Since then, it has become the longest-running of all holiday TV specials (with, we hope, no end in sight). It's fitting that the grandfather of all Christmas specials features Burl Ives, still remembered warmly by millions as the voice behind the film's narrator, Sam the Snowman. Although this soundtrack bears his name, Ives appears only on a handful of songs: "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "A Holly Jolly Christmas," and "Silver and Gold." The remaining vocals are handled by various cast members: "Jingle Jingle Jingle" features Stan Francis as Santa; "We're a Couple of Misfits" is sung by Billie Mae Richards (the voice of Rudolph) and Paul Soles (the voice of Hermie); "There's Always Tomorrow" is immortalized by Janet Orenstein (as Clarice), and a chorus shares "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year." The real musical genius behind the movie is Johnny Marks, a songwriter who had earlier written the song "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" as well as holiday favorites like "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (which is featured in a medley here). His songs, in the hands of musical director Maury Laws, simply sparkle with Christmas magic. The second half of the soundtrack features instrumental versions of the songs, featuring the Decca Concert Orchestra conducted by Herbert Rehbein. The instrumentals keep the holiday spirit flowing, but it's the equivalent of a long musical intermission (in other words, you'll probably find yourself straightening out candy canes on the tree before long). Few soundtracks hold as many happy memories or contain as much Christmas spirit as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Hardcore fans (who number more than a few) can also purchase the film in DVD format or check out a book from Rick Goldschmit that chronicles the making of the film (with lots of fascinating facts about the film's history). ~ Dave Connolly

Genre: Christmas / Chanukkah

Format: Vinyl

Released: 9/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Burl-Ives-Rudolph-the-Red-Nosed-Reindeer-Original-Soundtrack-and-Music-From_GQOdo.jpg?v=1753993461
bing-crosby-merry-christmas
| Merry Christmas (LP)

Best known as "the Voice of Christmas," Bing Crosby's classic album includes the best-selling single of all time, Irving Berlin's composition "White Christmas" that is synonymous with the legendary crooner.

