Gun Kelly GENERAL ADMISSION(EX

It's a clever joke naming your autobiographical album General Admission, and thank the stars that Cleveland MC Machine Gun Kelly is that clever. Life on the bad streets of his hometown sounds depressing and dour according to the stories here, so framing it all as a cruel joke is necessary, and breaking these downers up with a Kid Rock anthem couldn't hurt. Not when that Detroit-meets-Cleveland rap-rock cut is the worthy "Bad Mother F*cker," a simple yet aptly titled baller where MGK gives up "I'm the type to drop a hit of acid on the beach/And then fly to Baltimore and scream 'F*ck the police!'" as if that would help matters. General Admission sometimes seems dipped in this acid and stoned on shrooms as the haunting "Alpha Omega" free associates spiritual stuff like it was a Bizzy Bone cut, while the great Cleveland booster "Til I Die" and the nearly as good "World Series" are trap anthems that could be melting as they slowly trudge out of the speakers. Add to this the relationship apocalypse called "Story of the Stairs," and the doomed number dubbed "Eddie Cane" ("...only Five Heartbeats left"), and the album is a no-fun effort with little hope, with a bit of Kid Rock-driven debauchery to keep listeners off the ledge. That doesn't mean MGK holds back on the mischief, the jokes, or the wry rhymes, and when he holds Kurt Cobain up as an inspiration during "A Little More," it makes sense. General Admission can be corrosive and coarse like Nirvana's In Utero, but while it lacks that album's artistic weight, it's proud to be unattractive which, oddly enough, becomes this druggy downer's allure. ~ David Jeffries

Format: CD

Released: 10/16/2015

Genre: Pop

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Machine-Gun-Kelly-GENERAL-ADMISSIONEX_dxtc9.jpg?v=1737547220
kidz-bop-kids-kidz-bop-30
KIDZ BOP 30
Personnel: Gary Philips (guitar, piano, programming, drum programming); Alexander Almgren (guitar, piano, drum programming); Andrei Martinez Agras (guitar, drum programming); Courtney Leonard (whistle); Tyler Summers (saxophone); Vinnie Ciesielski (trumpet); John Deaderick (piano, organ); Ben Levels, Steve Peach (piano, drum programming).
Audio Mixer: Gary Philips.
Recording information: Wild Honey Studios.
Editor: Gary Philips.
On their third release of 2015, the cover act/talent search franchise known as Kidz Bop Kids continue to mine the pop charts of the previous 12-18 months, lending their young voices to hits like OMI's "Cheerleader," Rachel Platten's "Fight Song," Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood," and many more. Accordingly, 22 years separate ON AN ISLAND from ABOUT FACE, the previous solo album by Floyd axeman/singer David Gilmour. On the latter, Gilmour was still trying to distance his own sound from Floyd's, but with that band mostly a memory in 2006, he was free to honor its legacy, much as Paul McCartney's later albums acknowledged the Beatles' work.
The template for ON AN ISLAND seems to be tracks like "Breathe" from DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. The mood is an overwhelmingly mellow, spacious one, with Gilmour's trademark double-tracked vocals and plangent, liquid guitar tones flowing gracefully across almost exclusively slow-to-mid-tempo arrangements. But with Roger Waters missing from the equation, there's a notable lack of misanthropy in Gilmore's lyrical sentiments. The themes are more in keeping with the life of a fabulously wealthy elder statesman of British rock: placidly philosophical, with a luxurious air that finds its parallel in the elegant layers of guitar and keyboard lines that color the album in shimmering pastel shades.

