Gone are the moody, silky textures and glissando moves of Time Out, or Time Further Out. In fact, of all the \"Time\" recordings, this is the least commercial and, in places, almost hard bop-oriented among them. This set goes beyond the entire West Coast idea as well. That's not to say there are no ballads -\"\"Softly, William, Softly\"\" is one of the most gorgeous ballads Brubeck ever composed, with a memorable solo by Paul Desmond, who plays a slow, bluesy articulation over the pianist's augmented harmonic changes. But there's so much more. The title track has Stravinsky-esque chords that introduce a delicate theme, which disintegrates into a dissonant swing. There is also Brubeck variation on \"Frankie and Johnnie,\" on \"He Done Her Wrong.\" This track comes charging out of the box ? la the Ramsey Lewis trio in a fit of pure one-four-five groove, with Desmond playing ostinato throughout the chorus. And here, Brubeck shows his love of tradition: Inside his solo, comprised of chords and striated intervallic figures that are just off the harmonic series, he never leaves the original behind; it is always readily evoked at any moment in the tune. The set closes with \"Cassandra,\" a piece with sleight-of-hand rhythms and fleet soloing by the pianist and Desmond. Brubeck himself comes out of the melody with a series of 16th notes that blaze into 32nds before he comes back to the changes for Desmond. All the while, Joe Morello is triple-timing the band even in the slower passages just to keep the pulse on target as Gene Wright and Brubeck move all around the time figures to create a sense of space around Desmond's solo. The set's compiler, David Wells, does a great job of sprinkling in some well-known artists like Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, and Buzzcocks, critical faves like the Monochrome Set, and power pop heroes such as Eddie \u0026amp; the Hot Rods and Bram Tchaikovsky among the one-offs, misfits, never-weres, and no-hit wonders that make up the rest of the set. It's a deep, deep dive into the underground that comes back with a very high gem-to-junk ratio. In fact, it's hard to single out anything for the latter column since the bands chosen are all very familiar with how to put together at least one song with a vibrant hook, unstoppable energy, and loads of enthusiasm. Some of the songs lean more toward punk (the Nips' \"Happy Song,\" Chelsea's \"Look at the Outside\"), some are twitchy and strange like the best oddball new wave (the Dodgems' \"Science Fiction [Baby You're So],\" Those Naughty Lumps' \"Down at the Zoo), and some give their U.S. counterparts a run in the chirpy pop department (the Monos!' \"UFO,\" the Letters' \"Don't Want You Back\"). Mostly though, the collection charts that fleeting moment when punk, power pop, and new wave came together magically to create something new, great, and timeless. Songs like Fast Cars' \"You're So Funny,\" Rich Kids' \"Rich Kids,\" and the Users' \"Now That It's Over\" sound as fresh and vital as when they were first released. Generally speaking, Bradlee is quite successful in his endeavors, and more often than not his versions are as catchy and appealing as the originals. Instead, this is a story riddled with tales of record-label politics, high expectations, poorly pressed bootlegs, and careers put on hold. In 1993 Large Professor made an appearance as a guest MC on A Tribe Called Quest's \"Keep It Rollin',\" a track he produced for their Midnight Marauders album. The last line of his verse, \"buy the album when I drop it,\" has since become a classic of golden-era New York rap. Unfortunately, it was for the wrong reasons. As it turns out, the world would have to wait another nine years for a proper full-length solo debut, 2002's 1st Class. It wasn't for a lack of effort, though. In 1996 Geffen released two Large Professor 12\" singles (\"IJUSWANNACHILL\" and \"The Mad Scientist\") in anticipation of his then-forthcoming album. After a number of delays and disagreements about the album's \"outdated\" vibe, Geffen dropped the project, leaving it to collect dust in the label's vaults for seven years. Fortunately, Large Professor reacquired the rights to the recordings in 2002, resulting in a limited promo-only CD pressing. Fans familiar with the singles should already know what to expect here, especially since five of the album's 12 tracks were spread among the two 12\"s. From a production standpoint, the sound is similar to that heard on Pro's previous full-length, Main Source's Breaking Atoms, though in a more stripped-down and mid-'90s manner. Among the highlights are the two singles, the hazy organ loop of \"Hungry,\" and the flat-out stunning Nas collabo, \"One on One.\" Remember, Nas was fresh from his classic debut, Illmatic, when he recorded this track, so fans that felt a little disillusioned by his later, ghetto-fabulous leanings owe it to themselves to check this track out. All said, Large Professor was never flooded with consistently interesting lyrics -- and there are some flat moments here -- but they never get in the way of the consistently high-quality production.
