Forde.
In 2012, right on schedule, Rihanna delivered her fourth annual November album. The singer took a different route with the lead single. She didn't go with a dramatic ballad like "Russian Roulette" or a big dance number like "Only Girl (In the World)" and "We Found Love." Instead, the nod went to a midtempo pop ballad, "Diamonds" -- as in "We're like diamonds in the sky" (rather than stars in a mine), a simple and effective, light in meaning yet massive in sonics, quasi-processional. Even with that change of pace, the possibility of it signaling an overall change in direction was slight. Not only is Unapologetic just as varied as Rihanna's past albums -- it's another timely refresh of contemporary pop music -- but it's a little more exploratory and a whole lot deeper, too. Continuing the trend that began on Rated R, Rihanna's at her best when she's flaunting. This goes for "Pour It Up," a characteristically chilly and booming Mike Will collaboration that might as well be a sequel to "Bandz a Make Her Dance," the producer's hit with Juicy J. Wrapped in a serene sneer, Rihanna's trash talk is something else. Moments such as that one are so convincing that the few everywoman heart-on-sleeve songs -- with the exception of the massive, slamming, wailing power ballad that is "What Now" -- don't sound all that natural. Two of the album's most intriguing, contrasting, and not-so-everywoman tracks appear consecutively during the latter half. Both of them were written and produced by Terius "The-Dream" Nash and Carlos "Los" McKinney. "Nobody's Business," flecked with elements from Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel," is a beaming if somewhat belligerent disco-house duet with Chris Brown. Rihanna's partner proposes to make out in a Lexus prior to proclaiming that the relationship "ain't nobody's business." The celebration is followed by "Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary," conjoined songs with a wide theatrical scope akin to that of the-Dream's own "Nikki, Pt. 2/Abyss." Over a swelling and receding production with echoes of Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis' Eyes," Rihanna mourns ("Felt like love struck me in the night/I pray that love don't strike twice"), then confesses ("Mother Mary, I swear I wanna change"), then surrenders ("I'm prepared to die in the moment"). Perhaps no one should read anything into it. The same could be said of "No Love Allowed," which comes along a little later. Even with a captivating, drum-less reggae groove, it's hard to hear lines like "Your love hit me to the core" and "It's so foolish how you keep me wanting more" and think that she's fine and could be singing about anyone. While this is a fine, if uneven album, the only way to enjoy a significant portion of it is by taking it as pure entertainment. Good luck. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 11/19/2012

Midnight Special is a Music CDs from Uncle Kracker

Genre: Rock

Format: CD

Released: 11/19/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Uncle-Kracker-Midnight-Special_Vd9CP.jpg?v=1742364383
eva-cassidy-best-of-eva-cassidy
BEST OF EVA CASSIDY
Recording information: Black Pond Studio, Rockville, MD (09/10/1994-09/24/1994); Blues Alley (09/10/1994-09/24/1994); Chris Biondo's Studio, Glendale, MD (09/10/1994-09/24/1994); Glendale, Maryland (09/10/1994-09/24/1994); Pearl's (09/10/1994-09/24/1994); The Maryland Inn (09/10/1994-09/24/1994); Black Pond Studio, Rockville, MD (1990); Blues Alley (1990); Chris Biondo's Studio, Glendale, MD (1990); Glendale, Maryland (1990); Pearl's (1990); The Maryland Inn (1990); Black Pond Studio, Rockville, MD (1991); Blues Alley (1991); Chris Biondo's Studio, Glendale, MD (1991); Glendale, Maryland (1991); Pearl's (1991); The Maryland Inn (1991); Black Pond Studio, Rockville, MD (1996); Blues Alley (1996); Chris Biondo's Studio, Glendale, MD (1996); Glendale, Maryland (1996); Pearl's (1996); The Maryland Inn (1996).
Eva Cassidy's story is a sad one, certainly, but the bittersweet happy ending to it all is that her singing, music, and recordings continue to live on and gather fans and admirers even after her early death from melanoma cancer in 1996 at the age of 33. Cassidy was never really known outside of the Washington, D.C. area during her lifetime, and her recorded legacy consists of a live album, assorted other live tracks, an album of duets, and a handful of demos. She was a masterful song interpreter, able to take on almost any song in any style or genre and spin her voice around it, giving it a kind of haunting and sincere freshness. Some credited Death with inventing death metal, but whether or not Death single-handedly created the style, there was no question that countless death metal, thrash, and grindcore bands had been influenced by their blistering sound. The adjective "blistering" certainly describes "Genetic Reconstruction," "Living Monstrosity," and other songs on this high-volume CD, which illustrates Death's ferocious nature. True to form, Death's lyrics are dark, morbid, and pessimistic. But as brutal as this album is (both musically and lyrically), it's important to stress that it isn't as extreme as many of the unmelodic, one-dimensional grindcore releases that were coming out in 1990. Tempos vary, and the songs aren't without harmonic appeal. Spiritual Healing may not have been multi-platinum, but for knowledgeable headbangers in the death metal underground, there was no denying this band's importance. ~ Alex Henderson