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

This album is somewhat of an anomaly for Fela Kuti. Accompanied as always by the Africa '70 band, Kuti temporarily abandons his tradition of one song extending over an entire LP side -- although he hasn't strayed too far from form -- as the A-side track extends over basically one-and-a-half sides with the shorter funky rave "You No Go Die.....Unless" completing the B-side. In addition to that slight variance, the structure of Kuti's delivery, as well as the explicitly sexual intonation in the subject matter of "Na Poi" stray from tradition. The title song has somewhat of a history in that it was recorded and issued twice before. The first version from 1972 has not been reissued domestically; however, Yellow Fever (1976) updated the track, which carried the apt moniker "Na Poi '75." The following year the composition was revisited to comprise a lengthy version. In essence, the track is a sexual guide set to music. As such, it features both spoken narration as well as sung lyrics. "Na Poi"'s rhythms churn and grind through several notable movements -- including a spirited percussion section and several tight horn arrangements. These hark back to the same type of perpetual funk that became the cornerstone of Parliament and Funkadelic. Initially, the repercussions of such blatant sexuality resulted in the track being banned by the Nigerian Broadcasting Company -- although when the song was reissued in 1975 it snuck back on the air as the new version had an ever so slightly different name. "You No Go Die.....Unless" is much in the same spirit as James Brown's hard-driven funk musings. From Kuti's impassioned vocals to the upbeat syncopation of the rhythm, this track contains many obvious parallels between the mid-'70s stateside funk movement and that of concurrently popular African music. The incorporation of the Africa '70 horn section -- which is heavily featured during the bridges -- also provides a much thicker punctuation to Kuti's vocals. Lyrically, the song deals with the urban sprawl that was beginning to occur in Lagos -- in many ways a social observation on par with Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues" or Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City." ~ Lindsay Planer

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP+ DL Card

Genre: World Music

Format: Vinyl

Internal ID: JITRE

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/fela-kuti-na-poi-digital-download-card_AMlAL.jpg?v=1742432881
frankie-valli-the-four-seasons-jersey-cats-180-gram-vinyl-digital-download-card-import
Jersey Cats (180 Gram Vinyl, Digital Download Card) [Import]

Jersey Cats (180 Gram Vinyl, Digital Download Card) [Import] is a Records & LPs from Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/frankie-valli-the-four-seasons-jersey-cats-180-gram-vinyl-digital-download-card-import_tfkxi.jpg?v=1756793967
beach-house-thank-your-lucky-stars-gatefold-lp-jacket-mp3-download
Thank Your Lucky Stars (Gatefold LP Jacket, MP3 Download)
It's a small, but significant, detail that live drums are the first thing listeners hear on Thank Your Lucky Stars. Though "Majorette" soon unfolds into the swirling, twinkling, snow-globe beauty for which Beach House are well-known -- some might say too well-known -- the moment captures the tiny yet notable ways Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally tinker with their sound on their second release of 2015. Arriving just two months after Depression Cherry, Thank Your Lucky Stars was recorded at the same time as that album; while it's tempting to say the duo should've combined the best songs from each into one work -- or released them as a double album -- their vibes are distinct. Stars' songs were written after Depression Cherry, and express the simplicity Beach House craved after the massive-sounding Bloom in a very different way. Where its predecessor floated by in a beautiful blur that made the most of Scally and Legrand's impressionistic powers, Thank Your Lucky Stars is a collection of shorter, distinct songs rather than a mood piece. Even the old saying the duo chose for the album title hints that this is a less abstract affair than Depression Cherry. There's a lot of heart in these songs, particularly in Legrand's vocals: on the aptly named "Rough Song," she's raw and unfettered, a sharp contrast to Depression Cherry's ethereal purity. The focus on her voice also spotlights the album's lyrics in a way unique for Beach House. On "She's So Lovely," Legrand traces a relationship's decay with small shifts, the hook "All I have to do/Is everything for you" souring into "All I have to do/Is stay away from you." Interestingly, Thank Your Lucky Stars' more down-to-earth approach allows the duo to cover more musical ground. "All Your Yeahs" is one of Beach House's most driven songs, charting a more purposeful course from brooding to joyous than they've taken in the past, while "One Thing"'s Velvet Underground-like thump is surprisingly heavy. Elsewhere, Scally and Legrand get (relatively) more eclectic: "Common Girl" sounds like Nico fronting Broadcast, while "The Traveller" borrows some of Goldfrapp's gliding elegance. Nevertheless, the album's most beautiful moments are unmistakably Beach House. "Elegy to the Void" -- which might be the most Beach House-esque song title ever -- is elevated by a stratospheric guitar solo. Later, the gorgeous finale "Somewhere Tonight" proves Legrand and Scally are among the few 21st century musicians capable of updating '50s slow dance swoon without a hint of schmaltz or irony. In its own way, Thank Your Lucky Stars is just as rewarding as Depression Cherry, and arguably more immediate. Instead of releasing another mammoth effort like Bloom, they've delivered two smaller-scale triumphs that can be appreciated separately or together. ~ Heather Phares

