He has consistently delivered memorable music for some of the funniest movies of the past five years. Shapiro's careful touch has made him a sought-after collaborator for some of Hollywood's leading comedy directors: David Frankel (Prada, Marley), Stiller (Tropic Thunder), John Hamburg (I Love You, Man, Along Came Polly), Mike Judge (Idiocracy) and, most recently, Harold Ramis (Year One). Shapiro, 37, is a rarity in modern film music: a classically trained composer (bachelor's degree from Brown, master's from Juilliard) who, despite commissions for classical works (including a well-received piano concerto in 1999), decided he'd rather be working in film.

Tracklist

A1        The Aldridge Mansion
A2        The Garrett Attack
A3        Never Invited
A4        Distinct Human Form
A5        The Universe Shall Bend
A6        Subway Ghost Attack
A7        Ghost Girl
A8        Mannequins
A9        Ghost In A Box
A10        Dr. Heiss
A11        Ley Lines
B1        Pester The Living
B2 I Will Lead Them All
B3 The Power Of Patty Compels You
B4        The Fourth Ctaclysm
B5        Balloon Parade
B6        Battle Of Times Square
B7        Entering The Mercado
B8        Behemoth
B9        Into The Portal
B10        NY Heart GB

*Audio and/or tracklist may vary slightly from the vinyl version.

Label: MUSIC ON VINYL
Rel. A Million *
After a few years spent working on things other than Bon Iver, time spent sorting out heavy personal issues, and a radical rethink of the style that launched Justin Vernon's project to the upper reaches of indie folk popularity, the always searching musician returned in 2016 with an album that redefined Bon Iver in dramatic fashion. 22, A Million is a complicated and intricate record that features chopped-up lyrics, altered vocals, sped-up samples, alternately shimmering and clipped keyboards, treated saxophones, and the occasional gently strummed guitar. Through most of the challenging album, Vernon and his collaborators create miniature structures of sound and space, letting his vocals drift and cascade through sparse and fractured constructs like a lost soul wandering through empty futuristic streets. It's a long way from intimate folk songs recorded in a remote Wisconsin cabin. In the music, one can hear the influence of Vernon's occasional collaborator Kanye West, especially on the mutated R&B tracks like "10 d E A T h b R E a s T ? ?" and "33 'God'," where his vocals take on a rap-like cadence, but also in the sense of grandeur and bombast intermittently found there and elsewhere. In direct contrast are the songs that sound very inward and emotionally bleak and twisted, possibly reflecting some of Vernon's struggles along the way. The desperate "715 - CR??KS," which features nothing but a choir of Auto-Tuned Vernons singing aching lyrics that sound like they're being ripped from the deepest, darkest corner of his tortured soul, is maybe the darkest track. In yet more contrast, a few songs on the album retain much of the hushed acoustic feel of his earlier albums, but with weird electronics and tricks around the edges. The beautiful "29 #Strafford APTS" is a folk song at its core, but he adds altered vocals, queasily pitched saxophones, and distorted electronic tones to provide some drama to the song. He does similar things to the album-ending piano ballad "00000 Million" and the tense, almost ambient "21 M??N WATER," turning them from typically sad Bon Iver songs into something weird and oddly more affecting. The only track on the album that falls short of the standard set elsewhere is "8 (circle)," which makes the mistake of being a little too earnestly straightforward and too much like a Bruce Hornsby song. This was probably the one that needed the most manipulation, and it's the one that gets the least. One little misstep can't keep 22, A Million from being a return to form, even as it turns the established form on its head and gives it a spin. It's clear that the upheavals in Vernon's life and music are a matched set; he turns his pain into art as he does a deep dive into exploration of technique and sound. It's an impressive feat of reinvention that manages to keep Vernon's emotional core fully intact no matter how far the music strays from established Bon Iver territory. ~ Tim Sendra

