They retain enough of their trademark quirkiness to keep longtime fans from feeling alienated, but they simultaneously put popwise songcraft to the fore. The dance-rock of "Dashboard" sounds like it could be a Killers outtake, and several tracks find the band engaging in the kind of post-Pavement mid-fi style that first endeared them to the slacker masses.
Isaac Brock sounds properly unhinged on "Florida," "Invisible," and "Steam Engenius," as the band pushes into overdrive, but there's also a brace of low-key, acoustic-based tunes that provide a perfect contrast. The Mouse is bolstered by some high-powered guests as well: Smiths guitar legend Johnny Marr adds a bit of six-string support, and Shins singer James Mercer contributes some backing vocals. Nevertheless, the fraying-but-fierce group dynamic that's always been at the heart of the MM sound prevails throughout.

Genre: Rock

RSD Date: DDD

Format: Vinyl

Released: 03/20/2007

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/modest-mouse-we-were-dead-before-the-ship-even-sank-180-gram-vinyl-2-lps_LSUrV.jpg?v=1746986971
elton-john-1s-rocket-man-cd
#1'S ROCKET MAN CD
Personnel: George Michael, Kiki Dee.
Audio Mixer: Chris E. OK. Fair enough. But if this is back to the raw blues for Simmonds and company on his millionth album, then why does it sound so polished? Steel's sound is very clean, and its approach to songs is, too -- the Lowell Fulsom tune "Monday Morning Blues" that opens the set is all but unrecognizable, having had all of its tough R&B and soul taken away to create a guitar wanker's trio approach. There's plenty of wah-wah, speaking of no artifice. Savoy's rumbling slide guitar craziness of old is back on Simmonds' boogie "Long as I've Got You," with its stinging slide guitar and plenty of amplifier distortion. The guitarist, who also functions -- unfortunately -- as the band's vocalist (what one wouldn't give for a Chris Youlden or Lonesome Dave Peverett up front instead of this monotone monotony), wrote or co-wrote six of the ten cuts here. "You Don't Do Thing for Me" is more of a rock tune ? la Rod Stewart and Ronnie Lane than a Savoy boogie. It's a great cut, though. The reading of Pee Wee Crayton's "Daybreak" is musically commendable for the soft-handed touch Simmonds took with the verse -- though the guitar screams elsewhere -- but the vocal is so drenched in drudgery that it feels more like the tune should be called "Hungover Daybreak." Ultimately, if you are a fan of Savoy Brown, and this means a die-hard fan since there have been so many changes with the band, this just may be the return to form you were looking for -- but Jack the Toad, Hellbound Train, or Getting to the Point this ain't. Everybody else will continue to celebrate Simmonds' ability with a guitar while longing for a real vocalist to recharge this blues-rock dinosaur. ~ Thom Jurek

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 03/06/2007

TracksCredits
1 Paris
2 Goin Down
3 In the Middle
4 Young Girls
5 Hit and Run
6 Night Rider
7 GTR Solo
8 Live to Rock
9 Breakin the Chains
10 Liar

Genre: Hard Rock

Format: CD

Released: 03/13/2007

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/dokken-from-conception-live-1981-manufactured-on-demand_GG3CB_493b3ad6-049d-4560-8ad2-375018cf8c33.jpg?v=1759226323
jennifer-lopez-como-ama-una-mujer
COMO AMA UNA MUJER
Personnel: Jos? Issued in '07, COMO AMA UNA MUJER not only marks a period of renewed activity for J. Lo (see also the films EL CANANTE, co-starring Anthony, and BORDERTOWN), it stands out as her first full Spanish-language album. This return to her Latin roots suits Lopez well, as she warmly embraces her Puerto Rican heritage without abandoning her keen pop sensibility. With top-notch production by Anthony, lauded Colombian musician Julio Reyes Copello, and others, MUJER fully showcases J. Lo's range, as string-laden ballads ("Me Haces Falta," "Tu") are balanced out by energetic dance tracks, most notably the dramatic lead single "Que Hiciste." Easily one of Lopez's most impressive and accomplished records, COMO AMA UNA MUJER finds the singer entering a new phase with creativity and confidence.