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Beach-House-Thank-Your-Lucky-Stars-Gatefold-LP-Jacket-MP3-Download_ZKVZ5_77f72d21-6bcc-4d62-8005-1c4a2b55b0ab.jpg?v=1758976371
johnny-thunders-heartbreakers-l-a-m-f-live-at-the-village-gate-1977
L.A.M.F. - LIVE AT THE VILLAGE GATE 1977

L.A.M.F. - LIVE AT THE VILLAGE GATE 1977 is a Records & Although many great male soul singers came and went in the years following Cooke's death, none came close to the smooth and creamy style that translated to consistent crossover success. While Otis Redding was gritty and James Brown relentless, in Green's hands, R&B was sophisticated and suave. GREATEST HITS basks in a style of sultry soul that Green inherited from Cooke.
Yet, Green's style owed as much to producer Willie Mitchell's delicate production as it did to the singer's pure falsetto. While not inclined to use the vast numbers of musicians that Phil Spector did, Mitchell's use of James Mitchell (no relation) and Charles Chalmer's string arrangements, the Memphis Horns and the background vocals of Rhodes, Chalmers and Rhodes gave Green's songs a full sound that wrapped itself around Green's aching emotivity. "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" features all these elements at play, along with the crack cadence of former MG drummer Al Jackson and brothers Teenie and Charles Hodges, whose respective guitar and organ juice up the rhythm.
Thematically, listening to GREATEST HITS is like thumbing through a primer on the evolution of a relationship, and the ups and downs that come with it. The despair of "Tired Of Being Alone" gives way to a fleeting affair in "Call Me (Come Back Home)." The joy Green finds in "Love And Happiness" is temporary before the pleading begins anew with "Let's Stay Together," then gets tied up with a declaration ("L-O-V-E [Love]") and a proposal ("Let's Get Married").

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/al-green-greatest-hits_D5Bix_4dc25ef1-7903-48d6-81c3-7f6dd87ef15e.jpg?v=1758824635
b-b-king-easy-listening-blues-4-bonus-tracks
Easy Listening Blues + 4 Bonus Tracks
"Easy Listening Blues" is a bit of an oxymoron, especially in the hands of B.B. King, who might be smooth and urbane in some respects, but who's rarely recorded music that could be categorized as easy listening. That's the title that Crown used, however, for this all-instrumental 1962 collection. Just prior to leaving Modern for ABC, King did a lot of recording that Modern milked for sides to put out after he'd left the company, and some think these tracks were laid down in late 1961 as part of Modern's demand. Since a big part of the pleasure of listening to B.B. King is hearing his voice, and hearing the songs he wrote and interpreted, an all-instrumental album -- no matter how competently done -- is almost bound to sound like something's missing. And although this is a competent record, it's got to rank as one of his less essential efforts, the ten numbers often sounding like warm-up tunes or background generic blues club filler, hastily ground out to meet a quota. That doesn't mean that it's worthless -- the tunes are pleasant if unimaginative, and King plays with his usual authority, making occasional nods toward the rock & roll twist craze in cuts like "Night Long" and "Hully Gully Twist" (aka "Hully Gully"). ~ Richie Unterberger

