Cole had spent some time bringing the whole Drake, Wale, and Big Sean style to a more street level. It's worth mentioning because Cole World: The Sideline Story has little of that debut desire to cross over, and while the multi-talented Cole is a skilled, interesting beat-maker in his own right, a superstar production would have certainly made this album more approachable. Instead, No I.D. -- the biggest behind-the-boards name here -- turns in a sluggy, druggy construction for "Never Told," Cole's deep, rich study of father/son confidence. Cole handles most of the rest on his own, turning in B+ stabs at dubstep ("Mr. Nice Watch" with guest and label boss Jay-Z), indie-hop ("Cole World" or "flossin' with a laptop"), and his own humbler version of the Roc-A-Fella sound (the great single "Lights Please"). Add an "Intro" and then a part III -- the first two parts to be found on earlier mixtapes -- and you're practically telling the aboveground crowd they're stale from the start, but the tradeoff is a talent that has matured in the underground and is free of any forced outside influence. Cole's fantastic style shoots off bold punch lines one minute ("I blow brains, Cobain-style") and then goes deep the next, with equal skill and all while stringing together eye-level, real-life stories that have that classic flow. The reservation count is high and the flaw count is zero, and in this case, that's the proper formula for a rich hip-hop album. Take a couple listens, let it sink in, and then discover that Cole World is one hell of a debut. ~ David Jeffries

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 02/24/2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/J-Cole-COLE-WORLD-THE-SIDELINE-STORY_8lAai.jpg?v=1759152090
muni-long-public-displays-of-affection-lp
Public Displays Of Affection [LP]
TracksCredits
1 Pain
2 Another
3 Baby Boo with Saweetie
4 Crack
5 Cartier

Genre: R&B

Format: Vinyl

Released: 10/14/2022

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Muni-Long-Public-Displays-Of-Affection-LP_1LMSa.jpg?v=1754514695
beyonce-renaissance-explicit-content-180-gram-vinyl-booklet-poster-deluxe-edition-2-lps
Renaissance [Explicit Content] (180 Gram Vinyl, Booklet, Poster, Deluxe Edition) (2 Lp's)

TracksCredits - Disc 1 - 1 I'm That Girl 2 Cozy 3 Alien Superstar - Disc 2 - 1 Cuff It 2 Energy 3 Break My Soul 4 Chruch Girl - Disc 3 - 1 Plastic Off the Sofa 2 Virgo's Groove 3 Move 4 Heated - Disc 4 - 1 Thique 2 All Up in Your Mind 3 America Has a Problem 4 Pure/Honey 5 Summer Renaissance

Genre: R&B

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2022

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Beyonc-Renaissance-Explicit-Content-180-Gram-Vinyl-Booklet-Poster-Deluxe-Edition-2-Lps_KDb2M.jpg?v=1750091376
jack-harlow-come-home-the-kids-miss-you-milky-clear-vinyl
Come Home The Kids Miss You (Milky Clear Vinyl)

Come Home The Kids Miss You (Milky Clear Vinyl) is a Records & LPs from Jack Harlow

Genre: R&B

Format: Vinyl

Released: 09/16/2022

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Jack-Harlow-Come-Home-The-Kids-Miss-You-Milky-Clear-Vinyl_ZiYvC.jpg?v=1740733978
erykah-badu-worldwide-undergroun
WORLDWIDE UNDERGROUN

Personnel: Erykah Badu, Stic Man (vocals); Queen Latifah, Angie Stone, Bahamadiah (rap vocals); Lenny Kravitz (electric guitar); Dwayne Kerr (flute); Roy Hargrove (trumpet, background vocals); James Poyser (keyboards, programming); R.C. WORLD WIDE UNDERGROUND was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Back In The Day" was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. "Danger" was nominated for Best Urban/Alternative Performance and for Best R&B Song. Despite being classified as an EP, the near 50-minute length of WORLD WIDE UNDERGROUND makes it closer to being Erykah Badu's fourth full-length outing. Inspired by the Frustrated Artist Tour that found this Texan crisscrossing the world in 2002, Badu uses a very groove-oriented and loosely defined approach towards these songs, thanks to the collaborative skills of her fellow members in the Freakquency team--James Poyser, Rashad "Ringo" Smith, and RC Williams. The results range from the light and sensual flow of "Back in the Day," (featuring some crisp guitar licks by Lenny Kravitz) to "Bump It" with its mix of sprinkled in hip-hop beats, lightly layered synths, and a sweet mix of harmonies by Zap Mama and Karon Wheeler. Along the way, Badu must have been digging in the crates for inspiration, because she includes a hypnotic take on Donald Byrd's 1975 recording "Think Twice" (featuring tasty playing by trumpeter Roy Hargrove). Badu also serves up a remix of the Grammy-winning "Love of My Life Worldwide," built on the foundation of Sequence's 1979 hit "Funk You Up," which features cameos by Queen Latifah, Bahamadia, Badu alter-ego MC Apples, and Angie Stone (the original Angie B of Sequence).

