Freddie Mercury kicks things off with \"Mustapha,\" a nod to his Middle Eastern origins. Sometimes time and opportunity allow someone to have a new perspective on an older work. Sometimes the thing that didn't work the first time works better the second time. In a very real sense, all of these things do and don't apply to the revised 2018 edition of Car Seat Headrest's album Twin Fantasy. CSH top kick Will Toledo initially wrote the songs for Twin Fantasy in his late teens, and he created a home-recorded version on his laptop that he released digitally in 2011. However, Toledo later declared that he never felt it was a completed work, and in 2016, with access to a professional recording studio and the help of a full band, he re-recorded the song cycle in a manner better suiting the ambitions of the project. In both versions, Twin Fantasy is a concept album about a teenage love affair between two boys that, not unlike CSH's 2016 breakthrough, Teens of Denial, offers a painfully accurate portrait of young-adult attraction that feels powerfully heartfelt without ignoring the terribly awkward perspective of his protagonists. Toledo has said that the songs drew from personal experience, and in both versions, Twin Fantasy hits an emotional bull's-eye, making sense of the intensity of young love as well as the mingled joy and confusion of making your way through a complex web of feelings without a convenient guidebook. In Matador's 2018 reissue of Twin Fantasy, both the 2011 original and the 2016 remake are included, and they're more similar than one might expect despite the differences in production, arrangements, and intensity. The 2011 recording is, as one would expect, relatively lo-fi, with the layers of guitars often pushed into the red and muddying the sound, but despite the relatively sloppy technique, the performances' passion and force are truly compelling. The 2016 remake is certainly more polished, though it's not truly slick, and it feels like a more mature work, which manifests itself in different ways. The arrangements are tighter and better executed, the audio is strong enough to suit the music and its dynamics, and Toledo's performances are more measured but also more nuanced, as if he has a better understanding of this story from a distance of a few years. Elton John spent much of the '80s in a whirlwind of personal upheaval and his musical unevenness included working with lyricists besides Bernie Taupin (an unthinkable notion during their run at the top of the charts during the '70s). EJ went for a fresh start by auctioning off all the costumes and props that he'd become renowned for during his over-the-top live shows. Right before doing this, the flamboyant entertainer revisited the past one more time by recreating his greatest hits live using orchestral accompaniment. The resulting LIVE IN AUSTRALIA found the John donning a powdered wig and 17th century garb to lead this ensemble, along with members of his regular touring band. Older material such as \"Burn Down The Mission,\" \"Madman Across The Water\" and \"Take Me To The Pilot\" is particularly breathtaking as presented in all its symphonic splendor while more obscure numbers such as \"Have Mercy On The Criminal\" and \"The Greatest Discovery\" remain odd yet interesting choices. The oddest result of this album's release was that \"Candle In The Wind\" unexpectedly became a hit 14 years after its original release. More than anything, Spencer Sings the Hits suggests the Blues Explosion without the same degree of fire and gravity, and with a little bit of noisy clatter and keyboard blurt added for seasoning. The high-attitude strut of Spencer's vocals is as loud and proud as ever, and the minimalist snarl of his guitar work is similarly confident. But where Judah Bauer and Russell Simins pushed Spencer forward, giving as good as he gave out, percussionist M. Sord and keyboardist Sam Coomes follow the star rather than walking in formation with him, and it makes a difference. This never rocks as hard as Spencer's best music, and while the songs still cut a solid groove and boast some suitably greasy melodic hooks, the finished product sounds like he's moved from heavyweight status down to welterweight. And perhaps that's just what Spencer had in mind; Spencer Sings the Hits is still full of style and high spirits, and the songs \"Fake\" and \"Beetle Boots\" show he has no time for various backbiters and syndicators. But it's hard not to feel that if he really didn't want to encourage comparisons to his previous work, he might have made an album that doesn't follow the Blues Explosion's template so clearly. If you dig Jon Spencer, you'll have a good time with Spencer Sings the Hits. Since Bradley had an unexpected success with his cover of Black Sabbath's \"Changes,\" it should surprise no one that there are some offbeat takes on rock tunes included on this set, and he transforms Nirvana's \"Stay Away\" so totally that you might not recognize it at first, and while his take on Neil Young's \"Heart of Gold\" follows the original a bit more closely, the weary grit of his interpretation captures the sorrow and introspection of Young's lyrics brilliantly.