Format: CD

Released: 03/27/2007

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/jennifer-lopez-como-ama-una-mujer_o4QmG.jpg?v=1758930765
warren-zevon-stand-in-the-fire
STAND IN THE FIRE
In an era of wishy-washy singer-songwriters, Zevon immediately stood out as a wild card, a singer unafraid of the heat in kitchen. In the 1980s he updated his sound to incorporate an almost new-wave sensibility on his solo albums, as well as turning the clock all the way back to the '50s with jump-blues band the Honeydrippers--hardly the stuff of "Kashmir."
While there are some echoes of Zep on MIGHTY REARRANGER (Bonhamesque whomping drums, Middle Eastern influences, transmogrified blues riffs), Plant isn't resting on his laurels here. The synth-filled "Tin Pan Valley" bears more of a relation to trip-hop than to blues-rock; "Brother Ray" is a quirky, lo-fi piano boogie; and for much of the album Plant veers toward the lower, more intimate end of his vocal range, largely eschewing the high-pitched wail that made him a superstar in bygone stadium-rock days. Plant is joined here by the musicians who helped make his covers album DREAMLAND such a worthy project, and it sounds like they managed to gel into a full-fledged band, giving their leader a solid framework to work his often-hypnotic magic.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 03/20/2007

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/robert-plant-mighty-rearranger_IcgZI.jpg?v=1759186062
prince-jammy-prince-jammy-destroys-the-invaders
PRINCE JAMMY DESTROYS THE INVADERS

PRINCE JAMMY DESTROYS THE INVADERS is a Records & LPs from PRINCE JAMMY

Format: Vinyl

Released: 03/27/2007

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/PRINCE-JAMMY-PRINCE-JAMMY-DESTROYS-THE-INVADERS_oeABj.jpg?v=1758805623
elton-john-1s-rocket-man-cvd
#1'S ROCKET MAN CVD
Audio Mixer: Chris E. He's had plenty of collections, including a good single-disc European set that circulated in the late '90s, but Rocket Man is the first to really offer a solid career-spanning overview as a single-disc set. Of course, even though this pulls number ones from various charts in the U.S. and U.K. there are big hits missing -- whether it's classics like "Honky Cat," which never reached the pole position in the U.S., or latter-day number ones like "I Don't Want to Go on You Like That," which did top the adult contemporary chart -- but it's hard to argue with what's here (with the possible exception of "Sacrifice," which does represent his late-'80s/early-'90s adult contemporary work but isn't one of his best hits). All the big songs -- "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "Bennie and the Jets," "Daniel," "Crocodile Rock," "Philadelphia Freedom," "Can't You Feel the Love Tonight," "Your Song," "Candle in the Wind" -- are here, which will satisfy the casual fan for whom this is designed. Anybody who laments the absence of "Levon," "Someone Saved My Life Tonight," "Mama Can't Buy You Love," "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues," or "I'm Still Standing" should turn to another compilation: this is not the set for them. Her formidable songwriting genius (she penned many of the most enduring Fleetwood Mac songs), her post-flower child mix of Mists of Avalon and Hollywood decadence, and her uniquely husky vibrato made her one of the planet's biggest rock stars from the mid 1970s through the mid '80s. Both with Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist, she practically lived at the top of the charts for a decade.
CRYSTAL VISIONS: THE VERY BEST OF STEVIE NICKS attempts to be the one and only Nicks compilation, but buyer beware: While the tracklist includes Fleetwood classics such as "Dreams," "Rhiannon," and "Landslide" paired with her own stand-out solo hits, these are not the original Mac versions, but rather rerecordings and live reimaginings. While these takes pale next to the originals, they are still fine readings of undeniably great songs. CRYSTAL VISIONS, thankfully, does not mess around with the solo material, and all of Nicks's chart-toppers are here in their original forms: "Edge of Seventeen," "Stand Back," "If Anyone Falls In Love," "Leather and Lace," and "Stop Dragging My Heart Around."
The collection also highlights some heretofore unheard chestnuts like the killer "Sorcerer" and a ripping live version of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll," which show that despite the gypsy robes and candlesticks, Nicks could rock with the best of them.

