If Nirvana burst the dam that kept punk rock at bay in the '80s, Green Day--with their third album, DOOKIE--were the first all-consuming flood to hit the charts. Brandishing old school Ramones and Clash riffs, the Berkeley, CA trio made out like bandits, selling nearly ten million albums, scaling mainstream magazine covers and hijacking rock-festival spotlights from established acts. But judging from the lyrical contents of INSOMNIAC, bringing punk to the malls hasn't been a very satisfying experience for singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong. Throughout, he rails at the moribund state of youth culture and his place in it, as bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool speed up this anger to a frenetic pace. The disses fly every which way--at well-to-doers copping poses ("Brat"), at girlfriends who just don't understand ("Stuart And The Ave."), towards the world at-large ("Panic Song"), and, most of all, at himself. As though aware that his band helped make a sacred lifestyle fashionable, Billie Joe demeans his existence in song after song--unable to even sleep in peace with himself. For the disenfranchised listener, these are the ABCs of self-hate rebellion. Judging from the catchiness of his songs, this predicament isn't likely to end soon. "Geek Stink Breath," a heavy, mid-tempo rumble in the manner of the Sex Pistols' "Sub-Mission"; "Panic Song," with its frenzied "Pinball Wizard"-like build-up, and the fired-up, pop fury of "All Wound Up," all embody the very principals that make the punk lessons of 1977 so attractive today: simplicity, hooks, a lack of pretension, and a disdain for authority. On INSOMNIAC, Green Day puts those lessons to use yet again--their platinum nightmares are sure to follow.

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/10/1995

Personnel includes: KRS-One, Fat Joe, Channel Live, Das EFX, Mad Lion, Busta Rhymes (rap vocals); DJ Dice (scratches); Dexter Thibou, Rich Nice, Sadat X (background vocals).
Producers: DJ Premier (tracks 1, 3, 8); Big French Productions (track 2); KRS-One (tracks 4, 6-7, 10, 12, 14); Norty Cotto (track 5); Showbiz (track 9); Diamond D (tracks 11, 13).
Engineers: Eddie Sancho (tracks 1, 8); Norty Cotto (tracks 2-3, 5, 12); Won Allen (track 4); Commissioner Gordon (tracks 6, 9, 11, 13); KRS-One (tracks 7, 10, 14).
Recorded at Boogie Down Productions Studios and D&D Recording Studio, New York.
All songs written or co-written by L. Lyrically speaking, no other rapper has contributed so much knowledge to the culture; musically, every song hits you in the head like a hammer. At a time when hip-hop has begun expanding into new genres (new-jack swing, g-funk, gangsta rap, R&B hip-hop, etc.), Kris Parker brings all rappers back down to earth with KRS-ONE, reminding them what hip-hop is really about.
Since his days with Boogie Down Productions, KRS-One has declared that his "Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everybody," and, due in part to his street-poet-like use of clever analogies to wake up his community, it does. On "Ah-Yeah," KRS takes on the form of his ancestors to show how the hardships they suffered are coded in today's society: "This is not the first time I came to the planet/But every time I come only a few could understand it...They try to harm me/I used to be Malcolm X/Now I'm on the planet as the one called KRS." The song is only the latest of many on which KRS has used his rhymes to educate the hip-hop nation about African-American history.
Although each song on KRS-ONE has something to teach, the idea that his music still pumps life into hip-hop through hardcore beats can not be overlooked. On "Rappers R.N. Born in Oklahoma, virtually all of the country and blues made their way through Tulsa along with Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys. And while Russell is known primarily as a rock & roll performer, that doesn't mean jack. The 14 songs here offer a glimpse of where Russell's heart really lies. All classic country and bluegrass tunes, Hank Wilson's Back features Russell and a few dozen of his closest friends from both L.A. and Nashville tearing up the classics. With everyone from Melba Montgomery, Billy Byrd, Johnny Gimble, Bob Moore, Weldon Myrick, and Pete Drake to Carl Radle, David Briggs, Charlie McCoy, and fellow Okie J.J. Cale, Russell in his alter ego runs through standards such as Lester Flatt's "Rollin' in My Sweet Baby's Arms," Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" and "Jambalaya," Bill Monroe's "Uncle Pen," Hank Thompson's "Six Pack to Go," Leon Payne's "Lost Highway," George Jones' "The Window up Above," Jimmie Driftwood's "The Battle of New Orleans," and as a closer, Leadbelly's "Goodnight Irene". This is no idle affair. Russell's reads of these classic songs from the country and bluegrass canon are played with fire, verve, and reverence, and he uses every trick in the book to get at the bottom of their meaning, allowing his voice to do things it never did before or since this recording. The playing is well rehearsed and stellar, and since it is played straight, the arrangements are minimal, making Cale's production job that much easier. Hank Wilson's Back is raw, immediate, and full of the kind of drunken passion that only someone who loves the country music tradition could execute. Recording information: Ocean Way Recording Studios, Hollywood, CA; Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA. The formidable Fleetwood Mac lineup of Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie emotionally imploded in 1987 after the release of TANGO IN THE NIGHT. After twelve years of endless touring, romantic melodrama, substance abuse and internal spats, the band deflated when Buckingham quit. Nicks, Fleetwood, Christine and John McVie pressed on, touring with guitarists Billy Burnette and Rick Vito. In 1990 the sextet released BEHIND THE MASK, but Nicks soon abandoned ship, no doubt alleviating the band's costume costs, but leaving a creative hole. In 1995 Fleetwood Mac struggled back with TIME, featuring Christine, John, Fleetwood, ex-Traffic guitarist Dave Mason, Burnette, and vocalist Bekka Bramlett (daughter of Delaney and Bonnie). Although Christine's crisp songwriting and the steadfast Fleetwood-McVie rhythm section remained, the absence of Buckingham-Nicks is notable. Bramlett is a fair singer but lacks Nicks' potent individuality and though Burnette and Mason wing some crafted Buckingham-type guitar flourishes, they lack Buckingham's dramatic eccentricity. Yet the magic remains on Christine McVie's songs; the keyboardist's beautiful "I Do" and "All Over Again," awash with wistful vocals and lush harmonies, are worthy of any classic Mac album. Mick Fleetwood actually closes TIME "singing" the Bob Geldof-like spoken reverie "These Strange Times."

