dance music has provided a home base for any of the musical journeys her widely varied career has seen her take. 1987's YOU CAN DANCE found the reigning queen of pop revisiting some of her more famous works, courtesy of the mixing skills of some of the friends she'd made along the way, notably NY DJ and mix artist Jellybean Benitez (a name which was inseparable from the dance music genre at the time). Producer of Madonna's breakthrough "Holiday," he returns here with two slick remixes of the track, highlighting some of its many catchy instrumental nuances. The quintessential Madonna dance track, "Into The Groove," which inspired the album's title, bears the mark of editor Shep Pettibone. Pettibone's reassembling of the track turns it into an all-new dance experience, with inspired breaks and gliding accompaniment. The romantic classic "Over And Over" reinvents the original, augmenting Nile Rodgers's tight production with extra percussion and keyboards.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Madonna-YOU-CAN-DANCE_HRfc2_2730a3bb-75d2-487f-aee4-7863983fed07.jpg?v=1759386223
prince-around-the-world-in-a-day
AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY
Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Dr. Fink (vocals, keyboards); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Novi Novog, Vaj (violin); David Coleman (cello, oud, percussion, background vocals); Suzie Katayama (cello); Sid Page, Marcy Dictorow (strings); Eddie M. Many critics at the time dismissed AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY as a turkey follow-up to the outstanding PURPLE RAIN. However, the achingly beautiful ballad "Condition of the Heart," and the stunning "The Ladder," as well as the pop classic "Raspberry Beret," could easily sit beside the band's best material. Even more than usual, Cooder refuses to recognize borders -- geographical or musical -- presenting "Stand By Me" as a gospel song with a norte?o arrangement, or giving the Jim Reeves country-pop classic, "He'll Have to Go," a bolero rhythm, featuring the interplay of Flaco Jimenez's accordion and Pat Rizzo's alto sax. Elsewhere, he teams with a pair of Hawaiian greats -- steel guitarist and singer Gabby Pahinui and slack key guitar master Atta Isaacs -- on the Hank Snow hit "Yellow Roses" and the beautiful instrumental "Chloe." If Cooder's approach to the music is stylistically diverse, his choice of material certainly follows suit. Bookended by a couple of Leadbelly compositions, Chicken Skin Music sports a collection of songs ranging from the aforementioned tracks to the charming old minstrel/medicine show number "I Got Mine" and the syncopated R&B of "Smack Dab in the Middle." Also included is Appalachian songwriter Blind Alfred Reed's "Always Lift Him Up," complete with a Hawaiian gospel tune, "Kanaka Wai Wai," woven into the instrumental section. As he explains in the album's liner notes, Cooder understands the connection between these seemingly disparate styles. This is not merely eclecticism for its own sake. Harvey .
The raw immediacy and tight instrumental attack of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's self-titled debut album were startling and impressive in 1965, but the following year, the group significantly upped the ante with its second LP, East-West. The debut showed that Butterfield and his bandmates could cut tough, authentic blues (not a given for an integrated band during the era in which fans were still debating if a white boy could play the blues) with the energy of rock & roll, but East-West was a far more ambitious set, with the band showing an effective command of jazz, Indian raga, and garagey proto-psychedelia as well as razor-sharp electric blues. Butterfield was the frontman, and his harp work was fierce and potent, but the core of the band was the dueling guitar work of Mike Bloomfield and Elvin Bishop, especially Bloomfield's ferocious, acrobatic solos, while Mark Naftalin's keyboards added welcome washes of melodic color, and the rhythm section of bassist Jerome Arnold and drummer Billy Davenport were capable of both the rock-solid support of veteran blues players and the more flexible and artful pulse of a jazz combo, rising and relaxing with the dynamics of a performance. The Butterfield Blues Band sounded muscular and exciting on classic blues workouts like "Walkin' Blues," "Two Trains Running," and "I Got a Mind to Give Up Living," but the highlights came when the band pushed into new territory, such as the taut New Orleans proto-funk of "Get Out of My Life, Woman," the buzzy and mildly trippy "Mary, Mary," and especially two lengthy instrumental workouts, the free-flowing jazz of Nat Adderley's "Work Song" and the title track, a fiery mix of blues, psychedelia, Indian musical patterns, and several other stops in between, with Butterfield, Bloomfield, and Bishop blowing for all their worth. East-West would prove to be a pivotal album in the new blues-rock movement, and it was the Paul Butterfield Blues Band's greatest achievement; Bloomfield would be gone by the time they cut their next LP to form the Electric Flag, and as good as Bishop was, losing the thrust and parry between the two guitarists was a major blow. But East-West captures a great group in high flight as the bandmembers join together in something even more remarkable than their estimable skills as individuals would suggest, and its importance as a nexus point between rock, blues, jazz, and world music cannot be overestimated. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: AAD