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 9/16/2003

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Erykah-Badu-WORLDWIDE-UNDERGROUN_0Sluj_5b437db1-8912-4f3e-8529-73549ff57439.jpg?v=1759378967
otis-redding-live-at-the-whiskey-a-go-go-180-gram-vinyl-2-lps
Live At The Whiskey A Go Go (180 Gram Vinyl) (2 Lp's)

TracksCredits - Disc 1 - 1 Introduction 2 I Can't Turn You Loose 3 Pain in My Heart 4 Security 5 Just One More Day 6 Any Ole Way - Disc 2 - 1 I've Been Loving You Too Long 2 I'm Depending on You 3 Mr. Pitiful 4 Good to Me 5 Respect - Disc 3 - 1 Chained and Bound 2 Ole Man Trouble 3 Destiny 4 These Arms of Mine - Disc 4 - 1 A Hard Day's Night 2 Papa's Got a Brand New Bag 3 (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction 4 Outro

Genre: R&B

Format: Vinyl

Released: 03/24/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Otis-Redding--Live-At-The-Whiskey-A-Go-Go-180-Gram-Vinyl-2-Lps_nTGtH.jpg?v=1742428289
various-artists-eccentric-deep-soul-yellow-purple-splatter-colored-vinyl
Eccentric Deep Soul (Yellow & Purple Splatter Colored Vinyl)

Tracks 1 All Along I've Loved You - Tony Ashley & Leaving the safety and familiarity of Tamla/Motown has seen many artists take a flight to obscurity. Gaye turned it on its head and made his most successful album for over ten years. The pivotal track is "Sexual Healing," an idea given to him by his biographer David Ritz and co-written with Odell Brown. This track alone is worth the price of the album (even though it was a single). It oozes greatness with every second and was the last great Marvin Gaye song. Indeed, it's often been said that Aretha could take 'happy birthday' and turn it into a veritable opus and while those who know her will testify to her culinary skills in the kitchen, it is her mastery as a musical chef that is evident on each and every one of those forty-plus albums, many of which have achieved gold and platinum status.

Genre: R&B

Released: 07/17/2021

Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/products/Aretha-Franklin-Oh-Me-Oh-My-Aretha-Live-In-Philly-1972-2-Lps_xWPMJ.jpg?v=1737720994
aretha-franklin-yeah-limited-180-gram-purple-colored-vinyl-import
- Yeah!!! Jeanette Washington was still on board, but this time, she joined forces with Shirley Hayden and Janice Evans instead of Debbie Wright and Mallia Franklin. However, Invasion of the Booty Snatchers (whose title is based on the 1950s sci-fi/horror movie Invasion of the Body Snatchers) isn't a radical departure from Parlet's first album, Pleasure Principle. Clinton (who produced this 1979 LP with Ron Dunbar) still goes for variety, and Parlet's sophomore album is as unpredictable as their first. While goofy numbers like "No Rump to Bump" and "Huff-N-Puff" are very Parliament-sounding, "Ridin' High" (a minor hit) and the glossy "Booty Snatchers" have more of a disco influence -- "Ridin' High," in fact, almost sounds like a marriage of P-Funk and Chic. Meanwhile, the pleasing "Don't Ever Stop (Lovin' Me, Needin' Me)" is a conventional Northern soul ballad -- conventional by Clinton's standards, that is. As strong as Invasion of the Booty Snatchers is, the LP wasn't a huge multi-platinum seller; many of the P-Funk addicts who bought Parliament and Funkadelic's albums religiously didn't spend a lot of dollars on Parlet. Nonetheless, Invasion of the Booty Snatchers is arguably the group's finest and most impressive release. ~ Alex Henderson

