Foregoing hipster Brooklyn for the more collegiate Upper West Side campus of Columbia, the quartet's music follows suit. This is hardly the loft-party lysergia of their counterparts across the East River; rather, it's a catchy cocktail of ethno-rhythms, psych-lite instrumentation, twee sensibilities, and an Animal Collective-style, anything-goes spirit.
Instead of feigning street cred, the band wear their upbringing on their sleeves (literally), with songs about Cape Cod and the polo shirts and deck shoes to match. While Paul Simon's man-child melodies appear all over VAMPIRE WEEKEND, cuts such as the stand-out single "A-Punk" recall another quartet of infamous Africa-plundering, New York preppies: the Talking Heads. With guitarist Ezra Koenig's intricately inventive lines, Chris Tomson's ever-shifting grooves, and Rostam Batmanglij's faux-melodica keyboard melodies, Vampire Weekend have the musical muscle to merit the fever-pitched hype.

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP standard Gatefold Jacket

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: EMB

Format: Vinyl

Internal ID: JITRE

Released: 02/19/2008

Best Sellers: Top Seller

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Vampire-Weekend-Vampire-Weekend_HThrB.jpg?v=1741082146
aerosmith-gems-cd
- Gems (CD)

The Aerosmith Gems CD contains the best of the band's greatest hits. A Broadway legend, Minnelli is heard on this "best of" collection singing no less than 15 upbeat, show-stopping tunes, taken from a mixture of studio and concert settings. One of Minnelli's strongest performances is the sultry "Cabaret." On this piece, Minnelli's voice is simply brimming with enthusiasm. Her elocution is razor-sharp and her words soar far above the orchestra.
On "Ring Them Bells," Minnelli also sings with great zeal, and it's easy to get swept up in the raw emotion of the love story being described. On this track, Minnelli's phrasing is impeccable, and she commands the listener's attention with every syllable. The climax, however, is "New York, New York." As before, her voice climbs into the stratosphere while the orchestra swings hard beneath her. Unlike some Broadway divas, Minnelli's persona is very powerful on record. Few of her contemporaries can turn a show tune into a truly life-affirming experience like she can, and this is Minnelli's rare gift.

Genre: Rock and Pop

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Liza-Minnelli-The-Best-of-Liza-Minnelli-Columbia_EHTA6.jpg?v=1759159065
the-dictators-go-girl-crazy
GO GIRL CRAZY
Before Mohawks, safety pins, and Doc Martens became the most prevalent signifiers of punk rock, New York City's the Dictators were positing an entirely different take on the concept. Sure, fuzzed-out glam guitars, primal drumming, and attitude-laced vocals made up the essential musical blueprint, but, for the Dictators, comic books, pro wrestling, pizza, and fast cars (and girls) held considerably more sway over their warped minds than anarchy, politics, and rioting in the streets. Led by Afroed frontman Handsome Dick Manitoba, the Dictators (who also featured, at various points, NYC punk legend Andy Shernoff) represented a considerably simpler version of punk rock--one that, although at the time was seen as the music of degenerate youth, in retrospect is far more charming than threatening. GO GIRL CRAZY is the essence of what punk was originally supposed to be about: a return to rock & roll's roots in good old-fashioned fun.

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

Tony Williams Lifetime: Tony Williams (drums); Allan Holdsworth (guitar); Alan Pasqua (keyboards); Tony Newton (bass, vocals).
Includes liner notes by Lee Jeske.
Tracks 1-6, originally released as BELIEVE IT (PC 33836), were recorded in July 1975 in New York. Tracks 7-13, originally released as MILLION DOLLAR LEGS (PC 34263), were recorded at Caribou Ranch Studios in June 1976.
This CD has all of the music from drummer Tony Williams' Believe It and Million Dollar Legs LPs. The best-known version of Williams' Lifetime is the trio he led during 1969-1970 with guitarist John McLaughlin and organist Larry Young. There are times (particularly on the first half of this reissue) that this later edition of Lifetime approaches the power and creativity of the original group. Key among the sidemen is guitarist Allan Holdsworth, a very underrated and creative musician whose style falls between rock and jazz and who often improvises more like a keyboardist than a guitarist. Alan Pasqua on electric piano and bassist Tony Newton (who also takes a few forgettable vocals) complete the group; background brass and strings are added to some of the songs in the later date. Although not flawless (some of the music has dated), these long-overlooked performances are worth exploring by fusion collectors, especially for Holdsworth's fiery yet thoughtful solos. ~ Scott Yanow