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

B.B. With Freddie Hubbard replacing Lee Morgan, Cedar Walton replacing Bobby Timmons and musical director Wayne Shorter, the Messengers were full of fresh sounds and vibrant with energy.
Uncharacteristically for a Messengers session, the relaxed shuffle "Backstage Sally" opens the disc in a laid back groove. Shorter's brilliant playing is featured prominently on this session on the delicate ballad "Contemplation" and many stunning solo spots. The title track (dubbed for Blakey's Islamic name, Buhaina) and a dynamic arrangement of the standard "Moon River" are excellent examples of the classic Messengers sound: challenging horn arrangements, expressive soloing and assertive drumming by the leader. And the lads deliver once more on their 2010 offering, Exhibit B: The Human Condition (impressively, their fourth album over a six-year period -- 2004-2010). As with the past few Exodus releases, guitarist Gary Holt and drummer Tom Hunting are the sole original members left in attendance. But this certainly doesn't prevent the group from offering up an absolutely brutal slab of thrash metal -- with the intensity not dipping one iota from beginning to end. And according to Holt, Exhibit B is a bit of a concept album, as the lyrics deal with such warm and fuzzy topics as "cruelty, ignorance, inhumanity, and brutality." Either way, the heavy duty topics certainly fit in well with the fast and furious riffing and vocal roars (the latter courtesy of Rob Dukes) -- as evidenced on such headbanging ragers as the album opener, "The Ballad of Leonard and Charles," as well as "Class Dismissed (A Hate Primer)" and "March of the Sycophants." Even with the tunes that momentarily take a breather ("Democide," "A Perpetual State of Indifference," etc.), it's only a matter of time until Exodus rams down the gas pedal once again and returns to their chug-a-lug riffery. Exodus has always liked it fast and furious, and they certainly don't disappoint with Exhibit B: The Human Condition. ~ Greg Prato

Format: CD

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/exodus-exhibit-b-human-condition_6pff3.jpg?v=1759248577
stryper-fallen
FALLEN
Personnel: Tim Gaines, Michael Sweet, Oz Fox (vocals); Paul McNamara (keyboards, synthesizer); Robert Sweet (drums).
Audio Mixers: Danny Bernini; Michael Sweet.
Recording information: SpiritHouse Studios, Northampton, MA.
Editor: Kenny Lewis.
Photographer: Alex Solca.
The eighth studio long player from the stalwart Christian hard rockers, Fallen finds Stryper offering up a fiery set of 12 faith-based rockers that skillfully blur the lines between groove-laden power metal and melody-driven classic rock. A surprisingly agile and meaty piece of work, especially for a group with three decades behind them, Fallen opens strong with the soaring "Yahweh," a hook-filled praise anthem that's bolstered by a framework that suggests Piece of Mind-era Iron Maiden via Jesus Christ Superstar. The rousing title track follows suit, pairing NWOBHM sonic austerity with a chorus that invokes the heyday of the sunset strip, minus the seediness of course. Elsewhere, mid-album cuts "Love You Like I Do" and "All Over Again," the former a nod to the melodic pop-metal of "Calling on You" and the latter a straight-up power ballad, should please Stryper fans craving a vintage yellow and black attack. Also, a faithful rendering of Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler-penned "After Forever," a track that's notable for its ardent Catholic themes, and the anthemic closer "King of Kings," impress with their technical acumen. Outside of a brief flirtation with secular metal in the early '90s, Stryper have always remained true to their convictions, both musically and narratively, and Fallen is no exception, with the band delivering a strong set of originals (and one choice cover) that do little to tarnish their reputation as one of Christian metal's leading lights. ~ James Christopher Monger

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 10/16/2015

Panic Station (Digital Download Card) is a Records & LPs from Motion City Soundtrack