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 01/01/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Parlet-Invasion-of-the-Booty-Snatchers_4vBzB_40491585-3e9e-4ffb-ad69-fb45b6a4f696.jpg?v=1759207114
the-isley-brothers-its-your-thing
It's Your Thing

It's Your Thing is a Music CDs from The Isley Brothers

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 12/5/2018

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Isley-Brothers-Its-Your-Thing_2bzTx_d951b0cf-2ce3-47eb-b255-cf31d6d03956.jpg?v=1759403465
john-legend-get-lifted
GET LIFTED
Six years after cutting his musical teeth as a teen, tickling the ivories on the classic Lauryn Hill single "Everything Is Everything," John Stephens popped up everywhere in 2004, going by the bold name of John Legend. His ubiquity was unsurprising, since he was taken under the wing of Kanye West, the year's breakout success, who tabbed Legend "the future of hip-hop." It's an interesting label for a man whose elegant voice and schooled songwriting conjures up Bill Withers and Al Green, but sometimes the future intersects with the past in a manner transcending revival.
Legend drops his debut, GET LIFTED, into the center of the neo-soul universe, and it's a charming, earnest record. Sometimes he dives into a contemporary slow jam, as on "Let's Get Lifted;" other times he finds a groove the Delfonics would be proud of, as on the West-driven "Number One." On the gently gorgeous "Ordinary People, " however, it's just the man and his piano. Whether he's truly the future direction of any genre or not, Legend is an artist to watch, and GET LIFTED offers the first major taste of his talent.

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 12/28/2004

Recording information: Audiovision Studios, Miami, FL; Duck Studios, MD; Right Track Studios, New York, NY; Soho Studios, New York, NY; The Cutting Room, New York, NY; The Record Plant, CA.
Photographer: Mo Daoud.
Hip-hop fans can always count on De La Soul; the Long Island trio never released a truly weak record, after exploding out of the box with their groundbreaking 1989 debut, 3 FEET HIGH AND RISING. Both mentally engaging and musically inventive, De La has a track record that few acts can match. With 2004's THE GRIND DATE, Posdnuos, Dave (formerly Trugoy), and DJ Maseo keep that streak intact.
THE GRIND DATE marks De La's departure from the Tommy Boy imprint on which they began, and, as chronicled by the title track, the break was anything but amicable. However, as they state there, they aren't bitter, and, unlike some artists, none of their animosity bleeds onto the rest of the record. As with its predecessors, THE GRIND DATE glides with ease from mood to mood, from defiance ("Verbal Clap") to reflection ("It's Like That") to social observations ("He Comes"). As usual, Pos and Dave's minds are spinning at an impressive clip. (How many rappers would name-check Nas and Carly Simon in the same breath?) Reid and Babyface gave Donell Jones the go-ahead to craft a solo debut. The resulting album, My Heart, introduced Jones to the masses with the help of "Knocks Me off My Feet," his lovely cover of a classic Stevie Wonder ballad. Not only does Jones write the songs and sing them on his debut album; he also produces the album and programs both the drums and keyboards. Thus, comparisons to Wonder are somewhat inevitable, especially because Jones sings with a similarly soothing tone of voice. His later albums show him growing as an artist, but here you see Jones first blossoming. Even with the realization that it is metaphorical, the song startles with its hesitant gasps, spinning cylinders, and verses that are glacially paced, where a cold piano line and the slight inflections in Rihanna's voice are front and center. And then there's an audible shudder followed by a discharged bullet -- the abrupt end to one of Rated R's most restrained moments. It's not the only instance where Rihanna's rise in fame, combined with being the victim in the decade's highest-profile felonious assault, added up to a perfect-storm scenario for a creative overhaul. Rated R is more like Good Girl Gone Evil, or Abused Girl Full of Vengeful Rage, not Good Girl Gone Bad, where the only casualties were some dishes. The closest the set gets to upbeat pop is "Rude Boy," and by any standard it is stern; needless to say, there is quite a difference between "Can you get it up?" and "You can stand under my umbrella." Much of this daring album is absolutely over the top, bleak and sleek both lyrically and sonically, but it's compelling, filled with as many memorably belligerent lines -- two of which, "I pitch with a grenade/Swing away if ya feeling brave" and "I'm such a fuckin' lady," set the tone early on -- as a rap album made ripe for dissection. "G4L," over a low-slung and sleek production, is the most fantastical of all, in which Rihanna leads a band of homicidal women, opening with "I lick the gun when I'm done 'cause I know that revenge is sweet" and "Any mothaf*cka wanna disrespect/Playin' with fire finna get you wet." The breakup song, "Fire Bomb," even though it is also metaphorical, is a close second in terms of lyrical extremity: "I just wanna set you on fire so I won't have to burn alone." Some of the breathers -- the songs that are less intense -- hold the album back since Rihanna sounds detached from them. The one exception is the wistful, bittersweet "Photographs," a rare instance of the singer dropping her guard, but it really sticks out since it is surrounded by material that has her taking the variably authentic roles of abused lover, dominatrix, and murderer. Whether the album seems ridiculous or spectacular (or both), Rihanna's complete immersion in the majority of the songs cannot be disputed. This release contains more examples of his supple, fluid vocals, expert delivery, and sophisticated yet soulful style. Indeed, Vandross hasn't made many better overall albums from a strict singing standpoint; his voice is full and impressive in every register, and there's no sign of strain when he reaches to the top of an arrangement or extends notes and phrases. Perhaps the only sign of creative wear and tear is the album's structure; there's no real blockbuster single, and the final medley, which blends classics from the Spinners and Bee Gees, sounds thrown together, but these production and arranging elements do not diminish his vocal prowess. ~ Ron Wynn

