Though some might argue that the Beatles' unprecedented evolution from British Invasion pin-ups to pop music visionaries began with BEATLES FOR SALE, RUBBER SOUL is without a doubt the first album to definitively put the Fab Four in the running for Greatest Band Ever. Virtually every aspect of the Liverpool quartet's incredibly diverse sound is in evidence here: the dark, irony-filled Dylanism ("Norwegian Wood," "Nowhere Man"), pop perfection ("In My Life"), the passion for classic tin pan alley balladry ("Girl," "Michelle"), and the love of good 'ol rock & roll music ("Drive My Car"). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, Olympic Sound Studios, De Lane Lea and Chappell Recording Studios, London, England between November 24, 1966 and November 7, 1967. The U.S. version of the soundtrack for the Beatles' ill-fated British television special embellished the six songs that were found on the British Magical Mystery Tour double EP with five other cuts from their 1967 singles. (The CD version of the record has now been standardized worldwide as the 11 tracks found on the American version.) The psychedelic sound is very much in the vein of Sgt. Pepper's, and even spacier in parts (especially the sound collages of "I Am the Walrus"). Unlike Sgt. Pepper's, there's no vague overall conceptual/thematic unity to the material, which has made Magical Mystery Tour suffer slightly in comparison. Still, the music is mostly great, and "Penny Lane," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "All You Need Is Love," and "Hello Goodbye" were all huge, glorious, and innovative singles. Arguably the first psychedelic rock album, REVOLVER was praised for its musical experimentation--the Indian sounds of "Love You To," the Motown-inspired "Got To Get You Into My Life," the backwards guitar in "I'm Only Sleeping." "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the most radical departure from previous Beatles' recordings for its skeletal bass/drums propulsion enhanced only with tape loops (contributed by all four Beatles and added in the mix-down process), more backwards guitar, and an eerie John Lennon vocal. But the CD set is a slightly different animal since it grabs what Frampton thinks are the best performances of the material played from various gigs on his year-long tour from 2011-2012. In comparison, the video is two complete shows from a few cities. The musical differences are subtle, yet there is a case to be made that the audio is a better document of this material and that hardcore fans may indeed want to spring for both. Regardless, even if the concept of classic rockers and new wavers playing their classic albums from start to finish is already clich? in 2012, Frampton and his band, of which only bassist Stanley Sheldon remains from the 1977 Frampton Comes Alive! outfit, deliver a robust and thoroughly convincing show. Considering that the guitarist has likely played much of this material at every concert for the previous three decades, his commitment and sheer enjoyment seem to be fresh, and if not always inspired, certainly inspirational. Frampton's voice isn't quite as fluid as it was 35 years prior, but the slight, grainy edge that age brings injects a somewhat more sober note to these energetic performances. Almost every song is longer, too, with "I'll Give You Money" jumping from just under six minutes in 1975 to over nine minutes here. The show-stopping, talk box-driven "Do You Feel Like We Do" expands, for better or worse, from 12 to nearly 18 minutes with a newly added, jazzy interlude from electric pianist Rob Arthur. If that were all, it would be a pretty successful revival of an album that surprisingly hasn't lost its luster since its mid-'70s release. But Frampton returns with a stunning second set, arguably better than the first, that features live versions of more obscure, newer selections. He also digs into oldies from his tenure in Humble Pie, including a raucous "I Don't Need No Doctor" and an appearance from son Julian who sings lead on that track and a few others. Frampton's guitar chops are finely tuned throughout but he gets a chance to really exhibit them on the beautiful ten-minute classical/blues/jazz-based instrumental "Suite: Liberte" from 2010's unjustly ignored Thank You Mr. Churchill. A roaring 12-minute take on George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" begins with an almost avant-garde intro before Frampton hits the noted riff almost three minutes later and builds the intensity until it explodes in a goosebump-raising crescendo. With over three hours of music, nearly all of this is pretty terrific -- what could have been a shoddy, cash-generating knockoff is powerful proof that Frampton might indeed be getting better as he ages. The result is an artistic triumph and a musical treat, especially for fans and even for those who may not have been born when Frampton Comes Alive! was a staple in dorm rooms and ruled the charts in 1976. ~ Hal Horowitz

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 11/13/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Peter-Frampton-THE-BEST-OF-FCA-35_MNH5V.jpg?v=1759150498
the-beatles-beatles-for-sale09
BEATLES FOR SALE(09)
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, guitar, harmonica); George Harrison (vocals, 6- & 12-string guitars); Paul McCartney (vocals, bass); Ringo Starr (drums).
