Condition Guide

Shop Pre-Owned Music with Confidence

Buying pre-owned vinyl records, CDs, cassettes, and collectible media shouldn't feel like a gamble. At Vibin' Vinyl, every used item is individually inspected and graded using widely recognized industry standards to help you understand exactly what you're purchasing before it arrives.

Whether you're just starting your collection or searching for a rare pressing, this guide explains the grading terminology we use and what each condition means.

Why Condition Grading Matters

Unlike brand-new products, every pre-owned record or piece of media has its own history. Even two copies of the same album can vary significantly in appearance and playback quality.

Accurate grading helps collectors make informed decisions and sets clear expectations before purchasing. That's why every pre-owned item sold by Vibin' Vinyl is carefully evaluated before it's listed for sale.

While no grading system is completely objective, we strive to provide fair, consistent, and honest assessments so you can shop with confidence.

Understanding Our Grading Scale

Mint (M)

Mint is the highest possible condition grade.

Items in Mint condition are generally factory sealed or appear completely unused with no visible signs of handling or wear.

Because truly Mint pre-owned items are uncommon, this grade is used sparingly.

Near Mint (NM or M-)

Near Mint items are exceptionally well preserved and show little to no evidence of use.

Records should play beautifully with minimal surface noise, while jackets, inserts, and packaging remain clean and well cared for.

For many collectors, Near Mint represents the ideal balance between condition and value.

Very Good Plus (VG+)

Very Good Plus is one of the most desirable and commonly encountered collector grades.

Items may display light cosmetic wear from normal handling, but playback should remain enjoyable with only minor imperfections, if any.

Packaging may show slight shelf wear, light corner wear, or small signs of age while remaining highly presentable.

Very Good (VG)

Very Good items show more noticeable signs of use but remain fully playable and enjoyable.

Records may exhibit visible surface marks and occasional background noise that does not overpower the music.

Jackets and packaging may include moderate shelf wear, ring wear, creases, or other cosmetic imperfections consistent with regular use.

Good (G / G+)

Good and Good Plus items have experienced significant use and will show noticeable cosmetic wear.

Playback imperfections such as surface noise, pops, or crackle may be present, but the media remains playable.

These copies often appeal to collectors looking for affordable listening copies or difficult-to-find releases.

Fair (F) / Poor (P)

Items graded Fair or Poor show substantial wear or damage.

These grades are rarely offered unless the release is especially rare or collectible.

Any significant defects will always be clearly described in the product listing.

What We Grade

Every pre-owned listing considers more than just the media itself.

Media Condition

The condition of the vinyl record, CD, cassette, DVD, Blu-ray, or other media.

We evaluate playback surfaces, visible wear, scratches, scuffs, and overall presentation.

Packaging Condition

Packaging may include:

  • Record jacket
  • CD jewel case or digipak
  • Cassette case
  • Booklets
  • Inserts
  • Lyric sheets
  • Posters
  • OBI strips
  • Inner sleeves
  • Slipcases
  • Box set packaging

Packaging condition is graded separately whenever appropriate so collectors understand exactly what they're purchasing.

Additional Product Notes

Whenever necessary, individual listings may include additional information beyond the overall grade.

Examples include:

  • Original pressing
  • Promotional copy
  • Includes original inserts
  • Missing booklet or insert
  • Corner wear
  • Ring wear
  • Punch hole
  • Cut corner
  • Writing on sleeve
  • Surface marks
  • Tested playback
  • Colored vinyl
  • Limited edition packaging

These notes help provide additional transparency beyond the standard grading scale.

Our Commitment to Accurate Grading

Every pre-owned item sold by Vibin' Vinyl is individually inspected before being listed for sale.

Our goal is not simply to assign a grade, but to provide an honest representation of each item's overall condition so collectors know what to expect before their order arrives.

If an item's condition differs significantly from its description, we'll work with you to make it right in accordance with our Pre-Owned Promise.
