808 State: Andy Barker, Graham Massey, Darren Partington, Martin Price. Additional personnel: Bernard Sumner, Bjork (vocals). Recorded between September and December 1990. One of the leading lights in British dance scene of the early 1990s, 808 State is operating at peak form on EX:EL. Not only does the album feature two of the group's signature tunes--the club anthems "In Yer Face" and "Cubik"--it also presents fine collaborations with Bernard Sumner of New Order (the pulsing "Spanish Heart") and Bjork (most notably the dreamy "Ooops"), who would develop a fruitful relationship with 808's Graham Massey in subsequent years. The 2008 reissue of EX:EL includes a bonus disc loaded with remixes.
