Strangely though, Mayday Parade isn't all that different from Anywhere But Here. The most notable change is that the songs on their third outing were written solely by the band. However, with the same production team behind their sound, the same bouncy four-chord blueprint, and the same prevalence for soft verses vs. loud choruses, the changes behind the curtain are barely noticeable. It does seem that the band is more aggressive and Derek Sanders is more heartfelt with his delivery, which is a major selling point for the group. Then comes the rejoinder: who cares? Filled with complex guitar fingerwork, aural synth embellishment, and spiraling arrangements that recall everything from King Crimson to More Songs About Building and Food-era Talking Heads to later work from bands like Fugazi (especially The Argument) and Juno, Highly Refined Pirates is a trip through what's great about newer indie rock that doesn't sound like it's trying to be punk without the danger. Many songs on Highly Refined Pirates float ethereally above their conventionally driving drum and guitar lines, and pack a serious lyrical punch to boot. Such as \"Get Me Naked 2: Electric Boogaloo\" -- comedy! -- which boasts one of the coolest choruses ever committed to memory (\"You said, 'My life's like a bad movie'\/I said, 'That's true of all of us'\/You said 'I've got to wake up so f**king early'\/I said 'Maybe the director's turned on us'). Or \"Let's Play Guitar in a Five-Guitar Band,\" a dense collection of echo-heavy vocals, light arpeggiation, distant distortion, and enough hammer-ons to make Eddie Van Halen proud. But the greatest thing about this Minus the Bear album is that it doesn't let its sonic complexity go to its head. Each of Highly Refined Pirates' songs is filled with tongue-in-cheek lyrical wordplay (like that cited above) or entitled with toss-off lines from Paul Verhoeven's outer space soap opera, Starship Troopers (samples: \"You Kill Bugs Good, Man\" or \"Damn Bugs Whacked Him, Johnny\"). Dylan decided it was a project too big for one man so he recruited a number of like-minded artists to turn these words into songs, choosing artists with some measure of debt to Williams no matter their purported stylistic designation. That said, it is the country singers -- Alan Jackson, Vince Gill and Rodney Crowell, Merle Haggard -- who, along with Dylan, create songs that stay true to Williams' melodies and aesthetic, Haggard tackling a religious text, Gill and Crowell reviving Hank's midsong recitation, and Jackson effortlessly evoking classic postwar honky tonk. These are songs whose structure and sound are right in line with Hank's classic work, but the rest of The Lost Notebooks is a little more malleable, at least in terms of arrangement. Jack White and Norah Jones produce work that's recognizably their own -- White's voice cracks over a ramshackle rhythm, Jones sighs like a lullaby -- yet these feel like reinterpretations of old Hank tunes, as does Levon Helm's woolly \"You'll Never Again Be Mine,\" with only Sheryl Crow's \"Angel Mine\" and Jakob Dylan's \"Oh, Mama, Come Home\" edging close to melodies that you'd hear on their respective solo records. Even then, Crow and the younger Dylan hardly play loose with the material; they treat it with respect but not undue reverence, something that unites all the artists here. On the surface of things, this is a bit of an odd task, taking left-behind lyrics from one of the great songwriters and breathing life into them. Clearly as influenced by, say, Black Sabbath as the nascent Seattle scene was at the same time, guitarist J. Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow (whose \"Poledo\" is the album's weirdest song), and drummer Murph temper the sludgy guitar roar with speedier tempos, better melodies, and more incisive lyrics than most of the Seattlites could ever master. The result is spellbinding, and, unlike most indie albums of its era, this record doesn't sound the least bit dated. \"Raisans,\" \"Little Fury Things,\" and the aptly-named \"Sludgefest\" are the archetypal tracks, but there's not one dud to be found here. A classic.\n(Note: Most CD reissues include a contemporaneous B-side, a jokey but surprisingly good cover of the Cure's \"Just Like Heaven\" that also appears on the FOSSILS compilation. This wasn't entirely an accident, since Nirvana did release a record with a shiny surface, no matter how humongous the guitars sounded. For all the anguish on Nevermind, it's bracing because Kurt Cobain exorcizes his demons through evocative wordplay and mangled screams, and because the band has a tremendous, unbridled power that turns pain into pure catharsis. It's impossible not to speculate about some things, like the track titled \"Don't Cry,\" the looped \"broken and blue\" from a version of \"Walk on By,\" the presence of Eddie Kendricks singing \"My people, hold on,\" or the fact that there are 31 tracks, a possible signal that Dilla survived a little longer than he expected. Then again, for every possible message, there are two or three elements that could've been designed to throw any analysis off its trail. After all, if there's one single image that the disc brings to mind, it's that of Dilla goofing off, having fun with some of his favorite records, and messing with some heads in the process. (And you could probably make the album's title out to be a metaphor for the circle of life, but sometimes a donut is just a donut.) Armed with sources that are either known to novice sample spotters or only the most seasoned diggers -- surprisingly, the former greatly outweighs the latter -- Dilla's also just as likely to leave his samples barely touched as he is to render them unrecognizable. It's fitting that Motown echoes, a predominant theme, are often felt, from the use of Dionne Warwick's Holland-Dozier-Holland-written \"You're Gonna Need Me\" (on \"Stop\"), to the shifting waves of percussion plucked from Kendricks' \"People... Hold On\" (on \"People\"), to the Stevie-like piano licks within Kool \u0026amp; the Gang's \"The Fruitman\" (\"The Diff'rence\"). Most of the tracks fall into the 60-90 second range. It's easy to be overwhelmed, or even put off, by the rapid-fire sequence, but it's astounding how so many of the sketches leave an immediate impression. By the third or fourth listen, what initially came across as a haphazard stream of slapped-together fragments begins to take the shape of a 44-minute suite filled with wistful joy. Like everything else Dilla has ever done, Donuts is not defining; in fact, elements of its approach bare the apparent influence of Jaylib collaborator Madlib.