Genre: Pop

Format: CD

Released: 03/27/2007

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/stevie-nicks-crystal-visions-very-best-of-stevie-nicks_L9HSN.jpg?v=1759239415
barrington-levy-englishman
ENGLISHMAN

ENGLISHMAN is a Records & LPs from BARRINGTON LEVY

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP

Genre: World

Format: Vinyl

Internal ID: JITFE

Released: 03/27/2007

Hiromi: David Fiuczynski (fretless guitar); Tony Grey (bass instrument); Hiromi Uehara, Martin Valihora.
Personnel: David Fiuczynski (guitar); Hiromi Uehara (piano, keyboards); Martin Valihora (drums).
Audio Mixer: Michael Bishop .
Recording information: Blackbird Studios, Studio D. Nashville, TN (10/22/2006-10/26/2006).
Photographer: Frank Capri.
Hiromi Uehara's version of jazz is unique without being willfully strange -- clearly deeply rooted in the straight-ahead jazz verities, she nevertheless writes with a distinctly postmodern sensibility, gleefully juxtaposing wildly disparate musical elements and infusing everything with a joyful energy. In fact, joyful energy is probably the most significant hallmark of her music; on her latest album, even her attempt at a ballad eventually winds up in swinging uptempo territory, and just about everything else either rushes headlong or rocks out strongly in midtempo. This is actually something of a concept album centered on the idea of time, the control of time, and the effects of time on humans. It opens with the frantic but lovely "Time Difference," on which guest guitarist David "Fuze" Fiuczynski is given ample room to rock out, and then lapses into the slower, funkier, but no less energetic "Time Out" (an Uehara original, not the Dave Brubeck standard). "Time Travel" starts out strong but runs out of gas about halfway through its eight and a half minute length, but "Real Clock vs. Body Clock = Jet Lag" is a real hoot -- a surf-rock theme that alternates with a barrelhouse barroom piano theme and then becomes an exercise in advanced guitar and synthesizer tonal insanity. One of the most interesting things about this album is the way that Fiuczynski's tonal experimentation draws out a similar adventurousness in Uehara, to the extent that it's sometimes hard to tell which of them is playing a solo. Several tracks on this album are several minutes too long, but overall it's a real treat. King's broad interests range from a recounting of Irish slaves being sent to Barbados by English leader Oliver Cromwell ("Tobacco Island") and music's role in keeping Celtic tradition alive throughout historical turmoil ("The Wanderlust") to outrage at Bush's warmongering in the name of God ("Screaming at the Wailing Wall"). But instead of dour re-creations of music that even Uncle Tupelo would have rejected, Ghost is something that lives up to its name -- a strange, murky presence that sometimes is not entirely there, but in the best, most suggestive way. Cooper's singing is understated but sweetly calming, a gentle glaze that recalls the not-quite-shoegaze of many early-'90s U.S. acts that rejected grunge and lo-fi for another approach. Meanwhile, the music is equally cool but hardly cold, a carefully detailed combination of instrumentation that lightly references everything from late-'60s Beach Boys to late-'90s Mogwai in its cinematic scope -- banjos sit well against building drums, strings suddenly appear to add piercing emphasis, and there's a definite hint here and there of Dave Fridmann's full-on widescreen production style on songs like "Glory." Yet even more strikingly, there's a real joy that suffuses much of the record, as can be heard on the chorus of "Welcome Home." After so much post-Polyphonic Spree "uplifting" chorale hash infesting NPR-ized rock & roll, the gentle but still exultant beauty here is something special, a blend of vocals, banjo, handclaps and piano that sounds all the better for being a carefully arranged collage. The album's downside is a certain sameness in sound that gets the better of it toward the end -- some songs like "Along the Road" would almost work better separately than in context as a result -- but Ghost is a promising start for Cooper's latest incarnation. ~ Ned Raggett

Genre: Rock

Format: Vinyl

Released: 03/20/2007

Drunken Lullabies is a Records & LPs from Flogging Molly

Handling Note: **Please allow an additional 72 hours for this item's shipment.**

Format Detail: LP

Genre: Pop

Format: Vinyl

Internal ID: JITRE

Released: 03/06/2007

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/flogging-molly-drunken-lullabies_JJRtN.jpg?v=1747126109
chk-chk-chk-myth-takes-cd
!!!
