Astor Piazzolla And His Quintet: Asto Piazzola, Pablo Zigler, Fernando Suarez Paz, Horacio Malvichino, Hector Console. Additional personnel: Roberto Goyeneche, Alfredo Zitarrosa, Anibal Troilo (vocals); Nestor Marconi (bandoneon, bass, guitar, violin). Recorded at Ion Studios, Buenos Aires, Argentina. All tracks are in stereo except track 15 which is in mono. Despite battles with repressive governmental heads that eventually forced him into exile, Piazzolla's recordings enjoyed worldwide impact. Sur was among his final releases; he wrote it shortly after returning from exile as a score for a French air film titled Sur, blending short songs with involved orchestral works and even some rock and pop elements ("Dando del Tartamudo," for example). But like almost all his material, the CD's real appeal and beauty was hearing Piazzolla's evocative, lush bandoneon solos and the way they were incorporated into various arrangements and songs. ~ Ron Wynn