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 1/1/1980

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Luther-Vandross-Never-Let-Me-Go_l8WBe_2594add7-ae22-4f56-8589-7edb9c3b7875.jpg?v=1759241913
ghostface-killah-more-fish-explicit
MORE FISH (EXPLICIT)
Personnel: Mister Maygreen, Billie Cottrell, Miss Info, Tracy Morgan, Tristan Wilds, Trife da God (vocals); Larry Cottrell (guitar); Carolyn Isaacs "Momdukes" (keyboards); Eric Isaacs "E Dub", Big D (drums).
Audio Mixers: Jason Goldstein; Lucas McClelan; DJ Hi-Tek.
Recording information: Manhattan Beach Studios, New York, NY; Reddline Studios, Staten Island, NY; TekLab Studios, Cincinnati, OH.
Photographers: Tai Linzie; F. Annotator Kalamu Ya Salaam argues that "Disco Lady" is not a disco song, and backs this up by noting that the track actually was played by members of Parliament-Funkadelic. True enough, though that only applies to Taylor's debut Columbia album, Eargasm. Elsewhere, Taylor did drift, from Muscle Shoals tracks that updated his Stax Memphis sound to tracks that sounded like Marvin Gaye. The early years, 1976 and 1977, were more accomplished than the later ones, and that's where compilation producer Leo Sacks focuses, with 12 of the 16 tracks coming from then. In so doing, he ignores R&B chart singles like "Keep on Dancing" and "Ever Ready," but he satisfies the "best-of" title. ~ William Ruhlmann

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 1/1/1980

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Johnnie-Taylor-Rated-X-Traordinaire-Best-Of_OPn0M_e81dabad-1a3f-4ce0-a6e9-0df92c6ad06b.jpg?v=1759171357
ray-charles-modern-sounds-in-country-and-western-music-import
Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music [Import]

Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music [Import] is a Music CDs from Ray Charles