Genre: Jazz

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Tony-Williams-LIFETIME-THE-COLLECTION_ndiMf.jpg?v=1759334922
impressions-very-best-of-the-impressions
VERY BEST OF THE IMPRESSIONS
Recorded between 1963 and 1975. Beginning with the early hits "Gypsy Woman" and "It's All Right," this chronological 16-track collection compiles the best from the Impressions' growing social consciousness ("People Get Ready," "Keep on Pushing," "Amen"), then charts the later Curtis Mayfield days with "We're a Winner," "This Is My Country," "Choice of Colors," and "Check out Your Mind." As sometimes happens on a Rhino set, however, the compilers were overly reliant on the pop charts: many superior songs from their early and middle years -- "I'm So Proud" and "Mighty Mighty (Spade and Whitey)," to name only two -- are sacrificed for three post-Curtis Mayfield songs, when only one, "Finally Got Myself Together (I'm a Changed Man)," was really necessary. In the former song, the ghouls are the paparazzi snapping pictures of Jackson's baby, and he asks of them, "Who gave you the right...Are you the ghost of jealousy?" In the next song, the ghosts turn out to be the many public faces of Michael Jackson, and he turns the image around, suggesting that ghoulishness is in the eye of the beholder: "If you wanna see eccentricalities/I'll be grotesque before your eyes...Is that scary for you, baby?"
It's a declaration of self-confidence, and Jackson follows with feisty remixes of songs from HISTORY, including a version of "2 Bad" peppered with a sample of "Beat It," and a Madonna-like disco mix of "Stranger In Moscow."

