Starting his solo bid almost immediately after his departure from Sabbath, Ozzy turned in classic metal albums with early-'80s Randy Rhoads collaborations like Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman, and stayed consistently strong with many platinum-selling albums throughout the '90s, 2000s, and beyond. The Ozzman has never shied away from live records, repackagings, or greatest-hits collections, either, and Memoirs of a Madman collects standout cuts from each of his 11 studio albums, offering a full range of singles that shows the full spectrum of his development as the ever-menacing prince of heavy metal darkness. The 17 tracks here run in chronological order, from 1980's easily recognizable "Crazy Train" through to early-'90s power ballads like "Mama I'm Coming Home" up to "Let Me Hear You Scream" from his 2010 studio offering Scream. His Sabbath days get a nod or two as well, with a cover of their brooding piano ballad "Changes" that Ozzy and daughter Kelly offer up as a reworked duet, and an unreleased live recording of "Paranoid" from 2010. ~ Fred Thomas

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Ozzy-Osbourne-Memoirs-of-a-Madman-Gatefold-LP-Jacket-2-Lps_wRNaU.jpg?v=1752624859
a-perfect-circle-thirteenth-step-2-lps-180-grams
A Perfect Circle | Thirteenth Step (Import LP)

Musicians came and went within the circle of A Perfect Circle. Billed as "the original motion picture soundtrack" (it wasn't, really), it was a mix of excellent, finished studio tracks and a couple of live tracks. Despite this, it's understandable why it didn't appeared in the digital realm until 2014 (officially, at least).
Once the estate went back to the Hendrix family in the '90s, three of the tracks from Rainbow Bridge were used on the album First Rays of the New Rising Sun, which had previously only existed as Jimi's hand-written track listing. The remaining tracks were orphaned out on various box sets and compilations. So while all the tracks on Rainbow Bridge have been made available elsewhere, it's nice to finally have it assembled the way the original LP was, with excellent remastered sound (not just for the old-timers who had the LP the first time around, but for others who don't necessarily want to shell out for the box set needed to gather these tracks). Highlights include overlooked gems like "Pali Gap" and Jimi's rarely heard studio version of "The Star Spangled Banner," which is made of multi-tracked guitars and basses. ~ Sean Westergaard

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/jimi-hendrix-rainbow-bridge-original-motion-picture-soundtrack_I5ETD.jpg?v=1759114081
jawbreaker-24-hour-revenge-therapy
24 Hour Revenge Therapy
More trials and tribulations than an average episode of Melrose Place, Jawbreaker continue to explore their personal struggles on their third album, fittingly titled 24 Hour Revenge Therapy. Continuing in the Jawbreaker tradition of poetic lyrics that provide a mental image to each song, the band deal with their endeavors through music instead of wallowing in them, making this record not entirely bleak. "Do You Still Hate Me," for example, has the persona dishing out the friction of a relationship gone sour through talking to the person in question: "I wrote you a letter/I heard it upset you/How can I do this better/We're getting older/But we're acting younger." Being critiqued and ostracized from their scene during the height of their popularity was another headache singer/songwriter Blake Schwarzenbach dealt with around the time this album was released (their previous album, Bivouac, provided them with a huge cult following). This no doubt inspired the song "Indictment," which talks about not caring what anyone thinks of their songwriting ("I just wrote the dumbest song/It's going to be a singalong/Our enemies will laugh and be pointing/It wont bother me, what the thoughtless are thinking"). Providing the perfect flow of temperamental pop to go along with these stories is proof enough that 24 Hour Revenge Therapy is an acme of Jawbreaker's creative output. ~ Mike DaRonco

Format Detail: LP

Genre: Punk

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Jawbreaker-24-Hour-Revenge-Therapy_6MeJW.jpg?v=1747142283
fripp-eno-equatorial-stars-200-gram-vinyl-import
Equatorial Stars (200 Gram Vinyl) [Import]