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 11/17/2014

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Ray-Charles-Modern-Sounds-in-Country-and-Western-Music-Import_opym6.jpg?v=1759335548
daley-days-nights
DAYS & NIGHTS
Photographer: Paul Scala.
A striking Hi Records-style ballad, a lead vocal on Gorillaz' Top 40 U.K. single "Doncamatic," a long-list nomination for BBC's Sound of 2011 poll, and a variety of prelude releases led to Daley's proper debut album. A few years in the making, Days & Nights smartly includes "Alone Together," a Grammy-worthy 2012 duet with Marsha Ambrosius that didn't light up mainstream urban stations but reached number five on Billboard's Adult R&B Songs chart. That Canei Finch-produced song, as well as the preceding material, implied that this soul-inspired red-headed native of Manchester, England -- who has no other apparent likeness to Simply Red's Mick Hucknall -- could go down any number of stylistic paths. Days & Nights does just that. It courses through many moods and modes, yet it's impressively unified. On opener "Time Travel," a typically sleek and shadowy production from Illangelo, Daley instantly lures with his delicate touch and casual delivery that nonetheless makes a direct and deep emotional connection. He then slips into "Look Up," where Pharrell Williams whips up some elegant neo-Philly soul that allows him to display a falsetto that isn't just impressive but also affecting. Daley remains in service to the song, neither winks nor pulls it out as an act of trickery. With its beaming melodies and impeccably layered, all-Daley background vocals, "Pass It On," another Finch production, could fool listeners as an update of a joyous 1985 R&B single. A trio of songs made with reluctant Brit-pop guitar god turned accomplished producer Bernard Butler (Duffy, Findlay Brown, James Morrison) adds more dimensions. The cathartic "Broken" unfolds into a hurtling, grand sound that Daley masterfully navigates, while "She Fades" is a pulsing, strings-cloaked ballad that aches. The last of the three, the title track, ends the album in graceful, heartbroken, dreamily optimistic fashion with subtle nods to early hip-hop and electro. Brilliantly put together, this must be one of 2014's best debuts. ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 2/11/2014

Audio Mixer: Ken "Duro" Ifill.
Recording information: Chung King Studio, New York, NY; CMR Studios South, Miami, FL; Hir Factory Citeria, Miami, FL; Orange Factory Studios, New York, NY.
Borrowing the best bits of his 2008 U.K. release My Own Way while adding a handful of new tracks, All or Nothing is R&B singer Jay Sean's big play for American success. Big difference here is that while Rocky fits in perfectly with kinetic and weird folks like Danny Brown, Ferg comes off as a tough, cold Bun B or even Notorious B.I.G.-type character, making music that should only be listened to once night falls and cooking up stern, infectious thug anthems like the posse cut "Work." With Jim Jonsin on production and Waka Flocka Flame firing like a machine gun dropped on the floor, Ferg's the certain, mighty anchor of highlight "Murda Something." When it comes to that Biggie sense of nostalgia, the great "Shabba" honors the Dons of yesterday with some clues as to whose posters hung on the young Ferg's wall ("Eight gold rings, like I'm Shabba, Shabba Ranks/Four gold chains like I'm Shabba, Shabba Ranks"). The mighty begins to bleed into the mystical once Bone Thugs-N-Harmony join for the choice track "Lord," and yes, that's the brilliant hire of the old-school team Onyx for "Fuck Out My Face" which is perfectly staffed with the additions of B Real and Aston Matthews. These easily connectable numbers are surrounded by more challenging tracks as "4:02" suggests a porno soundtrack that's been screwed and chopped by the Dark Lord himself, while "Make a Scene" is a triumphant stab at the Southern funk-rap of Outkast that drops a tab on its tongue about midpoint before bleeding away like an over shaken Polaroid picture. Juggling Masonic symbols, Golden Age hip-hop cassettes, and loaded glocks with ease, the rapper is an excellent tour guide through this warped landscape of thrills and chills, and even if Rocky remains the A$AP Mob's most obvious and outgoing choice, there's an argument to be made that the more interesting one is Ferg, a Trap Lord if there ever was one. ~ David Jeffries

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 08/20/2013

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Aap-Ferg-TRAP-LORD-EXPLICIT-VERSION_UKVse_82653d9b-106b-473e-b9fa-78c51838147e.jpg?v=1759200899
the-weeknd-dawn-fm-indie-exclusive-cassette-w-alternate-cover-art-explicit-content
Dawn FM (Indie Exclusive Cassette W/ Alternate Cover Art) [Explicit Content]

Dawn FM (Indie Exclusive Cassette W/ Alternate Cover Art) [Explicit Content] is a Music Cassette Tapes from The Weeknd