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Paul-Blues-Band-Butterfield-EAST-WEST_FFfG8_1a2e42a0-44e4-40f6-b51b-559b5f4e07cf.jpg?v=1740710096
too-hort-life-is-too-short-dirty-version
LIFE IS...TOO SHORT (DIRTY VERSION)
Personnel: Todd "Too Short" Shaw (rap vocals, keyboards, drum programming), Al Eaton (guitars, keyboards), E. It is credited to "The Stills-Young Band," which is to say, Stephen Stills and his band with Young added, and the two divide up the songwriting and lead vocals, five for Young, four for Stills. The pairing, though it proved short-lived and had, in fact, ended before this album was released, must have seemed commercially logical. Like Young, Stills had seen his record sales decline after a successful period following the 1970 breakup of CSNY. So had erstwhile partners David Crosby and Graham Nash, but they had returned to Top Ten, gold-selling status in the fall of 1975 with their Wind on the Water duo album. Why couldn't Stills and Young do the same thing? Maybe they could have (and, actually, this was the first gold album for either in two years) if they had made a better record together. Young's songs were pleasant newly written throwaways with the exception of the title track, a trunk song he had written as a tribute to an old car. Stills' compositions seemed more seriously intended, but still were not substantial. The playing, largely handled by the professional sessionman types in Stills' band, was far smoother than what one was accustomed to in a Young album. The result was a listenable record, but not a compelling one, and thus well below Young's usual standard and Stills' best. ~ William Ruhlmann

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Stephen-Stills-Neil-Young-LONG-MAY-YOU-RUN_kdPzq.jpg?v=1740710724
todd-rundgren-something-anything
Todd Rundgren SOMETHING / ANYTHING

Personnel: Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar); Todd Rundgren (various instruments); Edward Olmos (vocals, clarinet); Brooks Baxes, Richard Corey, Henry Fanton, Hope Ruff, Anthony Carrabba, Dennis Cooley, Cecilia Norfleet, Vicki Sue Robinson (vocals); Ben Keith (guitar, steel guitar, pedal steel guitar); Ralph Wash, Robbie Kogel, Robbie Kagale, Rick Vito (guitar); John Siegler (cello); Brother Gene Dinwiddie (saxophone, tenor saxophone); Jackie Kelso (saxophone); John Kelson, Jr. (tenor saxophone); Barry Rodgers (trombone); Charlie Schoning (piano); Stu Woods (bass instrument); Hunt Sales, John Siomos (drums); Serge Katzen (congas); Amos Garrett, Rick Derringer (guitar); Jim Horn (saxophone, tenor saxophone); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone, horns); Randy Brecker (trumpet, horns); Barry Rogers (trombone); Mark "Moogy" Klingman (piano, organ, keyboards); Billy Mundi (drums).
Recording information: Bearsville Sound Studios, Bearsville, NY; Id Sound, Los Angeles, CA; Record Plant Studios, New York, NY.
Photographers: James Lowe; Todd Rundgren.
Arranger: Todd Rundgren.
After two albums, Todd Rundgren had one hit and a burgeoning cult following, plus growing respect as a hitmaking record producer. There's no question he was busy, but as it turns out, all this work only scratched the surface of his ambition. He had decided to abandon the Runt pretense and recorded a full double album by himself (save for one side). Others had recorded one-man albums before, most notably Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, but Rundgren -- without borrowing musically from either artist -- captured the homemade ambience of McCartney with the visionary feel of Music of My Mind, adding an encyclopedic knowledge of pop music from Gilbert & Sullivan through Jimi Hendrix, plus the crazed zeal of a pioneer. Listening to Something/Anything? is a mind-altering trip in itself, no matter how many instantly memorable, shamelessly accessible pop songs are scattered throughout the album. Each side of the double album is a concept onto itself. The first side is "a bouquet of ear-catching melodies"; side two is "the cerebral side"; on side three "the kid gets heavy"; side four is his mock pop operetta, recorded with a full band including the Sales brothers. It gallops through everything -- Carole King tributes ("I Saw the Light"), classic ballads ("Hello It's Me," "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference"), Motown ("Wolfman Jack"), blinding power pop ("Couldn't I Just Tell You"), psychedelic hard rock ("Black Maria"), pure weirdness ("I Went to the Mirror"), blue-eyed soul ("Dust in the Wind"), and scores of brilliant songs that don't fall into any particular style ("Cold Morning Light," "It Takes Two to Tango"). It's an amazing journey that's remarkably unpretentious. He may have contributed self-penned liner notes, but Rundgren peppers his writing with self-aware, self-deprecating asides, and he also indulges his bizarre sense of humor with gross-outs ("Piss Aaron") and sheer quirkiness, such as an aural tour of the studio at the beginning of side two. Something/Anything? has a ton of loose ends throughout: plenty of studio tricks, slight songs (but no filler), snippets of dialogue, and purposely botched beginnings, but all these throwaways simply add context -- they're what makes the album into a kaleidoscopic odyssey through the mind of an insanely gifted pop music obsessive. Rundgren occasionally touched on the sheer brilliance of Something/Anything? in his later work, but this extraordinary double album is the one time where his classicist songcraft and messy genius converged to create an utterly unique, glorious record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

