On Pink's first album, she was squarely in the R&B/pop mode, but her follow-up contained the single "Just Like a Pill," a fierce rocker that pointed toward a new direction. TRY THIS moves Pink further into rock territory; where its predecessor contained collaborations with former 4 Non Blondes singer Linda Perry, TRY THIS is dominated by songs co-written with (and produced by) Rancid vocalist Tim Armstrong. There are a couple of R&B-oriented songs to round things out (not to mention a steamy duet with notoriously nasty female rapper Peaches), but, for the most part, Pink goes Avril Lavigne one better on this album. She manages to mate the punk ethic and modern pop/rock production values with a rawness and immediacy that goes far beyond Lavigne's pop-punk amalgam. To drive her point home, Pink closes the album with an unlisted hidden track that attacks teen-poppers like Britney and Christina with expletive-filled glee.

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/06/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Pnk-Try-This-Colored-Vinyl-Red-150-Gram-Vinyl-Download-Insert_BvjXq.jpg?v=1742238496
lana-del-rey-lust-for-life-explicit-content-2-lps
| Lust For Life (2LP)

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release, the fifth studio album and fourth major-label record by singer Lana Del Rey. Otis and supporting tracks by fellow Chicago artists including Chance the Rapper, Saba, Donnie Trumpet, and Kweku Collins. In early 2016, Woods helped close out Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "White Privilege II," courageous enough to assert "Your silence is a luxury" at the pair's overwhelmingly white fan base. Around the time that song came out, Woods released her own "Blk Grl Soldier." A muscular Jus Cuz production served as the backdrop for a characteristically soft and sweetly melodic vocal, rich in pride and fortitude, with substance packed into each line: "Look at what they did to my sisters -- last century, last week/They make her hate her own skin, treat her like a sin/They love how it repeats." Months later, the perseverance anthem appeared smack in the middle of the sanguine HEAVN. On the title song, Woods floats over a rolling groove, quoting the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" and then twisting it a bit, beaming "I don't wanna run away with you/I wanna live our life right here." She later sings "I don't belong here" and "I'm an alien from inner space" in "Way Up," and dreams of leaving this planet in "Stellar," but Woods otherwise isn't one to promote escapism, not when she's sustained by friends, family, and fellow musicians -- including most of the above-mentioned -- who inspired and/or helped create this album. Some moments regard an intimate relationship and independence, occasionally both at once, like when she affirms "Nobody completes me" in "Holy." A larger portion concerns communal matters like survival, resistance, sisterhood, and how to thrive in conditions designed to perpetuate oppression. The resolutely nurturing and buoyant qualities make it easy to miss out on some of the wisdom and stirring lines such as "Grandma loved granddaddy even after he forgot our names," related over Nico Segal's trumpet and the kaleidoscopic swirl of Stereolab's "The Flower Called Nowhere." Originally a digital-only release from Closed Sessions, HEAVN was expanded and reissued a year later by Jagjaguwar, made available on physical formats with a track list that added six interludes and a thick reprise of "Holy." The interludes, especially the one in which children recite an Assata Shakur quote -- inserted as a brilliant setup for "Blk Grl Soldier" -- are not extraneous. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/06/2017

It's tempting to hear Kamasi Washington's six-track Harmony of Difference suite as a follow-up to his sprawling, justifiably acclaimed three-hour debut The Epic. But this EP, at just over half-an-hour, is, in many ways, a standalone work. It was performed in New York at The Whitney Biennial as part of a show that included a film by director A.G. Rojas and paintings by Washington's sister Amani. According to the artist, it was composed to explore "the philosophical possibilities of the musical technique known as 'counterpoint.'" Washington defines it as "the art of balancing similarity and difference to create harmony between separate melodies." That description is, at least in this setting, akin to metaphor in the current socio-political-cultural era where flash point battles over issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, and cultural appropriation are being waged afresh.These six tunes reveal Washington's compositional and arrangement mastery. Five relatively short themes are all standalone tunes but are all embodied in the 13-minute climax "Truth," which embodies tenets from all of the preceding tunes but is an entirely new holistic rainbow of sound. Washington draws heavily on numerous influences from '70s jazz here, as well as the modal influence of John Coltrane. "Desire" introduces a melodic theme that emerges from spiritual soul-jazz, but with Matt Haze's electric guitar and a wordless vocal chorus, it touches on everything from Billy Harper's Capra Black (second side) to Santana's Caravanserai and Norman Connors' first three albums -- in four-and-a-half minutes! It opens onto the progressive big band -- ? la Gerald Wilson -- of "Humility," which sports a fleet, knotty piano solo from Cameron Graves, a soulful trumpet break from Dontae Winslow, and Washington's squalling solo above a B-3, and the interplay between two drummers (Tony Austin and Ronald Bruner, Jr.) and bassist Miles Mosely. "Knowledge" and "Perspective" make full use of CTI's illustrious palette for arrangement with an expansive horn chart. Ryan Porter's trombone solo comes right out of Los Angeles soul (the former) while Kamasi's honk and groove in the latter suggests the fleet funk of Grover Washington, Jr. and adds Thundercat on electric bass. The smooth switch gets flipped on in "Integrity," whose theme and rhythms actively engage Brazilian, Latin jazz, and West African jazz. The sprawling "Truth" adds a choir, vibes, and a full string section as it embraces the themes of its predecessors and stretches them to the breaking point, where they seamlessly meld into a wonder of color, tempo, improvisation, and lush exotic form. Harmony of Difference reveals a gentler, more economical, but no less adventurous Washington. It's chock-full of refreshing, sophisticated ideas, all balanced by an empathic, emphatic inclusiveness that engages the listener at both musical and emotional levels. ~ Thom Jurek