Genre: R&B

Format: Cassette

Released: 04/29/2022

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/The-Weeknd-Dawn-FM-Indie-Exclusive-Cassette-W-Alternate-Cover-Art-Explicit-Content_RGB7I.jpg?v=1759117449
james-brown-playlist-plus
PLAYLIST PLUS
Photographers: Kwame Brathwaite; Chuck Stewart.
Like other volumes in Universal's Playlist Plus series, this compilation is spread across three discs and is recommendable for anyone who doesn't want to stop with a well-chosen single- or double-disc James Brown anthology, which could only possibly cover a fraction of the Soul Brother Number One's most significant material. A small fraction of Michels' activity included continued work with Menahan Street Band and the Expressions, whole-album productions for Aloe Blacc and Chicano Batman, and session gigs with Dr. John and Lana Del Rey. Additionally, he co-founded a second label, Big Crown (the first was Truth & Soul), home to Lady Wray's Queen Alone (another one of his productions), and this sequel to EMA's 2009 LP, inevitably titled Return to the 37th Chamber. Including all four sides of singles released in 2016 and early 2017, it goes a little deeper and farther out than Enter the 37th Chamber. Michels, Nick Movshon, and Thomas Brenneck perform the majority of the music, supported with a familiar extended cast of associates on one or two cuts each, while Wray, Lee Fields, and the Shacks' Shannon Wise add occasional cross-generational vocals to the predominantly instrumental set. As with the earlier volume, the inspiration here is the RZA, specifically the rugged yet elegant material that formed the foundation of Wu-Tang Clan's 1993 debut and the first wave of solo albums that followed it, including those from Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, and GZA. The late-'60s/early-'70s soul that RZA sampled -- the Hi and Stax labels were frequent sources -- is still in Michels and company's wheelhouse, and they're as inspired as ever by the soul and reggae session crews of Memphis, Detroit, and Kingston. Even when EMA's efforts don't match the beauty of the source material or the brawn of RZA's beats, the level of commitment and imagination is undeniable. Deepest of all is the hard-hitting "Shaolin Brew," based on the track RZA cooked up for Wu-Tang's mid-'90s malt liquor ad (as seen on television and heard in the background of the intro to Raekwon's "Spot Rusherz," but never released properly). ~ Andy Kellman

Genre: R&B

Format: Cassette

Released: 04/14/2017

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/El-Michels-Affair-Return-to-the-37th-Chamber-_hHlG5.jpg?v=1759353493
chuck-jackson-best-of-20th-century
BEST OF/20TH CENTURY
Personnel includes: Chuck Jackson (vocals), Maxine Brown.
Liner Note Author: David Nathan .
Arrangers: Luther Dixon; Steven Garrick; Stan Green; Horace Ott; Teacho Wiltshire; Burt Bacharach; Bert Keyes; Carole King.
Chuck Jackson is one of the great underrated soul singers of the '60s. His deep and unerringly smooth vocals and the slick uptown sound of his records may give some listeners and critics the impression that he is lacking in soul. Not so. One listen to him soaring through the incredible "Any Day Now (My Wild Beautiful Bird)" or "I Keep Forgettin' (Everytime You're Near)" will certainly dispel any doubts. This collection rounds up nine of his fine recordings for the Wand label cut between 1961 and 1965, including the two aforementioned classics plus the unusually raw "Hand It Over" and an intimate version of "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself." It also adds a duet between Jackson and the equally wonderful and underrated Maxine Brown on Chris Kenner's "Something You Got" and a couple of cuts from later in his career. The very funky take on the Bert Berns-penned groover "Are You Lonely for Me Baby" comes from 1969 and was recorded during Jackson's brief stay at Motown. The other two cuts find Jackson in fine voice but with less than fine material and arrangements surrounding him: "I'm Needing You, Wanting You" is a slightly cheesy bedroom ballad from 1975, and "I Wanna Give You Some Love" is a lightly disco-fied take on a Bob Marley song from 1980. Still, they are a piece of the puzzle that most other Jackson collections ignore, so if you want a disc that covers those eras as well as his classic Wand period, this does just fine. ~ Tim Sendra

Genre: R&B

Format: CD

Released: 5/4/2004

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/files/Chuck-Jackson-BEST-OF20TH-CENTURY_xTdcr_acf06aa7-9a66-411d-98b6-76dd8d715b31.jpg?v=1742361829
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0654/3523/8633/collections/image_6a58bab6-88d6-409b-b355-18e0d07875c5.png?v=1783105425