Genre: Pop

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Todd-Rundgren-SOMETHING-ANYTHING_iMbH3.jpg?v=1737583992
barbra-streisand-guilty
GUILTY
Personnel includes: Barbra Streisand (vocals); Barry Gibb (vocals, acoustic guitar); Richard Tee (electric guitar, keyboards); Cornell Dupree, Lee Ritenour (guitar); Whit Snider (baritone saxophone); Ken Faulk (trumpet); Jerry Peel (French horn); Peter Graves (trombone); George Bitzer (piano, synthesizer); David Hungate, Harold Cowart (bass); Steve Gadd, Bernard Lupe (drums); Joe Lala (percussion); Denise Maynelli, Myrna Matthews, Marti McCall (background vocals).
Producers include: Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten, Karl Richardson.
Recorded at Criteria, Middle Ear, Miami, Florida; Sound Labs Inc., Hollywood, California; Mediasound Studios, New York, New York.
Personnel: Barbra Streisand (vocals); Barbra Streisand; Neal Bonsanti, Dan Bonsanti (tenor saxophone); Whitt Sidner, Whit Sidener (baritone saxophone); Russ Freeland, Mike Katz (trombone); David Hungate, Howard Cowart (bass guitar); Myrna Mathews (background vocals); Barry Gibb (vocals, acoustic guitar, background vocals); Pete Carr (guitar, acoustic guitar); George Terry (guitar, slide guitar, gut-string guitar); Cornell Dupree, Lee Ritenour (guitar); Richard Tee (electric guitar, piano, grand piano, electric piano, Clavinet); Hollis "Bud" Burridge, Kenneth Faulk, Brett Murphey (trumpet); Jerry Peel (French horn); Peter Graves (trombone, bass trombone); George Bitzer (piano, grand piano, electric piano, synthesizer); Albhy Galuten (synthesizer); Steve Gadd , Dennis Bryon , Bernard Lupe (drums); Joe Lala (congas, cowbells, cymbals, maracas, shaker, tambourine, timbales, triangle, percussion); Denise Maynelli, Myrna Matthews, Marti McCall (background vocals).
Recording information: Criteria Studios, Middle Ear, Inc., Miami, FL; Media Sound Studios, New York, NY; Mediasound Studios, NY; Sound Labs Studios, Inc., Hollywoord, CA.
Unknown Contributor Role: Joe Lala.
Released in September 1980, GUILTY was Barbra Streisand's best-selling album to date, moving in excess of 20 million units. ELO'S GREATEST HITS 1973-1977, originally released in 1979, showcases this era magnificently. All 11 of these tracks were released as singles, some of them slightly remixed and edited from their album versions, and most of them were both AM and FM radio hits. Of all the bands to get lumped in under the "hair metal" tag, Kix was the one of the most unique and adventurous. In fact, the "hair metal" tag was unfair to the band since its pop-metal stylings drew as much inspiration from bubblegum pop and new wave as it did from hard rock. This impressive debut finds its one of a kind sound fully realized: "Heartbeat" welds a yearning pop melody straight out of a teen idol hit onto a bouncing, staccato new wave guitar riff worthy of the Cars, and "Contrary Mary" weds the bubblegum chant of the title to a guitar riff that sounds like the main lick from "Day Tripper" turned inside out. Other standout tracks include the cowbell-driven hormonal anthem "Love at First Sight" and "The Kid," a anti-brat revenge fantasy reminiscent of "Beat on the Brat" by the Ramones. Each of these songs has a deliciously pop quality to their melodies and hooks, yet retain a heavy hard rock sound thanks to amped-up guitar riffs and pounding tempos. The one real downside of the album is that producer Tom Allom, best known for his work with Judas Priest, tries a little too hard to shoehorn the band into a hard rock style at times, resulting in a repetitive, no-frills production style that fails to live up to the ambitious genre bending of the songs. Despite this problem, the infectiousness of the material and the band's irrepressible good cheer shines through, making Kix well worth a spin for anyone who enjoys the lighter, poppier side of hard rock. ~ Donald A. Given the population of colorful characters who may or may not be real people that populate her songs -- Chuck E., Bragger, Kid Sinister, and others -- she also might have had Bruce Springsteen in her bloodline (that is, the Springsteen of his first two albums), and her jazzbo sensibility suggests Mose Allison as a grandfather. Producers Lenny Waronker and Russ Titelman, who know all about assisting quirky singer/songwriters with their visions, have brought in a studio full of master session musicians, many of them with jazz credentials, and apparently instructed them to follow Jones' stop-and-start, loud-and-soft vocalizing, then overdubbed string parts here and there. The music thus has a sprung rhythmic feel that follows the contours of Jones' impressionistic stories about scuffling people on the streets and in the bars. There is an undertow of melancholy that becomes more overt toward the end, as the narrator's friends and lovers clear out, leaving her "Standing on the corner/All alone," as she sings in the final song, "After Hours (Twelve Bars Past Goodnight)." It's a long way, if only 40 minutes or so, from the frolicsome opener, "Chuck E.'s in Love," which had concluded that he was smitten by "the little girl who's singin' this song." But then, the romance of the street is easily replaced by its loneliness. Rickie Lee Jones is an astounding debut album that simultaneously sounds like a synthesis of many familiar styles and like nothing that anybody's ever done before, and it heralds the beginning of a potentially important career. ~ William Ruhlmann

Genre: Rock and Pop

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Rickie-Lee-Jones-RICKIE-LEE-JONES_Z8aUU.jpg?v=1758792605
fleetwood-mac-heroes-are-hard-to-find
Fleetwood Mac HEROES ARE HARD TO FIND

