SONGS IN THE ATTIC is a collection of some of Billy Joel's personal favorites, all recorded live. This edition is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as video clips for the songs "Los Angelenos," "Say Goodbye To Hollywood" and "You're My Home." Personnel: Billy Joel (vocals, harmonica, piano, keyboards); David Brown, Russell Javors (guitar); Richie Cannata (flute, winds, saxophone, organ, keyboards); Liberty DeVito (drums, percussion). Recorded live during Billy Joel's 1980 GLASS HOUSES tour. Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). In the summer of 1980, while "It's Still Rock & Roll To Me" was rocketing up the pop charts on its way to becoming his first number one single, Billy Joel was barnstorming small clubs on the East Coast with a set of songs he wrote before he became a superstar. This unusual tour served as the basis of SONGS IN THE ATTIC, a live album consisting entirely of non-hits. The songs range from sweet, previously overlooked ballads like "She's Got a Way" (from the then-out-of-print COLD SPRING HARBOR) and "You're My Home" to early concert staples like "Miami 2017" and "Captain Jack," and make for a pretty good picture of what Joel sounded like before he became a household name. About half the album was recorded in arenas--because, as Joel writes in the liner notes, a song like "Miami 2017" "demands the gothic reverberation of New York's Madison Square Garden"--but it's heart lies in the intimate club performances. "She's Got a Way" even became a modest pop hit.
