Photographer: Bella Howard. For a while, Charli XCX seemed to be tiptoeing into the spotlight. After co-writing and singing on Icona Pop's smash hit "I Love It," her album True Romance -- which had a darker, indie-friendly sound -- earned more acclaim than sales. Her next big break came with another collaboration, 2014's inescapable "Fancy," where she provided the sing-songy chorus to Iggy Azalea's brash verses. On Sucker, she keeps more of that hit-making swagger for herself, delivering attention-getting pop that's bold enough to ensure she isn't overshadowed by anybody. She makes her purpose clear with the album's title track, a musical middle finger to the clueless set to revved-up synths and stabbing guitars. It's a big change from the gothy pop of True Romance, though even on that album, XCX's hooks were undeniable. Sucker is also full of should-be hits, but these songs also show how creatively she fashions the shiniest parts of the '80s, '90s, 2000s, and 2010s into her own highly stylized sound. "Famous" bops along on a riff that nods to Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"; there's a bit of Elastica in "Breaking Up"'s buzzsaw guitars and flirty put-downs; "Caught in the Middle" could be vintage Gwen Stefani; and "Doing It"'s retro dance-pop feels equally informed by XCX's own fascination with the '90s and HAIM's update on that decade. Similarly, Charli still exudes plenty of sass on Sucker, but the exact kind of attitude has changed. She retrofits some of True Romance's atmosphere on "Boom Clap," turning it into a sparkly anthem to young love that seems more innocent than it actually is. If she was trying to keep up with the hip kids before, now she sounds like an older sister sharing her tricks on "Break the Rules," where she's literally too cool for school. Anytime it feels like XCX may have oversimplified her sound -- like the notable absence of one of her finest singles, "Superlove" -- she proves otherwise. There's a realness to her writing no matter how shiny the album's surfaces are, and while these songs are influenced by the success she's had with others, she's saved her most personal songs for herself. It's hard to imagine any of her collaborators or contemporaries belting out a lyric like "When I'm driving down the wrong side of the road, I feel like JFK you know" with as much mischievous glee as Charli does on the standout "London Queen"; later, she states her independence, sexual and otherwise, on "Body of My Own." From song to song, she bounces from hanging out in her friends' bedroom to flying on private jets, making both sound like the coolest possible thing to do. Sucker's mix of youth and sophistication is more than a little volatile, and sometimes it feels like XCX is still figuring out what really works for her music. Nevertheless, it succeeds as an introduction to Charli XCX the Pop Star while retaining her whip-smart songwriting and attitude.

Tracklist

1 Sucker
2 Break The Rules
3 London Queen
4 Breaking Up
5 Gold Coins
6 Boom Clap
7 Doing It
8 Body Of My Own
9 Famous
10 Hanging Around
11 Die Tonight
12 Caught In The Middle
13 Need Ur Luv

*Audio and/or tracklist may vary slightly from the CD version.

Label: ATLANTIC
Rel. Still, it's the small, simple confessional "I Lied" that comes off the best, putting a long-term relationship to rest with all the confusion ("Even though I said don't touch me, I lied") and pride ("That shit wasn't real, it was magic") that most other breakup songs miss. "Grand Piano" is a close second as Nicki's complicated heart demands committed lovers and pities those not up to the task, while "Get on Your Knees" with Ariana Grande is equally as strong but from another angle, putting listeners in the body position of delivering oral sex and suggesting we all play the rebound lover at one point or another. After all, "It builds character," which, in the end, seems to be the album's outlook on life itself. Four is the band's fourth album in four years, each released just in time for optimal holiday-season gift-giving. It's their fourth well-crafted, packed-with-great-pop-songs album in a row. Despite rumors flying about possible collaborations with everyone from John Legend to Pharrell to Good Charlotte, the band mostly worked with the same production team from Midnight Memories (Julian Bunetta and John Ryan) to craft an album that sounds perfectly up to date, but also just different enough from the usual chart-fodder to sound distinctive. Though the group and its team generally do a fine job with ballads, the tracks on Four with a little more life in them are the standouts. "Girl Almighty" is an odd mixture of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," Paul Simon, and Bollywood pop that doesn't sound like anything else on the charts, a couple tracks ("Stockholm Syndrome," "Fireproof") follow HAIM's lead and mix Fleetwood Mac-inspired vocal harmonies and sweetly slick '80s pop in a very pleasant way, and a handful more continue the group's odd but welcome fascination with '80s pop/rock, especially the very, very Journey-sounding "Steal My Girl." "Where Do Broken Hearts Go," too, feels like it time-traveled from the airwaves of an AOR station in 1984, where it was happily sandwiched between cuts by Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams. These tracks sound so good they can't help but overshadow the ballads that make up the rest of the record. It's becoming more clear with each record that in their current incarnation, the guys in One D are way better at the fun songs than they are at the ballads. The lads sound very convincing as carefree party boys or slightly melancholic crooners, and luckily on Four the scales are tipped heavily in favor of the kind of songs they do best, with the majority of them sounding like good-time hits that will go a long way toward warming up a cold November night. ~ Tim Sendra