Fleetwood Mac: Bob Welch (vocals, guitar, vibraphone); Christine McVie (vocals, keyboards, Arp string synthesizer); John McVie (bass); Mick Fleetwood (drums, percussion).
Additional personnel: Pete Kleinow (pedal steel guitar).
Recorded at Angel City Sound, Los Angeles, California in July 1974.
When Fleetwood Mac cut 1974's HEROES ARE HARD TO FIND, the band had been winnowed down to a quartet. Dylan focuses on the older material in his repertoire, reaching back to the '60s for such tunes as "Blowin' In The Wind," "All I Really Want To Do" and "The Times They Are A-Changin'." Wisely, he also includes a couple of songs from his finest '70s album, BLOOD ON THE TRACKS. These tunes, "Shelter From The Storm" and "Simple Twist of Fate," differ radically from the original recorded versions, as has always been Dylan's wont in a performance situation.
One thing that differentiates BUDOKAN from Dylan's other live albums, is the approach toward arrangements. Both earlier and later concert recordings present Dylan as the leader of a ragtag gang that blazes its way through the tunes in a spontaneous manner. Here, backed by studio vets like Ian Wallace, Alan Pasqua and Steven Soles as well as a three-woman choir, Dylan takes a much more thought-out, even "professional-sounding" approach, to the extent that this could almost pass for a studio re-recording of some of his finest compositions.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Bob-Dylan-AT-BUDOKAN_gY7Dt_ddabe370-f5d2-4b96-8097-34e461812d7d.jpg?v=1759345905
lost-boys-o-s-t-lost-boys-o-s-t
LOST BOYS / O.S.T.
Personnel: Lou Gramm (vocals).
Audio Remixers: Chris Thomas ; Bob Clearmountain.
Unknown Contributor Roles: Tim Cappelio; Echo & the Bunnymen; Eddie & The Tide; Gerard McMann; Brian Alexander Robertson; INXS; Jimmy Barnes; Lou Gramm; Mummy Calls; Richie Zito; Roger Daltrey; Thomas Newman.
Joel Schumacher's 1987 film The Lost Boys capitalized on a temporary lull in horror movies in the late '80s and created a heavily music-video-influenced vampire homage with enough campy humor, heavy metal costumes, and hunky stars to put a fresh spin on the genre. An amusing piece of eye candy spiked by a few creepy moments, the movie, in typical '80s style, relies heavily on the soundtrack to bolster its emotional core. The soundtrack, like the film, works great on the surface -- but don't go much deeper. A mix of covers and bombastic '80s pop originals, the songs work best when they concentrate on the horror factor. Echo & the Bunnymen turn in an excellent cover of the Doors' "People Are Strange" that has a bouncier, more melodic touch than the original. Jimmy Barnes and INXS' "Good Times" is an energetic rocker used to personify the party-hardy SoCal atmosphere of the film. With song titles and choruses that seemed to reflect all that was good and strong in America, belying songs that were about everything that was going wrong, BORN IN THE USA was one of those cultural events that resonated with just about