The storied history of this album goes back to the '40s and the cover and content here represent the original 1955 version, which evolved from the period's 78rpm records. The singer/songwriter remains quintessentially Southern Californian -- her spirit is sunny, her melodies breezy -- but she no longer dresses her songs in beachwear. She's ditched the peasant skirts for stylish black dresses; she's no longer strumming an acoustic guitar; she's singing over densely arranged electronic tracks, some produced by Max Martin and some produced by Babyface, neither known for having much patience with neo-hippie surfer girls. If Caillat were less of a pro, this makeover would come across as forced and awkward, but she's savvy enough to make the transition feel natural. Part of this is due to the inherent warmth in her voice -- it always seems to be singing with a smile, even when she's sliding into sarcasm ("Nice Guys") or sadness ("Try") -- but she's also a fine craftswoman, relying not just on superficial hooks but constructed compositions, a trait that means Gypsy Heart, like all her albums, wears well. It also means that the barely disguised attempts to chase trends -- "Never Gonna Let You Down" bounces to the Mumford & Sons folk syncopation that's practically obligatory in 2014 -- are ingratiating, even if their transparency is no less egregious. That's the key to Colbie Caillat's appeal: she radiates good vibes so strongly, none of her calculated commercial considerations feels cold. And, as the sleekly modern Gypsy Heart proves, her charms are beguiling no matter her setting. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 9/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Colbie-Caillat-GYPSY-HEART_AlneN_875bf33a-7eb2-4d1d-85e3-9b4e247e4440.jpg?v=1758747021
prince-3rdeyegirl-plectrumelectrum
PLECTRUMELECTRUM
Audio Mixers: Jamie Lewis; Chris James ; Ben M?hlethaler; Joshua Welton.
Recording information: Paisley park; Studio One London.
Photographers: Madison Dube; Jesse Draxler.
Arrangers: 3rdEyeGirl; Prince.
A companion record to the solo effort Art Official Age, PlectrumElectrum finds Prince backed by 3rdEyeGirl, the all-female power trio that is a band for the 2010s. If Art Official Age veered toward revamped soul, PlectrumElectrum, as its convoluted title suggests, celebrates guitar freakouts: it's heavy on fuzz tones and pummeling backbeats, taking digressions into spacious jazz fusion and clean funk. Prince doesn't take the lead all that often -- he steps to the mike for the hardest rockers, the exception being "Anotherlove" -- letting Donna Grantis or Ida Nielsen front the softer, quirkier numbers. The carousel of lead vocalists suits the carnivalesque tone of PlectrumElectrum, which feels casually virtuosic as it slides from thick rockers into slow jams before jolting itself to life with a shot of distortion. There are distinct differences from Art Official Age -- there's an elasticity to the rhythms that contrasts with the precision of the beats, 3rdEyeGirl seize any opportunity to blast away the confines of the song so they can simply jam -- but take away the reliance on guitar rock and this album draws from a similar source of slow smooth soul, pop, and hammy rap that feels deliberately divorced from hip-hop. Perhaps you could call this celebration of traditional musicianship old-school, but more than anything PlectrumElectrum feels like it belongs to its own little universe, a place that not only celebrates all of Prince's favorite sounds but his own kinks and eccentricities. If those eccentricities don't feel as strange or startling as they once did, blame that on the curse of being a veteran: he's not exploring new territory but building upon the ground he's already claimed for himself. And if the songs on PlectrumElectrum don't stick the way those on Art Official Age do, it's nevertheless a quiet thrill to hear Prince spar with worthy partners, as he does throughout this record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Prince-3rdeyegirl-PLECTRUMELECTRUM_uDVNR.jpg?v=1759337423
tove-lo-queen-of-the-cloex
QUEEN OF THE CLO(EX)
Recording information: Apmamman; Farplane Studios, Stockholm; The Barn, Stockholm; Warner/Chappell Studios, Stockholm; Wolf Cousins Studio, Stockholm.
Photographer: Johannes Helje.
Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo followed her hit single "Habits (Stay High)" -- a disarmingly vulnerable recounting of all the shocking things she does to numb a painful breakup -- with Queen of the Clouds, a debut album that falls somewhere between Icona Pop's sugar rush hedonism and Sia's moody confessions. A good friend of Icona Pop's Caroline Hjelt (and co-writer of the group's "Ready for the Weekend"), like Sia, Tove originally thought she'd have a better chance at a pop career by penning songs for others than in the spotlight herself. However, her songwriting background ensures that Queen of the Clouds has plenty of hooks, as well as a high-concept approach: she organizes pop's eternal concerns of lust, love, and heartbreak into a set of songs that breaks the span of an entire relationship into thirds. While the spoken-word snippets that introduce each part of the album aren't strictly necessary, the format gives Queen of the Clouds more emotional resonance and balance as it spans seize-the-moment highs such as the fizzy, P!nk-esque "Timebomb," the openness of "The Way That I Am," and the loss of "Thousand Miles." Tove also proves her electro-pop has a similar range with songs that range from bouncy ("Not on Drugs") to sleek (the EDM moves of "Run on Love"). However, it's Tove's frankness that makes her truly distinctive. "Habits (Stay High)," with its tales of going to sex clubs and gorging on Twinkies, is still Queen of the Clouds' standout, although "Moments," where she admits "On the good days I am charming as f*ck," is a close second. By owning her mistakes, she turns them into strengths -- and delivers a winning first album in the process. ~ Heather Phares