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Michael-Jackson-BLOOD-ON-THE-DANCE-FLOOR-HISTORY-IN-THE-MIX_wykK7_822d46e2-1880-463b-a180-26f8b75856a1.jpg?v=1759034949
webbie-savage-life-2
SAVAGE LIFE 2
After a three-year hiatus, Trill Entertainment's Webbie returns in 2008 with SAVAGE LIFE 2, the simply named sequel to his acclaimed debut. Recorded live in 1976 and 1977 by producer Norman Dayron at the Old Waldorf nightclub on Bloomfield's home turf in San Francisco with a hand-picked band, the results are startling to say the least. Bloomfield plays with assurance and authority throughout, exploring new ideas with each new chorus from his guitar, arguably at his best since his early Butterfield/Dylan days. He plays a lot of slide guitar here, too, and tracks like "Bad Luck Baby," "The Sky Is Crying," "Dancin' Fool," and "Buried Alive in the Blues" showcase his mighty talents with the bottleneck, taking the lessons learned firsthand from Robert Nighthawk to places new and wild. Bloomfield was never much of a singer, and everybody from old pal Nick Gravenites to bassist Roger Troy to drummer Bob Jones ends up handling all the vocals on this disc. But one listen to the "Blues Medley" that kicks off the proceedings is reason enough to know why Bloomfield's reputation on his chosen instrument ranks up there with the greats. As the title suggests, Manilow assumes the role of the smoky lounge balladeer in the wee small hours of the morning, gracefully crooning blue-tinged tales of heartbreak for the few remaining customers. Not only is the singer's buttery tenor well suited for the sultry ballads on this disc, but his choice of sidemen and duet partners is nothing short of genius.
A sextet including bari-sax master Gerry Mulligan, legendary drummer Shelly Manne and stylish guitarist Mundell Lowe tastefully supports Manilow with grace and expressive virtuosity. All five members wrote material for Hurry Sundown: vocalist/lead guitarist Billy Jones, vocalist/guitarist Henry Paul, vocalist/lead guitarist Hughie Thomasson, new vocalist/bass guitarist Harvey Dalton Arnold, and drummer Monte Yoho. One significant influence on the album is producer Bill Szymczyk. It's obvious his work with the Eagles sharpened the Outlaws' harmony vocals on Hurry Sundown. "Gunsmoke" is a vibrant rocker with lots of guitar soloing; the Outlaws didn't feature three guitarists for nothing. The bright country-rock chorus is the foundation of "Hearin' My Heart Talkin'." Arnold's "So Afraid" is a strangely compelling country song with two distinctly different parts: emotionally fragile lyrics supported by happy-go-lucky music driven by Thomasson's cheerful banjo playing. Thomasson's excellent "Hurry Sundown," an edgy story song with piercing guitar lines, was a minor hit single. "Cold and Lonesome" is a relaxed, swaying tune contributed by Arnold. The major discovery on Hurry Sundown is Jones' startling "Night Wines." This mournful, haunting song features a regret-filled protagonist drinking at night while lamenting the sad inevitability of aging. "Night Wines" must be at least partly autobiographical, because Jones, an obviously tortured soul, battled alcoholism before leaving the band by 1982 and, ultimately, took his own life in 1995 at age 45. About the first half of "Man of the Hour" is slow country with twangy electric guitars and Thomasson's pedal steel guitar, but then the tempo shifts to a mid-tempo jam; along the way, guest Joe Vitale adds simple, effective synthesizer/strings fills. Buddha Records (aka Buddah Records) was scheduled to issue Hurry Sundown on CD for the first time in the summer of 2001. ~ Bret Adams

Genre: Rock and Pop

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

Can: Damo Suzuki (vocals); Michael Karoli (guitar); Irmin Schmidt (keyboards); Holger Czukay (bass); Jaki Liebezeit (drums).
Can: Damo Suzuki (vocals); Michael Karoli (guitar); Irmin Schmidt (keyboards); Holger Czukay (bass instrument); Jaki Liebezeit (drums).
Can were one of the most influential bands to emerge from Europe in the 70s, and this 1972 masterpiece marked a crucial stage in the development from the edgy experimentalism of their earlier albums to the softer ambience of their later work. COLD SPRING HARBOR contains the lovely devotional ballad "She's Got a Way," which became a hit when a live version was released more than a decade later (on SONGS IN THE ATTIC). It also features a couple of frenetically catchy melodies in "Everybody Loves You Now" and "Falling of the Rain" (whose arpeggiated piano playing would become a Joel trademark). The words often seem like afterthoughts--something to sing the melodies with--but there sure are a lot of them. "Everybody Loves You Now," about the isolation of fame (did he know something even then?), has more verses than you'd think anyone could fit into two and a half minutes. The original album was mistakenly sped up in the mastering process and was long a source of embarrassment to Joel. Less than ten years into Kenny Lattimore's career, Columbia saw fit to release a greatest-hits compilation covering Lattimore's quiet but immensely successful R&B career. Like many of his forefathers and contemporaries, Lattimore has mastered the art of the smooth ballad and has made several of his influences more than widely known in his vocal delivery and productions (immediate and somewhat convenient comparisons would be to Marvin Gaye and Babyface). The idea of this being a best-of is plausible, but two albums do not a greatest-hits compilation make, especially considering the quality cuts from 2003's The Things That Lovers Do that could supplement the brief moments of filler here. With that in mind, those who missed out on From the Soul of Man and Lattimore's eponymously titled debut would be well served in checking this out for an excellent catch-up primer. ~ Rob Theakston

