Album Overview
Dirty Projectors and Björk combine experimental pop, intricate vocal arrangements, and unconventional songwriting on Mount Wittenberg Orca, their collaborative seven-song work originally released digitally in 2010. Conceived after a conversation between Dirty Projectors leader David Longstreth and Björk about the intimate theaters where opera developed in 16th-century Italy, the project was written for an unamplified performance at Housing Works in Manhattan.
Vocals sit at the center of the recording. Björk and Longstreth share lead duties while Dirty Projectors members Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian, and Haley Dekle build layered three-part harmonies around them. Songs including “On and Ever Onward,” “Beautiful Mother,” “Sharing Orb,” and “All We Are” move between experimental pop, choral textures, and the distinctive rhythmic and melodic language of Dirty Projectors.
The studio recordings were made at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn after only a few days of rehearsal, with the musicians recording as quickly and directly as possible and using minimal overdubs. The result preserves the intimate, voice-focused character at the heart of the project.
This 2023 Record Store Day Expanded Edition greatly extends the original seven-track release with the complete 2009 Housing Works performance, early Inverness demos, rehearsal recordings, and other archival material. The 27-track collection is presented across two 140g dark green vinyl records in a limited edition of 1,500 copies on Domino Recording Co.