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: 12" EP standard Jacket

Genre: Jazz

Format: Vinyl

Internal ID: JITRE

Released: 10/06/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/kamasi-washington-harmony-of-difference-ep-_ODknU.jpg?v=1747013209
our-lady-peace-spiritual-machines-import
Spiritual Machines [Import]
TracksCredits
- Disc 1 -
1 R.K. Whether you were one of the fans who feared or one of the detractors who hoped that Pink would fail to follow-up her smash debut album, M!SSUNDAZTOOD serves notice that the lady with the pink hair (yes, it still is) is more than just a one-shot flash in the pan. The grooving pop of the title-track is less hip-hop oriented than Pink's previous hits, sounding more like an amiable collision between Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray. "Don't Let Me Get Me" and "Just Like a Pill" tread even closer to pop-rock territory, the latter bearing an anthemic quality that wouldn't sound out of place on an Alanis Morissette album. The appropriately titled "Get the Party Started is a funky party anthem, and the rap-flavored "Respect" is a modern urban update on the classic Aretha theme. Whether she's making her way through pop, rock, rap, or R&B, Pink struts confidently enough through M!SSUNDAZTOOD to assure her admirers that she intends to stick around for quite a while.

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/06/2017

Personnel: John Prine (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Howie Epstein (acoustic guitar, bass, percussion, background vocals); Mike Campbell (electric guitar, bass); Jay Dee Manness (pedal steel guitar); Steve Fishell (dobro); Phil Parlapiano (mandolin, accordion, harmonium); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Benmont Tench (piano, organ, harmonium, bass); John Ciambotti, Bob Glaub (bass); Joe Romersa (drums, percussion); Richard Hardwick, Al Bunetta (percussion); Christina Amphlett, Liz Byrnes (background vocals).
Recorded at Huh Sound Theater, Los Angeles, California and The Money Pit, Nashville, Tennessee.
Folk singer and songwriter extrordinaire John Prine had to wait 20 years before the music industry acknowledged him with the coveted Grammy. The golden prize was awarded for THE MISSING YEARS and it's a just reward, although any number of his prior records could have been named Best Folk Album. Which is not to say that THE MISSING YEARS is not a tour-de-force. Quite simply, it is Prine's most rewarding post-'70s release.
With Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Howie Epstein at the producer's helm and a host of notable guests (Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Phil Everly), Prine unveils a winning set of country-rock tinged folk songs. The rolling "Picture Show" kicks things off with the familiar bang of Prine's trademark laconic delivery and stunning wordplay laced with playful and bittersweet irony. From there Prine goes from strength to strength, ranging from the silly ("It's A Big Ol' Goofy World,") to heartwarming ("Unlonely,") to the simply stunning ("Jesus the Missing Years"). The latter is an absurdist recollection of the 18 unaccounted for years in Christ's life. ENTA DA STAGE is a classic in its genre, featuring deep-in-the-crates beats by DJ Evil Dee (who continues to have a presence in New York's underground hip-hop scene), lurid street imagery delivered by MCs Buckshot and 5T and a flavor forever reminiscent of early-'90s New York.As much a social phenomenon as a congregation of MCs and DJs, the Boot Camp Clik spawned Smif-N-Wesson (who later changed their name to Cocoa Brovaz after the arms manufacturer commenced litigation), Heltah Skeltah and the Originoo Gunn Clappaz. ENTA DA STAGE contains the classics "Who's Got Da Props?", "How Many MC's?," "Buck Em Down," (a perfect example of Black Moon's fondness for choosing jazzy loops as the foundations for epic tales of criminal adventurism, a style perfected on "Shit iz Real") and the contagious "I Got Cha Opin." Buckshot and 5T's delivery styles are somewhat monotonous compared to rappers who came after them and might best be described as "blunted," but Evil Dee's production style will remain as much a benchmark of NY beat-making as Beats By the Pound's will of Southern playa rap.