Genre: Rock

Format: CD

Released: 9/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Tove-Lo-QUEEN-OF-THE-CLOEX_SUumj_e437f6e8-6689-4a1e-a858-3934c60eacbc.jpg?v=1759027974
oasis-whats-the-story-morning-glory-remastered
Oasis (Whats the Story) Morning Glory? Love and its infinite complexities have always been some of Williams' favorite themes, and they certainly pop up a few times on this double set, but she has just as much (if not more) to say about the world around her this time out, setting one of her father's poems to music as she pleads for "Compassion," spits venom at a dilettante from the perspective of someone living in poverty in "East Side of Town," recounts a real-life tale of justice gone wrong in "West Memphis," and issues a call to action on "Temporary Nature (Of Any Precious Thing)." Williams also gives herself plenty of room to stretch out on Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone, offering 20 songs spread out over two discs and running an hour-and-44-minutes, and despite its epic scale, there seems to be precious little filler here; if these songs sometimes take a while to find their spiritual and emotional center, they invariably get there, and the powerful litanies of "Wrong Number," "Something Wicked This Way Comes," and "Big Mess" mesh comfortably with the implacable rhythm of this music. Williams produced the sessions with Tom Overby and Greg Leisz, and the performances are steeped in deep, satisfying grooves, with Pete Thomas and Davey Faragher of Elvis Costello's Imposters holding down the rhythm on most tracks and Leisz, Stuart Mathis, Bill Frisell, and Tony Joe White among the guitarists who lend their magic to these recordings. Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone is the sound of Lucinda Williams doing what she does best and letting her muse do the speaking, and if that sounds simple, in practice it is and it isn't -- this music is taut and soulful, but also a document of one woman baring her spirit and mind to the world, which has always been the case with her best music, and if this isn't a masterpiece, it's as pure, straightforward, and compelling as anything she's done since Essence. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: Dub
Black Dub generated significant excitement when they released stark, black-and-white videos of their rehearsals and leaked concert footage from a show at Bowery Ballroom in New York. The quartet, comprised of producer Daniel Lanois on guitar and vocals, jazz drummer extraordinaire Brian Blade, session bassist Daryl Johnson, and vocalist/keyboardist Trixie Whitley (daughter of the late great Chris Whitley) make a beguiling, seductive music that blurs rock, soul, blues, gothic Americana, New Orleans funk, and dubwise reggae. The videos portrayed an accomplished group of musicians delivering new originals, a smoking cover of "I'd Rather Go Blind," and a few Lanois' nuggets from older recordings in a bubbling, smoky, passionate yet understated manner. This self-titled debut was mostly written by Lanois save for "Last Time," which is a band composition. Rather than the stark immediacy of the rehearsals, much of this music is draped in Lanois' signature warm, syrupy, murky production; all the edges -- save for those glorious ones in Whitley's voice -- have been rounded off with dense layers of effects and loops. The ballads "I Believe in You," "Surely," "Silverado," and "Nomad" are stellar showcases for Whitley's deeply soulful contralto. She rises above the band and soars, delivering these lyrics as if they are her own; she goes straight to the heart of the listener with that voice, regardless of genre. She stands out here and shines. The mercurial ethereal funk in "Last Time" places Whitley's and Lanois' vocals opposite those of guest Brady Blade, Sr.'s in a weave of bluesy, swampy, narcotic funk. "Ring the Alarm," one of the album's few straight-out rockers, suffers from production excesses: check the video version, this one pales in comparison. The two instrumentals here, "Slow Baby" and "Sirens," are pleasant enough, but seem more like ideas edited from jam sessions rather than full-fledged ones. Still, for a debut, Black Dub is compelling; it gives up its secrets only with repeated listening. There is plenty to move forward with, and hopefully, the band's next project builds upon all that's right here. The love of jazz glimpsed in COURT AND SPARK and THE HISSING OF SUMMER LAWNS is wanton in HEJIRA. The arrangements are loose and the melodies seductively free-flowing. The lyrics, too, have broken free of rigid verse and rhyme structures and tend towards prose poetry. The cloak of introspection that weighs down on much of her work is lighter here; though far from mainstream. Running away from his ornate track record -- his production for Stevie's 2011 record In Your Dreams was typically florid -- Stewart pays respect to Nicks' original songs and period style by keeping things relatively simple while drafting in sympathetic supporting players including guitarists Waddy Wachtel and Davey Johnstone and Heartbreakers Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell. It's certainly not an exacting re-creation of Sound City but Stewart adheres to the slick, hazy feel of supremely well-appointed professional studios, so 24 Karat Gold has a tactile allure. Sonically, it's bewitching -- the best-sounding record she's made since 1983's The Wild Heart but, substance-wise, it's her best since that album, too. If there aren't many remnants of the flinty, sexy rocker of "Stand Back" (the opening "Starshine" is an exception to the rule), there's enough seductive, shimmering soft rock and the emphasis on Laurel Canyon hippie folk-rock feels right and natural. Retrospectively, it's a surprise that Nicks sat on these songs for years, but that only indicates just how purple a patch she had during Fleetwood Mac's glory days. It's a good thing she dug through her back pages and finished these songs, as she's wound up with one of her strongest albums. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/stevie-nicks-24-karat-gold-songs-from-the-vault_to69V.jpg?v=1740712767
kiss-peter-criss-180-gram-vinyl-remastered
Peter Criss (180 Gram Vinyl, Remastered)

