Album Overview
Dirty Projectors enter a dramatically different sonic space on their self-titled album, blending experimental pop, electronic production, fractured R&B influences, and the unpredictable songwriting associated with Dave Longstreth. Released in 2017, Dirty Projectors pairs densely layered production with some of the project’s most personal and emotionally direct material.
The nine-track album opens with “Keep Your Name” before moving through the sprawling “Death Spiral” and “Up in Hudson.” Across the record, songs such as “Little Bubble,” “Ascent Through Clouds,” and “Cool Your Heart” combine manipulated vocals, electronic textures, orchestral detail, and unconventional rhythmic structures.
Longstreth leads the album with contributions from artists including Solange Knowles, Tyondai Braxton, Mauro Refosco, and Dawn Richard. The result pushes Dirty Projectors further into digitally constructed production while maintaining the intricate melodies, unusual harmonies, and compositional experimentation that define the project.
This 2017 U.S. Domino edition presents the complete nine-track album across two black vinyl records, with music on Sides A through C and an etched fourth side.
Why You’ll Love It
If you enjoy Dirty Projectors at their most electronic, fragmented, and emotionally exposed, the self-titled album offers one of the most distinctive shifts in their catalog. Songs such as “Up in Hudson,” “Little Bubble,” and “Cool Your Heart” combine ambitious production with deeply personal songwriting, while the double-vinyl presentation gives the album’s expansive arrangements room across three playable sides.