Equatorial Stars (200 Gram Vinyl) [Import] is a Records & LPs from Fripp & Eno

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Fripp-Eno--Equatorial-Stars-200-Gram-Vinyl-Import_ee8fy_a1b7bde0-e2a3-4071-8fa9-b3119cc32f6d.jpg?v=1758742781
kiss-alive-the-millennium-concert-2-lps
Alive: The Millennium Concert (2 Lp's)
Personnel: Ace Frehley (vocals, guitar); Peter Criss (vocals, drums); Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley (vocals).
Audio Mixer: James "Jimbo" Barton.
Recording information: BC Place Stadium, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada (12/31/1999).
Photographer: Steve Jennings.
Owners of Kiss Alive! 1975-2000 can shake their fists in anger as the release of Alive: The Millennium Concert liberates that box set's exclusive bonus disc so even the casual can snatch it up. Furthermore, the two aren't such an odd pair. Bennett naturally has a long track record not just in regards to the Great American Songbook, but in presenting it to modern audiences, freshening it up for an MTV Unplugged in 1994 and cutting a full album with k.d. lang in 2002, while Gaga is grounded in music theater and cabaret, a background that is perhaps too apparent on Cheek to Cheek even when it serves her well. She has the chops to sing these warhorses but she sometimes seems unsure of her skills, relying on sheer power when she'd be better off easing into a lyric. Gaga also is occasionally betrayed by her taste for camp -- it's fetching when she's re-creating the splendor of 1976 within the album art but when she begins throwing out flirty asides on "Goody Goody" ("I'm no goodie, I'm a baddie"), she slips on the thin ice she's skating upon. Comparatively, Bennett takes things perhaps a shade too casually, relying on charm as much as skill. This isn't entirely a bad thing. His ease provides a welcome tonic to Gaga's eager glee club theatrics and there are some sparks that arise from this contrast. Also, Cheek to Cheek benefits from sharp arrangements and production that draw upon anything from boisterous, full-bore big bands to swinging, intimate cabaret. Such variety helps spice up a pretty predictable set of songs -- it's a familiar parade of Porter, Berlin, Ellington, Kern, with Cy Coleman & Carolyn Leigh's "Firefly" being the least-familiar tune (although Bennett has recorded it numerous times since the late '50s) -- but Cheek to Cheek is a record where the music and even the songs take a backseat to the personalities. Gaga and Bennett intended to put on a razzle-dazzle show here and that's exactly what they did. Whether you like it or not depends entirely on how much you dig the way they swing. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Jazz

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Tony-Bennett-Lady-Gaga-Cheek-To-Cheek_8pXbU.jpg?v=1741718074
james-taylor-thats-why-im-here
That's Why I'm Here

Brand New Sealed | James Taylor | That's Why I'M Here | Vinyl | Release Date: 10/14/2014

Genre: Rock and Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/james-taylor-thats-why-im-here_UyASf.jpg?v=1758984517
kansas-leftoverture-import-180-gram-vinyl
Leftoverture [Import] (180 Gram Vinyl)

SIDE A 1. The band reacted to their subsequent world domination by cranking the shows to previously unimagined levels of theatrics and sheer volume. The album's sequel, ALIVE II, captures one of the most bombastic displays in rock's history--every ounce of Kiss' blood-spitting, fire-breathing energy is here.
After this thunderous document's historic introduction ("You wanted the best, you got the best!"), the band launches straight into "Detroit Rock City," just one of the many classics whose dramatic power is multiplied in this setting. "Love Gun" takes on even more swagger than its studio version, and Ace Frehley's "Shock Me" is perhaps his definitive performance. "Beth" is delivered by Peter Criss atop an almost terrifying backdrop of teenage screams. In between spitting blood and fire, Simmons contributes the lascivious "Calling Dr. Love" and the prehistoric stomp of "God of Thunder." The requisite anthem "Shout It Out Loud" is here too, along with a quintet of studio cuts, rounding out one of hard rock's most important statements.

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

Audio Mixer: Will Putney.
Recording information: Machine Shop (03/11/2014-04/14/2014); The Jungle Studios, Mesa, AZ (03/11/2014-04/14/2014).
Editors: Randy Leboeuf; Tom Smith Jr.
Coma Witch is the seventh studio album from long-running extreme metal burners the Acacia Strain. At 34 minutes, it's brief and nearly half of its ten songs were composed by songwriters other than Seger, two characteristics that would suggest something of a patchwork job if it weren't for the fact that in the days before the Silver Bullet Band, Bob used to regularly split his brief albums between originals and covers. In its construction, Ride Out mirrors early albums like Back in 72 but it comes from the days after the Silver Bullet Band, the days where Seger surrounded himself with highly paid professional musicians who didn't leave a note out of place. Oddly, even with all these pros aboard here, Ride Out feels like the homespun work of an old millionaire rocker, a record that prefers to amiably ramble instead of driving full-speed ahead. Often, Seger sticks strictly to his wheelhouse -- a charging rendition of John Hiatt's "Detroit Made" is textbook Seger, from its fist-pumping chorus to its rapturous odes to bucket seats -- but he's just as likely to veer into gutbucket blues (the hard-hitting "Hey Gypsy," his best original here) or country story-telling (Steve Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand" and Kasey Chambers' "Adam and Eve," the two best covers here). Although Ride Out might cover too much disparate ground, there's some charm in the fact that Seger is loose enough to keep his ends untied. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/bob-seger-ride-out-180-gram-vinyl_VK41y_e06f6043-dd83-467a-b61e-e5309e785eed.jpg?v=1758803353

Limited audiophile 180gm vinyl LP repressing of this classic album including digital download.

Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Paul Chambers, Scott LaFaro (bass); Philly Joe Jones, Paul Motian (drums). After a late night session for Chet Baker in 1959, producer Orrin Keepnews persuaded pianist Bill Evans, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones to stick around and lay down a few tracks as a trio. The result was the stunning ON GREEN DOLPHIN STREET, an album that somehow waited more than a decade for its release. The three had spent a good deal of time together in 1958 as Miles Davis' rhythm section and displayed their highly developed interplay on some of Davis' repertoire including "Woody'n You" and the title track. Evans' legendary pastel style is in fine form as he gently rolls through the opening "You And The Night And The Music" with cascading chords in the left hand and swirling melodies in the right. Of special note, included after the '59 studio session is a live "All Of You" from the famed Village Vanguard sessions of June 1961 with Evans' greatest trio, including Scott LaFaro (bass) and Paul Motian (drums).

Tracklist

A1 You And The Night And The Music
A2        My Heart Stood Still
A3        On Green Dolphin Street
B1 How Am I To Know?
B2        Woody'n You (Take 1)
B3        Woody'n You (Take 2)
B4        Loose Bloose
B5        Fudgesickle Built For Four

*Audio and/or tracklist may vary slightly from the vinyl version.

Label: IMT
Rel. Unfortunately, Ace Frehley (frustrated by his diminishing role in the group) departed the band prior to recording. He was replaced by Vinnie Vincent, who contributed some lightning-fast riffs.
From the monstrous drum fill that opens the record, it is clear that the grease painted warriors mean business. Dickinson's operatic performance here made him an instant metal icon, challenging even Rob Halford for bragging rights, and helped launch the band into the stratosphere. The Number of the Beast topped the charts in the U.K., but even more crucially -- with Judas Priest having moved into more commercial territory -- it also made Iron Maiden the band of choice for purists who wanted their metal uncompromised. Maiden took the basic blueprint Priest had created in the late '70s -- aggressive tempos, twin-guitar interplay, wide-ranging power vocals -- and cranked everything up faster and louder. The album's intensity never lets up, the musical technique is peerless for its time, and there isn't a truly unmemorable song in the bunch. Blessed with a singer who could drive home a melody in grandiose fashion, Steve Harris' writing gets more ambitious, largely abandoning the street violence of old in favor of fittingly epic themes drawn from history, science fiction, and horror. The exceptions are "22 Acacia Avenue," a sequel to "Charlotte the Harlot" that sounds written for Di'Anno's range, and the street-crime tale "Gangland," which Harris didn't write; though the punk influences largely left with Di'Anno, these two definitely recall the Maiden of old. As for the new, two of the band's (and, for that matter, heavy metal's) all-time signature songs are here. The anthemic "Run to the Hills" dramatized the conquest of the Native Americans and became the band's first Top Ten U.K. single. It features Maiden's trademark galloping rhythm, which in this case serves to underscore the images of warriors on horseback. Meanwhile, the title track's odd-meter time signature keeps the listener just slightly off balance and unsettled, leading into the most blood-curdling Dickinson scream on record; the lyrics, based on nothing more than Harris' nightmare after watching a horror movie, naturally provoked hysterical accusations of Satan worship (which, in turn, naturally provoked sales). "Hallowed Be Thy Name" is perhaps the most celebrated of the band's extended epics; it's the tale of a prisoner about to be hanged, featuring some of Harris' most philosophical lyrics. It opens with a superbly doomy atmosphere before giving way to a succession of memorable instrumental lines and an impassioned performance by Dickinson; despite all the tempo changes, the transitions never feel jarring. Elsewhere, "The Prisoner" is a catchy retelling of the hit British TV series, and "Children of the Damned" is a slower, heavier number patterned after the downtempo moments of Dio-era Black Sabbath. CD remasters integrate "Total Eclipse," first released as the B-side of "Run to the Hills," into the running order. Though some moments on The Number of the Beast are clearly stronger than others, the album as a whole represented a high-water mark for heavy metal, striking a balance between accessible melodicism and challenging technique and intensity. Everything fell into place for Iron Maiden here at exactly the right time, and the result certainly ranks among the top five most essential heavy metal albums ever recorded. But for his 2003 release, Man at Work, Hay decided to take a step back and rework several Men at Work classics. While it's not uncommon for classic rockers to rework their