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/06/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/black-moon-enta-da-stage-2017-reissue-edition-remastered-2-lps_ZM24F.jpg?v=1759362000
motionless-in-white-graveyard-shift-1
Graveyard Shift *
On their fourth set of nocturnal gothcore, Motionless in White continue the evolution away from generic metalcore they began on 2012's Infamous. Grasping the late-'90s sounds of kindred ghouls like Orgy, Marilyn Manson, and Rob Zombie by the throats, Graveyard Shift matures the Chris Motionless-led outfit, smoothing some edges with improved production and tighter songwriting. For fans of the aforementioned groups -- Orgy especially -- the comparisons are unavoidable. Motionless affects a full-on Jay Gordon creep-croon -- itself an homage to Manson -- that is most noticeable on tracks like "Untouchable," "Loud (Fuck It)," and the pornographic doom of "Rats," a creepy delight that includes the threatening line "Shut your mouth before I fuck it" (one of the many shock-for-the-sake-of-it lyrics found on Graveyard Shift). Later, Motionless further pushes the boundaries of lyrical taste on the blistering "Soft," an aggressive blast that terrorizes with a violent promise to "fuck your face with a switchblade." Other highlights include the sequel to Reincarnate's "Dead as Fuck" titled "Not My Type: Dead as Fuck 2." Another fellatio romp with a living dead girl, the playfully spooky track amps up the mayhem with B-movie schlock that sounds like the Nightmare Before Christmas stitched together with early Zombie or Portrait-era Manson. Jonathan Davis appears on the huge anthem "Necessary Evil," which stomps as hard as Korn. Fans who were concerned about the band getting too mellow with the alt-metal changes can rest easy and head straight for "Queen for Queen," "The Ladder," "Voices," and "570," which bring the breakdowns and emetic screaming of classic Motionless. For all the scare tactics and violence, the album closes on "Eternally Yours" -- as romantic and touching as the band may ever get -- wherein Motionless croons "I'm more than willing to rot in hell with you." Graveyard Shift is a highly enjoyable and entertaining continuation for a band that knowingly winks along with the madness they concoct. ~ Neil Z. The chart-topping effort was more of the same for the artist: raw and dark, balancing intense bloodletting with the occasional radio-friendly banger. With production and delivery that still sounded quite similar to Eminem at his most serious, Perception didn't do much to distance NF from comparisons to his predecessor. It's no secret that Eminem was a major influence: as NF unloads on "Know," "I've been doing this since I was just a kid and mama bought me 8 Mile at the movie store." However, unlike his fellow Michigander, NF continued to deliver breathless and complex rhymes without curses, profanity, or cartoonish exaggeration. Personal turmoil and trauma continued to fuel his rhymes, with "Intro III," "Outcast," and "Destiny" offering some of most aggressive attacks. Even sonically propulsive tracks like "Let You Down," "One Hundred," and "10 Feet Down" -- while thrilling and mainstream-ready -- played on introspection and existential musings upon closer examination of his lyrics. For listeners initially attracted to the Christian angle of the rapper's earliest releases, Perception took further steps away from that niche, opting for themes that were more universal. As he reminded fans on "Remember This," "People change/Even Satan used to be an angel." Perception is a heavy and serious listen, but fortunately it's never dull, mostly due to the density of NF's continually engrossing lyrics. ~ Neil Z. Although there are elements of traditional British folk music, there's an edginess to the songwriting and arrangements that would be entirely alien in a Fairport Convention or Pentangle disc. At times, this straddles the border between folk-rock and the kind of songs you'd expect to be sung at a witches' brew fest, the haunting supernatural atmosphere enhanced by bursts of what sound like a theramin-like violin, hand drums, flute, oboe, ghostly female backup vocals, and detours into almost tribal rhythms. All of this might be making the album sound more attractive than it is; the songs are extremely elongated and fragmented, and the male vocals often have a grating munchkin-like quality, sometimes sounding like a wizened Marc Bolan. The lyrics are impenetrable musings, mixing pastoral scenes of nature with images of gore, torture, madness, and even rape, like particularly disturbing myths being set to music. It's been reissued on CD, but here's one case where you might want to get the LP reissue (on Get Back) instead, as it comes with a bonus 12" of three songs in a similar vein as their rare 1971 EP. ~ Richie Unterberger