Personnel: Peter Criss (vocals, drums, percussion); Bill Cuomo (conductor, keyboards, synthesizer); Stan Penridge (guitar, background vocals); Art Munson, John Tropea, Steve Lukather, Eliot Randall (guitar); Michael Carnahan (saxophone); Richard Gerstein (keyboards); Bill Bodine, Neil Jason (bass); Allan Schwartzerg (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Davey Faragher, Tommy Faragher, Danny Faragher, Anne Sutton, Gordon Gordy, Jimmy Faragher, Vini Poncia, Maxine Dixon, Maxine Willard, Julia Tillman (background vocals). After listening to Rhino Records' reissue of Agent Orange's classic 1981 debut Living in Darkness, that's probably what the listener will be wondering. By incorporating all three musical elements into one, this influential Orange County, CA. band showed that they were a step ahead of the rest of the punk/hardcore pack. By adding seven hard-to-find cuts (including pre-debut singles and an interview from 1981) to the original album, this reissue of prime Agent Orange material is by far their best release, and the most appealing for newcomers to the band. The group gained some attention in the mid-'90s when it became public knowledge that alterna-punks the Offspring were huge fans of the band, which led to speculation that they lifted the Middle Eastern motif contained in Agent Orange's "Bloodstains" for their breakthrough hit "Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)." The comparison was debatable, but A.O. had lots of other great material, some showcased here -- a cover of Dick Dale's "Miserlou," "Too Young to Die," "No Such Thing," and of course the aforementioned "Bloodstains." You'd be hard pressed to find a better compilation of Agent Orange material than this reissue of Living in Darkness. ~ Greg Prato

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/agent-orange-living-in-darkness_tZY2s.jpg?v=1758773708
frank-zappa-apostrophe-vinyl
APOSTROPHE (VINYL)
Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, bass); Tony Duran (guitar); Sugar Cane Harris, Jean-Luc Ponty (violin); Ian Underwood (saxophone); Napoleon Murphy Brock (saxophone, background vocals); George Duke (keyboards); Jack Bruce, Erroneous, Tom Fowler (bass); Jim Gordon, Johnny Guerin, Ralph Humphrey, Aynsley Dunbar (drums); Ruth Underwood (percussion); Ray Collins, Kerry McNabb, Susie Glover, Debbie, Lynn, Ruben Ladron De Guevara, Robert "Frog" Camarena (background vocals).
Engineers include: Steve Desper, Terry Dunavan, Barry Keene.
All songs have been digitally remastered.
One of Frank Zappa's most commercially successful albums, APOSTROPHE is also among his goofiest. The album found its way to the semi-mainstream chiefly on the strength of "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow." As the title of that single indicates, the scatological humor and cheap jokes that are part of Zappa's stock in trade abound here (see also the self-explanatory "Stink-Foot"). Part of Zappa's genius, though, much like that of Gong's Daevid Allen, was to deflate his sophisticated instrumental excursions and conceptual work with lowbrow humor and downright silliness. Nowhere is that process more apparent than on APOSTROPHE.
The typically large band (including violin and horns) that accompanies Zappa here follows him through daunting twists and turns as tempos get turned around and counterpoint riffs bounce off each other at breakneck speed. In the midst of all this instrumental facility, Zappa's satirical side blazes forth, as on "Uncle Remus," which addresses racial strife, and the bluesy "Cosmik Debris," where he casts aspersions on the idea of gurus. This meagerly priced title draws upon the two original Christmas with the Chipmunks volumes that were first issued in the early '60s. The vari-speed novelty was the brainchild of the multimedia mastermind Ross Bagdasarian. While many assumed the Chipmunks moniker was a play on the success of the Beatles, it was actually used as far back as Bagdasarian's hit 45 "Witch Doctor" in 1958. Granted, the three cartoon rodents were fictitious; however, the names Alvin, Simon, and Theodore were inspired by Liberty Records brass Al Bennett (Alvin), Si Waronker (Simon), and engineer Ted Keep (Theodore). Under the direction of Bagdasarian as Dave Seville, the Chipmunks' pre-adolescent high-energy enthusiasm is nothing short of infectious. It yielded a weekly prime time animated television program called The Alvin Show, which aired from October 14, 1961, through September 12, 1962, on CBS-TV. On this disc, the unbridled joy of the season -- as experienced through the eyes of Alvin, Simon, and Theodore -- is coupled with conventional melodies such as "Jingle Bells," "Frosty the Snowman," "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth," and "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town." Of course, no Chipmunks holiday effort would be complete without Bagdasarian's "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)." [For the 2008 edition of the album the grinches at Capitol cut five tracks from the previous reissue's running order, making the 2006 edition the one to track down for maximum Chipmunk holiday enjoyment.] ~ Lindsay Planer

