While apparently placid on the surface, in reality England has always had issues with class, race, and socio-political turmoil. In 1980 Margaret Thatcher had taken power as Prime Minister, and the youth culture that had usually reserved its disdain for the dominant Labor party had a compelling new target. Not so coincidentally, in 1980 The Jam released SETTING SONS, their strongest and most political album to date.
If The Jam's first three albums are a tribute to the resiliency of British working class youth, SETTING SONS is a call to arms. In the context of politically informed songs such as "Eton Rifles'" and "Burning Sky," even a cover of the Motown chestnut "Heatwave" seems to take on political connotations. The albums centerpiece, the haunting mini-epic "Little Boy Soldiers" leaves no doubt as to the intensity of Weller's ire, with its sarcastic references to shooting to kill for "Queen and country," and lambasting of United States support for Thatcher ("God's on our side and so is Washington"). Luckily the usual Weller hooks are there as well, so it's safe to hum along even without knowing what the fuss is all about.

Genre: Rock

Format: CD

Released: 12/09/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Jam-SETTING-SONS-DELUXE_MNtsP_dae478ec-6fae-4556-94b3-f42e4a67362a.jpg?v=1758737547
j-cole-2014-forest-hills-drive-explicit-content
2014 Forest Hills Drive [Explicit Content]
Audio Mixer: Juro "Mez" Davis.
Recording information: Jungle Studios, New York, NY; MSR Studios, New York, NY; Perfect Sound Studios, Hollywood, CA; Perfect Sound Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Windmark Studios, Santa Monica, CA.
Photographer: Anthony Blasko.
Named after the address of Cole's childhood home in North Carolina, 2014 Forest Hills Drive is the rapper's third album, and was decidedly released with no supporting singles. Starks is just looking to spend his later years chilling in familiar territory, but as the action movie lyrics and the accompanying comic book written by Matthew Rosenberg, explain, betrayal and Berettas are everywhere, so Starks dons his gas mask and schools the hood on what's good. The concept and presentation are wonderfully reminiscent of the rapper's 2013 collaboration with Adrian Younge, Twelve Reasons to Die, but if that excellent album was influenced by the Italian murder mystery/slasher film genre known as giallo, this one is bringing '70s Blaxploitation films back with all their funk and flare. Brooklyn band and production team the Revelations provide the funk, with wah-wah guitars, punchy drums, and popping bass creating an atmosphere where karate chops, pimps, and players are all in their element. This is also the atmosphere where comic book choruses like "Exquisite doctor, his work of art/Created a gas mask to save Tony Starks" ("Emergency Procedure" with Pharoahe Monch) become great singalong moments with an accompanying fist-in-the-air. Cooler, cinematic numbers thrive as well, and with that unique Ghostface style, like when "Homicide" goes from macabre ("I smell a massacre/I stick a bomb in your limo, blow up your passengers") to chuckle-worthy ("I'm stuck back on the couch like a potato"). Inspiration flows out of the man throughout the album, and this end-to-end concept is executed with little note-spinning or boring lyrics that just serve the story, and while Twelve Reasons took a big giallo risk and nailed it, this more expected, '70s-favored success still surprises with its vigorous sense of purpose. Besides Monch's appearance, Kool G Rap, Tre Williams, and AZ offer some great moments, while producer the 45 King joins the Revelations on "Blood on the Streets" for that old-school breakbeat rumble. ~ David Jeffries

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 12/09/2014

Maybe his breakthrough hit "Tell Me When to Go" was a threat, as the Bay Area slang king known as E-40 has kept a brutally prolific release schedule since 2011. It was then he released a quadrilogy of albums with Revenue Retrievin': Day Shift, Night Shift, Overtime Shift, and Graveyard Shift all landing within the year, then The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 1 landed in 2012, kicking off a series that would drop no less than six albums over the next two years. The 2014 release Sharp on All 4 Corners: Corner 1 (a sharp, minimal, and mean effort) set in motion another quadrilogy that used The Block Brochure's two-year roll-out plan, but this second Corner arrived right alongside, offering a more uneven, although more outgoing, batch of tunes. Compared to the lean and calculated Corner 1, Corner 2 butts redundant numbers together and plays for the radio with DeJ Loaf and Luigi the Singer pulling "Baddest in the Building" toward Chris Brown territory, while "Real Nigga" with Kirko Bangz sounds like it was pieced together from worthy T.I., T-Pain, and maybe even TLC numbers. Most everything else plays out like all-the-way live posse cuts with names like Mack 10, B-Legit, and Turf Talk all hitting hard, then there's the key cut "Sleep" where Ludacris and Plies join for a fantastic mashing of the cloud rap and gangsta rap genres. Sharp on All 4 Corners: Corner 2 suffers mostly from having a superior effort released right next to it, but with Corner 1 being such a narrow and low album, E-40's more hedonistic and hyphy fans might find this sweet relief. ~ David Jeffries

