sound. Although this truncation emphasizes this continuity, it's still possible to hear how the band's first 15 years were a rapid progression while the second 15 were about reliability, but perhaps the most affecting thing about 30 Trips is the simple passing of time. By the end, Jerry's voice sounds rough and fragile, Weir's confidence surges, Lesh's lines are elastic, and the "Drums" showcase for Kreutzmann and Hart turns exploration into schtick -- it's a mix of emotion and show that's endearing and even moving. If you take all 30 trips, the Dead's journey feels long and sweet and unlike anything else in rock. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 09/18/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/grateful-dead-30-trips-around-the-sun-the-definitive-live-story_In6jj.jpg?v=1740698415
bob-dylan-nashville-skyline
Nashville Skyline

Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar); Kenny Buttrey, Charles McCoy, Pete Drake, Norman Blake, Charlie Daniels, Bob Wilson, Johnny Cash. The results are predictable: The band sounds precise, energetic, and lively, but there is a certain spark missing. As brutal as the versions of such songs as "New York State Police" and "Teenage" are, they simply don't measure up to the original recordings, making this album somewhat pointless. It does serve as a nice sampler of the Subs' most notable songs from their first eight albums, which would indicate it's a decent introduction for newcomers. Still, it would seem to be a wiser idea for those newcomers to start with the Singles 1978-1982 anthology. It would be even better to track down the first four Subs albums to hear the original lineup bash out far more bloodthirsty versions of most of these tracks. Albums by Pallbearer, YOB, Bell Witch, and Electric Wizard have garnered exceptional attention for a metal subgenre that's been around...well, forever. Richmond, Virginia's loud-and-proud Windhand, signed with Relapse after Soma, their grimy sophomore album, received rave reviews and made a slew of 2013 year-end lists. Expectations run high for Grief's Infernal Flower. Produced by Jack Endino (Nirvana's Bleach and Soundgarden's Screaming Life), the sound on most of this set is enormous. It may be just a tad less gritty, and the songs are (a bit) tighter and shorter -- there are no half-hour marathons. There is a more expansive sonic approach to the songwriting and vocal production on this date. Vocalist Dorthia Cottrell's commanding presence bends the riff-o-sonic wall of sludge to her will and reveals more subtle post-psych melodies and actual hooks that lurk within them -- check the stellar "Two Urns" and "Crypt Key." Parker Chandler's uber-low, mega-fuzzed bass throb and Ryan Wolfe's drumming govern the instrumental attack, leaving ample opportunity for guitarists Asechiah Bogdan and Garrett Morris to focus on plodding power riffs and spiral around one another in solos on the epic-length tracks. On the blistering "Forest Clouds," Cottrell rides every circular vamp, rising with more power until it all collapses around her. Windhand attempt a wall-plastering psych-blues groove and syncopation simultaneously on "Tanngrisnir." They only partially succeed but they earn points for the attempt. Cottrell has two solo vocal and acoustic guitar numbers here, "Sparrow" and closer "Aition," which stand with Grief's Infernal Flower's best moments even if they seem like outliers. She released a killer self-titled solo album earlier in 2015; these tracks -- equal parts Townes Van Zandt, Conny Ochs, Steve Von Till, and Jeffrey Lee Pierce -- could have come from those sessions. "Hesperus" is the first of two back-to-back 14-minute jams. Despite its glacial-paced riffing, it eventually erupts in a blackout squall of guitar distortion and dissolute drumming. "Kingfisher" begins more abstractly before the doomy stoner vibe grabs center stage, one Sabbath-esque riff at a time. Cottrell is at her most physical here, using her low range to carve a pronounced melody from the guitar-and-bass attack. It's just as menacing but more alluring, which makes the whole thing more sinister. Grief's Infernal Flower is almost doom-by-the-numbers (which should reassure fans), but Endino's production, Cottrell's vocal confidence and lyricism, and the band's willingness to push its grooves into the red, offer an admirable next step. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/18/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/windhand-griefs-infernal-flower_hgxxj.jpg?v=1759345326
