While not a full-fledged Ben Folds solo outing, UNIVERSITY A CAPPELLA! is a labor of love for the renowned alt-pop singer-songwriter, who searched the U.S. for the finest collegiate vocal groups to record his ever-quirky songs. Drawing from both Folds's solo work and his tenure with the Ben Folds Five, A CAPPELLA opens with two ensembles from the performer's native North Carolina, as Greensboro's Spartones take on "Not the Same" with gusto, and Chapel Hill's Loreleis offer up a lilting version of "Jesusland." Folds himself gets in on the act, unveiling thoroughly studio-tweaked a cappella renditions of "Boxing" and "Effington," with the pulsing latter track standing out as one of the album's clear highlights.
