They already know their past (straight-ahead post-punk), and A BOY NAMED GOO plots out their present.\nWith a smart-alec, bar-band approach reminiscent of the Replacements, the Goo Goo Dolls rage about being \"Disconnected\"--that \"someone pulled the plug.\" They sound worried on \"Long Way Down,\" realizing that \"I don't think I'll make it on my own.\" \"Burnin' Up\" offers another key to the Goo Goo Dolls' garage sound by adding a smidgeon of Husker Du (the Bob Mould guitar chimes and Grant Hart's melodic vocal sense are properly reproduced). But it's on the acoustic \"Name\" that the Dolls' own context emerges. Accordingly, their early albums were fervid punk-flavored items full of barely controlled sonic mayhem and occasional hints of pop songcraft. By the time of 1995's A BOY NAMED GOO, the band had honed its sound to perfection, trimming off the roughest edges and seriously pumping up the pop sensibilities. Sure enough, it provided the Dolls with their commercial breakthrough five albums into their career.\nIt was the poignant semi-ballad \"Name\" that provided the band with their all-important radio smash, but in fact that tune was a bit of an anomaly. As part of this embrace of the present, the Goo Goo Dolls -- now merely a duo of John Rzeznik and Robby Takac -- unapologetically embrace their middle age, excising any remaining hints of the raucous rock band of yore and splitting their time between power ballads and insistent anthems. Hints of \"Iris\" and its aftermath are heard throughout but Rzeznik and Takac do pay attention to modern music, threading in portions of the gated hip-hop rhythms of Twenty One Pilots on occasion. Elsewhere, they have a tough time shaking remnants of the cavernous rallying calls of Mumford \u0026amp; Sons -- it's an affectation left over from 2013's Magnetic and feels past its sell-by date here -- but that only underscores how the Goo Goo Dolls have turned from energy and songs toward an enveloping mood. For the band's 2002 follow-up GUTTERFLOWER, Rzeznik channeled his feelings into a set of songs steeped in the Goo's mastery of hook-ridden, rock-edged pop. Lines like \"How does it feel when you're out on your own\/And now it's too late to come home\" on the Pearl Jam-flavored \"What A Scene\" and \"I'm torn in pieces\/I'm blind and waiting for you\" on the catchy and whip-smart \"Big Machine\" are self-explanatory. For more emotional turbulence, see the mandolin-soaked delicacy of \"Sympathy\" and the epic \"Truth Is A Whisper\" with its driven tempo and churning guitars.\nBassist Robby Takac claims a third of the songwriting credit on GUTTERFLOWER and proves to be as talented as his Rzeznik at crafting memorable cuts. It's little surprise why there was more of a push for this album, though. If it wasn't as powerfully distinct as Nirvana's Nevermind, Hold Me Up is as much a product of '80s underground punk and indie (and dollops of bands like Cheap Trick) as its more famous counterpart. The Replacements Jr. tag that dogged the Goos in early years still has a connection here, unquestionably. But considering at that point Paul Westerberg was starting down his road toward tasteful irrelevance, Hold Me Up is the perfect stand-in for those who wanted a little more energy with their catchy but emotional rock. If anything, Rzeznik's agreeably ragged and certainly Westerberg-inspired vocals start to really come into their own even more than before, now a great contrast to Takac's amiable brattishness. The latter can have his own impact, though -- check out the opening \"Laughing\" or \"So Outta Line,\" both hyperactive numbers with heart. There's no question Rzeznik steals the show with the album's lead single -- \"There You Are,\" with a brilliant, descending lead guitar figure and a sprawling, sloppy\/tight performance that's pure gold.
