Album Overview
Dirty Projectors turn toward warm acoustic textures and bossa nova-inspired songwriting on Super João, the third installment in the band’s five-EP series released throughout 2020. Written, produced, and performed by Dave Longstreth, the four-song collection takes inspiration from Brazilian guitarist and singer João Gilberto and his understated approach to rhythm, melody, and harmony.
The EP opens with “Holy Mackerel” before moving through “I Get Carried Away,” “You Create Yourself,” and “Moon, If Ever.” Nylon-string acoustic guitar, intimate vocals, longform melodies, and unusual chord progressions give the release a quieter and more stripped-down character than much of Dirty Projectors’ catalog.
Longstreth recorded the material straight to tape with Kyle Thomas, also known as King Tuff, while collaborating with Kyle Field of Little Wings on lyrics. The resulting recordings emphasize spontaneity and simplicity, drawing from the understated spirit of bossa nova while retaining Dirty Projectors’ distinctive melodic and compositional style.
This 2020 U.S. edition presents all four songs on a 45 RPM 12-inch vinyl EP through Domino Recording Co.