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/kenny-lattimore-the-best-of-kenny-lattimore_9BWsF.jpg?v=1759159085
yes-magnification
MAGNIFICATION
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals, acoustic & synthesized guitars); Steve Howe (acoustic, electric & steel guitars, mandolin); Alan White (piano, drums, percussion, background vocals); Chris Squire (bass, background vocals).
Engineers include: Tim Weidner, Nick Sevilla, John Elder.
Recorded at Sound Design Studios, Santa Barbara, California.
Composer: Larry Group?.
Yes: Jon Anderson (vocals, guitar); Steve Howe (guitar); Alan White (drums); Chris Squire .
Personnel: Steve Howe (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, steel guitar, mandolin); Chris Squire (vocals, bass guitar).
Audio Mixers: Tim Weidner; Steve MacMillan.
Recording information: Sound Design Studios, Santa Barbara, CA.
Yes brings its sweeping brand of art rock to new heights with MAGNIFICATION, the band's first orchestral album since 1970's TIME AND A WORD. The tried and true quartet of Anderson, Squire, Howe, and White have done justice to this album's title; their latest sonic landscape is both magnified and enhanced by composer/arranger Larry Groupe. Groupe's role so symbiotic and integral it's as if he's a longtime band member in Yes and his instrument is the orchestra he conducts.
What sets MAGNIFICATION apart from your typical rock-band-with-orchestra project is the arrangements. Rather than adding clutter or tacky overstatement, the orchestral parts take on a voice that at times acts as subtle foundation, and finds the perfect moments to act as a lead "instrument." The title track strolls with majesty, following with the crushing emotional crescendos of "Spirit of Survival." The trademark Yes chorus is splendidly present on "Don't Go," which breaks into a quirky, theatric mid-section. A dramatic score opens "Give Love Each Day" as the band shows a beauty and restraint lacking in many of their progressive rock contemporaries. The album is comprised of traditional country songs from the '30s and '40s popularized by legendary performers like Jimmy Rodgers, Jimmy Davis, Gene Autry, and the Delmore Brothers. The blue country band features contemporary acoustic virtuosos Sam Bush on mandolin, Jerry Douglas on dobro, bassist Byron House, and Grammy-winner B?la Fleck on banjo, backing Kaukonen's nimble fingers and gruff vocals. The whole album carries an easygoing vibe throughout; whether Kaukonen is waiting for a train, recounting his promiscuous tomcat, or escaping from a chain gang, his voice maintains a relaxed feel, and the "no overdubs" recording style gives it a real "living room jam" kind of sound. On "New York State Of Mind" Joel borrows from a previously hidden influence--R&B crooner and fellow piano man Ray Charles--and comes up with one of his greatest songs, and one of the best anyone's written about the Big Apple.

Genre: Pop

RSD Date: AAD

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/billy-joel-turnstiles_1ZbZU_42b483bc-a82a-44dc-aa35-f8401f2593d3.jpg?v=1740178247
can-tago-mago
TAGO MAGO
Can: Damo Suzuki (vocals); Michael Karoli (guitar); Irmin Schmidt (keyboards); Holger Czukay (bass instrument); Jaki Liebezeit (drums).
Personnel: Holger Czukay (bass guitar).
Recording information: 11/1970-02/1971.
The influence of these seminal '70s Krautrockers on the alternative music of the '80s and '90s has been quiet but enormous. So when Twisted Sister decided to re-record one of their albums in 2004, the most logical choice was Stay Hungry -- and Still Hungry finds a reunited Twisted Sister revisiting that 1984 classic 20 years later. Of course, it's impossible to improve upon perfection, and some fans of Sister's '80s output will wonder if favorites like "We're Not Gonna Take It," "I Wanna Rock," and "Burn in Hell" really needed to be re-recorded. But here's the thing: according to guitarist Jay Jay French, Stay Hungry wasn't perfection -- at least not from a production standpoint. French had problems with the way Tom Werman produced Stay Hungry; Werman and Atlantic Records insisted on a glossier, lighter sort of production, while Dee Snider and his bandmates had envisioned a tougher, harder, heavier sound (and didn't get their way). Stylistically, Still Hungry isn't a big departure from Stay Hungry; Sister plays the same nine songs in pretty much the same fashion and offers them in the same order (adding seven bonus tracks, which range from 2000's previously released "Heroes Are Hard to Find" to some tunes that were written in the '80s but went unfinished). On Still Hungry, bassist Mark Mendoza's production does, in fact, give Stay Hungry's nine songs a dirtier, less glossy sound -- and these 2004 performances are undeniably inspired. Twenty years obviously haven't robbed Snider, French, or Mendoza of their enthusiasm for this material. Nonetheless, the original, Werman-produced 1984 version of Stay Hungry remains Sister's most essential disc; casual listeners should start out with Stay Hungry, not Still Hungry. But for collectors and hardcore fans, Still Hungry paints an enjoyable, interesting picture of the sound that Snider and friends originally had in mind for their most famous album. ~ Alex Henderson