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 12/09/2014

The companion piece to the 1962-1966 singles compilation, this set (often called "the blue album," as opposed to its chronological predecessor "the red album"), brings together the Beatles best known songs from 1967 through 1970. The Beatles were fiercely, relentlessly experimental during these years, and the swirling, visionary soundscapes of "Strawberry Fields Forever," which opens the collection, sets the tone with its effects-heavy production and backward tape loops. John Lennon's psychedelic songwriting, which emphasized crystalline melodies and surreal wordplay, can be heard on tracks like "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" and "Across the Universe."
Paul McCartney's fascination with English music hall and novelty numbers is clear on "Penny Lane" and "Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da," and the set also has some of his finest ballads, including the mega-hits "Let It Be" and "Hey Jude." George Harrison emerged as a fine songwriting talent during these years with "Something" and "Here Comes the Sun." Yet despite evidence of their diverging individual directions, the Beatles still rock as a band on cuts like "Revolution." (The set includes the single versions of "Revolution," "Lady Madonna," and "Hey Jude"). Supported by another crop of male background vocalists, Gill once again sounds as if he's the leader of a group from time to time, but he is more prominent here, and the material -- contributed by Chuck Harmony, Claude Kelly, Gregg Pagani, and Vidal Davis, among others -- sticks a bit more. Gill benefits from a couple higher-profile collaborative songs. "This One's for Me and You" is a classy contemporary ballad made with New Edition, though it's closer to a duet between Gill and the group's Ralph Tresvant. The title track, a ballad about settling down that references sweet vintage soul and Roger Troutman at once, was produced by Babyface and Antonio Dixon. Stylistically, Game Changer is exceedingly varied. Mature contemporary sounds, sophisticated disco-funk, and Hi-like southern soul are handled with equal finesse. There's even a bit of nostalgia for the early '90s; some listeners might catch themselves thinking of Rude Boys' 1990 classic "Written All Over Your Face" while they play "Behind Closed Doors," the album's lead single. The only ill fit is the hard-charging EDM experiment "Guinevere," easy to quickly disregard and forget as the album's finale. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 12/09/2014