everybody--from both Republican and Democratic politicians, to Vietnam veterans (the title-track was a brutal account of a vet's homecoming), to social critics who found layers of meaning in these tales of disillusioned America, to dance-music DJs who found palpable beats in the dark passions of "Dancing In The Dark" and "Cover Me," to fist-raising pop fans who turned seven of these songs into top-10 singles and kept BORN IN THE USA in a year-long battle for the top spot on the album chart. It was as if no other album mattered that year.
Musically, BORN IN THE USA was as lean and muscular as Springsteen himself, trading in the E Street Band's over-the-top saxophone-and-piano sound of old for a sleeker, forward-driving guitar-and-synthesizer feel (foreshadowing a future in which long-time sax sidekick Clarence Clemons would be gone, and mild-mannered pianist/synth-player Roy Bittan would emerge as a full-blown collaborator). Continuing in the vein of NEBRASKA, the songs were plainspoken, folk-derived tunes, although this time they leapt into big, sing-along choruses. And, seemingly, the whole world sang along.

Genre: Rock and Pop

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Bruce-Springsteen-BORN-IN-THE-USA_WcMPL.jpg?v=1758950758
little-feat-last-record-album
LAST RECORD ALBUM
Little Feat: Lowell George (vocals, slide guitar); Paul Barrere (vocals); Bill Payne (keyboards, vocals); Ken Gradney (bass); Richie Hayward (drums, vocals); Sam Clayton (congas).
Additional personnel: John Hall (guitar); Valerie Carter (background vocals).
The two bonus tracks are from the live album WAITING FOR COLUMBUS.
Personnel: Lowell George, Paul Barr?re (vocals, guitar); Bill Payne (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer, percussion); Richie Hayward (vocals, drums); Sam Clayton (vocals, congas, percussion); Fran Tate, Valerie Carter (vocals); John Hall (guitar).
Many remember their Little Feat albums by which wonderful Neon Park illustration was on the cover. His first couple of releases found Bruce working out his fascination with Dylan and Van Morrison on earthy, wordy, folk-rock-R&B tunes full of soul and punch. On BORN TO RUN, Springsteen became even more ambitious, synthesizing Spectorian production with Orbison-esque drama and Duane Eddy-influenced guitar work, creating something grand enough to be called rock opera but too proletarian to ever claim that title.
BORN TO RUN was also the first album where the Boss began to crystallize his recurring theme of working class America's doomed-but-passionate rage against its circumstances. With the earnestness and emotion that bursts forth from Springsteen's street poems, the album is never less than exhilarating, and songs like "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out" (a tongue-in-cheek history of the E Street Band) provide humor. "She's The One" puts the Bo Diddley beat to its most effective post-'50s use, and the title track is Springsteen's quintessential underdog epic.

