Nothing here is exactly unexpected -- even the presence of Santogold on \"Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win\" isn't new, it's new wave -- yet The Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2 feels fresh because there is such kinetic joy propelling this music. Last time around, the Beasties weighed themselves down by creating retro-tribute to N.Y.C., taking everything just a little bit too seriously, but here they're free of any expectations and are back to doing what they do best: cracking wise and acting so stupid they camouflage how kinetic, inventive, and rich their music is. And, make no mistake, The Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2 does find the Beastie Boys at their best. In a way, however, DAMN. is just as lavish and singular as the preceding albums, its quantity and weight of thoughts and connected concepts condensed into a considerably tighter space. It contains some of Lamar's best writing and performances, revealing his evolving complexity and versatility as a soul-baring lyricist and dynamic rapper. Although it's occasionally distorted, stretched, smeared, and reversed to compelling and imagination-fueling effect, his voice is at its most affecting in its many untreated forms. Take \"FEAR.,\" in which he switches between echoing hot-blooded parental threats to enumerating, with a 40-acre stare, various death scenarios. His storytelling hits an astonishing new high on \"Duckworth,\" the album's finale. King's daughter Louise Goffin joins the band for \"Where You Lead\" and \"Will You Love Me Tomorrow,\" which are given a new poignancy in this presentation. King even straps on a Stratocaster for \"Smackwater Jack.\" When she and the band finish the album, she takes the stage solo for a Goffin\/King medley to offer a wider view of her career; they are snippets, but she pulls them off with finesse. Even the more accessible numbers have bite and exceedingly sharp edges, from the frustration that fills the soul-styled \"Break Down\" to the derision that floods the lyrics of \"Bright Lights\" and on to the cutting theme of the dreamy, roots-flavored \"Girlfriend.\" Dammers' world view was growing ever darker, and his lyrics reflect this polarization. Where once there was thoughtful reasoning laced with sarcasm, here the coddling is gone, and even the irony is heavy-handed. Proof is found in the uncompromising \"Racist Friend,\" where Dammers insists one should sever such relationships rather than attempt to alter such opinions. The evocative, Arab-esque \"War Crimes\" is even more militant. Israel's invasion of Lebanon, in much of the world's opinion, certainly qualified as a war crime, but many felt that Dammers overstepped the mark by comparing it to Nazi death camps. Only the warm melody and gentle delivery prevent the song from being dismissed as an outright polemic. But the 2-Toner now saw the world only in black and white, searingly condemning everything around him. Which is why \"Mandela\" comes as such a shock smack-dab in the middle of the set. Its glorious melody, jubilant atmosphere, and exuberant optimism are the only bright moments on the entire album, a single song of hope which crumbles to dust by sequencing it just before the horrors of \"War Crimes.\" That, like everything else on this album, was deliberate, and underscored the total desolation that Dammers saw all around him. Tomorrow's Modern Boxes is deliberately underwhelming, an old-fashioned grower that doesn't startle upon first listen but rather slowly unfolds. Even then, the album is stubbornly subtle, with Yorke exploring the space between gaps, not the chasm itself. Less charitable listeners could call it mood music and they wouldn't be wrong, because Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich are so controlled, they offer variations of a theme instead of a wide palette. It's interesting -- once. Willie Nelson's \"Funny How Time Slips Away\" is mealy-mouthed and loose, feeling more like James trying to channel Tom T. Hall's sense of lonesome drama than its composer's tender, bittersweet resignation. He delivers a lo-fi, countrified take on the Orioles' nugget \"Crying in the Chapel\" with only a bucket of vocal reverb and an acoustic guitar, and it works. The late Diane Izzo's \"Wild Honey\" is sympathetically re-created here with an approach Mickey Newbury might have taken, with its lithe acoustic guitars, spacious delivery, and existential ache. The full-on honky tonk band version of Bob Dylan's \"I'll Be Your Baby Tonight\" sounds like it was recorded by an intoxicated singer trying to whip up imagined hillbilly authenticity. The wanton whimsy of the original is lost and replaced with an imagined projection of vulnerability, but the musical arrangement contradicts it. James' simple approach to Emerson, Lake \u0026amp; Palmer's \"Lucky Man\" takes liberties with pace, phrasing, and tempo, but is nonetheless quite moving. Abbey Lincoln's late-period masterpiece \"The World Is Fallin' Down,\" was no doubt inspired by James' collaborations with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, but her fluid, bluesy swing is nowhere to be found here. Instead, its lo-fi recording finds James with acoustic guitar and harmonium delivering a near-folk song approach. That said, his lovely falsetto gets multi-tracked and reaches into the lyrics' cracks to allow its emotional depth and the desire for comfort and hope to emerge. The set closes with a short, seemingly throwaway version of \"Blue Skies\" that feels tossed off. Ultimately, Tribute to 2 is uneven and fuzzy. When it works, it's lovely; when it doesn't, it's a head-scratcher.