Arriving just eight months after the amiable Aussie psych-rockers' Oddments LP, I'm in Your Mind Fuzz finds King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard doing what they do best: Simultaneously assembling and dissembling semi-epic blasts of early Flaming Lips, 13th Floor Elevators, the High Strung, Thee Oh Sees, and Dungen-esque space/psych rock and having a great time while doing so. Opener "I'm in Your Mind" is a churning, Krautrock-inspired, largely stream of consciousness-driven road anthem that takes up the first half of the album (the ensuing "I'm Not in your Mind," "Cellophane," and "I'm in Your Mind Fuzz" are mere mile markers), and it serves as an excellent litmus test for listeners wondering how far into the fuzzy, fidelity-challenged, multi-colored waters they're willing to wade. The back half of the record is a tad more diverse, with highlights arriving via the loopy, beatnik-blasted "Hot Water," the epic pop posturing of "Her and I (Slow Jam 2)," and the fractured "Satan Speed Up," the latter of which sounds like a lo-fi amalgamation of Led Zeppelin's "The Rain Song" and anything off of MGMT's Congratulations. The band's overall distaste for sound quality will probably put some listeners off, as much of the record sounds like it was recorded in real time on an old Tascam four-track in somebody's basement, but King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard possess enough pop acumen and oddball charm to lure even the most unsuspecting psych-rock fan downstairs for a taste. Overtime Shift, and Graveyard Shift all landing within the year, then The Block Brochure: Welcome to the Soil 1 landed in 2012, kicking off a series that would drop no less than six albums over the next two years. The 2014 release Sharp on All 4 Corners: Corner 1 sets in motion another quadrilogy that uses The Block Brochure's two-year roll-out plan, but E-40 fans should check their already beat-up wallets, because this one balls hard. The abundance of minimal techno beats and hyphy lyrics found here all fall within E-40's comfort zone, and yet, he attacks these cuts with the punch and and the throwback nastiness of 2006's My Ghetto Report Card. Then, there's "Red Cup" with T-Pain, B.o.B., and Kid Ink helping to bring the Bay Area strip club anthem into 2014 as lyrics like "She can make some Guess Jeans stretch like polyester/Call me Lord Bobby, I'ma bless her with the scepter" say all there needs to be said. A decade later, Carrie Underwood was a genuine superstar who left her television roots far behind. Greatest Hits: Decade #1 helps bury those early American Idol memories by sandwiching her coronation song "Inside Your Heaven" between two bombastic new songs ("Something in the Water," the better of the two, opens up the proceedings, followed by "Little Toy Guns") and "Jesus, Take the Wheel," the song that truly kicked off her streak at the top of the country charts. Between 2005 and 2012, every song she released went to either number one or two on the Billboard country charts ("Some Hearts," serviced to adult contemporary, went to 12 on the AC charts and isn't here). Every one of those songs is here, along with the songs that stopped the streak: 2012's "Two Black Cadillacs" and 2013's "See You Again," which peaked at four and seven respectively, positions that are hardly shabby. As the years progressed, Underwood embraced her divahood and the shift occurs with 2009's "Cowboy Casanova," a number one smash that opens the second disc of this double-disc hits disc. It's a neat division but the 21 singles -- which are supplemented by three demos that reveal Carrie works well in a stark setting, too -- are of a piece, expertly constructed post-Shania and Faith Hill country-pop proving that Underwood is the new-millennial heir to their throne. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 12/09/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/carrie-underwood-greatest-hits-decade-1_rXNgb.jpg?v=1754338017
madi-diaz-phantom-digital-download-card
Phantom (Digital Download Card)
TracksCredits
- Disc 1 -
1 Tomorrow
2 Stay Together
3 Mess
4 Dancing in the Dark
5 First Time
6 Ghost Rider
- Disc 2 -
1 Other Side
2 Pictures
3 Wide
4 White Lightning
5 Ashes