Additional personnel: George Martin (piano).
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England and EMI Pathe Studios, Paris, France.
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, guitar, piano); George Harrison (vocals, guitar, African drum); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, Hammond organ, bass); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, timpani, percussion).
Additional personnel: George Martin (piano).
Includes liner notes by Derek Taylor.
It was inevitable that the constant grind of touring, writing, promoting, and recording would grate on the Beatles, but the weariness of Beatles for Sale comes as something of a shock. Only five months before, the group released the joyous A Hard Day's Night. Now, they sound beaten, worn, and, in Lennon's case, bitter and self-loathing. His opening trilogy ("No Reply," "I'm a Loser," "Baby's in Black") is the darkest sequence on any Beatles record, setting the tone for the album. Moments of joy pop up now and again, mainly in the forms of covers and the dynamic "Eight Days a Week," but the very presence of six covers after the triumphant all-original A Hard Day's Night feels like an admission of defeat or at least a regression. (It doesn't help that Lennon's cover of his beloved obscurity "Mr. Moonlight" winds up as arguably the worst thing the group ever recorded.) Beneath those surface suspicions, however, there are some important changes on Beatles for Sale, most notably Lennon's discovery of Bob Dylan and folk-rock. The opening three songs, along with "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party," are implicitly confessional and all quite bleak, which is a new development. This spirit winds up overshadowing McCartney's cheery "I'll Follow the Sun" or the thundering covers of "Rock & Roll Music," "Honey Don't," and "Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey!," and the weariness creeps up in unexpected places -- "Every Little Thing," "What You're Doing," even George's cover of Carl Perkins' "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" -- leaving the impression that Beatlemania may have been fun but now the group is exhausted. That exhaustion results in the group's most uneven album, but its best moments find them moving from Merseybeat to the sophisticated pop/rock they developed in mid-career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 11/13/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Beatles-BEATLES-FOR-SALE09_BzTsR.jpg?v=1741915583
the-beatles-with-the-beatles-180-gram-vinyl-remastered-reissue
With the Beatles (180 Gram Vinyl, Remastered, Reissue)
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, Hammond organ, tambourine); George Harrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, electric bass, claves); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, bongos, maracas).
Additional personnel: George Martin (piano).
Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England from July to October 1963.
Includes liner notes by Tony Barrow.
This is the one that turned the world upside-down. Not only was the record the de facto soundtrack for their movie, not only was it filled with nothing but Lennon-McCartney originals, but it found the Beatles truly coming into their own as a band by performing a uniformly excellent set of songs. All of the disparate influences on their first two albums had coalesced into a bright, joyous, original sound filled with ringing guitars and irresistible melodies. They had certainly found their musical voice before, but A Hard Day's Night is where it became mythical. In just a few years, they made more adventurous and accomplished albums, but this is the sound of Beatlemania in all of its giddy glory -- for better and for worse, this is the definitive Beatles album, the one every group throughout the ages has used as a blueprint. Listening to the album, it's easy to see why. Decades after its original release, A Hard Day's Night's punchy blend of propulsive rhythms, jangly guitars, and infectious, singalong melodies is remarkably fresh. There's something intrinsically exciting in the sound of the album itself, something to keep the record vital years after it was recorded. Even more impressive are the songs themselves. Not only are the melodies forceful and memorable, but Lennon and McCartney have found a number of variations to their basic Merseybeat style, from the brash "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Any Time at All," through the gentle "If I Fell," to the tough folk-rock of "I'll Cry Instead." It's possible to hear both songwriters develop their own distinctive voices on the album, but overall, A Hard Day's Night stands as a testament to their collaborative powers -- never again did they write together so well or so easily, choosing to pursue their own routes. John and Paul must have known how strong the material is -- they threw the pleasant trifle "I'm Happy Just to Dance with You" to George and didn't give anything to Ringo to sing. That may have been a little selfish, but it hardly hurts the album, since everything on the record is performed with genuine glee and excitement. It's the pinnacle of their early years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 11/13/2012

Best Sellers: Top Seller

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Beatles-A-Hard-Days-Night-180-Gram-Vinyl-Remastered-Reissue_uPMT4.jpg?v=1740489092
soundgarden-king-animal-2-lp
King Animal [2 LP]
Soundgarden return after a long hiatus with King Animal, their first album of new material since 1996's Down on the Upside 16 years previously. See individual albums for further details.