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 11/19/2012

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/death-spiritual-healing-2-cds_Cdeea.jpg?v=1741077397
led-zeppelin-celebration-day
CELEBRATION DAY
Personnel: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (keyboards, bass guitar); Jason Bonham (drums, percussion, background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Alan Moulder.
Liner Note Authors: Jimmy Page; John Paul Jones ; Robert Plant; Jason Bonham.
Recording information: O2 Arena, London (12/10/2007).
Director: Dick Carruthers.
Editors: Henry Stein; Dick Carruthers.
Photographers: Scarlet Page; Ross Halfin; Kevin Westenberg; Chris McCourt.
Contrary to popular perception, Led Zeppelin isn't exactly averse to reunions. If anything, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant can't keep away from each other. Just four years after John Bonham's 1980 death, Page laid down guitar on Robert Plant's oldies act the Honeydrippers, and not long after that, John Paul Jones joined the pair for a performance at 1985's Live Aid. That set was trashed by the public and band alike, as was their subsequent 1988 appearance at Atlantic Records' 40th Anniversary celebration, but despite these lackluster gigs, rumors of a full-fledged reunion continued to circulate well into the new millennium, even after Page & Plant recorded a pair of albums in the mid-'90s -- a project that caused tension with Jones, who was unaware of the collaboration until its release. Eventually, all the bad blood cooled and the trio once again reunited, this time with Bonham's son Jason on drums, for a full-fledged set as the headliners for the 2007 Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert. Five years later, this reunion was finally released as Celebration Day, a live album available either as an audio or a CD/DVD set, letting the world at large experience what was roundly and rightly acclaimed as a near-perfect reunion. Why is Celebration Day such a resounding success? The snide answer is rehearsal: Zeppelin knew their previous two returns to the stage weren't up to snuff so they spent a great deal of time woodshedding, realizing their reputation was on the line. And since none of the participants were truly tempted by an ongoing reunion, one where they would have to hawk the same set list at every corner of the globe for over a year, they decided to pour all they had into this one-off concert, betting that one great gig would trump a globe-conquering tour. They were right. Celebration Day is an ideal coda for Led Zeppelin, proof that the group's skills only deepened with age. Never once does the group sound as if they're grasping at re-creating their youth; they've selected a set heavy on blues, atmosphere, and hits, songs that allow each member -- including Jason Bonham -- to stretch out and casually flaunt his skills. Plant may no longer be able to reach the soaring highs he did in the '70s, but his lowered range gives "Black Dog" and "The Song Remains the Same" gravity, and helps give "Trampled Under Foot" a gut-level punch. Page still can muff a note or two -- so can the band, actually, with Plant missing a line on the opening "Good Times Bad Times," a mistake that's thankfully left uncorrected -- but his imagination is unchained, and, when compared to the Page/Plant records of the '90s, it becomes clear how much Jones contributed to the band's chemistry, lending it grit and funk ("Misty Mountain Hop" grooves more than any song without bass should), deepening and coloring Page's riffs, letting the band bounce out and return to center. All of this unique chemistry is evident on Celebration Day -- underscored ever so slightly by the presence of Jason Bonham, the son of the king who now seems like the only possible heir to the throne, emphasizing that the band is a family affair -- and while this reunion is so unexpectedly, impossibly good that you'd want to experience this in the flesh, it also underscores the wisdom of leaving this as a one-time thing. This is so good that this is how you want to remember them: older, perhaps wiser, and still majestic. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 11/19/2012