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/09/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/madi-diaz-phantom-digital-download-card_rE5uO.jpg?v=1759143026
the-beatles-the-beatles-1962-1966-the-red-album-2-lp
The Beatles 1962-1966 (The Red Album) (2 Lp)
This superb compilation, often called "the red album," brings together the majority of the Beatles' hits from the early to mid '60s. Even while Andy Barlow's productions again set a gold standard for ambitious, evocative, intelligent accompaniment, Louise Rhodes' vocals have improved noticeably since the occasionally over-reaching Fear of Fours. Yes, her crying, confessional style of delivery can still wear (especially for a genre never overly enthusiastic about vocals to begin with), but she's obviously gained in control without sacrificing intensity. The opener, "What Sound," begins with a set of tender love lyrics, gradually expanding with orchestral strings and Barlow's tight, stop-time production. The paranoid breaks of "One" give way to a downright extroverted performance on "Sweet," though Rhodes saves her most pained vocals for the very next track, "I Cry." Barlow scorches on the Chemicals-style breaks and furious turntablism of "Scratch Bass," but then comes right back with a pair of beautiful ballads directed inwards. He's also unafraid to keep the backing (relatively) simple, even on the single "Gabriel." It's clear that every beat, every effect has been labored over, but thankfully that impression is an unconscious one. Another nice touch: the admirably low-profile appearances by excellent musicians like Arto Lindsay on guitar, Me'Shell Ndeg?Ocello on bass, and Michael Franti on vocals. Across the board, Premier is in top form on PRhyme, supplying moody beats sliced and reconstructed from instrumental recordings made exclusively for the album by multi-instrumentalist Adrian Younge. The effect is pure hip-hop gold, hard beats and throwback organ samples on "Courtesy" sounding like a RZA production from the first few early-'90s Wu-Tang-related albums and the streamlined psychedelic funk of "Wishin'" changing gears to a disorienting half-tempo just in time for a guest verse from Common -- just one of a star-studded list of guest contributions on the album, with Detroit-based rhyme spitter Dwele showing up on the cinematic "You Should Know," Slaughterhouse guesting on "Microphone Preemo," and big names like Killer Mike, ScHoolboy Q, Mac Miller, Jay Electronica, and others joining in as Royce delivers an endless stream of technically precise rhymes. Whether or not this justifies the padding and shagginess found on Hood Billionaire all depends on the listener's hunger for Ross and his slick brand of thug music, and yet the album is quite self-aware, putting a two-minute intro up front to act as hater repellent. Then, there's a taped, jailhouse phone call from Miami dealer Kenneth "Boobie" Williams woven throughout the LP, a hood endorsement that fans will relish as it makes the Ross mythology all the more real, but the real wins here are all the long, stretched-out "Elvis Presley Blvd."-styled bangers and the new creative opportunities they allow. On the hallucinatory, heavy, and haunting "Quintessential," special guest Snoop Dogg sounds truly renewed, and that's even considering his recent reggae rebirth, while "Brimstone," with Big K.R.I.T., is an excellent and organic funkster somewhere in the vicinity of George Clinton's Parliament or Raphael Saadiq. It's a task made even more difficult considering that, unlike violinist David Garrett's forays into classical rock, which add layers of orchestral production on top of his virtuoso skills, the two 24-year-olds' self-titled debut doesn't feature any other instruments. Luckily, the pair's masterful talents, which seem to produce sounds from a cello that otherwise wouldn't seem possible, more than make up for the lack of background support. Indeed, other than the deliberately sparse reworkings of Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt" and second Jackson interpretation "Human Nature," its 12 tracks very rarely feel as stripped-back as one might expect, as the duo replicates the twanging guitar hook from Dick Dale's Pulp Fiction theme "Misirlou," the crunching riffs of Nirvana's grunge classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit," and the lilting piano chords of Muse's "The Resistance," using a combination of plucking, bowing, and frantic strumming. While the bombastic treatments of "Smooth Criminal" and Guns N' Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle" have received all the attention, the whole concept is just as effective on the slower numbers, as they turn Sting's flamenco-tinged "Fragile" into a mournful Gypsy folk ballad and transform U2's "With Or Without You" into a poignant instrumental suitable for a soundtrack to a Jane Austen adaptation. The ambitious project only really falters on the one track, which on paper seems best suited to their craft, with their adaptation of "Viva la Vida" sounding surprisingly flat when compared to Coldplay's already string-soaked original. But 2Cellos is far from the classical karaoke affair one might have anticipated, as Sulic and Hauser have created an inventive first offering, with unique and innovative arrangements, that deserves to transcend their YouTube beginnings. ~ Jon O'Brien

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/09/2014

Since it was impossible to top the in-concert exuberance of their debut, KICK OUT THE JAMS, the MC5 re-emerged with a more refined sound for their sophomore effort, 1970's BACK IN THE U.S.A., their first studio record. Nervy, high-octane rockers bristling with pure adolescent energy--"Teenage Lust" and "Call Me Animal," among them--balance politically charged tracks like "The American Ruse." BACK IN THE U.S.A. may have been the MC5's most conventional album, but it is still an endlessly listenable rock & roll classic.

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/09/2014

Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor (Pict) is a Records & LPs from Rob Zombie

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/09/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/rob-zombie-venomous-rat-regeneration-vendor-pict_TpIb8.jpg?v=1758876542
rob-zombie-educated-horsespic
EDUCATED HORSES(PIC)
Like his brutal film THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, Rob Zombie's 2006 album, EDUCATED HORSES, strips down his macabre aesthetic, largely ditching the overt kitsch and busy, techno-tinged arrangements in favor of a heavy, 1970s-inspired stoner aesthetic. Black Sabbath and Alice Cooper's influence on Zombie have never been more apparent than on these 11riff-laden tracks, including the propulsive "Foxy Foxy," the scathing "Let It All Bleed Out," and the haunting title track to his aforementioned splatter movie, which he wrote, directed, and produced.
