Additional personnel: Ron Howe (saxophone). Producers: Robert Smith, Dave Allen, Howard Gray. With THE HEAD ON THE DOOR Robert Smith and the boys achieve a distinctively Cure-like pop sensibility. These 10 songs combine the dreary dreamscape that is Smith's mind with melodies that are about as catchy as Goth music gets (just try not clapping your hands to "Close to Me"). Included on the album are "In Between Days" and "A Night Like This," each a successful single, and each a staple of the Cure's live show. Also noteworthy are the haunting lyrics of "The Blood" and "Kyoto Song," which Smith sings in his trademark high-pitched howl. Despite the gloom, this album represents perhaps the Cure's first real pop effort. It also represents a transition from the sparse instrumentation that characterizes the early Cure sound, to the fuller, more complex incarnation typical of the almost psychedelic soundscapes of later albums.

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/10/2013

Best Sellers: Top Seller

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Cure-Head-on-the-Door-180-Gram-Vinyl-Import_lx4R1.jpg?v=1740584793
nightwish-showtime-storytime
SHOWTIME STORYTIME
To celebrate the end of the platinum-selling Finnish symphonic metal outfit's 2013 Imaginaerum World Tour, which boasted 104 performances in 34 countries, Nightwish decided to go out with a bang and bring their opulent live show to the tiny German village of Wacken and its mammoth annual metalfest, Wacken Open Air. It is a glimpse of the more accessible rock which Lou Reed wrote, but wasn't fully comfortable with until the group's third album. WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT also introduced guitar sounds and production so abrasive that the feel wasn't duplicated until even punk had matured into New York's downtown art/noise scene nearly twenty years later.
WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT is an exhausting exercise in opposites. The aching beauty of "Here She Comes Now" features a delicate guitar melody and Reed's most innocent vocals since the debut's "Sunday Morning"; it sniffs around Lou's taste for ballads, but throws in the cruel "oh she looks so good/oh she's made out of wood" refrain for effect. The title track would even be playful if not for the instrumental speed rushes and vocal harmonies so discordant they're sinister. It also turns out to be a perfect primer for "Sister Ray," a depraved freak show of prostitutes, junkies and what happens when the cops come banging at the door. Musically, "Sister Ray" is a jarring guitar crash, clocking in at 17:25, fully showing the Velvet's musical ferociousness. As organ washes clash with jagged locomotive guitars, Reed whirls off descriptions of sailors and transsexuals who "want to know a way to earn a dollar." Such snapshots into the Velvet Underground's twin sides make WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT indispensable.

Genre: Rock and Pop

Format: CD

Released: 12/10/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Velvet-Underground-WHITE-LIGHTWHITE-HE_kNvvN.jpg?v=1742338900
neil-young-live-at-the-cellar-door
LIVE AT THE CELLAR DOOR
Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, piano).
Audio Mixers: John Nowland; Tim Mulligan.
Liner Note Author: John Segraves.
Recording information: The Cellar Door, Washington DC (11/30/1970-12/02/1970).
Photographer: Gary Burden.
In late 1970, Neil Young was coming down from a bustling stretch of touring with the immensely popular Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and had just released his third solo album, After the Goldrush. That album, lodged between the jammy country rock of 1969's Crazy Horse-aided Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and the hushed, hermetic folk of 1972's Harvest, found an ethereal and otherworldly middle ground for Young's rapidly developing songwriting voice. Live at the Cellar Door finds a solo Young just a few months after the release of After the Goldrush, playing a six-show stint at the tiny Washington D.C. club, running through a set heavy on the relatively new material from Gold Rush, but also getting into songs that wouldn't see album release for a few more records yet. It would have been impossible to gauge at the time of the performance, but the set list of Live at the Cellar Door is a non-stop string of what would become some of Young's many timeless classics, punctuated by the sound of the unthinkably small audience clapping politely as he wove through 15 magical compositions on spare acoustic guitar and occasional piano. Not just heavy on highlights, this is a rare live recording that lacks any duds or missteps at all. Apart from near-perfect selections from After the Goldrush like its fever-dream title track, the heartbreaking "Birds," or the long look at growing up in "Tell Me Why," Young debuts future hit "Old Man" as well as the On the Beach piano dirge "See the Sky About to Rain." He also offers up a piano-only reading of "Cinnamon Girl," announcing "That's the first time I ever did that one on piano." Part of an ongoing archival series of key live dates from Young's massive career, Live at the Cellar Door includes snippets of the usual between-song banter, but a noticeably tired Young is more subdued even when making dry jokes. Sticking mostly to focused readings of his then-brand-new songs, he cultivates a somber mood, tapping into all the sorrow, wonder, and wistfulness of his early solo material as well as a few Buffalo Springfield tunes. These tracks feel much more like an album of alternate versions than a typical live recording. The intimacy and raw beauty of Live at the Cellar Door makes it not just a must for super fans, but a valuable companion piece to any of Young's early studio output. ~ Fred Thomas

