Arrangers: Tim Kelley; Bob Robinson . Dave Hollister's R&B opus CHICAGO '85 presents itself as something of a concept album. The songs are listed as sections of a movie screenplay, each one occurring on a different day over the course of the "film." Whether one chooses to follow the admittedly slim thematic thread between the songs, or simply to enjoy the album as an impressive batch of individual songs, there's no denying Hollister's vocal skills and the effectiveness of the arrangements. While the production and vocal performances nod to hip-hop, Hollister bears a soulfulness that links him to previous generations of R&B singers. One listen to his impassioned testifying at the close of "Take Care of Home," for example, will leave no doubts both to the level of his emotional commitment to the material and his ability to successfully communicate these emotions.