When Capitol decided to release the original British editions of the Beatles' albums instead of the bastardized American versions, they were left with a bit of a quandary. Since the Beatles had an enormous number of non-LP singles, some of their greatest hits -- from "I Want to Hold Your Hand" through "Hey Jude" -- would not be included on disc if Capitol simply served up straight reissues. They had two options: they could add the singles as bonus tracks to the appropriate CDs, or they could release a compilation of all the non-LP tracks. It should come as no surprise that they chose the latter. Over its first half, Past Masters captures the exuberance of Beatlemania while confirming the band's talents as popcraftsmen ("This Boy," "Yes It Is") and proving that they could rock really, really hard ("I Feel Fine," "She's a Woman," the peerless "I'm Down"). From 1965 on, the 15 non-LP tracks released in the last five years of the band's career (not counting the singles that were released on Magical Mystery Tour) may not be as thematically consistent, but they hit greater highs with a greater frequency. Indeed, some of the greatest singles in pop history are here: "Day Tripper," "We Can Work It Out," "Paperback Writer," "Rain," "Lady Madonna," "Hey Jude," "Revolution," "Don't Let Me Down," and "The Ballad of John and Yoko." In the middle of all this, single versions of "Get Back" and "Let It Be" appear (the former is stiffer than the LP version, the latter is better than its counterpart), along with the alternate (and superior) "Across the Universe" and the silly yet strangely irresistible "You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)." Apart from a few cuts that are merely rarities, this is a near-perfect compilation that captures the energy and spirit of the Beatles' entire career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 11/13/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Beatles-Past-Masters-180-Gram-Vinyl-Remastered-Reissue-2-Lps_N5XiP.jpg?v=1741887210
neu-neu-white-gatefold-lp-jacket
Neu! This package includes two CDs and DVDs each of Rub?n Blades y Seis del Solar's Todos Vuelven: Live concert. The music here, which was recorded as part of the 25th anniversary tour for Blades and his fine Seis de Solar, is without match for the era. Showcasing a wide-ranging retrospective of Blades' early, pre-, and Fania eras (with and apart from Willie Col?n), through his Warner period and beyond. The band smokes; they're tight, fiery, and passionate. Blades is in absolutely spectacular voice throughout. The energy is infectious. The problem lies with the video. While the DVDs present the exact same material and the sound is fine, the visual production quality is somewhat lacking. It's grainy with some rough patches, as if the cameras were substandard. For those who already purchased the music, stick with what you have; for those who bought the videos, there isn't anything here you don't already own. The middling marks denote points off for the video. The 20-song disc XX: Two Decades of Love Metal does a reasonable job of expanding on what was their most likely starting point, And Love Said No. However, choosing between the two is a matter of taste. With this one, a Neil Diamond cover is replaced with a previously unreleased cover of "Strange World" by Kevin Grivois (aka K?). In return for losing "Close to the Flame," "And Love Said No," and "It's All Tears (Drown in This Love)," we gain two songs apiece from Dark Light, Venus Doom, and Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice. These later-era songs are up to snuff with the earlier material, so it really comes down to whether you can live with the fact that eight of these songs are radio edits. If so, this is an excellent way to start experiencing the fuzzed-out gloom and doom. First off, several facts need to be explained: although released in May 1970, this was not their final album, but largely recorded in early 1969, way before Abbey Road. Phil Spector was enlisted in early 1970 to do some post-production work, but did not work with the band as a unit, as George Martin and Glyn Johns had on the sessions themselves; Spector's work was limited to mixing and some overdubs. And, although his use of strings has generated much criticism, by and large he left the original performances to stand as is: only "The Long and Winding