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: n/a

Format: CD

Released: 12/10/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Neil-Young-LIVE-AT-THE-CELLAR-DOOR_MzB7Q.jpg?v=1740703679
bone-thugs-n-harm-art-of-war-iii
ART OF WAR III
Recording information: Ameraycan; Blackhole Studio; LA Studios; Paramount Studios; Rkitek Production Studio; Track House Studio; U-Neek's Spot.
Arranger: DJ U-Neek.
By 2013, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's discography was well down the path of diminishing returns with infighting, botched reunions, and members going to jail all contributing to their fall from grace, but every effort featured a track or two or more that had the faithful holding onto their hope. The messy but surprisingly inspired Art of War: WWIII takes the discussion in a new direction, as in what would a smaller, possibly Bizzy-led Bone sound like. Pre-release press had member Krayzie Bone declaring that he and Wish Bone weren't even on the album, and while he and Wish get some credits on some old tracks that are now refurbished (the old-school highlight "Approach 2 Danger" plus "It Will Be Alright" and "In Memory of Eazy"), this greyish market album doesn't even mention the usual Bone names, preferring to list the membership under their old nicknames like Straight Jacket and 5th Dog. Still, when "Murda on U" comes on hard with a sweet hook, reggae music, and Bizzy's old-school, killer callousness ("Blow your brain out, and in the same breath, say 'I love you man'") or "Bitch Iz a Bitch" finds the trio version of Bone partying over a N.W.A sample, the album comes alive and feels purposeful. The rest of the thrills come from steps outside the usual Bone comfort zone as "100-K" offers a hooky, entertaining, and intentionally overly Auto-Tuned stab at hick-hop, then Bizzy delivers a dubstep power ballad with "Deep End" and crams some 7th Sign symbolism in as if the bass drops were injecting him with psychedelics. The blinged-out, sweet '60s soul of "Bring It Back" sounds like nothing else in the Bone Thugs songbook, but a too-fat track list muddles up the excitement and the question remains if three-fifths of the group is enough for any fickle fan's return. Maybe not, but compared to all the other weird and/or wrong releases in the extended Bone discography, this is the most rewarding and far and away the most interesting. ~ David Jeffries

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 12/10/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Bone-Thugs-N-Harm-ART-OF-WAR-III_ABVfK.jpg?v=1758758174
louis-armstrong-ella-fitzgerald-ella-and-louis
Ella And Louis
Tracks
1 Can't We Be Friends? Long Hard Look is another slice of sleekly professional pop/rock, similar to Gramm's 1987 solo debut, Ready or Not. But whereas Ready or Not rather consistently combined melody with bite (side one specifically), Long Hard Look is spotty. Sonically, the difference between Foreigner and Gramm's solo albums is considerable and can be summed up in one word: warmth. Foreigner's music has a richer guitar, keyboard, and drum sound thanks to guitarist/keyboardist/producer Mick Jones, but Gramm's solo albums are more brittle. The tinny snare drum sound is juiced too high in the mix -- not quite to the threshold of pain, but darn close. Long Hard Look includes the Top Ten hit "Just Between You and Me" and the Top 40 hit "True Blue Love." Both were smooth pop singles, but the latter is the superior tune despite charting lower. Gramm does manage to rock a bit on three songs: "Angel With a Dirty Face," "I'll Come Running," and a cover of Small Faces' "Tin Soldier." The atmospheric "Warmest Rising Sun" is pleasant, and background vocals are contributed by Merry Clayton, best known for her astonishing work on the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter." Other well-known musicians providing assistance on Long Hard Look include guitarist Vivian Campbell (who later worked with Gramm on the one-off Shadow King project), guitarist Nils Lofgren, bass guitarist Pino Palladino, and vocalist Siedah Garrett. Bass guitarist/rhythm guitarist Bruce Turgon later joined Foreigner when Gramm returned to the band and resumed his partnership with Jones. ~ Bret Adams

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 12/10/2013

Producers include: Kevin Cronin, Gary Richrath, Kevin Beamish, Alan Gratzer.
Instead of taking some time off and plotting their next move after the massive success of 1981's HI INFIDELITY, REO Speedwagon went right back into the studio and issued a follow-up one year later--GOOD TROUBLE. Rather than another set of blasting, disturbing originals like 1994's Divine Intervention or 1995's Serenity in Murder EP, this album is a collection of covers. Containing 14 tracks, the band covers everyone from Minor Threat to T.S.O.L., from D.I. to Iggy Pop. Given Slayer's Huntington Beach, CA, homeland, the hardcore roots are plain enough. But HB is also a big metal town, and these cats as youngsters were exposed to everything from Mot?rhead to Black Sabbath and the early L.A. metal scene. True to their course, however, they've never sounded like anyone but themselves. Even on a collection of covers (with a pair of originals thrown in to boot), the Slayer imprint is unmistakable, and while taking a breather from fresh ideas on their own projects, this disc sounds like the bandmembers were having a blast if not exactly breaking new ground. All but two of these cuts are less than three minutes long, with a number of them come in under two -- in keeping with true hardcore fashion. Even on the completely over-the-rail covers of Minor Threat's "Filler/I Don't Want To Hear It" and "Guilty of Being White," the guitar breaks are unmistakably their own. Paul Bostaph's thin drumming (as opposed to founding drummer Dave Lombardo's) is actually more suited to this material. The cover of the Stooges' "I Wanna Be Your Dog" contains the title "I'm Gonna Be Your God" -- it wouldn't do for Slayer to be thought of in any way submissive, would it? (Although none would have cared but them, which tells you where they're coming from.) The band basically improves upon D.I.'s "Spiritual Law," and the long reach into Minor Threat's catalog -- four tracks done in a pair of medleys -- offers a few more examples of where Slayer come from. They are extremely heavy and extremely brief cuts, but pack a wallop. For those looking toward Slayer's more direct roots, there are a pair of early experiments from a project Jeff Hanneman was in, "I Can't Stand You" and "Ddamn," and a Slayer newbie called "Gemini," clocking in just under five minutes and offering a glimpse into the future of sludge and doom metal before it twists and turns on a dime and becomes a more typically trademarked Slayer number. Undisputed Attitude is a curiosity; it's far from an essential collection by Slayer. The true faithful will want this and most likely really get off on it. For those who admire what the band had accomplished musically to this point, it feels like a bit of a letdown, really. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/10/2013