Genre: Oldies

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Bruce-Springsteen-BORN-TO-RUN_8LVzt.jpg?v=1759435506
lou-reed-new-york
NEW YORK
Personnel includes: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); Mike Rathke (guitar); Rob Wasserman, Fred Maher (bass, drums); Moe Tucker (percussion); Dion DiMucci (background vocals).
Recorded at Media Sound, New York, New York.
Filmed live at Theatre St. Denis, Montreal, Canada.
Arguably the finest album of Reed's solo career, NEW YORK hails back to the days of the Velvets with its no-nonsense approach and unflinchingly sardonic lyrics. Rothschild.
As the '60s drew to a close, it was a heavy time for the quickly crumbling hippie movement that had reached its apex just a few years earlier in 1967's Summer of Love. Death and violence were pervasive in the form of the Manson murders, fatalities at the Altamont concert, and the ongoing loss of young lives in Vietnam despite the best efforts of anti-war activists and peace-seeking protesters. Difficult times were also upon the Grateful Dead, unofficial house band of San Francisco's Summer of Love festivities and outspoken advocates of psychedelic experimentation both musical and chemical. The excessive studio experimentation that resulted in their trippy but disorienting third album, Aoxomoxoa, had left the band in considerable debt to their record label, and their stress wasn't helped at all by a drug bust that had members of the band facing jail time. The rough road the Dead were traveling down seemed congruent with the hard changes faced by the youth counterculture that birthed them. Fourth studio album Workingman's Dead reflects both the looming darkness of its time, and the endless hope and openness to possibility that would become emblematic of the Dead as their legacy grew. For a group already established as exploratory free-form rockers of the highest acclaim, Workingman's Dead's eight tunes threw off almost all improvisatory tendencies in favor of spare, thoughtful looks at folk, country, and American roots music with more subdued sounds than the band had managed up until then. The songs also focused more than ever before on singing and vocal harmonies, influenced in no small way by a growing friendship with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The band embraced complex vocal arrangements with campfire-suited folk on "Uncle John's Band" and the psychedelic cowboy blues of "High Time."
Before they blasted off into hallucinatory rock as the Grateful Dead, several founding members had performed as Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions, a group that played traditional jug band music with earnest, heartfelt appreciation. Those early influences came into sharp focus on the bluegrass rhythms and hillbilly harmonies of "Cumberland Blues" and the glistening pedal steel and shuffling drums of "Dire Wolf." The more rocking songs add to the album's brooding feel with "New Speedway Boogie" directly addressing the violence at Altamont, and "Casey Jones," which appeared at first to be a lighthearted celebration of cocaine, but was really a lament for troubled times that felt like they were spinning off the rails.
The abrupt shift toward sublime acoustic sounds on Workingman's Dead completely changed what the Grateful Dead meant to their listeners at large. The enormous risk they took in changing their sound entirely resulted in a heartbreakingly beautiful, unquestionably pure statement and one of the more important documents of its time. They'd continue this trend on the even more roots-minded American Beauty, recorded later the same year, but the limitlessness, fearlessness, and true power of the band began here. ~ Fred Thomas

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Grateful-Dead-WORKINGMANS-DEAD_IesAJ_00948846-e75a-40f6-967c-38ca425553ae.jpg?v=1759370163
suicidal-tendencies-join-the-army
JOIN THE ARMY
Suicidal Tendencies: Mike Muir (vocals); Rocky George (guitar); Louiche Mayorga (bass); R.J. But Roth had already assembled a killer solo band, including ex-Frank Zappa guitarist Steve Vai, ex-Talas bassist Billy Sheehan, and ex-Maynard Ferguson drummer Gregg Bissonette, to record songs for the movie's soundtrack. Instead of scrapping the tracks, he incorporated them into his first solo album, 1986's EAT 'EM AND SMILE.
SMILE remains Roth's best solo work. The rest of the tunes reveal that Iron Butterfly did indeed possess some pop sensibility to leaven the heaviness; "Flowers and Beads" in particular is simultaneously a romantic '60s pop-rock ballad and a subtle but surprising swipe at flower power culture.