Road" and (to a lesser degree) "Across the Universe" and "I Me Mine" get the wall-of-sound layers of strings and female choruses. Although most of the album, then, has a live-in-the-studio feel, the main problem was that the material wasn't uniformly strong, and that the Beatles themselves were in fairly lousy moods due to inter-group tension. All that said, the album is on the whole underrated, even discounting the fact that a sub-standard Beatles record is better than almost any other group's best work. McCartney in particular offers several gems: the gospelish "Let It Be," which has some of his best lyrics; "Get Back," one of his hardest rockers; and the melodic "The Long and Winding Road," ruined by Spector's heavy-handed overdubs (the superior string-less, choir-less version was finally released on Anthology Vol. 3). The folky "Two of Us," with John and Paul harmonizing together, was also a highlight. Most of the rest of the material, by contrast, was going through the motions to some degree, although there are some good moments of straight hard rock in "I've Got a Feeling" and "Dig a Pony." As flawed and bumpy as it is, it's an album well worth having, as when the Beatles were in top form here, they were as good as ever. ~ Richie Unterberger

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 11/13/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/the-beatles-let-it-be-180-gram-vinyl-remastered-reissue_dvYCG.jpg?v=1759162907
aaron-lewis-road
ROAD
Personnel: Aaron Lewis (acoustic guitar); Ben Kitterman (acoustic guitar, dobro); B. His shows at Madison Square Garden were, in fact, his first full concerts in New York: during previous visits to the Big Apple, Presley had only performed a few numbers in television studios. Accordingly, Presley's four shows at Madison Square Garden were huge media events. As part of the pre-concert hype, RCA announced that it would release a live album of the concerts one week after the final show. That album, ELVIS AS RECORDED AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, was recorded during the evening show on Saturday, June 10.
The show is typical of Presley's touring show during the Seventies, a mix of early Elvis hits and more contemporary songs popularized by others. Presley tosses off many of his hits, but he throws himself fully into numbers like "The Impossible Dream" (from "Man of La Mancha"), Tony Joe White's hit "Polk Salad Annie" and "American Trilogy," the last of which would become a signature song of his late career. The duo produced the entirety of Thursday, released that August. It offered minor variations on the debut's themes of getting laid and high through scenes of bleak malevolence. Anyone not magnetized to extended periods of intense wallowing and/or chemically-induced lethargy -- or the idea of experiencing either one of the two states -- could discern that Tesfaye could have used an editor. And then, in December, just after Drake released Take Care, an album featuring a handful of Tesfaye collaborations, Echoes of Silence completed the Weeknd trilogy in an equally excessive fashion. Emboldened by critical acclaim and an enthusiastic fan base, Tesfaye continued to find slightly different, occasionally peculiar ways of expressing unapologetically sordid feelings about drugs, partying, drugs, bad girls, drugs, strippers, drugs, good girls gone bad, and drugs -- all of which serve an identical purpose and get the same level of consideration. There are points throughout these works where Tesfaye is distinctively gripping, supplying deadly hooks and somehow singing for his life despite the cold blood flowing through his veins. When this package was released, he was gaining mainstream momentum with appearances on Drake's "Crew Love" and Wiz Khalifa's "Remember You." His potential is as obvious as his lyrics are toxic. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 11/13/2012

Amazingly, Bo Diddley's third album -- containing classics such as "Cops and Robbers," "Run Diddley Daddy," and "Mona (I Need You Baby)" -- has only been reissued on vinyl, and even that's out of print. More than one British Invasion band learned what they needed to know about American rock & roll from the songs on this record (the Stones cut "Cops and Robbers" at their earliest recording session, and later released a killer version of "Mona," though the most interesting British version of the latter was done by an all-girl band with an attitude called the Liverbirds). This record is every bit as raunchy as Diddley's first two albums (the guitars may even be crunchier, and the singing shows more range), and has more than enough to recommend it to collectors and fans. This is the album that began the funny cover photos on Diddley's records. ~ Bruce Eder

