DJ Kool is a clear inheritor of Washington, D.C.'s go-go music spirit. His debut album is stocked wall-to-wall with live performances of polyrhythmic, percussion-strapped grooves and call-and-response vocals aimed at inciting dance-floor nirvanas. The music is all about rump-shaking; consequently, Kool rules the roost by being an old-fashioned MC, a master of celebratory ceremonies intent on moving the crowd, rather than a preacher or storyteller. Although go-go's popularity has been in decline while hip-hop has risen as the urban music of choice, D.C.-born Kool seems intent on accentuating the similarities between the two genres, and on getting folks interested once more. Go-go, a beat-heavy style of R&B played by large bands feeding on improvisatory grooves, resembles the old-school hip-hop style of a vocalist rapping over beats. Kool has replaced the band with a DJ, but the form remains. And when Kool reprises the hit title song with master MCs Biz Markie and Doug E. Fresh in the house, that connection seems even stronger. This is post-G hip-hop on a rather unique party-rockin' journey.