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/15/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/one-direction-four-gatefold-lp-jacket_qf8UG.jpg?v=1743788081
lauryn-hill-the-miseducation-of-lauryn-hill-2-lps
The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (2 Lp's)
TracksCredits
- Disc 1 -
1 Intro
2 Lost Ones
3 Ex-Factor
4 To Zion
5 Doo Wop (That Thing)
- Disc 2 -
1 Superstar
2 Final Hour
3 When It Hurts So Bad
4 I Used to Love Him
- Disc 3 -
1 Forgive Them Father
2 Every Ghetto, Every City
3 Nothing Even Matters
- Disc 4 -
1 Everything Is Everything
2 The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
3 Can't Take My Eyes Off of You
4 Tell Him

Genre: Rap

RSD Date: n/a

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/15/2014

Best Sellers: Top Seller

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/lauryn-hill-the-miseducation-of-lauryn-hill-2-lps_JUjDn.jpg?v=1740158155
genesis-selling-england-by-the-pound-180-gram-vinyl
Selling England By the Pound (180 Gram Vinyl)
If one had to pare the prog-rock story down to a handful of essential albums, this would undoubtedly be one of them. In the four years since 2010's downbeat, mostly instrumental Senior, producers Svein Berge and Torbjorn Brundtland have continued to shift their focus toward singles and collaborations, working with Swedish pop star Robyn on a 2013 mini-album, offering up a pair of new tracks on their Late Night Tales compilation, and basically doing whatever their whimsy dictates. Their alignment with prominent European vocalists has been a recurring theme since their 2002 Erlend Oye (Kings of Convenience)-assisted breakthrough "Poor Leno," with each consecutive album (excepting Senior) boasting more and more cameos as they transitioned from chillout pioneers to pop songsmiths. In that respect, The Inevitable End plays like a revue of sorts with a vocal-heavy rotation of guests including Robyn, Susanne Sundfor, Jamie McDermott (the Irrepressibles), and Ryan James (Man Without Country). The inclusion of the 2013 Sundfor-fronted single "Running to the Sea" and a reworking of their Robyn collaboration "Monument" almost make it seem like they've already moved past the inevitable end and become the singles-only act they've alluded to, but there is a tangible enough thread connecting each of the tracks to make this curtain call a generally cohesive set. Among the vocal-fronted fare, the new version of "Monument" is truly a highlight, featuring R?yksopp's trademark nasty bass-synth squelch and Robyn's powerful (and thematically appropriate) declaration of "This will be my monument, this will be a beacon when I'm gone." Likewise, the dreamy McDermott-led "You Know I Have to Go" also expresses a sort of elegant finality with a melody and vibe that recalls their early classic "Remind Me." McDermott's voice appears three more times on the album, sweetening each cut with his barrel-aged croon and acting as a sort of foil against the more aggressive tones of the Robyn-led songs. Bookending the album are three unassisted tracks that display the compositional flair, bite, wit, and dramatics that have made this duo so special over the past decade. Album-opener and lead single "Skulls" is possibly one of the darkest, most dangerous tracks Berge and Brundtland have ever produced, leaping out of the speakers with its low, gritty throb and menacing vocoder harmonies. On the back end, they close out their final act with the haunted Wendy Carlos-esque, "Moonlight Sonata" nod "Coup de Grace," which sets up the wistfully downbeat farewell track "Thank You," again utilizing their familiar vocoder harmonies to express words of gratitude, friendship, and loyalty. It's a strong finale in the duo's signature style and whether or not this truly is the end or merely the end of their album era, The Inevitable End sits among the best in R?yksopp's catalog. ~ Timothy Monger