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 11/13/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/bo-diddley-have-guitar-will-travel-2-bonus-tracks_aWQww.jpg?v=1759133775
sonic-youth-smart-bar-chicago-1985
SMART BAR CHICAGO 1985
In 1985, indie rock was still very much a wild, somewhat dangerous underground subculture that lived in the shadows of corporate radio rock and the multi-platinum hair metal acts that dominated mainstream American airwaves and Billboard charts. Along with gruff experimentalists like the Swans, guitar noodling slackers Dinosaur Jr., acid casualties the Butthole Surfers, and many many others, Sonic Youth were one of the more important creative forces in the early days of indie obscurity, making their way across the college campuses and small-capacity rock clubs of both the U.S. and Europe, bending traditional guitar-based rock through a prism of film school dropout sensibilities and New York's savage no wave aesthetic. Smart Bar: Chicago 1985 captures the band at a particularly explosive date on a tour supporting its second proper album, Bad Moon Rising. Drummer Bob Bert had left the band after the recording of the album, off to contribute trash-can percussion to Pussy Galore and replaced by an incredibly boyish Steve Shelley, formerly of goofy speed punkers the Crucifucks and playing on his first tour with the band here. The set list sticks pretty closely to the eerie songs of Bad Moon Rising, but the performance trades in some of the album's plodding horror-movie dread for a more visceral, explosive energy. Sprawling stretches of guitar feedback, walkman tape blurts of Madonna songs, and group percussion jams bridge the songs, with Shelley's interpretations of the drum parts going from simply propulsive to an interplanetary urgency. The band sounds locked into a collective meditation for much of the set, stringing together the long and discordant segments of songs into a mostly uninterrupted hour and change of sound. Along with the Bad Moon Rising material and a few selections of the Glenn Branca-influenced songs from the EPs that came before, previously unreleased instrumental track "Kat 'n' Hat" makes an appearance here, as do then-new songs "Secret Girl" and "Expressway to Yr Skull," which wouldn't appear in recorded form until 1986's troubled dream EVOL. The recording here comes from a mix of multi-tracked cassette and fan-taped sources, resulting in some occasional clumsy panning or distortion, but high fidelity couldn't quite capture the blistering energy of this phase of the band. Without besting the album versions, almost every song here offers a more vivid, more extreme counterpoint to its better-known studio side. Before the kingdom of Nirvana that SY helped pave the way for came and went, it was still the Wild West for indie bands with no budgets and minimal exposure. Smart Bar is a sepia-toned snapshot of the excitement and unhinged freedom Sonic Youth operated in during those times. Unpolished, tormented, hungry, and constantly threatening to crumble into godless noise, this is the band at its white-hot peak -- a raw, dangerous, and unknown brilliance that the group would never fully return to. ~ Fred Thomas

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 11/13/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/sonic-youth-smart-bar-chicago-1985_cIyQm.jpg?v=1759186836
b-52s-cosmic-thing
COSMIC THING
The B-52s: Keith Strickland, Kate Pierson (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Fred Schneider (vocals, percussion); Cindy Wilson (vocals).
Additional personnel: Nile Rodgers (guitar); Tommy Mandell, Philippe Saisse, Richard Hilton (keyboards); Sara Lee (bass, background vocals); Steve Ferrone, Sonny Emory, Charlie Drayton, Leroy Clouden (drums).
The Uptown Horns: Chris Cioe, Paul Literal, Arno Hecht, Bob Funk, Carl Beatty.
1986's BOUNCING OFF THE SATELLITES found the B-52s in the throes of mourning (they'd lost guitarist Ricky Wilson).