songs (the "unplugged" craze of the '90s, anyone?), the reasoning as to why Hay would issue such a recording now is a bit puzzling. While such acoustic Men at Work tracks as "Overkill" and "Who Can It Be Now?" are quite charming and worth hearing, the re-recordings of "Be Good Johnny" and "It's a Mistake" (which are almost identical to the originals) don't add much to the originals. Hay's non-Men at Work songs ("Beautiful World," "Waiting for My Real Life to Begin") are worth hearing, but of course, they're not up to the high Business as Usual standards. Gestating for years, possibly started immediately after 2009's No Line on the Horizon and ushered into existence by many midwives, Songs of Innocence appeared suddenly in September 2014, nearly nine months after "Invisible," the presumptive lead single for the record, flopped. "Invisible" is nowhere to be found on Songs of Innocence, yet its vaguely electronic thrum did indeed turn out to be a taste of where U2 were headed after those endless sessions wound up shepherded by Danger Mouse. Songs of Innocence -- its title taken from William Blake, although many music nerds may first think of David Axelrod -- does indeed incorporate electronic elements in a way no U2 album since Pop has, weaving samples, loops, and other flourishes within music that otherwise adheres to the self-conscious classicism that has been the band's stock in trade since Y2K. Which is another way of saying that where the U2 of the '90s looked forward, the 2014 U2 are looking back, aware of a legacy that includes decades of arena-filling anthems, the deliberate reinvention of Achtung Baby, and their initial inspiration from the great spark of punk rock. The latter also provides the thematic fuel on Songs of Innocence, a quasi-autobiographical coming-of-age story from Bono that begins with the big bang of "The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)." This opening fanfare doesn't sound a thing like the Ramones, nor does "This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now" sound like its reported inspiration, the Clash: they, like everything else here, sound like U2, albeit a U2 who are beginning to carry the weight of their years somewhat uneasily. Majesty doesn't come easily to them anymore, so they've replaced surging melodrama with a brittle, insistent clamor that's intended to dazzle. It's busy enough to be bracing yet it's also wearying, exuding a faint air of desperation that dampens the emotional pull of such lovely moments as "Song for Someone" and "The Troubles" (the latter featuring vocals from Lykke Li) while merely providing clatter elsewhere. Often, there's a nagging sense U2 could've pushed themselves a little harder sonically -- "Raised by Wolves" benefits from the coiled paranoia created by its frenetically circling vocals and guitars -- but that would've required risk, which they've been avoiding since Pop's garbled rollout. Instead, Songs of Innocence showcases how U2 desire to have things both ways. They camouflage their nostalgia in the sound of modernity; they play gigantic music about intimacy; they want to expand their horizons without leaving home. They want to be everything to everyone and, in attempting to do so, they've wound up with a record that appeals to a narrow audience: fellow travelers who either thrill at the spectacle or dig for the subtleties buried underneath the digital din. [Upon the surprise digital release of Songs of Innocence in September 2014, U2 announced the physical edition would appear a month later with an extra disc of bonus tracks. The band kept their promise, adding a second disc (along with finished artwork) to their thirteenth studio album for its physical release. Depending how you keep score, this second disc contains either 5, 10, or 11 tracks; the count is thrown off by five cuts being sequenced as one 22-minute track called "Acoustic Sessions" and a slightly alternate version of "Invisible" being buried as a hidden track at the end. Along with these "Acoustic Sessions" -- most being more fully arranged than the title suggests, particularly "Raised by Wolves" -- there is an alternate version of "The Troubles" and an "alternate perspective mix by Tchad Blake" for "Sleep Like a Baby Tonight," welcome variations all but which basically leave two songs as enticements for anybody other than the hardcore: "Lucifer's Hands" and "The Crystal Ballroom." Neither song seems to belong thematically to the loose semi-autobiographical narrative of the proper album and they're also more nimble than much of the record, with "Lucifer's Hands" benefitting from a dense percolating arrangement anchored by a trashy little guitar riff and "The Crystal Ballroom" evoking an arch, art-punk disco quite well. They might not have fit snugly onto the record but as individual songs, they're stronger than some of the tunes that made the cut.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2014

Description
CLEAN. 2014 collection from the Hard Rock legend.