Genre: Rock and Pop

Format: Cassette

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Bon-Iver-22-A-Million-_Sd9pi_25e264e0-7111-46d7-95f4-25cc04b62ee2.jpg?v=1759101396
nitty-gritty-dirt-band-circlin-back-celebrating-50-years
CIRCLIN BACK-CELEBRATING 50 YEARS
Personnel: Jeff Hanna (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, washboard); Jackson Browne (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Jerry Jeff Walker, Jimmy Ibbotson, John Prine, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic guitar); Sam Bush (vocals, mandolin, fiddle); Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle); Jimmie Fadden (vocals, harmonica, drums); Bob Carpenter (vocals, accordion, keyboards); John McEuen (acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar, mandolin, fiddle); Jerry Douglas (lap steel guitar, dobro); Byron House (upright bass, electric bass).
Audio Mixer: Michael Davis .
Recording information: Ryman Auditorium, Nashville, TN (09/14/2015).
Friends always meant something special to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band -- their 1972 breakthrough, Will the Circle Be Unbroken, was filled with them -- so it only makes sense that the group rounded up a bunch of pals for a 50th anniversary concert held at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on September 14, 2015. Released a year later, Circlin' Back: Celebrating 50 Years does indeed play like a celebration. Revisiting an equal portion of hits and traditional tunes, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sound as deep and wise as the Nashville veterans did when they guested on Will the Circle Be Unbroken, but the nice thing about the Circlin' Back concert is that it takes into account the smoother hits the band had in the '80s: Rodney Crowell and Alison Krauss sit in on "An American Dream" and Jimmy Ibbotson plays on "Fishin' in the Dark." Here, they're presented in stripped-down arrangements that nevertheless echo the soft rock gloss of the hit singles, and when combined with rollicking bluegrass, rustic folk, and straight-ahead country, it results in a full portrait of what the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is all about. Prine has given the same approach another try 17 years later, and though For Better, or Worse isn't quite as good as his first go-round with this concept, it's still a fine collection of songs from a man who knows a bit about crafting a tune. The greatest strength of For Better, or Worse is also one of its weaknesses -- Prine himself. Prine was nearly 70 when he recorded this album, and his voice has grown worse for wear (his battle with throat cancer in the '90s and a more recent brush with lung cancer haven't helped). But if he sounds his age on these tracks, he also spins that to his advantage; on numbers like "Who's Gonna Take the Garbage Out," "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke," and "I'm Telling You," he sounds like an wily old rascal who's seen it all and has plenty to tell. Prine's female co-stars are all in better shape than he is in terms of their instruments, and across the board they sound happy and honored to be working with the great man. Alison Krauss, Lee Ann Womack, Kacey Musgraves, Susan Tedeschi, Miranda Lambert, and Kathy Mattea all bring their A game to these sessions, and help to give Prine a boost when he needs it. Of course, the best tracks are the ones where Prine teams up with Iris DeMent; the two singers have long shown they're simpatico, and hearing them together on "Who's Gonna Take the Garbage Out" and "Mr. & Mrs. Used to Be" is a delight. Add in a studio band that delivers the classic Nashville honky tonk sound these songs demand, and a closing solo performance of "Just Waitin'," where Prine makes Luke the Drifter's lyrics sound like something he could have written himself, and you get a fine latter-day album from a seminal artist. It's still troubling that one of America's best songwriters seems to have lost the desire to pen new material, but For Better, or Worse shows John Prine hasn't lost his spirit as a performer. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/john-prine-for-better-or-worse_TxcAB.jpg?v=1758948628
bob-weir-blue-mountain-gatefold-lp-jacket-2-lps
Blue Mountain (Gatefold LP Jacket) (2 Lp's)