Genre: Christmas / Chanukkah

Format: Vinyl

Released: 9/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Chipmunks--Christmas-with-the-Chipmunks_FHAUg.jpg?v=1759176145
sonny-clark-cool-struttin-lp
Sonny Clark Cool Struttin' [LP]

The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of COOL STRUTTIN' includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
Personnel: Sonny Clark (piano); Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Art Farmer (trumpet); Paul Chambers (acoustic bass); Philly Joe Jones (drums).
Producer: Alfred Lion.
Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jerey on January 5, 1958. Brian Cannon ; Phil Smith ; Tom Sheehan ; Owen Morris; Iain Robertson.
The state of English popular music in the mid-'90s will be looked back upon as a time when groups like Blur, Supergrass and Oasis rode the UK charts with a style (nicknamed Brit-Pop by that country's press) that fused the 1960s pop aesthetic of the Beatles, Kinks and Small Faces with the flamboyance and cocksuredness of T. Rex and the Buzzcocks. But (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? is a more tempered follow-up to Oasis' 1994 debut, DEFINITELY MAYBE, the band having gone from enfant terrible to dreamy romantic this time round. Oasis has also crossed the Atlantic this time; (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY has made the band a major U.S. success.
Toning down the brattiness, Oasis guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher brings minimal orchestration into the mix, while still mining for inspiration in the past. A buzzing amp cues up the opening cut, "Hello," before giving way to a thunderous rocker that credits Gary Glitter as a co-writer by way of a line lifted from his "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again." The innovative use of strings on songs like "Cast No Shadow," "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger" avoids any mawkishness, leaning more towards a melancholy sheen. Such ambitious chance-taking turns "Don't Look Back In Anger" into a grand epic that has singer Liam Gallagher sounding like Ian Hunter to brother Noel's Mick Ronson.
All these external tools do nothing to detract from Oasis' ability to play rock and roll with a religious fervor. The first version of "The Swamp Song" (the untitled track 6) is a bluesy, instrumental rave-up complete with a wailing harmonica that sounds unlike anything they've done before. It's followed by "Some Might Say," a sweeping epic layered with chunky riffs. While new pal Paul Weller's guitar lends some grit to "Champagne Supernova," the best song on MORNING GLORY is "She's Electric," a '90s equivalent to "Itchycoo Park" with the end-chorus of "With A Little Help From My Friends" grafted onto it.

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/oasis-whats-the-story-morning-glory-deluxe-edition-remastered-3-cds_wmYMz.jpg?v=1741060811
the-jayhawks-tomorrow-the-green-grass
Tomorrow the Green Grass
TracksCredits
1 Blue
2 I'd Run Away
3 Miss Williams' Guitar
4 Two Hearts
5 Real Light
6 Over My Shoulder
7 Bad Time
8 See Him on the Street
9 Nothing Left to Borrow
10 Ann Jane
11 Pray for Me
12 Red's Song
13 Ten Little Kids

Genre: Country

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/the-jayhawks-tomorrow-the-green-grass_TYWAD.jpg?v=1749166529
ella-fitzgerald-ella-wishes-you-a-swinging-christmas-1
Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas

Ella Wishes You A Swinging Christmas is a Records & LPs from Ella Fitzgerald

Genre: Holiday

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Ella-Fitzgerald-Ella-Wishes-You-A-Swinging-Christmas_x5dV7.jpg?v=1757006237
santana-caravanserai
Caravanserai

Caravanserai is a Records & LPs from Santana

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

Audio Mixer: Tchad Blake.
Recording information: Axis Chemicals; Axis Studios, North Hollywood, CA; Lightning Sound Studios, Hidden Hills, CA; Sonic Ranch, Tornillo, TX.
Photographer: Eric Ray Davidson .
The very title of Hesitant Alien conjures memories of David Bowie, just like how the album artwork evokes the Thin White Duke's iconic cover for Heroes (which was later repurposed for Bowie's own The Next Day). Such deliberate allusions are Gerard Way's sly nod to his audience, an admission of how he belongs to an art-punk tradition that stretches back several decades, but his first solo effort after the disbandment of My Chemical Romance isn't a re-creation of the glory days of glam. Way does indulge in T. Rex stomps and flirts with Bowie's interstellar swagger -- not to mention his cadence sometimes echoes Eno and he's savvy enough to thread saxophone into the background on "Get the Gang Together" -- but the heart of Hesitant Alien lies in the late '80s and early '90s, the time when all the arty strands of British and American post-punk converged on 120 Minutes. Sometimes Way creates a swirling, circular pastiche, sometimes he creates de facto tributes to individual bands ("Millions" is a dead ringer for prime Stone Roses), the two approaches blending to create a heady rush of sexy, stylish postmodern futurism. The clever thing about Hesitant Alien is, for as much as it consciously references the past, it's a record that never could've been played on college radio in 1990: the razor-thin guitars are too loud, the progressive pomp leans too heavily on '70s concept albums, Way retains the trappings of emo in his heated delivery but not his aesthetic. All this means that for as much as Way refers to other acts, this is a thoroughly original work, a vibrant reflection of all his artistic obsessions. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2014