Genre: Rock and Pop

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

Home Free is a Music CDs from Dan Folgelberg

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Zakk Wylde (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Randy Castillo (drums).
Recorded live at the Brixton Academy Theater, England in November 1989. The follow-up would be more specific as to who wrote what. While most bands from Boston suffered from lack of production, Mike Thorne does a decent job on much of the album and excellent work on the title track. Former manager Randall Barbera spoke with this writer prior to the album's recording, when Human League/Pete Shelley producer Martin Rushent was being considered for the task. The question for fans was, like the Cars before them, what was wrong with the hit demo of "Love in a Vacuum," which saturated Boston airwaves prior to the record deal? As good a job as Mike Thorne did on the song "Voices Carry," the world at large has not heard the inspired and innovative recording that was the original "Love in a Vacuum." If memory serves, Will Garrett did the production work, and like certain tracks by the band Private Lightning, the demo to "Love in a Vacuum" was superior to what came out on Epic. As Roy Thomas Baker polished "Just What I Needed" for the Cars, filling it with Queen-style thickness, the new wave edge of the demo, on release on Rhino's Cars Deluxe, will give a good example of the transition these songs go through. The big difference is that the original "Love in a Vacuum" was perfect and needed no changing, and the Mike Thorne version is over-produced, creating a good album track when the true follow-up hit was actually in hand. Epic/Legacy simply has to expand this disc with the original 'Til Tuesday demos. "Don't Watch Me Bleed" has the same kind of mesmerizing bass that makes "Voices Carry" so captivating, while the final track, "Sleep," could be the Human League going deep into the underground. The song would also work well with a girl group hero like Barbara Harris of the Toys, showing the versatility of this unique ensemble. Aimee Mann's major-label debut shows rapid maturity when compared to her Bark Along With the Young Snakes EP, and there's something about this combination of Pesce, Hausman, and the brilliant Robert Holmes that would make a 'Til Tuesday reunion a welcome thing. The haunting lyrics and dark tones of the keys and bass on songs like "I Could Get Used to This" or "No More Crying" separate this recording from the work of similar '80s bands. "Looking Over My Shoulder" has a bubbling intensity which Holmes' guitar adds drama to. Voices Carry may have achieved success because of the MTV video, but there were nine other songs to go along with the hit, and this album and its follow-ups should have had as much commercial success as the Cars, because artistically, they are equal to that band's dynamic debut. ~ Joe Viglione

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 02/01/2008

Balls To Picasso (Uk) is a Music CDs from Bruce Dickinson

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 02/26/2008

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/bruce-dickinson-balls-to-picasso-uk_PiTDt_a668110b-98e4-47f6-a6b4-52f799367050.jpg?v=1759341080
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/collections/Pink_and_White_Grunge_Simple_New_Single_Release_Instagram_Post_3e8b3fe8-fdfd-46de-af16-cd04f91f2ebb.png?v=1782710233