Bob Weir never stopped making music but he did back away from his solo career after Heaven Help the Fool, a misbegotten 1978 effort that found the Grateful Dead guitarist attempting to dabble in the sun-splashed surfaces of SoCal soft rock. After that, he retreated to the boogying Bobby & the Midnites, a side project that was abandoned after the Dead scored a hit in 1987 with In the Dark, then after the death of Jerry Garcia, he wandered through several jam bands, settling on RatDog as a vehicle for whatever songs he had. All of this is to say that when 2016's Blue Mountain is called Weir's best album since his 1972 debut Ace -- and it is, without question -- there simply isn't much competition. That said, Blue Mountain does display a level of conscious craft that is rare not only among Weir albums but also the Dead. Credit producer Josh Kaufman -- an associate of the National, who released a weighty Dead tribute called Day of the Dead earlier in 2016 -- and singer/songwriter Josh Ritter, who both worked with Weir to create a lovely, meditative salute to the "cowboy songs" dear to the guitarist's heart. Usually, Bobby's cowboy songs in a Dead set provided a bit of levity but Blue Mountain floats wistfully, sometimes seeming sweet, sometimes seeming sad, but always offering some rustic comfort. It helps that Kaufman dodges the austerity of Rick Rubin's stark recordings for Johnny Cash, nor does he indulge in the murk of Daniel Lanois' collaborations with Bob Dylan: instead, he finds a balance between simple and spacy, a blend that suits Weir well. Against this backdrop -- sometimes consisting of no more than acoustic guitar, sometimes a warm wash of guitar -- Weir sounds weathered and warm, reflective but not mired in nostalgia, not even when he's reviving trail songs or playing with American myths. In that sense, Blue Mountain is very much an extension of his work with the Grateful Dead, particularly Workingman's Dead and American Beauty: he's tapping into legends, then spinning them for the present day. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/bob-weir-blue-mountain-gatefold-lp-jacket-2-lps_SxJRu.jpg?v=1744734671
aubrie-sellers-new-city-blues
NEW CITY BLUES
Personnel: Aubrie Sellers (background vocals); Josh Grange (guitar, steel guitar); Park Chisolm (guitar, banjo); Adam Wright (guitar, ukulele, harmonica, piano, background vocals); Chris Coleman (guitar, keyboards, percussion); Jason Goforth (lap steel guitar, harmonica); Fred Eltringham (drums, percussion); Jason Sellers, Dani Flowers, Grant Vogelfanger, Ice Ann Womack, Frank Rischie (background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Jason Lehning.
Recording information: House of Blues Studio, Nashville, TN; Ronnie's Place; Sound Stage Studios.
Photographer: Allister Ann.
When pushing her 2016 debut New City Blues, Aubrie Sellers dubbed her sound "garage country" -- not a bad description of her world-view, which is constructed equally from noisy rock swagger and Nashville classicalism. There's a tension between these two extremes and Sellers' sweet, placid voice -- which, it has to be said, occasionally resembles the timbre of her mother Lee Ann Womack, even if the two tackle songs quite differently -- takes on different dimensions according to her arrangements. When things are either gnarled or spooky, she cuts against the guitars, providing a compelling contrast, but when things soften, she enhances her hushed surroundings. In both cases, her unaffected delivery -- not flat but rather direct, lacking any sense of showboating -- proves quietly compelling, the foundation from which New City Blues is built. One of the best qualities of this debut is its construction, from the production of Frank Liddell -- best known for his work with Miranda Lambert and also Sellers' stepfather -- to the songs themselves. Perhaps Sellers succumbs to the temptation to be a little bit too on the nose -- "Magazines," her broadside against media-fabricated standards, hits every expected mark -- but her execution is still sharp and when all the gears kick in, New City Blues is exceptional: soulful, smart, and unpredictable, Americana music that doesn't feel beholden to tradition even when it embraces it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/aubrie-sellers-new-city-blues_6PEQa.jpg?v=1759264603
sting-dream-of-the-bluelp
DREAM OF THE BLUE(LP
Personnel: Sting (vocals, guitar, bass); Branford Marsalis (saxophone, percussion); Frank Opolko (trombone); Kenny Kirkland (keyboards); Danny Quatrochi (Synclavier synthesizer, background vocals); Darryl Jones (bass); Omar Hakim (drums); Eddy Grant (congas); Dolette McDonald, Janice Pendarvis, Pete Smith, Elliot Jones, Jane Alexander, Vic Garbarini, The Nannies Chorus, Rosemary Purt, Stephanie Crewson, Joe Sumner, Kate Sumner, Michael Sumner (background vocals).
Personnel: Sting (vocals, guitar, bass); Branford Marsalis (saxophone, percussion); Frank Opolko (trombone); Kenny Kirkland (keyboards); Danny Quatrochi (Synclavier synthesizer, background vocals); Darryl Jones (bass); Omar Hakim (drums); Eddy Grant (congas); Dolette McDonald, Janice Pendarvis, Pete Smith, Elliot Jones, Jane Alexander, Vic Garbarini, The Nannies Chorus, Rosemary Purt, Stephanie Crewsdon, Joe, Kate, Michael Sumner (background vocals).