Foreigner: Lou Gramm (vocals); Mick Jones (guitar, piano); Ian McDonald (guitar, keyboards); Al Greenwood (keyboards, synthesizers); Rick Willis (bass); Dennis Elliott (drums).
Producers: Roy Thomas Baker, Mick Jones, Ian McDonald.
Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York. Yet Caramel does take musical and thematic inspiration from that album's poignantly woozy title track, which Erol Alkan reworked into an indie club hit. Mockasin claimed that the story Caramel's songs told picked up where Forever Dolphin Love left off, though this isn't the kind of concept album with a strong narrative thrust. Instead, he riffs on notions of romance and the kind of sounds and images the title Caramel suggests: the album overflows with sweetly sensual, acid rock-meets-R&B songs and guitars so languid they seem to stretch and drip. He does a better than average job of serving up and sending up all of sexy music's signifiers on the album's instrumentals, but it's when Mockasin adds his reedy tenor to the mix that Caramel really gets weird. His helium-laced singing on "I'm the Man, That Will Find You" evokes Ween's homages to Prince -- and even some of the Purple One's own oddities -- but the songwriting is traditional enough to envision someone like Bread singing it as well.

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/10/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/neil-young-live-at-the-cellar-door_0H1Yk.jpg?v=1740706232
onyx-bacdafucup
BACDAFUCUP
Onyx: Fredro Starr, Big D.S., Suave, Sticky Fingaz.
Additional personnel: Chyskillz, Jam Master Jay, Big Steve (various instruments); Reggie Woods (saxophone); Mac Gellenon (trumpet).
Producers include: Chyskillz, Jam Master Jay, Kool Tee, Jeff Harris.
When their song "Slam" unexpectedly became an enormous crossover hit in 1993, Onyx's fate was unfairly sealed as one-hit wonders. With its five number one singles, the 2010 album turned Katy Perry into a genuine superstar, the kind of musician whose image rivaled her music in popularity, the kind who could topline her own 3-D theatrical documentary, the kind whose name became shorthand for a sugar-pop sensibility. This meant there was only one thing left for her to do on its 2013 sequel, Prism: to make a graceful pivot from teen dream to serious, mature artist. Prism hits these marks precisely yet isn't stuffy, not with its feints at trap-rap, but even with the preponderance of nightclub glitz, there isn't a shadow of a doubt that Katy Perry has toned down her cheesecake burlesque, opting for a hazy, dreamy, sun-kissed hippie Californian ideal that quietly replaces the happily vulgar pinup of her earliest years. All the lingering nastiness of One of the Boys -- the smiling Mean Girl backstabbing of "Ur So Gay," for instance -- and the pneumatic Playboy fantasy of Teenage Dream are unceremoniously abandoned in favor of Perry's candy construct of a chipper, cheerful grown-up prom princess, the popular girl who has left all her sneering dismissals in the past. Perry remains a terminal flirt but she channels her energies into long-term relationships -- the sexiest song, "Birthday," is a glorious retro-disco explosion delivered to a steady boyfriend, while elsewhere she testifies toward unconditional love -- and the overall effect transforms Prism into a relatively measured, savvy adult contemporary album, one that's aware of the latest fashions but is designed to fit into Katy's retirement plan. Ultimately, this makes Prism a tighter, cleaner record than its predecessors -- there are no extremes here, nothing that pushes the boundaries of either good taste or tackiness; even when she cheers on excess on "This Is How We Do" she's not a participant but rather a ringmaster, encouraging her fans to spend money they don't have just so they can have a good time. Ultimately, this sense of reserve reveals just how canny Katy Perry really is: she's determined to give her career a dramatic narrative arc, eager to leave behind the bawdy recklessness of her early years in favor of something that's age appropriate. That's why the lead single from Prism was "Roar," an homage to Sara Bareilles so transparent that the singer/songwriter may deserve co-credit: the inspirational adult contemporary single signaled how Perry no longer views herself as a fluffy confection but rather a showbiz staple who'll be here for years and years, and Prism fully lives up to that carefully constructed ideal. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/10/2013

!!!