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/06/2017

WHAT'S WORDS WORTH is a Records & It's an approach best exemplified by dramatic leads Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor during the gorgeous "Elephant Love Melody," an endearing call-and-response during which lines from songs by the Beatles, Kiss, U2, Wings, and Thelma Houston are tossed back and forth as the duo argue over their burgeoning emotional involvement.Elsewhere, Kidman quotes Madonna ("Material Girl") and Marilyn Monroe ("Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend") amidst brassy, Vegas-like arrangements and dance beats. This 12-track collection of standards -- apart from "Hark! The production is clean and unfussy, sparkling just enough to suggest new-fallen snow but not enough to be tacky, and Rucker is amiable, perhaps a bit too digitally polished but possessing enough good charm to keep things moving at a nice clip. Smoothly soulful (but not slick) and spiritually uplifting throughout, the album's blend of funky fusion and progressive R&B is hardly the stuff purist dreams are made of, but anyone who loves the deep grooves of Donald Byrd or Mason's former employer, Roy Ayers, will immediately understand why this is considered a masterpiece in acid jazz circles. Breezy ballads and ferocious up-tempo groovers alike benefit from Mason's sure sense of songcraft and his knack for full-bodied arrangements. Mason plays all the guitars and loads of vintage synths (two different ARPs and Fender Rhodes electric piano among them), so he's largely responsible for the instrumental meat of every track. And though he's a strong soloist when he chooses, his focus is more on creating luxurious textures and working the grooves. And work them he does -- the faster tracks are amazingly driving for the jazz-funk genre, taken at tempos that would be fast even for R&B or rock, with lots of frantically slapped bass from Gene Torres. Clarice Taylor's vocals are far more soulful than the charmingly amateurish jazz-funk norm; what's more, the songs -- all but one co-written by Ninoska Escobar -- aren't just perfunctory groove vehicles, but feel more substantially structured than is typical for the genre. At least four -- "Sweet Power Your Embrace," "Free," "Funny Girl," and "Slick City" -- have become rare-groove club standards, and the title cut is an absolute monster. Records like Rhythm of Life -- catchy, funky, richly textured, and utterly joyous -- are a huge reason the acid jazz movement came into being; since their virtues aren't as prized by hardcore jazzers, they might otherwise be consigned to oblivion. And so her 2012 album fills a specific need -- it's a breezy, sunny holiday platter for those who never see a snowflake in their December. Colbie's specialty is a light touch but she actually rocks a little bit harder here than usual, letting her duet partner Brad Paisley goose "Merry Christmas Baby" with his gnarly Telecaster and giving "Winter Wonderland" an insistent electronic pulse, elements that make Christmas in the Sand a little livelier than either of her full-length platters, but the casual brilliance of this unassuming but thoroughly entertaining holiday album is that it has a genuine personality. Due to a grueling touring regimen and work ethic, they've garnered a fanatical following that seems to grow almost exponentially with each release. Nightbringers, their eighth, marks the first time TBDM have consciously looked at their roots and brought them into the present as a basis to push off from. Part of the rear-view glance may have to do with new lead guitarist Brandon Ellis (also a member of tech-death powerhouses Arsis). Not only does he deliver brutal riffage, he composed a good deal of the material on Nightbringers based on the influence of the band's trademark sound.While earworm hooks and crunchy brutal riffs have always been part of TBDM's sonic signature (along with Trevor Strnad's dark poetic lyrics and unhinged vocals), listeners have not heard them in such abundance since 2007's Nocturnal and 2008's Deflorate. This is true to such a degree that the set's four standout tracks (though there are no weaklings in this 33-minute crash-and-burn assault) could have been easily placed on either of those recordings and, as a whole, this set feels like it completes a trilogy, albeit a decade on. Opener "Widowmaker" is one of the best starter cuts the group has delivered in a while. The riff is monolithic; its hook won't let go. The melody is underscored by Strnad's instantly recognizable, earthquaking vocals (complete with visceral screams) and a maniacal shredding solo by Ellis. With its twin-guitar riffing, the title track single is more chug than squall, but drummer Alan Cassidy and bassist Max Lavelle build on that with double-timed kick drum force and a ferocious bass throb. Strnad's non-clich?d indictment of Christianity is growled and screamed, empowered further by Ellis' screaming solo and Brian Eschbach's detuned atonal counterpoint riff."Kings of the Nightworld" is full-throttle melo-death complemented by menacing, chanted gang vocals, and makes for one of the set's catchiest tracks. It's followed by "Catacomb Hecatomb," whose twin-guitar intro is rivaled by the whomp of Cassidy's kit and Strnad's seemingly effortless vocal glide between filthy guttural roil and assaultive screaming. The set finishes strong as well, first with the gorgeous guitar interplay and blastbeats in "As Good as Dead," while closer "The Lonely Deceased" seems to pour gasoline on the fire -- even during an acoustic guitar break in the middle. Most bands who've been together this long reach a point where all that's left is refining an already established signature. The Black Dahlia Murder needn't refine anything. As displayed on Nightbringers, there's plenty of room left to explore and experiment inside their sound, while expanding its parameters. They've done both to excellent effect here. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 10/06/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/black-dahlia-murder-nightbringers_4xSDq.jpg?v=1741079128