Sting had a lot to prove on his first post-Police effort, and he proved himself up to the task of establishing a distinctive identity as a solo artist. Ballard's collection of the same title. "Notes Towards a Mental Breakdown," one of the chapters in the Ballard book, would have been just as apt an inscription on an album that looks more like a mid-'80s 12" designed by Neville Brody than anything classified as hip-hop. Old comrade Paul White produces two-thirds of the tracks, lending gnarled, sometimes clanging and blasting rhythms that complement Brown's elevated levels of dread and anxiety and slightly reduced amount of vulgar mischief. Brown spends most of his time looking darkly inward. In that berserk yet lucid high pitch, he raps about being more desperate to score than his clients: "Slice your tomato if you owe us for the lettuce/Runnin' through the D sorta like Jerome Bettis." He depicts himself as a vice-addled, teeth-grinding paranoiac with no soul or hope, and that summarizes only the first three cuts. The outward-looking material is just as biting. In "Today," the track that most exemplifies the album's title, Brown pithily specifies observed struggles and atrocities -- hustling to pay for diapers, the dodging of bullets from murderous civilians and authority, the prison-industrial complex -- as he references OutKast. No such dread is in "Dance in the Water," the album's only true break from the hellscapes. Over the brawling tribal Pulsallama rhythm that it takes to dance to what he has to live through, Brown paraphrases Parliament's "Aqua Boogie" as he outlines a new workout plan -- minus a proposition, one technically clean enough to be applied by youngsters. Guest appearances are kept to a judicious few. Kendrick Lamar provides a verse and the hook on "Really Doe," a knocking Black Milk production that also features Ab-Soul and Earl Sweatshirt. Brown's meeting with Cypress Hill's B-Real is expectedly pinched and faded. Most symbiotic is "From the Ground Up," decaying funk with Kelela in dreamlike Janet Jackson mode. Until the 2009 release of the box set The Beatles in Mono, all of the Fab Four's mono mixes were out of print. That's not the case with the Rolling Stones. Most of their '60s albums -- released on Decca in the U.K., London in the U.S. -- found mono mixes sneaking onto either the finished sequencing or various singles compilations, so the 2016 box The Rolling Stones in Mono only contains 56 heretofore unavailable mono mixes among its 186 tracks. To complicate things further, the box -- which runs 15 discs in its CD version, 16 LPs in its vinyl incarnation -- sometimes contains both the British and American releases of a particular title (Out of Our Heads and Aftermath), while others are available in only one iteration (Between the Buttons is only present in the U.K. version). All this is for the sake of expedience: this is the easiest way to get all the mono mixes onto the box with a minimal amount of repetition. To that end, there's a bonus disc called Stray Cats -- with artwork that plays off the censored plain white cover art for the initial pressing of Beggars Banquet -- collecting the singles that never showed up on an official album, or at least any of the albums that made the box. Along with the odd decision to have the CD sleeves be slightly larger than a mini-LP replica (they're as big as a jewel box, so they're larger than a shrunk vinyl sleeve, a size that's rarely seen in other releases), this is the only quibble on what is otherwise an excellent set. The sound -- remastered again after the 2002 overhaul for hybrid SACDs -- is bold and colorful, with the earliest albums carrying a wallop and the latter records feeling like they're fighting to be heard in two separate channels and all the better for it. If nothing here provides a revelation -- none of the mixes are radically different, the way that some Beatles mono sides are -- this nevertheless is the best the Rolling Stones have sounded on disc (or on vinyl) and there's considerable care in this package, from the replications of the sleeves to the extensive notes from David Fricke. Plus, hearing the Stones in mono winds up being a hot wire back toward the '60s: this feels raw and vibrant, as alive as the band was in the '60s. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 9/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/the-rolling-stones-rolling-stones-in-mo_YqZ50.jpg?v=1759044421
soft-cell-the-art-of-falling-apart
The Art Of Falling Apart
Full title: The Art Of Falling Apart.
This 1999 reissue contains bonus tracks not included on the original release.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
The title is more than a clever rhyme. An air of yearning runs through "Follow You Follow Me," a romantic yarn that also became Genesis' first American Top 30 hit.

