Liner Note Author: Daryl Easlea. Word Up! The Ultimate Collection, released in 2013 by Spectrum in the U.K., is similar to other two-disc Cameo compilations such as identical predecessors Anthology (2002) and Gold (2005). Only hardcore fans will have a strong opinion regarding the differences. All the obvious singles, such as "Rigor Mortis," "I Just Want to Be," "She's Strange," "Word Up!," "Candy," and "Back and Forth," are included here. The difference in the selection of less successful singles and album cuts is slight. The "Room 123" version of "She's Strange" is a pleasant surprise -- its lone previous CD appearance was on The 12" Collection and More -- but the absence of "Find My Way" and "Alligator Woman/Secrets of Time" is unfortunate. Regardless, this is a fine overview a great, undervalued funk band. ~ Andy Kellman