Palace is a Records & LPs from Rhode & Brown

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

MONTY PYTHON'S (EX) is a Records & LPs from MONTY PYTHON

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/monty-python-monty-pythons-ex_6OkB5.jpg?v=1759419194
diamond-d-diam-piece
Diam Piece

Diam Piece is a Records & LPs from Diamond D

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

Personnel includes: Chuck Schudiner (vocals); James Murphy (guitar); Terry Bulter (bass); Chris Reifert (drums).
When Death entered the 1990s with Spiritual Healing, it was hard to miss the band's tremendous impact on metal. Some credited Death with inventing death metal, but whether or not Death single-handedly created the style, there was no question that countless death metal, thrash, and grindcore bands had been influenced by their blistering sound. The adjective "blistering" certainly describes "Genetic Reconstruction," "Living Monstrosity," and other songs on this high-volume CD, which illustrates Death's ferocious nature. True to form, Death's lyrics are dark, morbid, and pessimistic. But as brutal as this album is (both musically and lyrically), it's important to stress that it isn't as extreme as many of the unmelodic, one-dimensional grindcore releases that were coming out in 1990. Tempos vary, and the songs aren't without harmonic appeal. Spiritual Healing may not have been multi-platinum, but for knowledgeable headbangers in the death metal underground, there was no denying this band's importance. ~ Alex Henderson

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/death-spiritual-healing-reissue_HDyrB.jpg?v=1741076569
boothroyd-idle-hours
Idle Hours
It would be hard to find a better example of Tri Angle's most abrasive, challenging side than Boothroyd's Idle Hours EP. Made with cheap gear for an intentionally brittle, hissy sound, the producer's debut for the label overflows with chopped-up, ultra-compressed, and saturated noise. Boothroyd bookends the EP with its most aggressive tracks: though "NYC" boasts a delicately plucked melody reminiscent of labelmate Forest Swords, its kick drum dissolves into zeroes and ones at the end of each hit, and melancholy pianos are subsumed by sludgy beats. Later, on "Y5," Boothroyd trades that track's layered menace for an exercise in texture, dynamics, and structure as ghostly squeals and more crushing beats circle each other in a way that recalls the Haxan Cloak's Excavation. While the fractured "Skinned" and dubstep-tinged "Colony" provide slight breathers, they cover -- and destroy -- nearly as much sonic ground as the more intense tracks. The change of scenery brought out different sides of her music on her second album Grackle -- named after a bird common to Texas -- some of which are more successful than others. Beanblossom foregoes some of Pith's playful eclecticism to go deeper into her music's witchy, ethereal aspects. At times, Grackle sounds like a cross between Kate Bush and Stevie Nicks, especially on "Carry Me Down," where delicate keyboards and backing vocals hold hands with some surprisingly fiery rock. Later, "Photograph" flickers between romantic and creepy as Beanblossom wails "I'll keep that photograph if you leave now." Tracks such as "Barbara" and "It's Mine" showcase her growing finesse with dynamic shifts as they build from spectral to towering, but occasionally Pith's pithiness is missed. "Grackle," which sounds like it was made out of swirling smoke and black chiffon, is a slow-burning seven minutes laced with graceful strings, but it and "Anthony" (an admittedly nice showcase for Beanblossom's vocal chops) just aren't as captivating as the more concise songs. Often, Ruby Fray's vignettes, like the Beach House-esque bookends "You Should Go" and "Reprise," are more affecting than her epics. If you're looking for pure hip-hop, REFLECTION ETERNAL is for you.