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Motion-City-Soundtrack-Panic-Station-Digital-Download-Card_nsqvn.jpg?v=1758804141
gamma-ray-sigh-no-more
SIGH NO MORE
Personnel: Gamma Ray (background vocals); Ralf Scheepers (vocals); Dirk Schlachter, Kai Hansen (guitar); Piet Sielck (keyboards, background vocals); Tommy Hansen (keyboards); Uli Kusch (drums); Ralf K?hler, Tommy Newton (background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Tommy Newton.
Audio Remasterer: Eike Freese.
Recording information: KARO Studios, Brackel (05/1991-07/1991).
Illustrator: Herv? Monjeaud.
The first three records from Kai Hansen's band tried to follow a certain innovation/ evolution within German power metal's restricted scene. Sigh No More, the second of them, does not escape to this noble intention of the former Helloween guitarist. The record shows a band finding its identity through 11 cuts where various influences mark the route all along its path. It takes a series of bumps, where the peaks mark the creative apex of the group and the low ones border the dullest mediocrity. Probably, Sigh No More is the most innovative and imaginative effort from the German band, and the one that the passing of time digests with greater pride. The work begins with "Changes," a tune with a magnificently constructed refrain. Also, the haunting title song, the experimental "The Spirit," and the powerful "As Time Goes By," a song in which Ralf Scheepers' vocal skills are demonstrated to be enviable, stand out as the album's highlights. But overall, "One With the World" must be recognized as the record's indisputable masterpiece, a wrenching, rather old-fashioned anthemic tune ? la Manowar, with a perfect feeling to be shouted at the shows from the band. The rest of the record rambles along some similarly ambitious tracks, but with less brilliant results. After Sigh No More would come the irregular Insanity & Genius and later on Land of the Free, where the German guitarist and his troupe would finally find their longtime sought-after sound, a melody-based power metal sound that would definitively win them fans across genres. That would lead them to release more accessible and predictable albums year after year, less fissured than Sigh No More and surely without the same surprise capacity. [In 2002 the first seven Gamma Ray records were digitally remastered and enriched with bonus tracks, in addition to being displayed in digipack format, with some important visual changes in the original covers. As musicians, the Plasmatics were tight and not without imagination; their attack suggests guys who had been playing metal or hard rock who figured this punk rock stuff was going to be the next big thing, but rather than disguise their roots, guitarists Richie Stotts and Wes Beech were more than willing to let their doomstruck metal influences shine through on the instrumental breaks to tunes like "Monkey Suit" and "Concrete Shoes," and parts of New Hope suggest thrash metal arriving a few years early. However, as songwriters Stotts, Beech, and Rod Swenson (the band's manager and idea guy) didn't have all that much to say and not an especially compelling way of saying it. Stylistically, New Hope for the Wretched keeps going around in circles until it finally wears a groove into the floor, and the album's real weak spot is lead singer Wendy O. Williams, who hadn't been singing very long and delivers most of these tunes in a guttural bleat that suggests Stiv Bators with a mouthful of Novocain; she may well have known what to do on-stage, but in the studio her weaknesses were obvious and unavoidable. And while the album's great musical experiment -- the middle section of "Dream Lover," during which the musicians could neither see or hear one another -- may have been an interesting idea, the results suggest a roomful of college freshmen making their first stab at forming a noise band. A bit like Kiss' first three albums, New Hope for the Wretched is the work of a band struggling to make the excitement of their stage show work in the studio and falling short of the mark, though there are a few moments where the Plasmatics manage to get over on sheer sneering energy, one quality the microphones were able to capture. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Plasmatics-New-Hope-For-The-Wretched_ouxq6.jpg?v=1749745565
knxwledge-anthology-gatefold-lp-jacket-2-lps
Anthology (Gatefold LP Jacket) (2 Lp's)
DESCRIPTION
Originally released on double cassette by Leaving Records in 2013, Knxwledge's Anthology is now available on gatefold 2XLP vinyl. Lost Themes Remixed is bookended by abstract interpretations courtesy of Prurient, whose noise-damaged reworking of "Purgatory" evokes a netherworld even more vividly than the original thanks to the distortion charring its spectral tones, and Bill Kouligas, who delivers a simmering take on "Fallen." Other artists hew more closely to the traditional purpose of a remix: to make a song more danceable. ohGr adds an industrial groove to "Wraith," while Silent Servant's version of "Vortex" maintains an atmospheric, soundtrack-like vibe even as it emphasizes beats. Carpenter's Sacred Bones labelmates contribute some of the more attention-getting remixes, with Zola Jesus and Dean Hurley transforming "Night" into an inspired collaboration that balances Nika's sweeping vocals and Carpenter's signature keyboard arpeggios perfectly. Meanwhile, Blanck Mass' Benjamin John Power builds on the anthemic "Fallen" with his own shock-and-awe tactics. However, the brightest highlight belongs to J.G. Alice Cooper was at the forefront, joined by Harry Nilsson, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Keith Moon, and Micky Dolenz -- a crew so soused their tales became legend, even if the specifics of the debauchery were often forgotten. Forty years later, Alice Cooper revived the name Hollywood Vampires when he came to form a supergroup with Joe Perry and Johnny Depp. These three are the anchors in an open-door party where everybody is invited, providing you're already a classic rocker of some note. The joke of Hollywood Vampires is that all the songs apart from the two originals -- joint efforts between Depp and his compadre Bruce Witkin, Alice Cooper and his old producer Bob Ezrin, plus his new guitarist Tommy Henriksen -- are covers of songs by dead rockers, a gag that is easy to miss because the songs are the kinds of standards that function as classic rock wallpaper: they're always there, so they rarely evoke memories of the long-gone Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, and John Lennon. Instead, in the words of the still-living J. Geils Band, this ain't nothin' but a house party, a raucous celebration of old-time Sunset Strip rock & roll that only lets the sleazy good times lift when Paul McCartney swings by to sing "Come and Get It." That's still a blast, though, because it's clear Sir Paul enjoys playing with these louts as much as they enjoy playing with him and, despite all the big names packed into the studio, the key to the whole shebang is Alice Cooper himself. He's the ringleader, pushing people to the mike, turning "Itchycoo Park" into metallic vaudeville and doing justice to T. Rex. While The Beast in Its Tracks documented Ritter's often unsettled state of mind after the collapse of his marriage, 2015's Sermon on the Rocks is the sound of a man on the rebound, and while the album is hardly sunshine and cold beer throughout, these songs clearly reflect Ritter's tenacity and spirit rather than the damaged emotions that were front and center two years earlier. "Getting Ready to Get Down" finds Ritter offering a small-town girl some advice to forget Bible college and see a bit of the big bad world, and the tale is told with the swagger of a guy who wouldn't mind showing her a few things himself. And while "Where the Night Goes" and "Birds of the Meadow" can both be read as messages to a former love, they also speak with a confidence and wit that make it clear Ritter is on a fresh road and enjoying the ride (and "Lighthouse Fire" is a more passionate declaration of attraction for someone new on his radar). "Cumberland" is a number that shouts with the joy of new experiences, while "Homecoming" revels in the pleasures of the familiar, and if "Henrietta, Indiana" and "Seeing Me 'Round" make it clear Ritter hasn't lost touch with his serious side, they're both written with sincerity and compassion. Ritter's singing is as strong and expressive as his songwriting, and he and co-producer Trina Shoemaker have given the album a lively sound that suits the album's emotional palette. Sermon on the Rocks is an album where Josh Ritter allows himself to have some fun while showing that his skills as a songwriter have emerged unscathed after his divorce, and it suggests that his future is as bright as ever. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/josh-ritter-sermon-on-the-rocks_3XlcV.jpg?v=1741073515
little-richard-heres-little-richard
Here'S Little Richard