Tracklist

1 Talkin' To My Heart
2 Hollywood (Some Other Kind Of Town)
3 Blow By Blow
4 Winds Of Change
5 I Do
6 Nothing Without You
7 Dreamin' The Dream
8 Sooner Or Later
9 I Wonder Why
10 Nights In Estoril
11 I Got It In For You
12 All Over Again
13 These Strange Times

*Audio and/or tracklist may vary slightly from the CD version.

Label: ‎Warner Bros.
Catalog: 45920
Rel. Yet where The Boredoms approach their music from two specific sources (free jazz and punk), Mr. Bungle easily triple or quadruple that figure when listing their influences. As with other genre-bending progressive music, the obvious question is do they pull it off?
On DISCO VOLANTE, they do quite nicely, thank you. Whether it is on the Middle East-inflected "Desert Search For Techno Allah," or on complex pieces like "The Bends," Mr. Bungle use hypnotic sounds, jarring noise and tight playing to convey their drug-soaked and semi-insane point of view to the world. The juxtaposition of styles works well--both from track to track (the extra heavy "Everyone I Went To School With Is Dead" is followed by the lounge jazz number, "Chemical Marriage") and within a single song ("Merry Go Bye Bye" leaps from a '50's rock sing-along to death-metal meltdown). Lyrically, Mr. Bungle piece together as many strange images as they do musically--"Carry Stress In The Jaw" quotes extensively from Edgar Allen Poe, while "Ma Meeshka Mow Skwoz" seems to be written in a language all its own.
Tough to listen to but rewarding, Mr. Bungle place themselves alongside groups like The Melvins, Praxis and Naked City, all trying to push the sonic envelope further out.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 10/10/1995