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Released: 12/15/2014

Personnel: Warren Haynes (vocals, guitar); Danny Louis (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Ron Holloway (saxophone); Matt Abts (drums, percussion); Machan Taylor, Durga McBroom, Sophia Ramos (background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Gordie Johnson.
Recording information: The Orpheum Theatre, Boston, MA (10/31/2008).
Gov't Mule's show on Halloween 2008 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts has since become a legendary one among the group's many fans. Pynchon's tale, which follows a Los Angeles detective as he investigates the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend in 1970, is considerably more lighthearted than either There Will Be Blood or The Master, and Greenwood's music reflects mid-century L.A.'s seedy underbelly as well as the novel's intricate blend of intrigue, humor, and philosophy. Greenwood introduces Inherent Vice's major theme, "Shasta," with strings and woodwinds that cast an air of shadowy longing that grows into a sweeping mirage on "Shasta Fay" and condenses into a poignant, piercing melody that recalls the emotional intensity of a silent film score on "Shasta Fay Hepworth." Elsewhere, he expands on the story's mystery with the Bernard Herrmann-esque "The Chryskylodon Institute" and "The Golden Fang," which also nod to the density and complexity of his own score for The Master. However, reflecting Inherent Vice's setting, Greenwood's cues share the spotlight with more pop songs than ever before. They're artfully chosen and blended with the score, offering new perspectives on each. The charming kitsch of the Marketts' "Here Comes the Ho-Dads," Les Baxter's "Simba," and Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki" provides relief and contrast from the tense ambiguity of Greenwood's music, while the exquisite mix of rawness and finesse in Can's "Vitamin C" adds to the suspense. Like the novel the film was based on, Inherent Vice's songs share intriguing connections. "Spooks" was originally an unfinished Radiohead song before Greenwood fleshed it out with contributions from Supergrass' Gaz Coombes and Danny Goffey and Joanna Newsom's narration; later, Minnie Riperton's "Fleur" feels like a precursor to Newsom's own bohemian style. The soundtrack's bittersweet undercurrents come to the fore with Neil Young's wry "Journey Through the Past" and Chuck Jackson's brilliant "Any Day Now," ensuring that things never get too cerebral. In its own way, Inherent Vice is as subtly and carefully crafted as Greenwood's other scores for Anderson's films, but its wit and heart make it special in its own right. ~ Heather Phares

Genre: Soundtracks

Format: CD

Released: 12/15/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/inherent-vice-score-ost-inherent-vice-score-ost_qRYSk.jpg?v=1759061528
nicki-minaj-the-pinkprint-exp
THE PINKPRINT (EXP)
Recording information: Conway Recording Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Eightysevenfourteen Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Evdon Studios, Toronto, Canada; Glenwood Recording Studios, Burbank, CA; Jungle City Studios, New York, NY; Luke's In The Boo, Malibu, CA; Record Plant, Hollywood, CA.
Although it was explained in pre-release promo material as a return to her early hardcore rap style, Nicki Minaj's third studio album landed as the diva's own 808s & Heartbreak, although one with an extra booty-worshiping summer hit ("Anaconda") plus some bad ballers that really do bring back mixtape memories ("Feeling Myself," where special guest Beyonc? acts like a wonderful cross of Lil' Kim and Grace Jones; then there's the traptastic "Only," which is just too nasty to summarize). "Trini Dem Girls" is an oddball, although quite enjoyable, dancehall plaything that barely fits on the LP as well, but the rest is a deep dive into breakups, heartache, and rebirth. "Bed of Lies" with Skylar Grey, "All Things Go," and "The Crying Game" are superior, stylized R&B and pop blends that find Nicki singing more and revealing much more than previously. Family problems, addiction, and poverty are always knocking at Under Pressure's bedroom door, but the bedroom walls are lined with pictures of hip-hop heroes of all sorts, as "Bounce" finds the joy and creative outlet in a genre that goes "from Project Pat to Dilla." Phone messages from family weave in and out of the album, some of them now sober and asking the rapper to stop speaking of the past, but like the posters on the wall, they're just influences and milestones, as this feature-less album is filled to the brim with Logic, because with such insight, charm, honesty, and outlook, it absolutely should be. Likewise, "Under Pressure" is almost ten minutes long because that's what such a complex track deserves, embracing how the rapper's upswinging life is all tangles and contrasts, from a sister dealing with a post-rape life along with kids who hate her, and all while Logic is in danger of morphing into a fame-fed hypebeast ("I know that birthday, I missed it/I swear I told my assistant, but.."). Producer 6ix offers up fresh R&B ("Soul Food") and A$AP Mob-ish dream sequences ("Gang Related") while Logic goes whiz kid with his production on the pop-tacular highlight "Buried Alive." Even if this ambitious album is extremely busy with genre-hops, segues, sampled voices, and interludes popping up, it isn't cluttered, as if blueprints and album outlines were thoroughly discussed and tested, probably with executive producer No I.D.'s final approval. Just like Kendrick's stunning Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Under Pressure is an autobiographical and odds-beating debut that arrives more fully formed than expected.