u-roy-version-galore
VERSION GALORE
Includes liner notes by Tony Rounce.All tracks have been digitally remastered."Versions galore, you can hear them by the score, I could give you some more for sure," U-Roy shouts out on the title track of Version Galore, and indeed he could and did, recording scores and scores of versions of classic Jamaican hits. This album gathers up a dozen of some of his earliest, all cut for Duke Reid at Treasure Isle studio between 1969 and 1970. Included is one of his chartbusters, a version of the Paragons' "Wear You to the Ball." Paragon vocalist John Holt was responsible for bringing the DJ to Treasure Isle, and U-Roy repaid the singer by versioning a clutch of classic Paragons' songs, five of which appear here. The DJ was obviously a fan, and chatted along to the songs as one would to an old friend, most noticeably on "The Tide Is High" (Blondie would later have a hit with a cover of the original) and "Happy Go Lucky Girl." There again, on "Flashing My Whip," a version of the group's "Only a Smile," U-Roy demands that the trio put a smile on their face, a bit difficult considering the song's intrinsic heartbreak. The DJ's ease with these golden oldies allowed him to adeptly sing along, call out for the vocalists to sing on cue, wander off in other lyrical directions, and still find the perfect spot for his catch phrases. But this talent didn't end with the Paragons and rocksteady, "True Confessions," for example, was a ska-fired, doo wop-inspired hit for the Silvertones, and U-Roy motors away on this with equal ease. Interestingly enough, though, it's evident that without the vocals as a lyrical launch pad, the DJ is rather at a loss. Thus the two instrumentals here are actually the weakest tracks. While it's unclear if anything they played made it onto Undivided Heart & Soul, it certainly sounds like it could have. Rife with gritty R&B tones and a driving punk energy, the album sounds like something QOTSA might have made if they'd come into their own in the '60s garage rock era instead of the alt-rock 2000s. Which means, for longtime McPherson fans, the album feels both familiar and like a conscious attempt to shake things up; not a huge leap off the stylistic cliff, but a dance on the edge nonetheless. Recorded in Nashville's historic RCA studio B with producer Dan Molad, Undivided Heart & Soul once again finds the Oklahoma-born belter joined by longtime bassist and collaborator Jimmy Sutton, as well as his regular touring lineup of pianist/organist Raynier Jacob Jacildo, drummer Jason Smay, and guitarist/saxophonist Doug Corcoran. Making guest appearances are Lucius' Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, Nicole Atkins, and Raconteurs guitarist Jack Lawrence. Also helping McPherson disrupt his own sound here are several songwriting collaborators including nervy pop stalwart Butch Walker, fellow Oklahoman Parker Millsap, and former Semi Precious Weapons-guitarist-turned Nashville-psych-singer/songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan. The result is that McPherson's brand of vintage Americana sounds even more stylistically cross-pollinated. Cuts like the lushly romantic "Hunting for Sugar" and the driving "On the Lips" somehow touch upon classic Memphis and Chicago soul sides just as much as they evince '80s Squeeze and the edgy garage rock of the Strokes. Furthermore, while there are certainly a handful of well-honed chorus hooks here, tracks like the yearning "Jubilee" and the Tommy James-esque "Under the Spell of City Lights" deftly subvert anticipation with downplayed choruses that come just a hair later than you'd expect. These are subtle shifts that speak to McPherson's ever-growing songcraft. Thankfully, what hasn't changed is his knack for crafting memorable pop hooks, as evidenced by the Eddie Cochran-esque groover "Crying's Just a Thing That You Do," and the acidically bluesy "Lucky Penny." Both are kinetic anthems that make great use of McPherson's highly resonant, bell-tone vocals and strikingly literate lyrics. A former art teacher who grew up on a ranch, McPherson has always distinguished himself as both imagistic poet and dirt-on-his-boots troubadour. It's a dichotomy that informs much of Undivided Heart & Soul. On "Crying's Just a Thing That You Do," he sings "You're sipping your Darjeeling/And staring at the ceiling/You dream about it splitting in two," and later "I kinda held my head down for most of the ride/Skimming through Rossetti and Poe." Arty tropes aside, with Undivided Heart & Soul, McPherson continues to pull all of his varied stylistic influences together into his own vibrantly coherent brand of visceral, emotive rock that grabs you by the collar and demands your passion. ~ Matt Collar