Here'S Little Richard is a Records & LPs from Little Richard

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/little-richard-heres-little-richard_Yh7X2.jpg?v=1758752628
pears-go-to-prison
GO TO PRISON

GO TO PRISON is a Records & LPs from Pears

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

BATTERING RAM is a Records & LPs from Saxon

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

TracksCredits
1 Eyes of Love
2 I Wanna Dance with You
3 Let Us
4 Let's Be Friends
5 E.O.D. Platinum, number one, and nominated for a Mercury Prize in Disclosure's native U.K., it was also Grammy-nominated in the U.S. "Latch," the album's propellant, primed vocalist Sam Smith for stardom. The Lawrence brothers subsequently worked with Nile Rodgers and Mary J. Blige, remixed Usher's "Good Kisser," and released a pair of club tracks that, more than anything else, showed that fame wasn't stalling their productivity. In May 2015, the garage-flavored "Holding On" -- co-written by Jimmy Napes, a contributor to the debut's three biggest hits -- appeared as the first proper single from the second Disclosure album. It neatly integrated additional songwriting input and a lead from Blue Note jazz vocalist Gregory Porter and, like much of what preceded it, was swift and full of friction yet measured and tasteful. Inferior second pre-album single "Omen" outperformed it, most likely because it featured Smith. The contrast between those two singles is a running theme on Caracal, where tracks featuring lower-profile vocalists regularly upstage those fronted by chart-topping stars. Smith, Lorde, Miguel, and the Weeknd provide the album with a lot of star power, not much else. The last-mentioned contributor, for instance, opens the album by singing 100% "on-brand" lyrics that seem generated rather than written -- so much so that they can be summarized as "vampire Weeknd" -- albeit with a thrown-in reference to the wild cat that inspired the album's title. The Lawrences' taste in upcoming talent and ability to assimilate it into their sound, however, is faultless. Fellow U.K. natives Kwabs and Nao are responsible for a pair of irrefutable R&B jams, the vocalists' turns recalling, respectively, James "D Train" Williams and young Deniece Williams atop some of the producers' most detailed and sumptuous work yet. The lighter cuts, most notably the one that features Lion Babe's Jillian Hervey, tend to stick with as much immediacy, and are as full-bodied as the slower numbers. Although the tracks rarely surprise, frequently falling back on familiar sounds and structures -- loping basslines and synthesizer shadings that escalate at the same tempo always arrive on time, for instance -- they're as well-built as those of the debut, and the Lawrences, along with their songwriting partners, cover the ups and downs of falling in and out of love in sharper fashion. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/16/2015