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/genesis-and-then-there-were-three_fRuaR.jpg?v=1759190017
genesis-invisible-touch-1
Invisible Touch
Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass); Tony Banks (keyboards, synthesizer, bass).
Recorded at the Farm, Surrey, England in 1985 & 1986.
When Genesis reconvened to record 1986's INVISIBLE TOUCH, Phil Collins had a thriving solo career in both music and film, Tony Banks was recording movie scores, and Mike Rutherford was doing well in Mike & the Mechanics. Coupled with frontman/drummer Collins' burgeoning solo career and the emergence of MTV, the band soon gained a higher profile in the eyes of the record buying public. Five years in the making, the album has the sound of a pop album that is well written and performed, painstakingly put together, and slickly and smartly produced. Maroon 5 have come a long way from the grunge-rock flavor of their tenure as Kara's Flower's (the band's first incarnation).

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2016

Best Sellers: Top Seller

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Bon-Iver-22-A-Million-Digital-Download_3XwHS.jpg?v=1741792789
sully-erna-hometown-life
HOMETOWN LIFE
Personnel: Sully Erna (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, percussion); Tim Theriault (vocals, guitar); Chris Lester (vocals, acoustic guitar); Irina Chirkova (cello); Chris Decato (piano, synthesizer); David Stefanelli (drums, percussion).
Audio Mixer: Dave Fortman .
Recording information: GSHQ Derry, NH.
Photographer: Paris Visone.
Like light shining through the clouds after a storm, Sully Erna's solo sophomore outing Hometown Life is bright, comforting, and uplifting. A familiar (and familial) team has once again joined Erna in the studio: in addition to backing band Chris Lester, Tim Theriault, and Chris Decato, other players who helped with Avalon have also returned, including Irina Chirkova, who infuses the album with her cello swells, and Lisa Guyer, who provides backing vocals and contributes another highlight duet on "Forever My Infinity." New faces include drummer David Stefanelli and songwriter Zac Malloy (Daughtry, Skillet, Tim McGraw) who injects a little Nashville warmth to "Your Own Drum" and "Different Kind of Tears." One guest warrants special mention: Erna's father, Salvatore Sr., whose trumpet lends a cool bluesy vibe to the toe-tapping jam "Turn It Up!" All of these studio guests make Hometown Life feel like an extended jam session among loved ones. The ominous "Living Sin" features one of Lake's nastiest vocals, and the title cut ranks among ELP's finest pseudo-classical moments.

Genre: Rock

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2016

The Best Of King Curtis (180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl/Limited Anniversary Edition) is a Records & LPs from King Curtis