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP 150g w/ DL

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Internal ID: JITRE

Released: 10/06/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/jd-mcpherson-undivided-heart-soul_FaEEL.jpg?v=1744922036
marilyn-manson-heaven-upside-lp-ex
HEAVEN UPSIDE (LP/EX
Personnel: Gil Sharone (drums); Olivia Jaffe (unknown instrument).Audio Mixers: Robert Carranza; Tyler Bates.Recording information: Abattoir Studios, Studio City, CA.Photographer: Perou.After a late-career rejuvenation with 2015's The Pale Emperor, Marilyn Manson extended his creative hot streak with musical partner Tyler Bates on the band's tenth offering, Heaven Upside Down. Originally saddled with the punny title Say10, the album bares sharper teeth and bloodier knuckles than its predecessor, combining Pale Emperor's bluesy, vampire-roadhouse sleaze with the jagged industrial edges that first propelled Manson to notoriety in the '90s. Cocaine and heartbreak continue to fuel the reclusive ghoul, recalling the best of 2007's forlorn Eat Me, Drink Me, a record that gave listeners the first peek at Manson the man. That change in the perception of the artist -- who went from America's Most Wanted to a fallible Hollywood Hills fixture in just a decade -- is part of what makes these late-era efforts so accessible and enjoyable. He can still menace and push the boundaries of taste, but with so many real-world monsters to worry about, Manson's brand of offensive troublemaking and reckless hedonism remains unique and oddly comforting. The album kicks off with the hulking "Revelation #12" -- stabbing like "Irresponsible Hate Anthem" twisted through Portrait's organ grinder -- which forces listeners to choose a side at the end of the world. The explosive "We Know Where You Fucking Live" is the most overtly political statement on an album that could have actually benefited from more of the firebrand's outspoken wit, but it pulverizes nonetheless. The pulsing "Kill4Me" flaunts its Bowie flair, while "Say10" takes its time with destruction, a slow burner that builds to a crushing chorus that would have fit perfectly on Holy Wood. Album centerpiece "Saturnalia" is an eight-minute epic that rides an elastic bass throb -- courtesy of patient and forgiving sidekick Twiggy Ramirez -- through a swamp of Manson-isms like "just smile like a rifle" and the appropriate-in-1999 warning of "I was invited to eat the young." "Je$u$ Cri$i$" continues to ride Twiggy's bass groove as Manson fully embraces his persona with the tasteless but catchy "I write songs to fight and to fuck to/If you wanna fight, then I'll fight you/If you wanna fuck, I will fuck you." The album closes on a trio of introspection, the spiritual siblings to peak-era favorite "Coma White." Of these, "Blood Honey" is a grand moment that finds Manson taking a vulnerable look at his life, lamenting "I'm not being mean, I'm just being me," offering an intense peek at his emotional turmoil and damaging addictions. "Heaven Upside Down" is the de facto close to the album, with "Threats of Romance" the so-called final credits music where Manson reveals "I like you damaged/But I need something left...for me to wreck." For all his pain and suffering, he needs it to feel real in the end. Heaven Upside Down is Manson at his most human. If Pale Emperor was a welcome return to form that signaled a new day for the band, its successor is just as satisfying, if not better. ~ Neil Z.