Personnel: Iggy Pop (vocals, guitar); Ricky Gardiner (guitar); David Bowie (keyboards); Tony Sales (bass); Hunt Sales (drums).
Recorded live at the Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, Ohio on March 21, 1977. Includes liner notes by Dave Thompson.
It would be fair to say that David Bowie saved Iggy Pop's skinny ass more than a couple of times. In 1976, as Iggy made strides to get his life back on track (following the demise of the seminal Stooges), the pair would join forces on what would arguably turn out to be one of Iggy's best solo albums, The Idiot. The album would initiate the first in a series of love/hate collaborations between Detroit's bastard son and the Thin White Duke. With The Idiot in the can, Iggy set out to tour the U.K. and America, using the future Tin Machine rhythm section of Hunt Sales (drums) and Tony Sales (bass), as well as Bowie guitarist Ricky Gardiner. Bowie would also volunteer his services by contributing keyboards, thus enhancing the quartet's sound. This live recording, taken from the band's gig at the Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, OH, showcases Iggy and company in all their cookie-cutter glory. It's clear from the recording (and the album's excellent liner notes) that Iggy looked at this tour as his chance to do right. The live music that comes out of the pairing clearly shows passion but ultimately lacks the abandon of past as well as later Iggy tours. Although well-executed and certainly well-rehearsed, songs like the cathartic "Raw Power" and "1969" are siphoned by the politeness of it all. Some, however, do work. Tracks like "Search and Destroy" and "T.V. Eye," when broken down into these slower and more orchestrated arrangements, sound good. However, other tracks like the punishing "Dirt" and the boogie-woogie, sounded-like-a-good-idea-on paper romp through "No Fun" don't deliver on the promise made by the originals. The topnotch recording itself is right off the soundboard and sounds timeless. As with its predecessor, USA was also issued as a sonic cenotaph of the concurrently defunct Krim. So insistent that the band would not be resurrected, Fripp concluded the LP's liner notes at the time with another three-letter epitaph: "R.I.P." The 1973/1974 King Crimson included the collective efforts of Fripp (guitar/mellotron), David Cross (violin), John Wetton (bass/vocals), and Bill Bruford (drums/percussion). USA also includes notable violin overdubs by Eddie Jobson on the tracks "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Pt. 2" and "21st Century Schizoid Man," as well as electric piano addendums to "Lament." The opening drone re-creates the typical performance prelude, lifted directly from the Fripp and Brian Eno sonic sculpture No Pussyfooting (1973). The brusque juxtaposition of the ethereal opening to the aggressive "Larks' Tongues in Aspic, Pt. 2" jolts the audience into the rips and snorts found during this tautly rendered instrumental. The readings of "Lament" and "Exiles" demonstrate this band's overwhelming sonic sensibilities. They are able to contrast and incorporate thick, viscous melodies and rhythms with alternately underlying sensitive, as well as ultimately beautiful, musical responses. A majority of the release is taken from a performance on June 28, 1974, at the Casino in Asbury Park, NJ, with the notable exception of "21st Century Schizoid Man," which was recorded two nights later at the Palace Theater in Providence, RI.