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/king-curtis-the-best-of-king-curtis-180-gram-audiophile-vinyllimited-anniversary-edition_IR3vD.jpg?v=1759159166
temple-of-the-dog-temple-of-the-dog-1
TEMPLE OF THE DOG -
Temple Of The Dog: Chris Cornell (vocals, banjo, harmonica); Stone Gossard, Mike McCready (guitar); Jeff Ament (bass); Matt Cameron (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Eddie Vedder (vocals); Rick Parashar (piano, organ).
Producers: Temple Of The Dog, Rick Parashar.
Recorded at London Bridge Studios, Seattle, Washington from November to December, 1990.
Personnel: Chris Cornell (vocals, banjo, harmonica); Mike McCready (guitar); Stone Gossard (acoustic guitar, slide guitar); Matt Cameron (drums, percussion).
Audio Mixer: Brendan O'Brien .
Recording information: London Bridge Studios, Seattle, WA (11/1990-12/1990).
Photographers: Lance Mercer; Jeff Ament; Josh Taft.
Featuring members of Soundgarden and what would soon become Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog's lone eponymous album might never have reached a wide audience if not for Pearl Jam's breakout success a year later. In turn, by providing the first glimpse of Chris Cornell's more straightforward, classic rock-influenced side, Temple of the Dog helped set the stage for Soundgarden's mainstream breakthrough with Superunknown. Nearly every founding member of Pearl Jam appears on Temple of the Dog (including the then-unknown Eddie Vedder), so perhaps it isn't surprising that the record sounds like a bridge between Mother Love Bone's theatrical '70s-rock updates and Pearl Jam's hard-rocking seriousness. What is surprising, though, is that Cornell is the dominant composer, writing the music on seven of the ten tracks (and lyrics on all). Keeping in mind that Soundgarden's previous album was the overblown metallic miasma of Louder Than Love, the accessibly warm, relatively clean sound of Temple of the Dog is somewhat shocking, and its mellower moments are minor revelations in terms of Cornell's songwriting abilities. It isn't just the band, either -- he displays more emotional range than ever before, and his melodies and song structures are (for the most part) pure, vintage hard rock. In fact, it's almost as though he's trying to write in the style of Mother Love Bone -- which makes sense, since Temple of the Dog was a tribute to that band's late singer Andrew Wood. Not every song here is directly connected to Wood; once several specific elegies were recorded, additional material grew quickly out of the group's natural chemistry. As a result, there's a very loose, jam-oriented feel to much of the album, and while it definitely meanders at times, the result is a more immediate emotional impact. The album's strength is its mournful, elegiac ballads, but thanks to the band's spontaneous creative energy and appropriately warm sound, it's permeated by a definite, life-affirming aura. That may seem like a paradox, but consider the adage that funerals are more for the living than the dead; Temple of the Dog shows Wood's associates working through their grief and finding the strength to move on. On their 18th album, prog rockers Marillion don't seem to care, and they have nothing to lose and no one to account to but themselves. FEAR is an acronym for "Fuck Everybody and Run." Two of its three lengthy, multi-part suites ("El Dorado" and "The New Kings") are overtly political statements that look at England and the calamitous state of the world not only observationally but experientially. Topical songs have been part of the band's catalog as far back as 1984's "Fugazi," and have shown up as recently as the multi-part "Gaza," from 2012's Sounds That Can't Be Made (the latter was perhaps an impetus for this record). The centerpiece, "The Leavers," is an inside view of life on the road, the strain it places on relationships, and how tenuous one's connection to the world can become as a result. There are also three independent tracks that evolve from the suites.
The first section of "El Dorado" commences as a reverie on an England at once exactly the same but eerily and disturbingly different. As guitarist Steve Rothery and keyboardist Mark Kelly urge vocalist Steve Hogarth on in the second section, as he laments the pursuit of capital as more deadly than plutonium, drummer Ian Mosely and bassist Pete Trewavas offer a progression reminiscent of Pink Floyd's "Any Colour You Like" before the band opens up and Hogarth soars. The fourth section broodingly then thunderously reflects on the tolls of war, nationalism, religious fanaticism, and environmental decay. Amazingly, it's not preachy, but deeply personal. Kelly's orchestral keyboard stylings are brilliant. The hinge cut, "Living in Fear," is the catchiest thing here, with an anthemic, sweeping chorus, and a stinging guitar in the bridge with a hook that is almost pop. Throughout its four sections, "The Leavers" weaves from the gently melodic to the majestic. Hogarth's lyrics have matured, delivering deep insight into the melancholy state of being the protagonist inhabits, as the trace of Radiohead's influence that slips in and out of the mix offers a poignant sense of alienation and dislocation. "The New Kings" is the knottiest, most intense track on the set. Over 16 minutes long, it's a scathing, sarcastic takedown of the new political power brokers: Corporate overlords whose cynicism is a virus. Throughout its four parts it shifts in tempo, key, and form, wafting, hovering, and power rocking through to an apocalyptic conclusion.
Fans of the musical direction Marillion pursued during the '90s on Brave and This Strange Engine will find much to enjoy on FEAR. It requires repeated listening to fully absorb, but the payoff is easily the band's most consistent, inspiring date since 2004's Marbles. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2016

Personnel: Matt Taylor (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Brooks Nielsen (vocals); Kyle Straka (guitar); David Ralicke (saxophone); Lee Pardini, Kyle Mullarky (keyboards); Dan Horne (bass guitar); Richard Gowen (drums, percussion).
Audio Mixers: Shawn Everett; Ben Baptie.
Recording information: The Pump House, Topanga Canyon, CA.
Photographer: Pamela Littky.
The follow-up to 2014's demented Chinese Fountain, the propulsive City Club does away with the genre-hopping, "beach goth" aesthetic of prior outings, and installs a new, more streamlined foundation that favors punchy synths and a newly funked-up rhythm section. While the Growlers have always been a shifty bunch, it's hard not to attribute a great deal of this sea change to producer Julian Casablancas, who applies a significant amount of Strokes-ian swagger to the 11-track set. That cocksure, backbeat, and overdriven vocals-heavy style serves tracks like "City Club," "I'll Be Around," "Rubber & Bone," and "Speed Living" well, applying some much appreciated tightening to the band's spirited but ramshackle brand of nervy west coast psych-pop. However, in ditching so much of the sonic weirdness, the Growlers seem less inclined to go against the tide with their songwriting, resulting in something that feels like it has more in common with a Casablancas solo LP than it does the MGMT/Flaming Lips/Unknown Mortal Orchestra freakouts of yore. Still, there is a definite pulse that drives these songs, and while the band may have dumped their empties into the campfire and headed inland, they're still willing to stay up until the wee hours. City Club may not be what fans were expecting, but it's by far the Growlers' most immediate and accessible collection of songs to date. ~ James Christopher Monger