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Iron-Butterfly-IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA_5MEFG.jpg?v=1740686412
leon-redbone-branch-to-branch
BRANCH TO BRANCH
Producers: Beryl Handler, Joel Dorn, Leon Redbone.
Personnel: Leon Redbone (vocals, guitar); Mitch Holder (guitar); Timothy May (banjo); Jim Rothermel (clarinet, saxophone); Bobby Gordon (clarinet, alto saxophone); Jack Maheu, Victor Morosco (clarinet); Vince Giordano (bass saxophone, drums); Ed Polcer (trumpet); Tom Artin, Robert Payne (trombone); Jonathan Dorn, Jim Self (tuba); Dr. John (piano, drums); Terry Waldo (piano); Howard Pfeifer (keyboards); Michael Braun, Grady Tate, Ralph Humphrey (drums).
Recording information: Atlantic Recording Studios, New York, NY; Burbank Studios, Burbank, CA; HIt Factory; Media Sound Studios.
Arrangers: Dick Halligan; Leon Redbone.
This is as extravagant and complicated a studio production as any of Leon Redbone's releases. Complete details about the musicians involved in each session are printed in miniscule yellow type of the eyestrain-inducing variety, perhaps a gesture at making younger listeners feel more sympathetic to the elderly music fans who would have been old enough to remember some of this material first-hand even back in the early '80s. Other songs are so familiar that recognition is not an issue; the question would be more appropriately, why bother? But questions of taste are not really a subject for this performer, who once having established his shtick and the prerequisite of technical talent required to pull it off, created albums that inevitably mix the sublime with the totally boring. Disastrous moves here include a weak Hank Williams cover, since expressing sincere emotion is not really in Redbone's bones. "Prairie Lullaby" is pretty sappy as well, and not really the sort of thing someone as immersed in vintage music as Redbone should have wanted to create. The tracks featuring Dr. John come off much better, examples of rollicking interplay that producer Beryl Handler, whose name even implies a hands-on touch, is wise to leave in a fairly spontaneous mode. While Redbone's performance of "My Blue Heaven" is fairly hack, a good rhythm section with bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Grady Tate certainly does a good job on the backup. ~ Eugene Chadbourne

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Leon-Redbone-BRANCH-TO-BRANCH_FSXsw.jpg?v=1759045731
stacey-q-better-than-heaven
Better Than Heaven
TracksCredits
1 Two of Hearts
2 We Connect
3 Insecurity
4 Better Than Heaven
5 Don't Let Me Down
6 Music Out of Bounds
7 Love or Desire
8 Don't Break My Heart
9 He Doesn't Understand
10 Dancing Nowhere

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 10/25/1990

Personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar, piano); Theresa Adams (cello); Paul Horn (flute, clarinet); Jim Horn (baritone saxophone); Milt Holland (percussion).
Joni Mitchell's third release found her moving away from the wistful folk of her debut and CLOUDS, branching out into the progressive pop and jazz elements that would define her best work. Recording information: Record Plant, Sausalito, CA. Director: Van Morrison. Photographer: Rudolph Legname. Morrison kicked off the '80s with a new musical direction, and BEAUTIFUL VISION marks that turning point. Though Van was a lifelong devotee of American roots music, he put his R&B influences on the backburner for a while, instead pursuing the more spiritual side of his muse, which had always been present, but never given this much room to roam since his very first release, ASTRAL WEEKS. An important element here is the synthesizer and trumpet work of Mark Isham, which provide spacious, ambient musical textures, upon which Van's spiritual insights float. Detractors claim that this period in Morrison's artistic development (a process that continued unabated throughout his entire career), was too mellow, too new-agey. What they fail to grasp is the fact that Morrison was probably the only artist capable of utilizing the very elements they bemoan and not turning it into a goopy, pseudo-mystical mess. The man has a genuine gift for articulating the spiritual. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, and the rhythm section, on loan from Howling Wolf, swings like mad. The only fly in the ointment is the fairly primitive production, which often makes Mark Naftalin's keyboards sound like a horde of angry bees, but that's a small criticism in the face of blues playing as passionate and accomplished as this.