Personnel: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (keyboards, bass guitar); Jason Bonham (drums, percussion, background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Alan Moulder.
Liner Note Authors: Jimmy Page; John Paul Jones ; Robert Plant; Jason Bonham.
Recording information: O2 Arena, London (12/10/2007).
Director: Dick Carruthers.
Editors: Henry Stein; Dick Carruthers.
Photographers: Scarlet Page; Ross Halfin; Kevin Westenberg; Chris McCourt.
Contrary to popular perception, Led Zeppelin isn't exactly averse to reunions.

Personnel: Seth Avett (vocals, guitar, kazoo, piano, percussion); Scott Avett (vocals, banjo, percussion); Bob Crawford (vocals).
Recording information: Concord, NC; Marshville, NC.
The Avett Brothers play a mixture of country, folk, and bluegrass with an infectious sense of enthusiasm. Their lyrics generally ain't bad, either, and the Avett Brothers are particularly adept at expressing good-natured skepticism, whether they're rejecting the need for a middleman between themselves and God without disrespecting preachers ("Me and God"), or noting the differences between movie romance and loving someone in real life ("Now in the movies they make it look so perfect/And in the background they're always playin' the right song/And in the ending there's always a resolution/But real life is more than just two hours long"). "Love Like the Movies" also includes the sound of a film projector (or something that resembles it), which serves as another reminder that just because the Avett Brothers love old-time music doesn't mean they do everything by the book. Turner helped define the mainstream sound of late-'60s/early-'70s pop/rock and hard rock. Bachman led the Guess Who to huge success before splitting to ultimately form Bachman-Turner Overdrive with Turner. BTO's catchy, basic, arena-ready hard rock yielded record sales in the millions and helped pave the way for heavy metal's commercial popularity. After more than 20 years apart, the Canadians joined forces for a new album, 2010's Bachman & Turner, and then hit the road again, which is where their style of music lives and breathes. In 2012 these classic rock icons released the two-CD concert chronicle Live at the Roseland Ballroom, NYC. It was recorded on November 16, 2010, at the famed New York City venue. Bachman and Turner are backed by a sturdy band including guitarist Brent Howard Knudsen, guitarist Mick Dalla-Vee, and drummer Marc LaFrance. Bachman is an underrated songwriter and highly effective no-frills/no-nonsense guitarist -- with some showing-off exceptions here and there. Turner's songwriting and nimble bass guitar work provide a groovy foundation, but his greatest strength is his voice. His ragged rumble is truly a voice built for rock & roll, and it hasn't lost any power over the decades. Given Bachman and Turner's collective inspirational muscle, can you imagine how many garage bands and bar bands made their bones on BTO tunes? And BTO tunes make up the majority of the set list on Live at the Roseland Ballroom, NYC. Faithful renditions of all the hits are here: "Let It Ride," "Hey You," the chart-topping "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet," "Roll On Down the Highway," and the hard rock cornerstone "Takin' Care of Business." Lesser hits and deep cuts from the albums Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Bachman-Turner Overdrive II, the number one Not Fragile, Four Wheel Drive, and Head On provide a clearer picture; these songs include "Rock is My Life," "Not Fragile," "Hold Back the Water," "Lookin' Out for #1," "Stayed Awake All Night," "Four Wheel Drive," "Blue Collar," and "Sledgehammer." Five tracks from Bachman & Turner are featured, the best of which are "Waiting Game," "Moonlight Rider," and "Slave to the Rhythm." The Guess Who's number one single "American Woman" gets aired out, as does "Shakin' All Over" (their Johnny Kidd & the Pirates cover recorded when the band was called Chad Allan & the Expressions). Pianist Paul Shaffer -- the bandleader for David Letterman's NBC and CBS television shows -- is a bundle of gleeful energy when he sits in on "Shakin' All Over," "Roll On Down the Highway," and "Takin' Care of Business" to end the show.