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2016

Black Eyed Peas: Will.I.Am (vocals, Wurlitzer piano, Clavinet, Moog synthesizer, programming); Apl.De.Ap (vocals, programming); Fergie, Taboo (vocals).
Additional personnel: Justin Timberlake, Jamie Gomez, Allen Pineda, Dante Santiago, Jacobi Shaddix, Debbie Nova (vocals); Tobin (guitar, bass); George Pajon Jr., J. Skyzoo confidently reflects on his dreams but stays grounded in reality; "less dreaming, more living," as he states on "Innocent Ambition." Brown generally sticks to hard-hitting breakbeats and heavy drum machines, with a thick layer of vinyl crackle coating several tracks. "On the Stretch & Bob Show" simulates a late-night freestyle on the massively influential Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show, which ran throughout the '90s on Columbia University station WKCR and helped launch the careers of nearly every successful New York-based hip-hop act from that time period. The track starts out with samples from Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito introducing a guest, with Skyzoo's voice spliced in, before a slamming "Funky Drummer" break kicks in and he delivers a raw, off-the-dome rap. Brown is skilled at taking lighter sounds (such as the Carpenters sample on "Spoils to the Victor") and pairing them with harder beats without sounding jarring. The production certainly evokes N.Y.C. legends such as Large Professor and DJ Premier, as well as Detroit's J Dilla and his disciples, but it never feels like a stuck-in-time retro exercise. James Goodwin.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/bob-weir-blue-mountain_AB65i_3ecbc48c-a890-470c-9b1c-e8d1f38617a4.jpg?v=1759353075
steven-price-suicide-squad-original-score
SUICIDE SQUAD - ORIGINAL SCORE

SUICIDE SQUAD - ORIGINAL SCORE is a Records & LPs from Steven Price

Genre: Soundtracks

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/steven-price-suicide-squad-original-score_KKNJC.jpg?v=1759262337
jimi-hendrix-machine-gun-jimi-hendrix-the-fillmore-ea
MACHINE GUN JIMI HENDRIX THE FILLMORE EA
Well, this is something serious Hendrix collectors have been waiting for. Band of Gypsys famously played a total of four shows 12/31/69 and 1/1/70 at the Fillmore East (two shows each night). This is the complete first set from the first night; their debut live show. Although the original Band of Gypsys album was compiled from the second night, it wasn't because there weren't amazing performances to choose from on the first night. The first couple songs are a bit rough around the edges, but when Jimi goes deep blues with "Hear My Train a Comin'," he really starts feeling it and turns in an absolutely amazing version (that's why it was previously released on Band of Gypsys 2 and Live at the Fillmore East). "Machine Gun" is another stunner. There are significant differences to the lyrics, and the structure of the song is different as well (Billy Cox says both Jimi and Buddy Miles were doing things that weren't done in rehearsals). "Bleeding Heart" is another amazing blues performance leading into two songs that were almost never performed live: "Earth Blues" and "Burning Desire." Throughout the set, the band is absolutely locked in. They aren't just playing; they're clearly listening to each other and Hendrix turns in some scorching guitar. The most interesting thing might be the realization of how much of these sets and songs was improvised by the band, as shown by the differences in "Machine Gun" from night to night. Eddie Kramer deserves credit for a truly excellent mix (and probably some judicious editing on "Changes"). It's not really fair to compare Machine Gun to Band of Gypsys since one is a largely unedited complete performance and the other is the best cuts selected from a couple shows. That said, there are performances here that rival those of the original Band of Gypsys album, and hearing Jimi on his game with great sound will always be welcomed. ~ Sean Westergaard

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/30/2016

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/jimi-hendrix-machine-gun-jimi-hendrix-the-fillmore-ea_ClHJm.jpg?v=1759275641