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/talib-kweli-reflection-eteexlp_7FojY.jpg?v=1759287048
talib-kweli-beautiful-struggex
BEAUTIFUL STRUGG(EX)
Talib Kweli, as with the finest artists, is possessed by a love of his medium--in this case, rap and its history. Applying his thoughtful words to music, Kweli revels in hip-hop, and his adoration of the genre is clear in all his work. Each of Kweli's records, whether alone or with Mos Def (as part of Black Star) or Hi-Tek, incorporates hints of melodies past, lines plucked from the performers who preceded him, as well as deeply studied lyrics created by his own fertile mind.
So it is with Kweli's third solo outing, THE BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE, which alludes to the history of many forms of music while the rapper muses eloquently about revolutions and poverty and their relation to war and shattered dreams. Kweli tells an intricate story of struggling, succeeding, and failing on "Broken Glass," and jumps around from one frustration to the next on the ultimately inspirational title track. On the latter, he notes that people dub him a political rapper, when he doesn't even follow politics; rather, he looks to the icons of hip-hop from Ice Cube to De La Soul. Kweli may not aim to be a politically minded hip-hopper, but as an astute observer of life, he can't help but be aware and comment on what he sees. On BEAUTIFUL STRUGGLE its clear that he raps because he lives, and he does it brilliantly.

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/talib-kweli-beautiful-struggex_GGAcP.jpg?v=1758939060
thievery-corporation-sounds-from-the-lp
SOUNDS FROM THE (LP)
Thievery Corporation includes: Rob Garza, Eric Hilton.
Thievery Corporation (producers Eric Hilton and Rob Garza) introduced its sleek, sophisticated brand of down-tempo electronica on 1997's SOUNDS FROM THE THIEVERY HI-FI. Although later offerings by the duo (THE MIRROR CONSPIRACY and THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON) would display greater conceptual and sonic diversity, THIEVERY HI-FI lays the blueprint for everything that would follow. Mixing dub, trip-hop, ambient, and various Latin elements, Thievery Corporation makes deeply textured, genre-crossing chill-out music. (Hilton and Garza show a particular penchant for bossa nova--the album is dedicated to the memory of Antonio Carlos Jobim.)
"2001 Spliff Odyssey" works a pulsing programmed beat that plays host to a battery of voice samples and synthesizer effects, and "Universal Highness" employs a call-and-response vocal tag and staccato trumpet notes over an increasingly layered percussion track. The duo's Latin influence can be heard on "Scene at the Open Air Market," and on the intro to "The Glass Bead Game," while the atmospheric sway of "Manha" conjures up the feel of an Astrud Gilberto tune. They started out with two voices in singer/songwriters Marc Olsen (sp?) and Gary Louris. After Olsen split, Louris spearheaded the band's most angular, least country album THE SOUND OF LIES, but RAINY DAY MUSIC turns the tables yet again by presenting the softest, most acoustic, ballad-oriented side the band has ever shown. Things start out fairly perky with the sparkling, jangly folk-rock of "Stumbling Through the Dark" and the poppy "Tailspin," but after that the melodic acoustic guitars and golden harmony vocals recall nothing so much as vintage Crosby, Stills & Nash. This is obviously no accident, as "Madman," the most overtly CSN-like tune, features a guest appearance by none other than Steve Stills's son Chris. Louris's top-notch singing and winning way with a melody carry through the album brilliantly. If someone's going to represent '70s-style folk-rock in the 21st century, RAINY DAY MUSIC leaves little doubt about the guys to whom the task should fall.

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/the-jayhawks-rainy-day-music-2-lps_gyL7y.jpg?v=1744031392
thievery-corporation-richest-man-in-blp
RICHEST MAN IN B(LP)
Thievery Corporation: Rob Garza, Eric Hilton.
Additional personnel: Emiliana Torrini, Sleepy Wonder & Shinehead, Lou Lou, Pam Bricker, Notch.
Eric Hilton and Rob Garza, the Washington, D.C. duo better known as Thievery Corporation, continue to refine their previously established style on THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON. For their third proper album of new material, they continue to mine a mellow electronica groove with jazz, pop, and world music flavorings mixed in among the expected reggae, soul, and funk elements. The title tune and "The State of the Union" focus heavily on the reggae aspects of Thievery Corporation's sound, while "Liberation Front" bears more of an acid-jazz feel. The closing track "Resolution" (along with a few others) is more in line with that ethereal trip-hop flow for which Hilton and Garza are perhaps best known.
