Whether they were inspired by the garage-rock revival that took place in between the two records, or just felt like making some visceral rock & roll, this 2004 release has as much unbridled energy as such early U2 benchmarks as BOY or WAR. The album starts with a bang, courtesy of the charging, angular "Vertigo," whose driving bass line and shouted vocals announce the band's intentions in no uncertain terms.
The bluesy "Love and Peace or Else," and the fuzz-guitar-fueled "All Because of You" follow suit in a similarly high-energy manner. That's not to say that this is a mere rockfest from start to finish, though. There are an equal number of reflective, mid-tempo tunes whose direct emotional impact recalls the more elegiac tracks on OCTOBER, giving the whole album a dynamic depth of field. Whether rocking like madmen or getting in touch with their inner selves, though, the band sounds totally committed throughout ATOMIC BOMB, which has always been the first requirement for a great U2 album.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 11/23/2004

Composer: John Debney.
Director: Lia Vollack.
Executive producer Little Steven gives the latest Tim Allen holiday caper, Christmas With the Kranks, a garage rock revival makeover. The esteemed DJ/New Jersey gangster/musician arranged and produced six of the 12 cuts, which range from girl group splendor (the Charms' charming rendition of "Frosty the Snowman") to the Ravi Shankar-meets-Phil Spector wall of sitars and strings that permeates Tina Sugandh's lush "White Christmas." Also included are originals by the Raveonettes (the punch-drunk, vibrato-filled "Christmas Song") and the Ramones ("Merry Christmas [I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight]"), which along with the Brian Setzer Orchestra's rousing "Nutcracker Suite" are among the record's best bets for a long night chasing mistletoe. It also helps that she isn't afraid of a good pop melody, as her taste in covers suggests, and that she can write one herself when she's so inclined, indicated by the fact she had actual hit singles with "Sunny Came Home" and "I Don't Know Why." Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection is a Shawn Colvin compilation whose focus is summed up quite clearly by its subtitle -- her best-known songs are all here, for the most part, while lesser-known and fan-focused material doesn't make the cut, most notably anything from her bare-bones Live '88 album, which still ranks with her best and most passionate work. (And shame on Sony for not including what would have the ideal hidden track -- Colvin's witty musical performance as Christian songbird Rachel Jordan on The Simpsons.) But as a sampler of Colvin's work or an introduction for beginners, Polaroids: A Greatest Hits Collection serves its purpose well -- there's plenty of fine music (including a newly recorded cover of the Beatles' "I'll Be Back" that's exclusive to this collection) that offers a clear and concise picture of Colvin's creative arc to date, and this is a consistently pleasurable listen from start to finish. With any luck, in another 15 years she'll have another set of songs this strong for Polaroids, Pt. 2. ~ Mark Deming

Genre: Rock

Format: CD

Released: 11/23/2004

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/shawn-colvin-polaroids-a-greatest-hits-collection_2CQDx.jpg?v=1759358338
gwen-stefani-love-angel-music
LOVE,ANGEL,MUSIC...
Historically, it's a tricky endeavor for the singer from an enormously successful band to embark on a solo career. Gwen Stefani, the glamorous vocalist for No Doubt, sidesteps the issue on her first solo album, LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, by largely eschewing the No Doubt sound. In its place, there's a strong emphasis on the R&B and hip-hop flavors that were hinted at in preceding No Doubt records. Towards that end, Stefani gamely enlists the assistance of Dr. Dre, the Neptunes, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and others, on an album that references everything from Japanese pop culture ("Harajuku Girls") to FIDDLER ON THE ROOF ("Rich Girl," featuring rapper Eve). Sensual R&B rhythms, frenetic hip-hop beats, and yes, the occasional pop/rock echo of No Doubt, all share space on LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, filtered through a fun-loving, party-starting sensibility.

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 11/23/2004

!!!
